Author's note: A few trigger warnings, discipline of a child.
(Bobby's house)
Rufus left the next morning. He had a lot to think about, although he no longer thought the kids were bad news. Even if they were, his back and knees felt amazing.
Bobby had been holding onto tension, knowing that one day he would have to tell Rufus about Karen. It didn't' go down the way he planned for it to but somehow, that was better.
Karen was initially put off by Rufus, but she got to listen to him and Bobby talk. She knew Bobby before the demon got to her. Rufus knew Bobby afterwards. She knew the gentle soul that gathered wildflowers for her on his way home. Rufus knew the grief-stricken grump that Bobby had become after her death.
Kate liked Rufus because he got Bobby worked up. He was quite the character and seemed like a good person, even if he tried to hide it.
Taylor had a game coming up. He enjoyed the reprieve that Rufus brought, in the form of a distraction. However, he needed to focus on football again. His coach had not mentioned the weight room incident again, but Taylor figured he'd bring it up when he got the chance. He was mortified that he let someone see him. To add insult to injury, there were cameras. He could have blown his cover in a big way. He could be locked in some kind of government facility while they ran tests on him. If they did that, surely, they'd notice Kate too. If the government got involved, they'd look into the others, and he was certain that John had a few warrants out for his arrest. Oh god, Karen. They'd see that Karen was dead but show up at the house and she'd be alive.
Dean tapped Taylor's forehead. "You're doing the thing that Kate does before she does something silly."
Taylor blinked. "Thinking?"
Dean chuckled. "Yes."
"I messed up." Taylor said.
Dean motioned for him to sit down. "What did you do?"
"I caught a weight and my coach got it on tape." Taylor said.
Dean furrowed his eyebrows. "Again?"
"No." Taylor said.
Dean gave him an odd look.
"I let my guard down. I messed up. If he chose to tell someone, we'd all be in jail or a top-secret government facility getting tests run on us." Taylor said.
Dean rubbed his face. "He deleted it though."
"I know." Taylor said. "I just.."
"Do you want me to kick your butt? I can do that if it helps you stop worrying." Dean said with a smirk.
"No thanks." Taylor said. "Rufus handled the news. How many people are going to find out? Hunters can be dangerous but they already know about stuff so the good ones don't freak out. My coach isn't' a hunter. That could have gone badly."
"So just chill. Kate can compel him if he gets antsy." Dean said.
Taylor sighed. "Okay."
Dean eyed him for a moment. "Okay?"
"I mean, you're right. I just panic at times." Taylor said. "I know everything is okay. I have this game coming up. I can't avoid him at a game."
"You'll be fine."
"Thanks, Dean." Taylor said. He got up and popped his back. "I am going to run a few laps."
Dean leaned back in his seat with his hands behind his head. If only Kate was as easy as Taylor was. He chewed his cheek. Where was Kate?
Kate was in the kitchen, working on a sketch. She chewed the end of her pencil between scribbles.
Dean cleared his throat. "Chew toy?"
Kate smiled. "I'm good."
Dean sat across form her and flipped his chair around. "Who are you drawing?"
Kate spun the paper around. "Dad."
Dean tilted his head. It was John but he didn't look happy. "Pissed off dad?"
Kate shrugged. "I draw what my brain tells me to."
Dean poked the paper with his finger. "Maybe take a good look at that face and don't cause him to look like that in real life."
Kate snorted. "Maybe it isn't me that causes it."
Dean fake laughed. "You're hilarious."
"Go away so I can focus." Kate said with a half-smile.
Charlie repacked her bag. "I'm ready to go."
Dean grabbed his keys. He had agreed to drive Charlie back to Rod and Marie's house. He thought that she seemed a little off and decided to ask her about it once they got on the road.
Charlie had a stack of files to look at. Her job was to add the names and circumstances to a spread sheet so that they could cross reference them when needed. She did find herself diving deeper into the files though. John told her to be careful because the content could have effects on her, but she felt like she could handle it. At least a few of the files were from orphans. One was a year old when the file started. It suddenly ended a few months later. She hoped it was because the baby got adopted and moved.
Dean turned onto the interstate and leaned back. "What is going through your head?"
"Huh?" Charlie asked.
"Huh?" Dean mimicked her high pitched voice.
Charlie gave him a bad look.
"You're thinking. Taylor was doing that too. Thinking will get you nowhere good." Dean said.
Charlie raised an eyebrow. "Is that why you seem to be perfect?"
