Trivia, McGarrett-Rollins Style (A McRoll in the REAL World Story by Mari, Sammy, and Ilna)
"How did I get so lucky?" Steve asked, grinning at his teammates. "Grandma Ang and Angie?"
"Well, since this is trivia, I don't think luck has much to do with it," Elizabeth said with a smile as she handed them a notepad and pencil.
"Yeah, everyone gets the same questions," DJ said from his seat with his own teammates, Catherine and Joseph.
"And with the wealth of knowledge these two have," Joseph said, motioning to his daughter and grandson, "I like our chances."
"Well, I know we've got any Cubs and goat-related trivia covered," Steve said.
Angie gasped. "Do you think there will be goat trivia questions?" she asked hopefully.
"With Grandma writing the questions," Catherine said, grinning, "I guarantee there will be."
The two teams sat on opposite sides of the living room while Elizabeth took her place in a chair between them, notebook of questions in hand.
"Well, are we ready for the first-ever Rollins/McGarrett trivia night to begin?" she asked.
"Yes!" came DJ's enthusiastic response.
"Yes yes yes!" Angie added.
"Good luck, everyone," Grandma Ang said with a wink.
"Remember to discuss your answers quietly so the other team can't hear," Elizabeth said. "And use your best handwriting so the judge has no trouble reading your answers."
"What's the first question, Grandma?" Angie asked, practically vibrating with excitement.
Elizabeth smiled and opened her notebook of official questions. "The first question …" She looked between the two teams, her smile widening as the clear excitement on her grandchildren's faces. "The first question is, 'How many legs does a spider have?' "
Angie gasped. "I know it!"
"Shhhh," Steve and Grandma Ang reminded her.
"Oh yeah," she whispered, leaning closer to them. "It's eight!"
"I think you're right," Ang agreed.
Steve nodded, motioning for Angie to write their first answer. After she'd written the number down, she looked across the room at the other team and smiled to see they'd clearly already finished writing their own answer.
"I bet DJ knew the answer for sure," she said.
Ang grinned. "I think you're right about that, too."
"Looks like everyone is finished," Elizabeth said. "Question number 2: 'What is the name of Mickey Mouse's pet dog?' "
DJ grinned, cupping his hands around his mouth to whisper, "Pluto," to his teammates.
"Good one, DJ," Joseph said.
"That's what I think, too," Catherine agreed, and DJ wrote down their answer.
"Question number 3: 'What is the tallest animal in the world?' "Elizabeth asked.
"I don't think it's a goat," Steve teased, and his voice was loud enough that DJ giggled.
"You're silly, Daddy," Angie said. She glanced over toward the other team and lowered her voice. "The tallest animal is a giraffe." She paused, thoughtfully. "What if goats were the tallest? That would be so fun!"
"It would be pretty chaotic on the savanna," Steve chuckled.
"Can you help me spell 'giraffe,' Grandma Ang?" Angie asked.
"Of course."
Once both teams were done, Elizabeth continued. "Question 4: 'What is the nickname for the fourth batter in the batting order of a baseball game?' "
Catherine and Joseph looked at DJ. He grinned. "I think we all know this one, too," he said. "The clean-up hitter."
"Oh, you mean your position," Joseph said with a proud smile.
DJ beamed as he wrote.
"And the final question for the first round," Elizabeth said, " 'What color are the stars on the American flag?' "
"White," Angie said confidently. "I bet some people might guess blue because they're in the blue part of the flag, but we all know they're white."
"That's our girl," Grandma Ang said.
"Okay, that's the end of round one," Elizabeth said. "Bring your notepads up for official judging." She smiled as Angie and DJ delivered them to her and she quickly glanced over the answers and nodded. "Tie score! Both teams got all five questions correct."
"Yay!" Angie cheered. "Good job, DJ, Mommy, and Grandpa!"
Steve chuckled. "And what about us?" he asked, motioning to himself and Grandma Ang.
"Good job, us, too!" she said, not losing any of her enthusiasm. Then she beamed at Elizabeth. "And good job, Grandma, for asking all the trivia questions. That was so fun!"
"Yeah, they were really good questions, Grandma," DJ agreed.
"Well, hopefully they'll be even tougher next round, but I'm not sure if I have any that will actually stump anyone is this super-smart crew."
Angie clapped eagerly. "Let's start the next round and see!"
"Okay, everyone, are we ready for the next round?" Elizabeth asked, and flipped through her notebook of questions.
