Taylor walked out to the parking lot and caught Josh right before he was about to leave. He shoved him to the side and slammed his truck door.
Josh stumbled. "What the hell is your problem, Winchester?"
Taylor pulled the pill from his pocket and turned his hand over. "This."
Josh scoffed. "That is none of your business."
"It is when you sell to Hailey. You told her it was caffeine. This is yours, isn't it?" Taylor demanded.
"And?" Josh asked, starting to open his door again.
Taylor blocked him. "And, dumbass, you aren't stupid enough for this shit. You easily have over 100 lbs. on her. You could have killed her."
Josh leaned against his truck. "She's a big girl. She doesn't need you running around behind her."
"She didn't know it was Adderall. Not only are you on the verge of messing up her life, aren't you wanting to play in college?" Taylor asked.
Josh furrowed his eyebrows.
"As soon as scouts find out that you are selling drugs, you can kiss any scholarship or team placement goodbye." Taylor warned.
Josh shifted uncomfortably.
"How many people did you sell to?" Taylor asked.
"Three. The other two knew though." Josh admitted.
"If it is a money thing, man up and let someone know. Take your own damn medication because you make some dumb choices when you don't. I should turn you in for what you did to her." Taylor ran his hand through his hair. "You have scouts looking at you. Next year is your last year. Are you really going to ruin all of that over something like this?"
"Look, this was the first time I did this. I don't appreciate you flying out here and slamming doors." He stood up straight to show Taylor the size difference between them.
Taylor shrugged. "I really wanted to knock you out but I'm showing restraint." He crossed his arms over his chest, not backing down. "You will talk to the coach about your issues. You will never sell your medication again. Got it?"
Josh felt a pain in his head but agreed.
Taylor pressed the heel of his hand against his eye. He felt like he had a brain freeze. Compulsion was easier for Kate.
Josh got into his truck and drove away, glad that Taylor wasn't turning him in.
The head coach cleared his throat. "Is that something that we need to talk about?"
Taylor turned around. "No, sir." He looked down at the ground. "Trying to prevent someone from making a stupid decision."
The coach nodded slowly. "If it becomes a problem, you will come to me instead of sorting it out amongst yourselves."
"Yes, sir." Taylor said.
The coach appreciated that Taylor was being a good teammate. He just didn't want punches to be thrown.
Taylor looked toward the school. "I should go get my sister."
The coach waved him off and walked off toward his office.
Taylor found Kate and Hailey in the art room. Hailey was still upset but not actively crying.
Kate nudged Hailey to alert her that Taylor was back. She gave Taylor a worried look.
Taylor held his arms open for Hailey and looked at Kate. "We just talked."
Hailey broke down slightly. "I'm so stupid."
"No you aren't." Taylor said.
Kate smirked. "If you are, then Taylor is. He had a similar run in with that stuff."
Taylor blushed furiously. He shot Kate a glare and bit the inside of his cheek. "That is a long story."
Hailey stepped back and looked up at him. "Did you buy it?"
"No. I was pretty angry over what happened with my mom and brother. I went to a party and kind of just took what they handed me." Taylor said.
Hailey's eyes were wide. "What?"
Taylor scratched the back of his head. "Not my proudest moment."
Hailey felt a little better since she wasn't the only one that had messed up. "My parents are going to kill me." Her breath hitched. "What if they take cheer away from me? What if I lose the clubs?"
Taylor thought for a moment. "From my experience, parents tend to be less angry if you own up to a mistake and show that you have been thinking about how to fix it. Kate, grab some paper."
Kate and Taylor helped Hailey work through the clubs and activities she was trying to juggle. Kate volunteered to help with any and all decorations and art related things. Taylor promised to help Hailey with the classes she didn't have a good footing in. The list was organized and gave Hailey a way to remain in her activities without being overwhelmed.
Hailey just wanted to cover her bases so that she could get into a good college. What she didn't think about was how hard it was to just be 14.