Dean sucked air through his teeth. "I walked into that one. I don't want anyone spiraling on my watch. So, what is on your mind?"
Charlie zipped her sweatshirt and pulled the hood over her head. "These files."
"Ah, are they too much?" Dean asked.
"No. I just wonder. Some of these kids were babies. The symptoms are weird. Then, some just drop off the face of the earth. This one's parents died, and she was an orphan. The file ends. Did she get adopted or..."
"Let's say she got adopted." Dean said. "Didn't my dad tell you to just look at the first page?"
"Uh, he told me to be careful." Charlie said.
Dean snorted. "Don't look into the files yet. We are trying to organize them. You can read too much and see things that aren't there."
"You don't wonder what happened to everyone?" Charlie asked.
"Of course, I do." Dean said. "Making assumptions doesn't help anyone, though."
Kate decided to go upstairs after Dean and Charlie left. She remembered the rift and looked at it through the window. She needed to tell someone. It was intriguing and called to her. She opened the window but didn't go out onto the roof. Maybe the rift had something to do with the odd dreams. How long had it been there? What was it? Her curiosity was almost painful. Was there a safer way to see what was on the other side?
(John)
John had a gut feeling and asked Ash to help him track some information down. One way or the other didn't matter too much but he didn't like being in the dark. He was on the phone with Ash when he got to Bobby's house. He wrote a few things down and rubbed his face. When had his gut ever been wrong? What was he going to do with the information? He ended the call and went inside to talk to Bobby.
Kate ran down the stairs. "Hey, dad."
John paused. "Hey, Kate."
"Can I talk to you?" Kate asked.
"Is it important? I need to talk to Bobby." John said.
Kate chewed her cheek. "I can wait."
John turned to Bobby's office and sat down in the chair across from him. "I asked Ash to look into Charlie."
Bobby sat up straight. "Why?"
"I just had a feeling." John said.
Bobby slowly leaned back to rest his back on the back of the chair. "And?"
"She got into some trouble before her parents died. She got into a bit more after that." John said.
Bobby motioned for him to continue.
"It was just hacking into stuff that she probably shouldn't have. We've all done things. She changed her name and moved around after one of those." John said.
"We knew that." Bobby said.
John handed him a note pad. "Gertrude and Robert Middleton had one child, Celest Middleton."
Bobby read the notes. "She doesn't look like a Celest to me."
John shook his head. "She was born on July 6, 1986."
Bobby scratched his chin. He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head. "That would make her..."
"She turned 16 in July." John said.
"So, she lied about her age. You can't fault the kid." Bobby said.
"I don't. Her ID says she is going to turn 18 in November. That isn't the same thing as being a newly 16-year-old." John said.
"What do you want to do?" Bobby asked.
John took his notes back. "She is a kid. She is barely older than Taylor. She can't go off on her own."
Bobby nodded. "Talk to Rod and Marie."
(2 hours later)
Charlie was happy to be at Marie's house again. She loved Bobby's house, but she also liked solitude. Her books were there. The rest of her computer system was there.
Dean followed Charlie into the house. He wasn't a beggar, but he hoped his precents meant that Marie would feed him. He saw Krissy at the edge of the room and snorted. The look she was giving Charlie was funny because it wasn't aimed at him.
Marie hugged Charlie. "Welcome back."
Charlie grinned. "Thanks."
Dean's wish was granted as Marie had prepared lunch for them. He licked his lips and dug into his plate full of food.
Charlie was oblivious to the looks that Marie and Rod were giving each other.
Dean noticed it though.
After dinner, Charlie went to her room to put her stuff away.
Rod talked to Dean. "Your dad called. She isn't as old as she says she is."
Dean's eyes widened. "Is she really 12?"
Rod cracked a smile. "No, barely 16."
Dean let out the breath he was holding. "So, she fibbed about a year."
"A bit over a year." Rod said.
"Is that a problem?" Dean asked.
Rod shook his head. "No. We just had something to talk to her about."
Dean listened to what Rod had to say and agreed with him.
Marie had Charlie go to the living room so that they could chat.
Krissy wanted to take part in the conversation, but Marie had asked Desiree to take her for an hour. She wrapped her arms around the rungs of a chair and shook her head. "I don't want to go."
Rod sighed. "You are going to play with Ben and the twins."
"I don't want to." Krissy protested.