"Bring it on," Steve said, while he exchanged a grin with Catherine, who chuckled softly.
"I'm so excited!" Angie exclaimed, bouncing in her seat with contagious energy. "I hope there's more animal questions!"
"I have a feeling there just might be," Catherine said.
"Okay, here we go," Elizabeth announced, clearing her throat before reading the first question of the second round.
"Name one Cubs player in the Hall of Fame?"
"Ernie Banks," DJ said excitedly, unable to contain his smile. He quickly scribbled the answer, glancing at his team with a confident nod.
"Nice one, DJ," Joseph praised, giving his grandson a proud pat on the back. "Mr. Cub himself."
"What species of bird can fly backward?" Elizabeth asked.
"Backwards?" Angie looked between her father and great grandmother. "I don't know that one, what is it, Daddy?"
"Hummingbirds," Steve whispered while writing it down.
When everyone was done writing Elizabeth moved on to the next question. "What is the largest species of shark?"
Both kids looked at Steve and smiled before answering "Whale shark," for their teams.
"What name does Mulan use while she is disguised?" Elizabeth asked next.
"I know this one," Angie told her teammates confidently. "It's Ping."
DJ was simultaneously telling his teammates the exact same thing.
Elizabeth's smile softened as she asked the next question. "What is it called when caterpillars turn into butterflies?"
"You know that one," DJ told his mother.
"She certainly does," Joseph said softly.
On the other side of the room, Angie's eyebrows knit together. "I can't remember it," she said. "It's a big word."
"Metamorphosis," Grandma Ang said.
"That's it!" Angie said. "Good job!"
Grandma Ang chuckled. "Thanks!"
"This one is a little tougher but I know we've talked about it," Elizabeth said. "What is the largest planet in our solar system?"
"We just studied this in science class," DJ said as he conferred with his teammates.
He looked across the room at Angie who was clearly wracking her brain to remember and couldn't resist offering a little clue.
"We talk about it every time we take a walk," he told her.
A few seconds later Angie's face lit up. "I know!" She turned to Steve and Grandma Ang and lowered her voice. "It's Jupiter. Just like the big fluffy dog we see on our walks. Remember, Daddy?"
"Jupiter is hard to forget," he chuckled.
"Alright, bring up your answers," Elizabeth said, smiling as she collected the answers. After a moment of careful consideration, she announced, "It's another tie! Both teams got all the answers correct again."
By the time they reached the third round both teams were operating like well-oiled machines.
"Which Disney movie is Elsa in?"
"I know this one," Steve said, causing Angie to giggle.
Joseph chuckled. "I think we all do."
"What is the color of an emerald?"
"Is that like from Wizard of Oz?" DJ asked Catherine.
"It sure is," she replied.
"Then it's green," DJ said confidently.
"According to the Dr. Seuss book, who stole Christmas?"
"The Grinch," Angie said. "But then his heart grew three sizes and he gave it back."
"What type of fish is Nemo?" Elizabeth asked.
"Clownfish," DJ and Joseph said in unison.
"And he lives in an ne-ne, I mean-" DJ laughed then slowed down and concentrated on his pronunciation. "An anemone."
Elizabeth grinned as she got ready to ask the next question. "On the farm, what is a kid?"
Angie leapt out of her seat. "I KNOW!"
Steve handed her the answer sheet and she carefully spelled out a word that was very familiar to her. "Baby goat."
"How many colors are in a rainbow?" Elizabeth asked.
"Depends who's drawing it," Steve said, looking at Angie knowingly causing her to collapse in a fit of giggles.
"Our final question," Elizabeth said. "Which state was the 50th state to join the United States?"
Abandoning their written answers all the contestants said "Hawaii!" in unison.
Elizabeth collected the answer sheets and after looking them over announced, "It's a tie! You all got every question right. Great team work!"
"Yay!" Angie cheered, running to high-five DJ. "We have the smartest people in our family!"
"This is so fun, Grandma," DJ said, "You're the best quiz master ever."
"Agreed," Joseph added, grinning at his wife. "Although I'm a little biased."
"I have an idea," DJ said. "We should arrange a game for everybody to play next time we have a barbecue. We can have lots of teams!"
"Yes!" Angie clapped her hands excitedly. "Can you help us write the questions, Grandma?"
"I'd love to," Elizabeth replied.
Catherine looked at Steve and smiled. "I think we may have created a monster."
