Author's note: I had a third surgery yesterday (Sept 30th) which was also unplanned. I have an infection eating up my leg but I'm alive and kicking (Maybe not kicking). You can look up 'miserable malalignment syndrome' if you want a better understanding of what is going on with my legs. I'm settling in with school. (I'm getting my bachelor's degree in exercise science before applying for an OT, occupational therapy, Master's program.) I'm also a teacher's aide for the human anatomy and physiology professor at my college. This means I run a certain lab and am in charge of everything needed for that lab. (I'm not looking forward to cadaver stuff). Add single parenting to all of that. I've said I won't abandon the story and will stick by that. I'll iron out a good schedule and shouldn't go a month without posting again. Anyway, I had some questions about my leg and my major. I hope that answered some of those.

(November 20th)

Kate had given Sam and Jess at least a few days before she started asking Jess questions. She was excited for Caleb and April but planning with Jess was more fun. She had a closer relationship with Jess and thought she could sway her to get a bit fancier than Bobby's house for a venue. They would wait a few years to get married, but it wouldn't hurt to start planning ahead of time.

Jess didn't want a huge wedding like her mom would have wanted her to have. She just wanted Sam's family to attend. However, she agreed with Kate and thought that they could do something different in terms of where to have the wedding. That was forever away so she steered Kate toward ideas for gifts that Sam would like. Christmas would be arriving soon, and Sam would have a birthday in May. She didn't tell Kate that they had thought about moving to South Dakota during the summer. Sam wasn't sure if the move would work out or if the internship was set in stone.

Taylor got details about the school trip from Hailey. He was still sad that he didn't get to go but the storm had passed. He wouldn't be slamming any more doors. Football was over for the year, so he felt a little out of sorts. His team did well and had a few trophies that the school displayed in a glass case in the cafeteria. He wasn't sure if he needed to pick up another sport to fill his time or if that would put more stress on him. If he was the star player of every team, that would raise too many questions. He didn't think he could fake being bad at the sport though. Football had given him a high that he didn't realize was there until it went away. He needed a new high.

(The night of the 20th)

A hunter had been tracking a pack of werewolves for a few months. They were smart and evaded him at every turn. The pack was small and had moved through two states.

A young couple tucked their new baby into his car seat and loaded him into the car. The mom was still achy from the delivery but overjoyed to have her little boy right in front of her. The first week at home was blissful, although the baby got upset around 8 o'clock each night. A short drive always calmed him down and allowed them to sleep peacefully. The full moon was so bright that night. They could almost drive without headlights.

The husband watched his wife in the rearview mirror. She was smiling at their son and talking softly to him. He turned onto another road before he made the loop back around to their house. That was their usual route. Something darted from the shadows and caused him to hit the brakes. The car lurched and his wife gasped from the backseat. He grimaced, expecting the baby to start crying but let out a sigh of relief as the infant remained quiet. As he started to drive again, they heard a loud thunk on top of the car. He stopped the car and got out, urging his wife to stay inside where it was safe. He didn't see anything at first. There was a dent on the roof of the car so something had hit it but he didn't know what it was. His investigation was cut short as the rear door was opened from the opposite side. He ran around and struggled to get the man's hands off of his wife, but he was quickly knocked back and hit his head on the ground. He was groggy and couldn't see straight. He tried to fight again but it all happened so fast. He heard gunshots and slumped to the ground as the head injury pulled him into a deep sleep.

The hunter, Ryan, cursed himself. He had not been fast enough. The woman was gone but he took out three wolves. The one that got away was limping, but he couldn't save the young woman. He transported the man and baby to the hospital right away. The man was wounded but he couldn't tell if the injuries were from a bite or from getting smacked around. The infant was unharmed. He was upset at first but quickly fell back to sleep in his car seat as Ryan drove to the hospital.

(Sam and Jess)

Sam stretched and grabbed his phone. It was only 8:30 so he hadn't planned to go to bed but he was tired. He yawned and held the phone to his ear. "Hello?"

A strained voice answered. "You're John's boy, right?"

Sam raised both eyebrows before furrowing them. "Yes."

"The one that takes kids?" The hunter asked.

Sam rubbed his face. "Uh, we do if they just need a place to stay for a few days."

The hunter's voice was garbled as other voices filled the room. He got clearer and took a deep breath. "Uh, I was on a hunt. These young people got attacked by wolves and the wife is gone. The husband is real beat up. I don't know if he's going to turn yet."

Sam sat up straight. "So, you want us to look after the kids?"

The hunter introduced himself as Ryan, having been too out of it to do that right away. "I don't know if they have family. The baby just needs somewhere safe until this man wakes up."