Rod had to hold her upside down by her waist with one arm and pry her fingers away from the chair with the other hand. He groaned when she managed to get another hand wrapped around another rung. She was scrappy. He cleared his throat. "Do I need to count?"
Krissy let go and crossed her arms. "No."
"You can go play with them and then I'll come pick you up on the four-wheeler." Rod said.
Krissy perked up. "Okay. Bye!"
Dean grinned. She changed moods as fast as Kate did.
Charlie began to worry a bit as Krissy was sent away. She realized she was in a room with three adults. That never had a happy ending.
Marie took over since she was soft spoken. "We want to talk to you about your age."
Charlie licked her lips. "About me turning 18?"
Marie gave her a sad smile. "Sweetie, we know you just turned 16."
Charlie's mouth dropped open. "How?" She wracked her brain and bristled. "Did you background check me?"
"No." Marie said. "Ash did."
Charlie's stomach flipped. If they knew her birthday, they knew she was on the run from more than one agency.
Marie reached over to take both of Charlie's hands. "No one is angry at you. Rod and I have an offer for you. We had talked about it before but especially now."
Charlie squeaked. "What?"
"This is up to you. We would like to adopt you. It could be on paper so that you never have to worry about someone else finding out your age. You could keep your current name or take ours. We want to do what is best for you and what is going to make you comfortable." Marie said.
Charlie looked from Marie to Rod. "Adopt me?"
"Yes." Rod said. "Like Marie said, you do not have to go through with a full adoption but we would be happy for you to do so. If you just want our name on some papers, that is fine too."
Dean gave Charlie a reassuring smile.
"School?" Charlie asked with a frown.
"You are incredibly smart. If the system knows you are 16, they will want proof that you finished school. We would never make you go. However, you could complete your education here at the house. You'd take a few tests to show where you are at academically. I bet you'd be able to zip through it." Marie said.
Charlie buried her face in her hands and sobbed.
Marie sat beside her. "Oh, I'm so sorry if this is too much."
Charlie moved her hands to wrap her arms around Marie's neck. "Why would you do this?"
"We enjoy having you around. You need stability." Marie said.
Charlie sniffled. "I'm sorry that I lied."
Marie rubbed her back. "Don't worry about that."
Charlie slowly calmed down and nodded her head. "I want to do it."
Dean felt like he was intruding so he stepped outside to let John know what was going on.
Marie was delighted. Charlie was a blessing and she was pleased that their offer made Charlie happy.
Charlie wiped her eyes. "Can I go by Cooper?"
"Of course." Rod said. He felt his heart swell with pride that she would want their last name. "Charlie Cooper has a nice ring to it."
Charlie smiled. "Yeah, if I sign things as Cooper, it still hides that I'm a girl."
Rod chuckled. "I'll get those papers drawn up."
Dean talked to Charlie before he left. "So, you lied to me. You were 15 when we met you."
Charlie's face turned pink.
Dean lightly cuffed the back of her head. "Don't lie to me again."
Charlie smiled. "I'm glad you aren't angry at me."
"You're a human Care Bear. Who would stay mad at you?" Dean asked. "Congrats, kid. You have two amazing adoptive parents."
Charlie took a deep breath. "Thanks for kidnapping me."
Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "I did not kidnap you."
"I found myself in the back of your car, unconscious." Charlie said.
"Hey, you passed out." Dean said. His eyes twinkled. "Go enjoy your new family. As soon as Krissy gets back, she might try to get rid of you."
Charlie grimaced. "I lock my door at night."
Dean laughed. "Let's hope she can't pick a lock."
(Sioux Falls)
Kate stared at the rift. She was going to tell John, but he had something else going on. She would wait and tell him once he was done. The light was mesmerizing. She thought of ways to look through it. She could tie a camera to a string. That would give her a view without getting hurt. Of course, she'd have to convince John that it was okay. Was it okay? She heard the ringing again and swallowed. She needed to tell him.
John was glad that Charlie got her happy ending. He didn't want her alone in the world. He didn't want that if she was 18 but she slipped by him as a 15-year-old.
Kate heard John's voice and went back downstairs. "Hey, I need to show you something."
John started to go with her but his phone buzzed. "Hello?"
April was on the other end of the phone. "I can't find Andy."
John put his boots back on. "How long has he been missing?"
Kate's mouth was open as she processed what happened. Andy was missing. Why did things only happen when she was trying to show him the rift? Maybe the universe didn't want him seeing it. Maybe her older self was pulling strings because he wasn't supposed to see it yet.
