Author's note: The puppy is Riot. Andy and Ian are hyper so Caleb referred to them as Chaos. Also, guest, you are absolutely right. There are too many abilities and that is written purposefully. She is going through the Nephilian version of puberty. That is the whole reason that the guys are concerned. She will have a burst of abilities that are not reliable. I have methods to my madness. As for characters, I'm not sure. I probably won't add Adam or Ben. The other one I think I had mentioned in passing. I'll have to watch his episodes again because I'm not that familiar with him.
(Andy)
Andy woke up to puppy kisses all over his face. He giggled and threw his hands up to cover himself. Sitting up, he ran his hands through Riots fur. He couldn't believe that he actually had a puppy. He saw a wet spot on the floor and sighed heavily. He'd need paper towels and cleaner. No problem, he could reach those and he knew which sprays he could use. He cleaned up the puddle and poured some food into a bowl for Riot. That wasn't so bad. The clock on the wall told him that it was too early for everyone to wake up. He was hungry though. He used a step stool to remove the Lucky Charms box from the pantry and grabbed a bowl. He looked in the refrigerator for some milk and saw that the jug was almost empty. He got it out and placed it on the counter while he wrote 'milk' on the list that hung on the fridge door. He poured cereal into his bowl and then added milk. He spilled a little so he wiped it off of the counter. As the oldest brother, with a second baby coming, he had to be responsible. That meant making his own breakfast and cleaning up messes. Caleb was usually up by the time that he got up but he thought he was doing well at being up alone. He stepped back with his bowl full of milk and cereal. He took a step toward the table and tripped over Riot, sending Lucky Charms everywhere.
Riot, thrilled with another source of food, wagged his tail as he lapped at the milk, stepping in it and tracking little paw prints through the kitchen.
Caleb, as a trained hunter, heard the bowl hit the floor and made it to the kitchen before Andy could grab a towel.
Andy looked up at him. "It was an accident."
Caleb grabbed towels and helped Andy contain the mess. "Andy, bud, take a few deep breaths."
Andy had worked himself up into a near panic attack. "Mom said she'd whack me with a wooden spoon if I messed up the floor again."
Caleb blew air through his nose. "She said that because you kept tracking mud in and she had just mopped."
Andy paused. "How do you know that?"
Caleb got another towel, "We talked about it. When you two go to bed we stay up and she tells me things."
Andy wasn't sure what to do with that information. "She told you I stepped on the floors?"
"Yes, I asked how each of you were yesterday. I know about you getting sent to your room for talking back." Caleb said.
Andy snapped his head up. "Uh, you do?"
Caleb chuckled. "She also told me that you were well behaved the rest of the day."
Andy relaxed. He knew not to sass his mom but sometimes he forgot. Knowing that she told his dad about things made him second guess how much he could get away with. "I cleaned up the other messes. I just tripped."
"It is okay. We can get the floor looking like it did yesterday. Accidents do happen." He let Riot out into the backyard to use the restroom. "Here, we will mop this up and throw these in the washer. Just like it never happened."
Andy frowned. "I used all the milk."
Caleb scratched his chin. "How about you and I pick up some breakfast and bring it back."
Andy brightened. "Can Riot come?"
"He can ride in the truck." Caleb said, amused by Andy's excitement.
Andy ran outside to collect Riot and got him back inside the house. He grabbed the collar they bought and attempted to put it on Riot's neck. He was unsuccessful as Riot rolled on his back and then jumped up, swinging his head, thinking that Andy was going to play tug o war with the collar.
Caleb laughed and assisted Andy. Part of the fun of having a puppy was training him. He straightened the collar and smiled at the tag. Andy had insisted that it have his first and last name on the tag so it read 'Riot Fisher'. It felt good to share his last name with his little family and now, the dog. The Fishers were a dying breed. His grandfather and uncles, the two that he had, died before he was born or when he was too young to remember them. Then, his mother passed, followed years later by his father. Caleb was the only Fisher left. Not anymore. His dad would be proud.