"How old is it?" Sam asked.

"He's a tiny thing. I don't think he's a month yet." Ryan said.

Sam's heart broke. "Hold on, let me ask Jess." He held the phone to his chest and found Jess sitting on their bed. "Hey, um, there's a baby..."

Jess snapped her head up. She cut him off. "Yes."

Sam tilted his head. "You haven't even let me finish my sentence."

Jess shrugged. "Doesn't matter. I said yes."

Sam took a deep breath. He put the phone back to his ear. "We can take him. Just tell me when and where."

Jess quickly got dressed and looked through the kid stuff they had. They didn't really have anything for a baby.

Sam was nervous. He quickly called Brady and asked what they'd need for a baby and if his sister had anything they could use for a few days. Within a half hour, Brody had dropped off a box with things that they'd need. Sam eyed the can of formula and read it carefully. They'd figure it out. Another hour slipped by before a firm knock alerted him that Ryan had arrived.

Jess immediately took the car seat and sucked in a breath of air. Her eyes got watery as she pulled the tiny baby from his car seat. "I thought..."

Sam cringed. "I forgot to say he's pretty young."

Jess swallowed and left them in the living room to chat. She knew how to make a bottle and did that first, just in case he woke up and was hungry. She couldn't take her eyes off of his small face. He looked so peaceful. Her stomach twisted. He didn't know what had happened. He was too small.

Ryan didn't know much about the baby or the man. He just got him to a safe place until his father woke up. Hopefully, he'd wake up human.

Sam felt an immense weight as Ryan drove away. He found Jess in the kitchen, gently swaying as she held the baby. "Is he okay?"

Jess traced his face. "As far as I can tell."

Sam told her to go to their room. "I'll get everything set up. Who knows how long he will sleep."

Jess didn't want to go to sleep. She didn't want to put the precious baby down. He had been through so much and had no idea. "What is his name?"

Sam looked through the bag that Ryan had found in the car. He found a folded blanket with the name Jacob on it. "I guess Jacob."

Jess sat against the head of their bed and leaned back slightly. She saw Milo looking quite confused and allowed him to jump up beside her.

Milo sniffed the weird new human and decided that he was not a threat. He curled up next to Jess and rested his chin on her leg.

Sam gave her a small smile. "Things will be okay. Ryan didn't think they infected the dad. He should wake up soon."

Jess just let out a slow breath. "So, until then, we will just take care of Jacob."

Sam hoped that it was only a day or two. He was happy to help but Jess would be torn to pieces if she got attached to him. He pinched the bridge of his nose. Was this something he needed to call John about? Surely, he needed to touch base with him. He didn't need his permission, but a text message was probably expected.

Jacob started to squirm slightly and slowly blinked his eyes.

Jess was prepared before the little guy got upset. She fed him and gently burped him before putting him onto the bed for a quick diaper change. She took a pacifier from Sam and got him settled back down to sleep.

Sam raised both eyebrows. "That was easy."

Jess jabbed him in the side. "Don't jinx it."

Sam got up to move a basket closer to the side of the bed. They didn't have a baby bed so a basket would have to do. He put a blanket in it and waited for Jess to relinquish the baby. "We should sleep while he does."

Jess gently put Jacob down and sat back on her bed. Sam was right but she just couldn't close her eyes. What if something happened to him? What if he woke up scared?

Sam slid into the bed beside her and put his arm around her shoulders. "He's okay. Sleep."

(The next day)

John got Sam's text message and replied right away but waited for Sam to wake up before he called him. He knew Ryan. He had no doubt that Sam and Jess could handle the baby, but a newborn was no walk in the park. He wanted to make sure they had what they needed before he called Ryan to ask about the man.

Ryan had waited at the hospital overnight. Aside from a head injury, it seemed like the man would be okay.

Kate picked up on the tension as soon as she woke up. "What is wrong?"

John sighed. "Another hunter found a couple that had been attacked by werewolves. The husband is in the hospital. They had a newborn. He is with Sam and Jess until the dad wakes up."

Kate's eyes got big. "The wife?"

John just shook his head slowly.

Kate frowned and slumped into a chair. "Another kid who won't know his mom."

John put a comforting hand on her back. "Things aren't fair. That is why we do what we do."

Kate swallowed around the lump in her throat. "Why is it always the mom?"

John sat back. That was a good question. "I guess, sometimes, the woman seems to be the easier prey." He had often wondered why Mary had been taken. Why wasn't he taken?

Kate got up to hug John. "All the more reason you should let me figure out my full abilities so I can wipe them all out."

John patted her arm. "One day. Not today."