John drove over to April's house. "Where is Caleb?"
"On his way." April said. "I'm sorry. I just can't find him."
John stepped into the house. "When did he go missing?"
April wiped her face with a tissue. "Maybe an hour ago."
John raised his eyebrows.
April sighed. "Jimmy was playing outside on the sidewalk. Andy tried to hit him with a water balloon. I scolded him because he is supposed to ignore Jimmy. I sent him to his room, and he argued about it. He got mad and stormed off. He was in his room earlier. I know he was. I don't think he left that long ago but how could I know? I haven't laid eyes on him in about an hour."
John looked around the house before going outside. He didn't think Andy would have gone far but an angry 7-year-old boy could be unpredictable. He went back inside. "Is there any way that he could have gone outside through one of the doors?"
April couldn't be sure. "I don't think so."
John went back to Andy's room. The window was cracked. The salt was not in a perfect line. He didn't mention it to April because she would instantly panic. Had he gone outside, he would have to jump to get down. He didn't think Andy could do that without hurting himself. He thought back to when Sam was younger. Before he got up the nerve to run to Flagstaff, he would disappear in plain sight. He told April to look around the house in any space that he could fit through.
April had done that. "I did but I'll check again."
John was a hunter. He could follow a trail, even if it wasn't there. He looked in closets and cabinets. He checked April and Caleb's room and paused to think like Sam. He went back to Andy's room and opened the closet. At the top, there were two boxes and a stack of clothes. He scratched his chin. He moved the box and grabbed Andy's leg.
Andy yelped and scrambled. He kicked and felt himself getting pulled from the shelf.
John put his feet on the ground. "Stop fighting."
Andy's eyes were wide, and he gasped. He had fallen asleep and thought a monster had grabbed him.
John turned to put the boxes back on the shelf.
Andy panicked and ran for the front door. He pulled it open and promptly ran into Caleb.
Caleb hauled him back into the house. "What the hell are you doing?"
Andy just stared at him.
"He was asleep in the top of his closet, behind boxes." John said.
April wrapped her arms around Andy and squeezed him. "I thought you ran away, or something happened to you."
John didn't need to ask Andy to know what happened. It was such a Sam thing to do. "Did you hide from your mom and fall asleep up there?"
Andy dropped his gaze.
John clapped Caleb on the back. "I'll head out so you can handle this." He stopped. "Look at his window."
April told Caleb the rest of the story while Andy tried to melt into the floor. "I thought he got mad and left."
Caleb couldn't believe that Andy would do that. "Andrew, is this true?"
Andy didn't answer him.
Caleb sat him down in a chair. "Do not move." He went to his room to look at his closet and the window. To hide there, he had to mean to not be found. He saw the window and gritted his teeth. He walked back into the living room. "Did you mess with the salt line?"
Andy looked at him with wide eyes.
"Andrew Ethan Fisher, did you mess with the salt line?" Caleb asked again. "Either you planned to go out the window and jump or you messed with it to scare your mom."
Andy shook his head. "I wasn't gonna jump."
"So that means you wanted her to think a demon came in and grabbed you." Caleb said.
Andy whimpered and looked at his hands. "I fell asleep."
"You slept through her calling your name?" Caleb asked.
Andy spoke before he meant to. "I heard her the first couple times."
Caleb spoke to April in another room. He hugged her. "I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"
April nodded into his chest. "I thought he slipped out. I thought something happened to him."
Caleb rested his chin on her head. "Kids can be little assholes."
April laughed weakly. "I was going to have him sit in his room and think about what he did."
"He had to make it worse." Caleb said with a sigh. "Unless you have objections, I'm going to go have a long talk with him."
April sighed. "I'm sorry."
"Not your fault." Caleb said. "He's going to be a wonderful young man one day. He's just got to learn a few lessons along the way."
((TW))
Andy stared at Caleb as he walked back into the living room. He didn't mean to fall asleep and make her worry that long. He just wanted to scare her a little bit.
Caleb closed his eyes for a moment and steadied himself. "Let's go."
Andy shrunk.
Caleb gave him 'the look'.
Andy groaned and walked to his room. He thought that people going to the gallows probably felt like he did at that moment.
Caleb had Andy sit on his bed. "What do you have to say for yourself?"
Andy frowned.
"Either you can speak up or I will make assumptions." Caleb said.
"I didn't mean to fall asleep." Andy said.