Taylor hugged her again and kissed the top of her head.
Hailey checked her phone and sighed. "My dad is here." She suddenly looked up at Taylor. "Can you help me explain this to him?"
Taylor flinched. "Uh, I… well…"
Kate hid her grin. "Yeah, Taylor. You noticed what was going on. Who better to tell him?"
Taylor pushed into her head, sending her a buzzing sound that filled her ears.
Hailey took his hand and pulled him down the hallway. Her dad would be pissed at her but might listen to Taylor.
Kate skipped along behind them. Maybe she was being nosey, but she could feign support.
Hailey had a death grip on Taylor's hand and gave her dad a pitiful look when he stepped out of the vehicle. "Hi, dad."
He furrowed his eyebrows. "Is everything okay?"
Hailey pushed Taylor in front of her slightly.
Taylor stammered. "Uh…"
Kate, ever so helpful, spoke up. "Taylor noticed something going on and helped Hailey fix it."
Her dad leaned back against the car. "What happened?"
Hailey squeaked and quickly explained everything in one breath.
"You bought drugs?!"
Taylor cringed. "She didn't know what they were. The guy admitted that he lied."
"I just thought it was caffeine like coffee. I know that was dumb. I didn't know what it was though." Hailey said.
He snapped his fingers and pointed to the car for her to get into the backseat. He turned back to Taylor and motioned for him to continue.
Taylor was out of his element. "She was sleepy and went to take one of them. I saw the pill and asked her about it. I confronted the guy. He is an excellent player and is having money issues. I told him to talk to the coach instead of being an idiot. Uh, she is part of all of these activities because it will look good on a college application. She can't be part of the leadership if she doesn't take an active part this year. Here is a list of her commitments. My sister and I have helped her delegate the tasks. I'll help with academic stuff. Kate will help with all of the art." He pointed to a box. "This is a list of upcoming tasks that she can have other members help with."
Her dad looked at the paper and took a deep breath. "Thank you for stopping her."
Taylor stepped back. "Uh, you're welcome."
Her dad formed a thin line with his lips and flared her nose. He motioned to Karen's car. "You two had better head on home."
Taylor gave Hailey an awkward wave and stepped away from the car.
Kate put a hand on his shoulder. "You will have to work on your negotiation skills."
Taylor let out a huge breath. "I'm not crazy like you. I don't laugh in the face of authority."
"Well, I didn't say laugh. You just need more confidence." Kate said.
"Yeah, and then I'd look like some punk trying to tell him what to do." Taylor said.
Kate shrugged. "So, what happened with Josh?"
Taylor bit his lip. "I compelled him."
Kate raised both eyebrows. "That is it?"
"I didn't punch him. I wanted to but that would get me into hot water, and I couldn't give you that satisfaction." Taylor said.
Kate opened the car door. "You have to tell dad."
Taylor sighed. "I figured I'd talk to Dean first."
Karen smiled. "Are you hungry?"
The kids traded looks.
Taylor sat down and closed his door. "Yes, ma'am."
"We can order food." Karen said. "The oven is broken."
"We should get a new one." Kate said.
"That one has been around since long before I left and came back." Karen said. "Bobby might faint at the word new but it is time."
Taylor let Kate and Karen go into the diner to order food. He stayed outside and called Dean. He grimaced when he answered the phone. "Hey, uh, can I talk to you?" Dean had been walking along a trail with John. He paused. "Go for it."
"I mean, brother to brother." Taylor said.
Dean waved John on. "What did you do?"
Taylor groaned but explained the situation.
Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "You should have knocked him out."
Taylor furrowed his brows. "I thought that that may cause more issues. He isn't a bad person. I didn't want to ruin his future."
Dean agreed with the way that Taylor handled the situation. "Are you going to take after Sam and go to law school?"
Taylor rested his head on the dashboard. "No. Kate is more suited for that."
Dean snorted. "So why do you act like you are in for it?"
Taylor shifted and pressed his back against the back of the seat. "I could have turned him in. I used an ability on him."