Kate sighed. "When do we leave for our trip?"

John looked at the day. "In a few days. We will go while you're on fall break."

Kate was fine with skipping a few days. She liked school more than the previous year, but she still had better things to do. She snapped her fingers. "Hannah and I have a project to finish. Could she come over today to work on it? We want to get a head start."

John eyed her. "You might be able to go over there."

Kate shook her head. "Her brothers are loud, and her parents won't be home."

"I'll make sure it is okay with Bobby." John said. He tilted his head to tell Kate to go get ready for school. He wanted to talk to Sam. The baby was going to go back home but he wanted to make sure they had what they needed. With the other kids, they had a parent to drop them off and give them information. That wasn't the case this time. They knew nothing about the baby except his name.

(Sam and Jess)

Night one with baby Jacob went well. He woke up a few times, but Jess was quick to sooth him. Sam had class the next morning, but he helped as much as she would let him.

"I'll watch him. You go get a shower." Sam said.

Jess frowned.

Sam gave her a small smile. "Go. I promise he will be okay." He picked Jacob up and cradled him in his arms. His hand nearly covered his entire body. Were all babies that small? He was wearing a newborn sized outfit, so he was probably a normal sized newborn. Maybe Sam's hands were just big. Maybe he hadn't been around a newborn before.

Jess showered quickly. She trusted Sam but Jacob was so small. Her heart broke knowing that he wouldn't have a mom to grow up with. She hoped his dad woke up soon and was okay.

Around noon, the dad did wake up. He was confused and had some memory loss.

Ryan helped piece together what happened and assured him that his son was okay. "I couldn't find any records and I didn't think you'd want him swept away in foster care."

The man's voice was hoarse. "My wife?"

Ryan bowed his head. "I couldn't find any trace of her."

"Call the police." The man, Tony, said as he tried to sit up.

"I did. They are looking for her." Ryan said. "You know this wasn't your typical mugging."

The man thought he was going crazy. He remembered how strong they were and thought he may have seen teeth that were not human.

Ryan looked around them. "I'll explain everything once you get out of here."

Tony wanted to know more about the people that had his son and gave them a call to check on him. The whole situation had to be a bad dream.

(Sioux Falls)

Kate darted to her locker as soon as the final bell rang. She traded out books that she needed for her project and quickly found Hannah. "Come on, Dean is picking us up."

Hannah ran out after Kate. She gave Dean a smirk before she got into the backseat beside Kate.

Dean raised an eyebrow. "You can ride in the trunk if you are going to start causing issues."

Kate scoffed and smacked his arm. "You can't just put kids in your trunk, Dean. That's how you get arrested."

Dean flicked her leg and pulled his arm back over the front seat. "Brat."

Taylor heard Dean's car and reluctantly left Hailey's side. He kissed her on the forehead and told her to have a good rest of her day. There was no one else that he'd rather spend time with.

Dean gave Taylor an odd look as he got into the car. He bit his bottom lip for a second before raising both of his eyebrows.

"What?" Taylor asked.

Dean pulled the sun visor down so that Taylor could look at himself in the mirror.

"What?" Taylor asked again.

Dean pushed his chin so that he'd turn his head.

Taylor's face turned blood red and he quickly used his shirt to scrub at his neck.

Dean just waited for him to calm down. "If you keep rubbing at it like that, you'll look like she did more than kiss your neck."

Taylor groaned. "She didn't... she did but.. she's short."

Dean let a small laugh escape his lips. "On school property?"

Taylor caught sight of Kate's face in the backseat and pressed his head to the dashboard. "Could you not right now?"

Hannah was amused.

Kate leaned over the seat to look at Taylor's neck. "Lip gloss must not come off easily."

Taylor palmed her face to shove her back to the backseat. "Dean, drive."

Dean snorted and turned away from the school. "I'll drop my line of questioning for now, but only for their sakes." He said as he motioned to the backseat.

Hannah smiled. "Oh, you're fine. I'm curious too."

Taylor whipped his head around to glare at her. "Why is she in the car?"

Kate smirked. "She's working on a project with me. She's going to be at our house all afternoon."

Taylor took a deep breath. "Dean, we should hang out."

Dean eyed the girls in the backseat. "I have errands."

Taylor unzipped his backpack. "I'll do my homework in the car."

Once they got to Bobby's house, Kate and Hannah got out. Kate leaned back into the car. "Bring back treats."

Dean shooed her away. "Don't do anything stupid."

Kate shrugged. "I happen to be highly intelligent and only plan on doing intelligent things."

Dean gently revved the car to get her to move back. "Yeah, you plan a lot."