(Kate)
Time travel opened a can of worms in Kate's head. She knew that she eventually jumped around to fix or change certain things. She could walk through memories. She had done so with Dean. Could she time travel without changing things? Dean did. Would going through the time stream be better? She formed theories. Maybe she could view memories through an orb and use that to guide her. If she was going to travel and not change things, why would she go back? What if she could go forward? She sighed. She could see her dad again. Dean said he was his real age when he went back. Could she pass for younger? If she went back to right before he died, she may be able to convince him that she hadn't changed. Why would she want to relive that? No, she would want to go back to before things got so bad. When had things been good? She had happy memories but they were few and far between. Maybe she was being cynical. Brian was a good dad. Truthfully, he was like John when Dean and Sam were younger. He tried his best but hunting hardened him. She wondered if Lee would do the same thing to Krissy. Was there any right way to raise a kid while also fighting the world's monsters?
She was on autopilot the first part of the day. She couldn't think and interact at the same time.
Dean didn't know if she was off because of sending him back in time or what had started the dead-eyed spiral back into herself. "Earth to Kate."
Kate blinked. "Huh?"
"Where are you right now?" Dean asked.
Kate looked around. "Uh, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Pretty sure Bobby's house."
Dean snorted. "Brat. I'm asking where your head is at."
"Oh, I was just thinking. You know how that goes." Kate said.
"Come on, spill." Dean said and motioned to the couch for her to sit down.
"Well, first I was thinking bout time travel. Can I just send people places or can I go myself? I know Taylor and I can use the time stream but what about those trips that do not change anything? I was thinking about going back one day to see my dad one more time but now I am older than the last time he saw me so he would be alarmed unless I explained what happened but then he would know I could time travel and that would change history. Well, not if he was cool about it but would he be? Is anyone ever really cool with time travel? I am not that much bigger than when he died but I don't want to go back to then. That was a bad time in my life. I'd want to go back to when I was really little but then I realized I don't have many memories that I would want to go back to. Then, I started thinking about other hunters' kids and asked myself if any of them really had good memories. Our parents tried but they aren't exactly Mary Poppins."
Dean let out a slow breath. "That is a lot to unpack. Don't think about time travel right now. I got there and back in one piece but things can change, even if you don't mean to change them. That is too dangerous to even consider right now. You may have to dig deep for those memories. I'm sure you have plenty of good ones but maybe right after, he had to leave for a hunt. So, those bad times can overshadow the good ones. Your dad loved you."
Kate sighed. "I know he did. Just like the John of your childhood loved you but he is kind of a better dad now than he was back then. I know, there are good reasons. I just...what if Krissy goes through what we went through? There are others out there. You, Sam, Jo... all of you are older than me so I can't fix it. Krissy is little though. How long will it be before she is just as messed up as the rest of us?"
"Now, I wouldn't say we are messed up."
Kate interrupted him with a raised eyebrow. "If any one of us spoke to a psychologist, we would wind up in a mental hospital."
"Okay, but we put the fun in dysfunctional," Dean said with a slight smile.
Kate rolled her eyes. "I just mean... I know that life before and after the supernatural is different. It is like war. You never really heal and it gives you a new perspective. There has to be something better though. I have stability here. Sure, things are hard and complicated but I'm not bouncing around motel rooms on the daily."
"You are worrying about a problem that is much, much, bigger than you are." Dean said.
"Is it though? If no one even attempts to find a solution, the problem keeps being a problem."
Dean studied Kate for a moment. Maybe she was growing up in more ways than just gaining new abilities. "Okay, how about you write ideas down. Do not, for the love of god, do not pull any Kate-level stunts to remedy this."
"Of course not. I'll save that for if Abaddon comes back." Kate said with a smirk.
Dean grumbled and shook his head. "Four-year-old you thought I looked old. I should have told you it was due to putting up with 12 year old you."
Kate grinned. "See, try saying that to a therapist. Loony bin."
Dean ruffled her hair. "If I'm the first to wind up in the loony bin, I won't be surprised."
"I'll come visit you every day." Kate said, lightly.
"You want me to get out eventually, right?"
Kate scrunched her nose. "I'll just add that to the long list of emotional damage I've been subjected to over the years."