"I'll tell dad." Dean said.
"No, wait. You'll make it sound worse than it is." Taylor said.
Dean laughed. "You're fine, kid. He might give you a lecture on how to do things differently, but I don't see him being angry about it. What did you do with the pill?"
"I gave it back to him." Taylor said.
Dean picked up his pace to catch up with John. "How do I know you didn't take it?"
John stopped walking and spun around.
Dean smirked. "Adderall is just as much of a drug as any of the other stuff."
John raised an eyebrow. "Is that Taylor?"
Taylor blanched. "Yes, but Dean is joking!"
Dean winked. "I'll let him tell you about it."
John took the phone and listened to Taylor explain everything again. He was silent for a moment. "Next time let an adult know. If that compulsion doesn't hold, he may go back out and make the same mistake."
"Yes, sir." Taylor said. "I thought I'd see what kind of money trouble he had. I don't want him to lose a college career before he even starts."
"Let Hailey's dad do the parenting. He doesn't need you to take up for her." John said.
"Dad, she begged me, and I couldn't tell her no." Taylor said.
"That is the trouble with women, son. Learn your lesson now or you're going to wind up in a bind one day." John said.
Dean pulled the phone closer to him. "Taylor, if you make a joke about my history with women, I will end you."
Taylor scoffed. "Well, I guess the conversation is over."
John chuckled. "Check back in before you go to bed. We are almost to our destination."
"Be careful. None of us will ever hear the end of it if you get hurt." Taylor said.
Dean took his phone back and put it in his pocket. "I would have punched the guy."
John nodded. He probably would have too, but Taylor showed restraint. "That girl is going to get him in all kinds of trouble."
Dean smirked. "If that one doesn't, the shorter curly haired one will."
(John and Dean)
They made it into a wooded area with tents strewn around. Something had attacked the campers. There was no sign of human or monster life. The sun was setting so they quickly looked through the campsite and felt reasonably sure that the vampires had been there.
They'd return in the morning to search the area for a cabin. Vampires could go out into the sun, but it wasn't a comfortable thing for them. They didn't burst into flames like so many books claimed but the sun gave John and Dean a slight advantage over facing the vampires at night.
At the motel, Dean kicked his boots off and pulled his jacket off. "So, what are you thinking about files?"
John patted his duffle. "I brought both of them."
Dean chuckled. "You didn't trust them not to look?"
"I just didn't leave these out to tempt them." John said. Both files had sticky notes sticking out from different pages. "Kate's has most of what I expected to find. There is documentation from when she got sick. The doctor continued to monitor her. Somehow, this hospital obtained chart notes from a few other times that she was seen in the ER or by a doctor."
"Maybe they use the same system." Dean said.
John opened the file. "This one has one of her aliases and a different birthdate. They would not have known that she was the same person."
"So did they have someone looking for DNA like on those crime shows?" Dean looked at the notes.
"I don't know yet." John said. He pulled out another piece of paper. "This is part of the list created from the files we stole. Charlie has been weeding through her share of them. The doctor had typical patients, but he also had files with this," He tapped the lower left corner of one of Kate's pages, "numbering system."
"So, he could keep track of them." Dean said.
"I have looked through every single file for those numbers, although I haven't read every file. Not a single one is dated before Kate's. Some of the patients were older than her but this number on her page, 0001AT1 makes me think she was the first one. She is going to take that and feel responsible for all of the others. If the doctor was high on demon power and wanted to keep healing kids, he could have made that deal. As far as I can find, four months after Kate was healed, other files started to be numbered like this." John explained.
Dean's heart broke. She would absolutely take that as a sign that it was all her fault. "So, you haven't told her yet."
"No. She shoved her bloody hand into a cage on a whim. What do you think she is going to do if she thinks that this doctor experimented on other kids because of what happened to her?" John sighed. "There are weird things, you've read a few of these. It looks like he healed a few more kids and then got curious. Charlie is organizing the information to find a pattern." He rubbed his temples. "Some of these kids died. They looked healthy or just had minor problems. Then, they died from unknown causes."