"Why did you hide in your closet?" Caleb asked.
"I was mad at mom." Andy said.
"Why were you mad?"
"Jimmy was too close to the house. All I did was drop water balloons. Then she got mad and sent me in here." Andy said, clearly still disagreeing with April.
Caleb nodded. "You were told to leave Jimmy alone. He has not been bothering you, has he?"
Andy didn't answer.
Caleb walked over to the window. "Why is your window open?"
Andy blinked.
"Then I'm going to assume my earlier statement was right." Caleb said. "You know better."
Andy slumped. "I was just mad."
Caleb thought for a moment. He sat down. "Stand up."
Andy stepped away from him.
"If you do not do exactly as you are told, I will go back downstairs and get the stir stick." Caleb warned.
Andy abandoned his plan and stepped over to Caleb.
Caleb pulled him to stand between his knees. "Do you have anything else to say?"
Andy shook his head.
Caleb positioned him over his lap and sighed. "Why are you here?"
Andy bit his lip.
Caleb swatted him. "Why are you here, Andrew?"
Andy yelped. "I scared mom."
Caleb started landing steady swats. "You did scare mom. You messed with Jimmy, which by the way, you would have been forgiven for after a time out in your room. That is not going to fly."
Andy wiggled. "I'm sorry."
Caleb didn't doubt that. "You scared her a lot. She had to call John. She had to call me home from work because she couldn't find you. Did you hear her calling for you?"
Andy threw his hand back. "I heard her. I'm sorry. Then I fell asleep."
Caleb moved his hand. "You opened your window and messed with the salt line. Do you realize how dangerous that is?" He didn't get a response that he could understand. His heart broke. "A demon could have gotten in. That is our last line of defense." He tugged Andy's jeans down to his knees and tilted him.
Andy felt really bad about scaring his mom but the hard swats he got to his thighs made him forget about that in an effort to escape Caleb's hand.
Caleb paused. "You will never scare her like that again. You will not mess with the salt lines. You will not mess with Jimmy."
Andy sniffled. "I won't."
Caleb gave him another swat on each leg and let him stand.
Andy rubbed the sting away and stomped his feet. Had John spoken to his dad? Was his dad holding back before?
Caleb sighed and pulled him into a hug. "I hate doing this, kid. You are important and loved. Please never fake something like this again. Your mom was terrified."
((ETW))
Andy regained composure a few minutes later. "I thought a monster had grabbed me when John found me."
Caleb chuckled. "Hopefully that reminds you not to do stuff like that."
Andy winced. "I need to tell mama that I'm sorry."
Caleb nodded and stood up. He took Andy's hand and walked him down to the kitchen.
Andy let go of Caleb's hand and approached April. "I'm really sorry for scaring you, mom."
April accepted his apology. She gave him a stern look. "If you do something like that again, I'll wear you out with a wooden spoon before your dad gets ahold of you."
Andy's mouth fell open.
April gently lifted his chin to close his mouth. "I love you."
Andy hugged her. "I love you too, mom."
(Bobby's house)
Kate had tried to tell John about the rift. The first time, Rufus dropped in. The second time, he had to take care of something with Charlie. The third time, he had to run off to find Andy. That was odd. It wasn't odd that the day was chaotic, but it was odd that the timing was so precise. She would try again tomorrow. It was late and she was torn. What if the powers that be were trying to tell her something? Waiting was fine.
The next day meant school. Both kids were bored. The day flew by though, because they didn't need to put in any effort.
John needed to run an errand and Taylor needed new gloves for the game. He had Taylor go with him to knock out two birds with one stone.
Bobby and Karen had somewhere to be.
That left Dean alone with Kate. He needed to get out more.
Kate kept taking a look at the rift. It was a big thing. She had to tell someone. The voice in the back of her head told her not to. She sought Dean out and saw him at the shop. She opened the door to the house and a strong wind shut it in her face. That was a sign. That was totally a sign. She would just get a good look at the rift. She had a video camera. She could use a stick like a fishing pole so that she didn't have any contact with it. She hooked the camera up to a thick piece of string and went back to her room. She opened the window and slowly crawled out onto the roof. The rift reacted to her. It was louder, and clearer. The center was black. She couldn't see through it. She slowly held the stick out so that the camera would go through the rift. She dangled it for a minute before pulling it back. She replayed the footage. It was fuzzy with a lot of interference. She could see Bobby's yard and chewed her cheek. Did that mean that nothing was there? She replayed the footage and noted a few differences. In the video, there were cars parked by an old sign. When she looked out at the yard, there was one car that belonged to Ian. It was small. She gasped. What if she was seeing another timeline?