Dean lightly flicked her ear. "I've heard the tally system is the best way to keep track of it."
Kate smiled and drew an imaginary tally mark in the air.
Dean got up. "Jess has been overthinking things as well. I'm hesitant to say that you should go talk to her. I'm not sure if you will help each other or add fuel to the fire."
Kate hopped up to go find Jess. "That's okay. I know for a fact that you like fire."
Dean grimaced. "Real fire. Not your kind of fire."
Kate shrugged. "Sounds like a you problem."
Jess, like Kate, had been lost in her own thoughts. She was glad to have someone to help channel her energy. "So what do we do first?"
"Well, are you wanting to look at the missing kids database or start a project closer to home?" Kate asked.
Jess frowned. "Both."
Kate borrowed Sam's computer and sat down at the table. She searched for missing children in South Dakota. The list was long and spanned decades. She refined searches and came up empty-handed. Most of the cases were cold. Of course, they could, possibly, track down children that had died. Most children didn't become ghosts but some did. That is what sparked Jess's interest. Needing a morale booster Kate got the idea to search for Dean's name. There was more than one Dean Winchester. She opened one of the links and gasped loudly. "Dean!"
Dean looked over her shoulder and quickly shut the computer.
"When was that? What were you wearing? Why is your face so red?" Kate blurted out.
Dean kept the computer shut. "None of your business."
Sam was more than willing to join in on whatever was going on. He held Dean back so that she could open the computer again.
After much prodding and giggling about the photos, Dean caved. "Fine. I stayed at this... this place for delinquents. I wasn't there that long."
"When?" Sam asked.
Dean groaned. "I don't know. I was fourteen or fifteen. It doesn't matter. Uh, I got caught stealing bread and the sheriff shipped me off there. Dad wanted me to learn a lesson. The guy that runs the place is good people. I may have tried wrestling, briefly."
"That would explain the onesie." Kate said with a smirk.
Dean lightly smacked the back of her head. "Very funny."
"It says here that you won. Looks like you were good." Sam said.
Dean blushed deeply. "Enough about that, let's look up Sam."
Kate giddily typed in Sam's name. Only one relevant link showed up and of course, it was a science fair.
Sam was shocked. That was one of the few times they stayed somewhere long enough for him to participate in a science fair.
Dean scoffed. "Of course, geek boy."
Sam grinned. "At least I have clothes on in the picture."
Dean shoved him. "Bitch."
"Jerk." Sam shot back. "Print that."
Dean grabbed Kate's shoulder. "If you print the wrestling photos I will skin you."
Kate snickered. "I will not print them."
"Not just right now. That means ever." Dean said.
Kate had already planned on mass-producing the photos to hang all over his room. The opportunity was too much to pass up.
"What about you?" Jess asked. "I know I've been in the newspaper a few times but it is all boring stuff."
Kate chewed her cheek. "I don't think I have. I don't think Sioux Falls did a piece on what happened with Natasha. Plus, I was too young before so I didn't do any school projects or sports."
"You never know," Jess said.
Kate typed in 'Katelyn Winchester' and nothing came up. She sighed and typed in 'Katelyn O'Connor'. She read the link and summary. It was a news story about a hospital. She clicked it and realized it was from when she had meningitis as a baby. She read the paragraph out loud. "The doctor got all the credit for my recovery." She scrolled and saw a photo. Her dad was holding her. It was bitter-sweet. She looked at Jess. "This is my dad." She got sad. "So this was the day or day after he sold his soul."
Dean put a comforting hand on her back. "Do you want to print it?"
Kate looked at the other people in the picture. It was a slap in the face knowing that those doctors had nothing to do with her recovery. It was all Brian. She suddenly slammed the computer shut and ran up to her room. She couldn't breathe. She wanted to scream but no sound would come out.
Dean ran after her and opened the door. "Hey, what happened?"
Kate couldn't help but scratch her skin. It was the only thing that made her brain slow down. When Dean's hands clamped around each of her wrists she sunk to the floor in a puddle of tears. "It's all my fault."
Dean had no idea at all what caused the meltdown. "What is?"