Dean didn't want Kate to know either, but she'd find out one day. "How do we tell her that?"
"I don't know yet. She needs to understand that she is a victim." John said.
"Victim or not, she is going to feel the need to fix it. What about Taylor?" Dean asked.
John put Kate's file away. "Since Kyle put this together, it is completely different. I also don't think he was alone in putting it together."
"Do you think an adult or someone like Aphrim helped?" Dean asked.
"I didn't get a chance to ask him, and he left no way to contact him." John said. "Bill knew about Taylor and tried to do what was right but Craig hid him away. He left a letter, but I can't read all of it because Craig tried to destroy it." He felt a lump growing in his throat. If he had been a better hunting partner, Taylor would have been able to meet Bill. "Some of these are notes that Kyle made when he was a teenager. He found marks on Taylor when he was a newborn. He didn't say what kind of marks, but they were gone soon after. He overheard Misty and Craig talking about Taylor and Craig claimed that he was evil." He looked away from the file and gritted his teeth. "Bastard convinced her to let Taylor suffocate and claimed that if he was alive the next morning, he was right."
Dean clinched his fist. Maybe he'd let Kate summon Crowley so that he could pull Craig from hell just long enough for Dean to kill him again.
"Pamela assisted with part of this." John said. "There is a string of doctors' visits and injuries. Child protective services did a shit job. Somewhere in there, when he was younger, he stopped healing. It looks like they gave him something that stopped it. Pamela thinks that Taylor was still taking whatever it was when he started staying at Bobby's house. His abilities were always there but inactive. When he was at Bobby's he wasn't taking it. Maybe being around Kate brought on that first ability but Craig going after him as a shapeshifter might have been because he started healing suddenly by not taking whatever it was."
"Could it have been a pendant?" Dean asked.
"We can't search the house for anything because it has been demolished. Kate could read him to see if he remembers anything, but she is on restrictions. I asked Pamela if she could help, and she is doing her own research." He wearily removed his shoes and leaned forward to rest his head in his hands. "Missouri might be able to help too."
"But Kate is the strongest and has more control." Dean said.
"Except when she doesn't." John said.
"So, she is plan C." Dean added
"Taylor doesn't talk about his childhood. I do not know what all he remembers." John vaguely motioned to the file. "Kyle was 15. He left home at 18. He only saw bits and pieces of 3 years. If things were as bad as I think they were, will he be able to handle opening up those old wounds?"
Dean understood John's dilemma. The kids had a right to know what had been done to them but either one could spiral out of control. He wanted to spiral out of control. He wanted to burn the world down, but he had to remain calm. "I can handle breaking the news to Kate."
"She is going to take it out on herself." John said.
Dean nodded. "I'll soften the blow and put her in a strait jacket if I need to."
"We will do this as a family. These files scratched the surface. I can't imagine what horrors went on that have not been documented."
Dean bounced his leg and chewed the inside of his cheek. "Everybody gets a strait jacket."
(Caleb's crew)
Andy got dressed for school. He pulled a flannel over his t-shirt and added a pair of boots to his outfit. He smoothed his hair to the side, but it looked weird. He got frustrated and asked Caleb to help him.
Caleb knew Andy was trying to copy his hairstyle, so he did the same thing he always did. "There you go."
Andy smiled. "I'm sad I can't wear a hat at school."
"Then no one would see your hair. You can wear one outside of school." Caleb said.
Andy let Riot out to use the bathroom and ate his breakfast. He was already sick of school, and it wasn't even Halloween yet. "Are we gonna go to Taylor's game?"
"We should be able to." Caleb said. "I have a big job at work, but I think we will be done by then."
"I wish I could help you." Andy said.
"Maybe when you don't have school you can assist." Caleb said. His boss encouraged it as long as the job wasn't dangerous. "Did you study your spelling words?"