Kate shut the door and stepped back. She turned to Hannah and walked up the steps of Bobby's porch. "He has a plaque in his room. We are totally going to move it."

Hannah was down for anything that Kate thought of. "The 'kid with the hardest childhood' one?"

Kate grinned. "Yep."

Karen welcomed both girls into the house and got them each a snack and drink. "If you need anything, please let me know." Bobby and John were outside doing what she assumed was guy stuff. They were working in the shop, and she had no interest in going out there. She liked the warm house.

(Bobby and John)

John sharpened a blade and turned it over in his hand. Using a similar idea to what the kids had, he wrapped wire around the base of the blade so that it would work against different creatures. It may not kill them, but it would sting. Another hunter had the ability to make weapons and they had chatted about infusing knives with different materials. They just didn't want to mess with the integrity of the blade.

Bobby took the knife from John and tested the sharpness. A full inventory of their weapons was under way, and he was also interested in making more of their weapons dual purpose.

John picked up two bullets and compared them. One had engravings on it. He suddenly tensed up and slowly turned around.

Bobby saw John looking behind him and turned around as well.

"Kate." John said.

Older Kate gave Bobby an awkward wave and stepped into the shop. "Hi."

John still had a bone to pick with her about how they left off the last time he saw her.

Older Kate took a deep breath. "I didn't make the deal."

John raised an eyebrow.

Older Kate bounced on her toes. "I didn't. Taylor laughed at me when I got back and then refused to help me even if I did want to go through with it."

John leaned back against the shop table. "Well, it is good that you listened to me for once."

Older Kate scrunched her nose. "I've listened to you at least four times so you shouldn't be so shocked."

Bobby just couldn't believe what he was seeing. "What brings you back?"

Older Kate rubbed her hands together excitedly before dropping a backpack onto the floor. She crouched and pulled out a binder. "I have a book."

John took the book. "What is it for?"

Older Kate smiled. "We have found out a lot about Taylor and me. I'm talking about actual research into why we are able to do things. Don't worry, it isn't freak stuff. It is all stuff that I can see and not change the timeline."

John flipped through the pages. "Why did you bring it back with you?"

"Maybe this will speed up some stuff. It is a deeper look into what makes us who we are. You and younger me are about to go on a trip. I could use some light reading." Kate said.

John wasn't sure how he felt about the book. Was she being manipulative?

Kate could see the distrust on John's face. "You can read through it."

Bobby let John read. "Is this something you had to bring back?"

Older Kate shrugged. "No. I came back for another reason," She sidestepped away from John. "I have a very sad someone back at home that lost their stuffed animal. Try as I might, I couldn't find one because the company stopped making them. So, being the saint that I am, I came back to grab a few."

John scratched his chin. "Who?"

Kate zipped her backpack. "Now, if I told you that, you'd know too much too soon." She looked at her watch. "So, read it. Give it to me if you want to. If you don't, I'll talk the entire way to Tennessee and you're not fun to be around when you're grumpy."

John pinched the bridge of his nose as she disappeared.

Bobby resituated his cap. "She hasn't changed at all."

"I think she comes back just to throw me off." John said.

(Kate and Hannah)

Part one of the project was done so they needed to put their data onto a poster. Kate could handle that.

Hannah double checked their math although she didn't need to. She transferred the data points onto a grid so that their graph was clear to read. "Theoretical science isn't any fun."

"It is percentages and probabilities." Kate said.

Hannah sighed heavily. "We should do a project with your data and claim it was theoretical."

Kate stopped writing. "My luck, the teacher would see it and want to know who our subject was."

"We could say that we made up the subject." Hannah said.

"He wanted this to be a 'realistic' experiment." Kate said.

"You are real." Hannah said. "I want to go to the lab when you go."

Kate chewed the end of her pen. "I can ask."

Hannah leaned back and crossed her arms. "We could run the same tests but not show anyone the data."

Kate added a title for the poster in neat handwriting. "I don't think I'm allowed to do anything."

The door opened and then closed but John sounded like he had gone to Bobby's office.

"Oh, come on." Hannah said "You are strong. You could run stats on each creature. You have to be able to fight them just using abilities."

"I am for sure not allowed to fight anything. I can barely have an independent thought." Kate said.

Hannah pulled the poster away from her. "Doesn't your dad have a llama in jail?"

Kate giggled. "A lamia. Yes. I'm supposed to cure him or something. He has a kid with the same traits."

"Let's do it. Has he just been left alone?" Hannah asked.

"Our angel friend is checking on him." Kate said.

"He isn't a freak. He isn't dangerous. You could talk Cas into taking you or just read him." Hannah said.