"Everything." Kate hiccuped.
Dean picked her up and wrapped his arms around her. "Breathe in. Breathe out. There you go. Slowly."
Kate calmed enough to talk. "It is him."
Dean squeezed her lightly. "What do you mean?"
Kate wiggled out of his arms and grabbed her trashcan. She dumped dozens of crumpled papers onto her bed.
Dean sighed. "Is this from trying to draw the face of the freak from your vision?"
Kate nodded.
"Is it scaring you?" Dean asked.
Kate shook her head. She ripped the newest drawing from her notebook and held it up. "The doctor. The one that got credit for saving me. He was the creature."
Dean couldn't recall the face. "So do you think he knows how to get rid of them?"
Kate threw the paper down and paced. "No! He was working with Hellen. She was working with a scientist on creating the freaks. Do the math Dean!"
"Kate, take a breath. You are jumping to conclusions." Dean said.
Kate spun around. "No, I'm not. I saw things, Dean. I saw things through Hellen and I had visions. 10 years! We know that the freaks were created to fight hellhounds. We knew that part of it. 10 years after what? 10 years after me."
Dean felt like he was getting whiplash. "Then he would have been gone when Brian died."
"No. No, because the freaks are strong. They can probably get rid of hellhounds. If hellhounds do not get to you, you can't go to hell." Kate said, anxiously.
"Stay with me. None of this is your fault. Even if he is the same person, this isn't your fault." Dean said.
Kate cracked her knuckles. "Dean, I'm not supposed to be here. I was created. I'm not natural. I'm like a splinter in the timeline. Things are going to continue to fester and spread until things are too far gone to help."
"You are not a splinter. Yes, you were created. You were created to stop the apocalypse. Add to that, you are supposed to stop Sam and me from starting it."
Kate shook her head. "No. That is what we were told. Taylor, Taylor can help. All I do is cause bad things to happen."
"You are about to spiral. You do not cause bad things to happen. Sometimes, bad things happen to you. I need you to calm down."
Kate swiftly left the room and ran down the stairs. She ignored Sam and Jess's faces and opened the computer. She typed in the doctor's name and found several articles about him. He was unknown until he cured her and then he had several breakthroughs. Of course, if he made a deal, he'd have breakthroughs. What would a doctor wish for if not notoriety from helping people?
Jess touched Kate's arm. "Kate, what is going on?"
Dean stepped into the kitchen. "She had a vision where one of the creatures entered Hellen's house and attacked her. The face was familiar. She thinks it was this doctor."
"I know it is!"
"Don't yell at me. I am trying to explain." Dean said.
"I know it is him. It makes sense. Look at this. Three months after he 'healed' me, he had three back to back to back cases of meningitis that magically went from dire to cured. Here is another article. He wasn't an oncologist but he waltzes in and two-stage four cancer patients had blood work come back with no signs of cancer cells. There are more articles. Then, suddenly he drops off the map. He decides to leave his practice. Nothing else has been written except two articles speculating as to where he went and why." Kate said.
They couldn't deny that it did sound like a demon deal.
Dean wasn't prepared to tell her she was wrong but there was no way that it was her fault. It wasn't. If he made a deal it is because he chose to. She was an infant. He knew that with absolute certainty but he couldn't easily convince her. First, she found a problem. Then, she decided it was her fault. Then, she took it upon herself to fix the problem. That always ended with her throwing herself into harm's way. They needed to put a stop to it before it got to that point. Was this one of the bad times? He would have appreciated it if older Kate gave him notes. 'Good times and then bad times' was so vague. Did she have specific dates?
Kate shut the computer. "Castiel knows where a lab is. He has never gone in. Now we can. We know who is there."
"No. Nope. Nope. We do not have proof. You may be right but that doesn't mean we can run in guns blazing." Dean said.
"If he is human, he won't be an issue. If he turned and is one of the creatures, Cas and I can take care of it." Kate said.
Dean considered if knowing how things were going to go was just by being jaded or if he could see the future. Did it count as seeing the future if the same exact thing happened every single time? "Stop. We need more research. If this is the same guy, and he is human, do you not think it could be a trap? You are going to work yourself up and go off the rails."