Andy slowly chewed his cereal.
"I'll take that as a no. Go get them and we can go over them before school."
April leaned over the back of Caleb's chair to put her arms around him. "I can call you during my appointment." She had another baby appointment and was hoping they'd do another scan. They could always have Kate check on Lauren, but the ultrasound let her see Lauren's sweet face.
Caleb turned around and gently pulled April to the side. He rested his hands on her stomach and smiled when Lauren kicked. "Is she about to run out of room?"
April rubbed her lower back. "I'm going to be huge by January." at 27 weeks she already felt huge. Her small frame was not meant to carry big babies.
"We could paint your belly like a pumpkin for Halloween." Caleb said with a grin.
April huffed. "You will do no such thing."
Andy returned with his spelling list and sat down. "Dad can paint his too."
April laughed and patted Caleb's stomach. "Now that we can do."
Caleb moved Andy's list and shook his head. "Just for that I'm going to make you go through these twice."
Andy groaned. He hated spelling tests.
Caleb took time to go through each of the words and was pleased that Andy got most of them right. He had him redo the ones he missed and gave him hints about how to remember the tricky ones. "This test should be a piece of cake."
Andy didn't know about that.
April got Ian dressed. Karen had offered to watch him since April was uncomfortable with him going to daycare since it was possible that a demon had been there. She didn't want to isolate him, but she worried. She was still working at Elsie's store sometimes and enjoyed the break from the kids.
(Bobby's house)
Taylor was almost sick to his stomach. He had not gotten a text from Hailey but that was about what he was expecting. He wanted to get to school to see if she was okay. He didn't know why he was worried. Her dad was a nice person. He probably wasn't even as strict as John was.
Kate felt for Taylor. He was such a kind soul and really liked Hailey. "She's fine."
Taylor stopped brushing his teeth. "I know. I just want to make sure she is fine."
"You were never that concerned for me." Kate teased.
"Bull. I'm always concerned for you." Taylor said.
Kate shrugged. "I'm just saying don't be so worried."
Taylor looked in the mirror. He checked the time on his watch and groaned. "Do you think they'll be back by tonight?"
"Dad said he should be. I am not making assumptions because that always bites me in the butt." Kate said. She got his backpack from his bed and handed it to him. "Want me to scry?"
Taylor shook his head. "I'm not asking you to do anything that dad wouldn't like." He pulled his phone out of his pocket and made an odd face. "Hi, dad."
Kate bounced on her toes. "He felt it. He knew." She hissed.
Taylor playfully shoved her away. "Yes. We are ready and Karen is going to take us. Will you be back for the game?" He held his palm out to stop Kate from approaching. He jerked his hand away when she lightly bit him. "Yes, dad. I'm paying attention." He glared at Kate and went downstairs.
Kate grabbed her lunch from the kitchen and stopped by Bobby's office. "I was going to scry on dad, and he suddenly called Taylor. He has freaking abilities."
Bobby sipped his coffee. "I'd say that was just good timing."
"Uh huh. Just keep hiding the truth from us." Kate said, jokingly.
Bobby nodded his head toward the door. "Go to school before you get yourself worked up."
Kate backed her way to the door but stopped to poke her head back through the doorway. "Just so you know I can go to school and get myself worked up at the same time."
Bobby snorted and shook his head as Kate left. She would never let her theory go, no matter what happened.
Taylor didn't see Hailey during his first class or in the hallway. He texted her to make sure everything was okay. The reply helped him relax. Her mom had taken her to a doctor to make sure that the medication didn't harm her in any way. He felt a flash of anger thinking about how she could have been harmed. He needed to have Kate compel Josh so that it stuck. He didn't want to rely on his own ability and hope for the best.
Kate was interested in Hailey as well. If nothing, she didn't want Taylor to be sad. She got lost in a daydream that slowly turned deeper. She jumped when the teacher loudly called her name. She had a good connection with Hannah and could hear her repeating something over and over in her head. "Sorry, the answer is C."