Dean heard something and stepped out of the shop. He didn't see anything at first so he returned to his car.
Kate swallowed hard and reached out to touch the strange light. It felt familiar.
Dean saw a flash of light and ran out of the shop. He looked up to the roof and yelled. "Kate, what the hell are you doing?"
Kate fell back. "This isn't what it looks like."
Dean arrived in Kate's room in a matter of seconds. He pulled her back through the window and locked it. "Katelyn. What is that?"
Kate held up the camera. "I think it is a portal to another timeline."
Dean watched the footage and took a deep breath. "Kate."
Kate sat the camera down. "I was going to tell someone."
Dean leveled her with a glare. "How long have you known?"
"Uh, a few days but I totally tried to tell dad." Kate defended herself.
Dean sat down on her bed. "What?"
"I was going to tell you guys at dinner, but Rufus showed up. Then, I remembered it was there and was going to tell dad but he found something about Charlie and then Andy had issues." Kate said.
Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "Do you expect me to accept that as an excuse?"
Kate stammered. "I.. the universe or powers that be made it clear. The wind slammed the door when I went to tell you."
Dean crossed his arms. "Even if you couldn't tell us, why were you out on the roof trying to touch it?"
Kate's eyes drifted. "I don't have a good excuse. If you weren't supposed to know, that would mean I needed to see it for myself."
"If I wasn't supposed to know, why do I know now?" Dean asked.
Kate was silent.
((TW))
Dean studied her for a minute. He sighed and pulled her arm so that she would fall across his knees.
Kate scrambled. "Wait. Dean. I didn't mean to."
Dean shifted her. "Either I warm your back side, or you wait for dad to get back and try to explain that to him."
Kate groaned. "I wasn't trying to be bad."
Dean landed a few smacks. "I didn't say that. You were impulsive. You knew you shouldn't be out there."
"This isn't like the freaks." Kate tried.
Dean scoffed. "I know. If that was the case, I'd have my belt off. I don't think you maliciously hid the information. I think you were so curious that you convinced yourself to check it out." He renewed the stinging swats. "That is why you are getting a warning and I'm not handing you over to dad."
Kate sucked in a breath of air. "I feel warned."
Dean smirked and covered her entire backside with swats. He stopped once he was satisfied that he got into her head. The kid was lucky that John hadn't been home. Dean sympathized enough to save her from that, but also knew she needed a reminder.
Kate jumped up as soon as Dean let her up. She cringed. "I didn't mean to."
"You need to follow rules so that your mind doesn't get you into trouble." Dean said.
((ETW))
Kate hoped that John was satisfied with Dean's methods. She was on thin ice already. "I think that is another timeline."
Dean looked out the window. "That's not good. We will get Cas over here."
Kate's breathing hitched. "I did this."
Dean turned around. "What?"
"The night I snapped." Kate said. "I can feel it."
Dean froze. "When that loud pop happened."
Kate felt sick to her stomach.
Dean put a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't do that on purpose."
"What do we do?" Kate asked.
"First we call Cas. I'll call dad and let him know." Dean said.
Kate's face fell.
"I'll tell him I took care of it. He should accept that, but your thin ice just got thinner." Dean said.
Kate groaned. "Damn global warming." She closed her eyes when Dean snickered. "I heard it when I said it."
Dean laughed. "If there was more global warming, maybe you wouldn't wind up on such thin ice."
Kate fell onto her bed. "Go ahead, laugh. I'm going to pretend I didn't set myself up."
Dean grinned. "It was funny."
Kate sat up. "What happened with Charlie."
Dean snapped his fingers. "Dad found out she is younger than she said she was."
Kate gasped. "How much?"
"She turned 16 in July." Dean said.
Kate furrowed her eyebrows. "He wasn't mad, right?"
"No. He got protective. Rod and Marie are adopting her."
Kate squealed. "That is awesome!" Her face went blank before a smirk crossed her face. "You are running an adoption agency."
"What?" Dean asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You picked up Andy and Ian. They got adopted. You picked up Charlie. She's getting adopted. Taylor and I are a bit hazy, but you had to be mother hen and look at us now."
Dean flicked her forehead. "Yeah, look at you now."