Kate sat back. She always went off the rails. Maybe Dean was right. Maybe she was right. "So help me research."
There was only so much research to be done from a home computer. They exhausted what they could do and turned to Ash for help.
Ash was a computer whiz. He could hack into just about anything. If someone was going to find hidden files, it would be Ash.
Ellen answered the roadhouse phone and smiled. "Dean, nice to hear from you." She snorted. "Yeah, I'll get Ash. Ash!"
Ash rolled off the pool table and stumbled over to the bar. "Here."
"Dean is on the phone," Ellen said and handed it over.
Ash was hungover but he rarely wasn't. "Deano, how can I help you today?"
Dean explained the situation. "Dr. Greg Bohannan."
Ash typed a few things into his search engine. "You know, I have an... associate that can get you right into that system."
Dean furrowed his eyebrows. "Why can't you?"
Ash glanced at the computer that had fallen victim to a brawl. "My setup has seen better days."
"Do you trust this associate?" Dean asked.
"I do. I'll send over the information and give them a call." Ash said.
Dean sat back and waited for an email. "Kate, we are going to do this as a team. I need you to swear on your life that you will wait."
Kate crossed her arms. "Me swearing on my life would have the same outcome if I jump in anyway."
"Kate," Dean said.
"Or does that count as gambling with my life too?" Kate asked.
Dean stood up. "Upstairs."
Kate dropped her arms. "I was kidding."
"Go. Up. Stairs." Dean said.
Jess started to say something but Sam shook his head.
Kate reluctantly left the table and went upstairs. Maybe she pushed him too far.
"Sit," Dean said and sat on Taylor's bed. "You and I need to come to an understanding. I do not want sarcastic answers. I want you to listen. I believe you. I trust you. You have seen things I haven't and can piece things together. I am helping you track down information. You cannot go off on your own. You cannot get an idea and try to tackle it alone. This is big. If this is all connected to you, it stands to reason that you are being targeted. You do have certain qualities that will make you a target. I mean, you can heal people. Your blood has healing properties. Depending on how much Hellen did or if this doctor took blood from you to study, the worst possible place for you to be would be face to face with him."
"You could have said that downstairs," Kate said.
Dean narrowed his eyes. "That is what I am talking about. The sarcasm. This is serious. If you keep it up, we will have issues. We have to do this differently than in previous times. You find ideas and take off running with no regard for your life. In a way, that is brave. You do not need to put your life at risk. We can do this together. You would be pissed at me if I didn't think things through. Every time I go on a hunt you tell me to be careful and you worry. I feel the same way. So, we are going to all work together and think things through. Now, if you cannot keep that plan in mind, I will knock sense back into you."
Kate slumped. "Wait, what if you lose sight of the plan and do something stupid?"
Dean smirked. "Well, I give you permission to rat me out to dad."
Kate pulled herself together. "I promise to keep all of my plans in my head or on paper."
"That's all I ask," Dean said.
A notification popped up letting Sam know that he got an email. He looked at it and was a little surprised that Ash's associate responded so quickly. When Dean and Kate returned he told them about the email. "CB says to 'send me the deets, broskis.' whatever that means."
"CB sounds fun," Kate said and read the email for herself.
"Awful familiar for someone he's never met," Sam said.
Kate typed out details and hit send. "Who cares if we find answers?"
As hours passed, CB worked on cracking open the hospital's database. As a true professional, the files were stolen and uploaded to another, encrypted database in record time.
Sam heard another notification. "Whoa, look. These are patient files too. We can look at what they were sick with and when they got better."
Kate turned the computer and sent a message back. She was thrilled with the rapid replies and wealth of information. She felt an instant connection to CB and had plenty of things she wanted to get done. She hit send and clicked on one of the files.
"What did you just send?" Dean asked.
Kate's mouth fell open. "I asked if they could look at case files."
Dean blinked slowly. "What was that I said about working together?"
"Well.. I... I mean.. they got hospital files without question. Think of how much easier hunting would be if you could get the files virtually and didn't need to sneak into the actual station or pose as a detective." Kate said.