The teacher studied Kate's face for a moment but nodded. "Correct."
Kate shot Hannah a grateful look. Hannah couldn't read her mind but knew that Kate could read hers. If Kate was a superhero, Hannah was her sidekick. She liked being able to tell a 'civilian' about what was going on. Ellie was sweet but clueless. Hannah listened to her stories and supported her, although she did not want to talk about anything freak related. That threat from her dad was working and Kate was a little amused.
The teacher stopped Kate before she went to her next class. "How are you feeling? Does your head hurt? Do you get headaches?"
Kate looked confused. "I am okay. I get headaches sometimes, but my head is fine."
The teacher gave her a small smile and sent her on her way.
(John and Dean)
After they returned to the campsite, they followed a trail down to a lakeside house. It was small but looked tidy. Typically, vamps squatted in abandoned areas. They didn't keep the grass cut neatly. John didn't see any movement outside of the house or any movement through the windows. That was expected as vamps usually slept during the day.
Dean saw fresh tire tracks and pointed them out. The car in the driveway had been recently parked. Had the vampires attacked the family that morning?
On the off chance that there were no vampires, John knocked on the front door.
A man answered. He looked incredibly tired. "How can I help you?"
John squinted his eyes. "We heard there were some strange things going on around here. We were wondering if you had seen anything."
The man's face paled.
John didn't see another row of vamp teeth, so the man was likely human. He tilted his head slightly and the man nodded.
The man carefully held up 4 fingers to tell John that there were four humans in the house. He held up 6 to warn John of something else. Dean saw a small face looking through a window and held his hands up and pointed to his gums. If there were vamps in the house, the kid had probably seen one up close. He put a finger to his mouth and made a motion to ask if the window could be opened. It opened slightly but he held a hand up to stop the child. He went back around to John and used hand signals to let him know that he was going to get kids out through the window.
John cleared his throat loudly to attract attention to the front door. He gave the man a thumbs up and continued the conversation in a loud tone.
Dean hurried back around and peaked through the window. The door was closed, and he could see two little kids. He whispered through the cracked window to ask if there was anyone or anything else in the room. He gradually raised the window until both kids could squeeze through it. He helped a little boy out and reminded him to be quiet. He pulled a girl out and checked her over, knowing that kids could be vamps too. He carried the girl and held the boy's hand. He was thankful that the family car was unlocked. He got both of them into the car and dialed Bobby's number. "Hey, Bobby. I've got two kids who need someone to talk to while we clean up their house."
Bobby didn't need further explanation. He knew the drill.
Dean handed the phone to the boy. "You stay here. Lock the doors. Do not let anyone into the car or get out of the car unless my friend tells you to."
The boy nodded and held onto his sister.
Bobby had Karen help him talk to the kids. They were quiet at first but responded well to Karen's voice. If things started to go down, Bobby could ask questions and help them remain safe.
Movement was heard in the house, so John had the man step outside. He whispered, "Who else is still inside."
"Wife." The man stated.
"What else is in there?" John asked.
The man's face went blank, and he shook his head. He made a motion toward his mouth but didn't have the word they needed.
John understood. He motioned for Dean to follow him and entered the house. There was a body by the door, and it had signs of illness. The fang teeth were out so he severed the head, so it didn't wake up.
A chilling scream caused Dean to hunch his back and whirl around. It was coming from the basement. He locked eyes with John and swore under his breath.
That was a freak scream, clear as day. Judging by the vamp by the door, it was a good thing that the head was several feet from the body. He could have been about to turn.
They found a woman in a room with a vamp. She was alive but the vamp had its fangs dug into her wrist. John got the vamp off of her and Dean got her outside. John cornered the vamp. "How many of them are in the basement?"
The vamp stared at him.
"If those things get out, everybody is going to suffer. How many are there?" John demanded.
The vampire was probably in his 20s when he died. "One? Two? I don't know anymore."
"Did one of you get bit and wake up one of those things?" John asked.
The vampire told John that they were out hunting and got attacked. One of them got brutally attacked and the others fled. Once they got to a safe place, they saw that another had a large bite wound. They left that area for another state. The first vampire started to get sick, so they found a vet to clean and stitch the wound. That was why they were at the lake house.
John noticed the vampire was shaky. "You got bit, didn't you?"
The vampire shook his head. "Scratched but just a small scratch." The infection had already spread up his arm, across his chest and back and was making its way up his neck.
"You will turn into one of them." John said.
The vamp looked horrified.
"What happened to the one by the door?" Dean asked, returning from making sure the family was safe. He didn't put the parents into the car with the kids just in case they turned.
"He... he got sick." The vampire said.
"When?" Dean asked.
"A few days ago. He didn't turn into one of those things." The vamp said. His head twitched and he growled involuntarily.
"Did you see the others turn?" John asked. "It starts off like this. They get bit or scratched. They get sick and then they turn."
The vampire dropped to his knees. "End it before it ends me."
John was a tad surprised.
The vampire hung his head. "It is painful. My brother turned. He was in agony."
That was a bit of news for the Winchesters. John took pity on the young vampire and made it quick, letting his head drop beside his body.
Dean heard another scream and shivered.
"The homeowner said there were six. That is two down." John said.
"We need Cas." Dean said. He was not about to go into that basement without knowing what was down there.
During a search of the house, John found another body that had not turned. He brought it into the main room and placed it next to the first one.
Cas showed up. He was unnerved by the screams and got a quick update from Dean. "Should I take them to the facility."
"I don't know what else we would do." Dean said.
Cas nodded. There was a struggle and Cas barely managed to get them out of there. He didn't know what one of them could do to him, but he didn't want to face one in hand-to-hand combat. He could zap them to the facility in a millisecond. Being faster than them was likely the only reason he could overpower them.
The remaining vampire was still downstairs. He had been restrained by Cas and was barely holding on.
John stepped into the basement before Dean. He felt his stomach turn. Where did all of the blood come from?
Dean grimaced and swallowed. "What the hell?"
John crouched in front of the vampire. "What happened here?"
The vampire explained that they had fallen ill. The first vamp to turn had done so suddenly and the second was able to get him to the basement before he woke up from the change. He was not able to get back up the steps before he was bitten. Another vampire was bitten while trying to save the second one.
John told him what they knew about the freaks and their effects on vampires. "You are about to turn?"
The vampire nodded. "You are hunters."
"We are. We tracked you to this house." John said.
The vampire had no fight in him. "We should be hunting you. Now there is something worse."
John agreed with the something worse.
The vampire weakly nodded to a chair on the opposite wall. A camera sat on the seat.
"You videoed this?" John asked.
"The doctor suggested it. He couldn't help." The vampire said.
John took the camera and placed it in his bag. "Do you want me to make this quick."
The vampire flexed his fists. He could feel the talons making their way through the tips of his fingers.
John noticed a shift in the vampire's gaze and quickly brought his knife down across the side of his neck. He nodded to Castiel. "Can you remove the bodies too? We can study them."
Dean sat down on the steps. "They fed on the woman. Do they spread stuff before they die?"
John didn't have the answer to that. "We need to talk to them."
The boy got the okay from Bobby to unlock the car door and jumped into his dad's arms. He cried openly and hid his face.
John spoke to the mother. "Did they only feed on you?"
She was in shock but nodded.
John checked her wounds. They were inflamed but looked like normal vamp marks. "I'm sure you know that they changed. We don't know if they spread the sickness to you."
She turned her back to John and cried into her hands.
"This is Cas. He is going to take you somewhere safe." Dean said. "He has a cool trick where you close your eyes, and you are suddenly in the new place."
John pulled both parents to the side and talked to them. "We will clean this up. You will be taken to a safe place so that we can monitor your health. If you have symptoms, we can remove you before you turn."