"We do not know this person. Who says they won't turn you into the police?" Dean asked.
Kate sighed. "I'm 12. Obviously, I am not always the most rational. If all goes wrong and the police kick down the door, you tell them I did it. It is the truth plus I have been through a lot. So, they see me, the bratty younger sister who decided she could save the world."
"You won't do well in jail," Dean said.
"Sure I will. All I have to do is heal a few cuts and scrapes and I'm top dog." Kate said.
Dean smacked her leg. "You aren't going to jail. Just be a little more cautious. They may help us with this but we went out on a limb to get this far."
Kate sighed. "Noted."
CB was enthusiastic when asked about case files.
Kate was reading files when another notification appeared. She smirked. "CB is all for sticking it to the man and thinks the system is all kinds of jacked."
Dean called John to tell him about the information they were putting together. He knew John had been loosely tracking the lab with Cas. They just didn't know what to do until they learned the possible identity of the scientist. Kate was quick. She was excellent at finding clues. She just needed to learn to wait.
(Taylor and Jo)
Taylor helped Rod as much as he could. He liked having the added strength. Rod was strong but also getting older. Taylor had gotten to spend time with his grandparents when he was younger but he felt like he had missed most of the time he should have had. Before he and Kate healed Rod, he was frail and headed for hospice. Seeing him work around the farm made Taylor realize he wouldn't be able to do that forever. "Grandpa, what is going to happen to this place when you are gone?"
Rod put his shovel down. "Are you planning something?"
Taylor shook his head. "No. Not at all. I just feel like you guys do so much for me and I give nothing back."
"You are my grandson. It isn't your job to give back." Rod said.
"Eventually it is. That is the whole reason people have kids, right? Right now, I live at Bobby's house. I learn fast. I just don't know how I will keep this going. I don't feel qualified." Taylor said.
"You don't have to." Rod said, "Just because I chose to do this, doesn't mean I expected my own children or grandchildren to take over."
Taylor still wasn't sure. "You have done so much work. You can't just let it all go to waste."
Rod put a hand on Taylor's shoulder. "As long as you are taken care of, none of it matters. This is how we chose to make money. If you chose to do the same, I'll show you the ropes. I have a few guys that help me out or work the fields. You could even take over management and leave the farming to them."
"I just really appreciate all that you do and feel guilty," Taylor said.
"You just make sure to call often and come hang out. That is all I ask of you." Rod said.
Jo was also on a guilt trip. Time away from Ellen gave her time to think. Marie also gave her insight.
Misty, Marie's daughter, and Taylor's mother distanced herself from her parents. She made choices they weren't fond of and didn't like their feedback. She got married to Craig, although neither of them thought he was a good person. She moved away and didn't contact them. They didn't know how severe Craig was with Taylor until it was much too late.
Jo didn't want to go down that path. She thought she had better sense than Misty did but John, and definitely Ellen would strongly disagree. "Did you want her to apologize or move back?"
"I didn't want her to suffer," Marie said. "We were never overbearing. We supported free will. Although, we did care. We wanted the best for her and it worried us when she moved away. I never wanted an apology. I wish I had convinced her to listen."
Hearing Marie's pain made Jo realize that Ellen was still in pain. She lost the love of her life and likely felt like she was losing Jo as well. "I should call her."
Marie smiled warmly. "Whatever you say to her, make sure it is something you will keep your promise on."
Jo made a few decisions in her head and sat down on the porch to call Ellen. "Hey, mom. Yes, I am having a good time. Listen, I.. I just wanted to say I'm sorry and I think I'm ready to come home."
(Bobby's house)
Kate sent messages back and forth with CB until late in the evening. Their personalities clicked. Kate hoped CB wasn't some 40-year-old guy living in his mom's basement. That would kill the friendship. She knew anonymity was important to hackers. She wanted to offer a piece of herself to gain more trust. 'My name is Kate, what is yours?'
Five minutes later an email came through with Kate's answer.
Dean looked up from a paper he was reading. "What is it?"
Kate smiled. "CB. The C stands for Charlie."