With the family gone, Dean stepped back into the house. They usually didn't stick around to clean up crime scenes, but they didn't want an outside cleaner or member of the family to turn because the blood infected them. They worked as quickly as possible and disposed of the towels by setting them on fire.
"Are we going to the facility?" Dean asked.
"No. Taylor has a game tonight." John said. "With everything that is about to hit the fan, we need to be there, not here."
Dean looked shocked. "The family won't be up to answering questions today anyway."
"How many more nests are going to turn?" John asked rhetorically. "Is it just vampires?"
"I'll place calls to all of my werewolf and ghoul buddies to ask." Dean quipped.
John smacked his head. "Smart ass."
(Later, before the game)
Kate ran up the steps to claim a good seat. She waited until Karen and Bobby showed up before abandoning her post. She found Taylor and asked about Hailey, but he told her she hadn't been at school due to the appointment. That was lame.
Caleb was able to finish his job for the day and bring his little family to the game.
April had gotten new pictures of Lauren and the doctor assured both of them that she was a very healthy baby.
John and Dean made it back and freshened up before driving over to the school.
Taylor saw his family and waved. He asked Dean to open his car because Taylor had left his gloves in the backseat. He heard Hailey's voice and stumbled when she jumped into his arms from a sprint.
Hailey kissed him for a moment and hopped down. "Thank you! My dad is letting me keep my activities. He said your list was okay as long as I didn't go back to taking on too much." She ran off to change into her uniform before she ran out of time.
Dean poured water into his hand and splashed Taylor in the face.
Taylor sputtered. "What was that for?"
Dean smirked. "You looked like you needed it. Boy, it won't matter if you saved her life if her dad sees you kissing her like that."
Taylor wiped his face and scoffed. "I didn't... that wasn't.. I mean.."
It was clear to Dean that the kiss was just an innocent kiss, but it was more than a peck. If Taylor was anything like him at 14, his brain and left the building and he would do absolutely anything she asked of him. He clapped Taylor on the back and turned him around. "You had better focus. She's going to be watching your every move."
Taylor whimpered. "Dean, dude."
Dean grinned. "Oh, this is just the beginning."
Taylor knew Dean was just teasing him, but his cheeks were pink anyway. He stopped midstride and spun around. "At least she's not a reaper." He caught the water bottle before it hit him in the face.
Dean narrowed his eyes. "Your ass is grass."
Taylor threw the water bottle back to him. "You started it."
Dean would be the one ending it. It was a known rule that the oldest got to pick on the youngest. When the younger ones started getting smart and throwing it back at him, he had to put them in their place. Sam wasn't there to help him out, so he sat down next to Caleb. "I need to form an alliance."
Caleb put Ian on one of his legs. "What for?"
"Kate, we know, has been a pain in the ass for a long time. Taylor used to be meek and mild. He is now just as bad." Dean said.
Caleb nodded in understanding. "I'm down for whatever you have in mind."
Andy overheard them and scooted over to join the quiet conversation. "I'm a kid but I'll be on your side."
Dean fist bumped him. "A spy. Good."
Hailey ran over to the sidelines and jumped so that her feet were on the bottom of the stands and her arms were over the railing. "Kate."
Kate grinned and walked over.
"Thank you for helping me. You are amazing." Hailey said. She gave Kate a high-five and jumped back down.
Kate tiptoed and found Hannah, waving her over.
Dean watched her and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Great. She has an in with the cheerleaders and her crime partner is here."
Caleb chuckled. "Me and Andy have your back."
Bobby leaned back and twisted slightly. "I'm usually all for knocking you two down a peg or two but I'll take pity on you."
Dean looked at John who he knew was listening. "Well?"
John glanced at him. "I might be of assistance once, and only once."
Dean settled into his seat and leaned back, propping his feet on Ian's bag.
Karen softly nudged Bobby's side. "They are going to eat him alive, aren't they?"
Bobby smiled. "Oh, absolutely."