Kate waited too long to say no. She squeaked when John showed up in the kitchen doorway.

"What are you talking about?" John asked.

"Just abilities." Kate said.

John grabbed the heavy ruler from the top of the refrigerator and pulled Kate to stand up. He swatted her once with it but hard enough to make her react. He let go of her and quickly grabbed Hannah's arm to do the same to her.

Kate gasped loudly. "Dad!"

Hannah cringed. Her brain was slowly catching up with the sting. Her parents had never smacked her so she didn't realize just how bad it could hurt.

John silenced Kate. "Your dad told me to wear you out if you helped Kate out. He's told you he'd do that as well."

Kate whined. "She isn't helping me do anything bad.

"I heard the conversation. Let that be a motivator to steer the conversation elsewhere. Hannah, did that hurt?"

Hannah nodded her head.

"I can't get it through your head that this is dangerous so maybe that will work. That is one swat. If Kate gets into trouble over this stuff, she's going to get many many more than that. You can imagine how unpleasant that it." John said.

Hannah nodded her head again. "I'm sorry."

John put the ruler down. "Stop trying to work yourselves up. You are to work on your school project and nothing else."

Hannah sat back down and stared out the window. She was embarrassed and it really did hurt.

Kate assured John that she understood and wouldn't do anything.

John left them in the kitchen but went to Bobby's office. Hannah was going to wind up getting hurt.

Kate walked around to hug Hannah. "I'm sorry he smacked you with that."

Hannah gave her a small smile. "I'm okay. That did sting really bad."

Kate snorted and scoffed. "How do you think I feel when I get into trouble?"

Hannah shook her head. "I'll keep my ideas to myself."

John sat across from Bobby and slowly let his breath leave his lungs. "Those two are going to come up with some kind of plan."

Bobby looked up from yet another book. "You don't think that was enough to scare Hannah?"

John's nose flared. "For a little while."

Bobby agreed with John. "Do you think Charlie will stay out of it?"

John leaned back into the chair and laced his fingers behind his head. "I think she's going to keep pushing for information and find something bad. I don't think she'd knowingly help Kate do anything she shouldn't." He groaned as he sat forward. "Kate, come in here."

Kate tiptoed into the office.

"Are you almost done with that project?" John asked.

Kate chewed her lip. "We have to finish the poster. Most of the math type stuff was fast and easy."

John nodded slowly. "Finish it and I'll give you the book your older self gave me."

Kate's eyes widened. "She... I gave you a book? What kind of book? Is it about us? Why did I bring you a book? How long have you had it?"

John waited for her to finish. "It is a book about research that has been done about you and Taylor. Finish your project and stop talking about stuff that you shouldn't. Then, I will let you have it."

Kate was out of the office and back in the kitchen in record time. She worked fast and had the entire poster done except for the colored parts.

Hannah asked her what happened.

"I gave my dad a book and he's going to let me read it." Kate stood up straight and tilted her head. "Like... older me gave him a book for younger me... now me... to read."

Hannah grinned. "Really? That is so cool. I can't wait to time travel with you."

Kate went back to the poster. "I have to focus. He is going to let me have it once we are done." She stepped back so that she could see down the hallway. "You know, this is just another example of how much more I am motivated when you give me a goal and not a punishment."

John leaned back so that he could look down the hallway as well. "Do I need to take the book away?"

Kate scrunched her nose. "I'm almost done with the poster. I'm just saying that I've gotten more done in the five minutes since you mentioned the book."

John chuckled and shook his head when she retreated into the kitchen. He dialed Sam's number and checked in on him and Jess.

(Sam and Jess)

Sam had classes but Jess skipped hers for the day. He wasn't thrilled with that but couldn't miss one of his. Besides, there was no way he was going to be able to pry Jacob out of Jess's hands for more than five minutes.

Jess held Jacob against her chest and rubbed his back. The loud ringing of Sam's phone startled him.

Sam answered the phone.

John asked if they needed anything. He'd asked earlier but he was concerned.

Sam was a little thrown off. Sure, John had changed when Kate showed up, but this was another side that he had not seen yet. "We got all the baby stuff we need. He won't be here long term."

John heard Jess humming. He spoke a little louder. "I will have someone pick him up to take him to Marie's house."

Jess snapped her head up and stepped closer to the phone. "No."

"No? A baby that small is a big responsibility and you shouldn't have to handle it." John said. He was waiting for Jess to react. He gave Bobby a sly smile and counted to three on his fingers.

"I'm handling it. We are handling it. We aren't putting this baby in a car to drive for days. He is comfortable here and his dad is going to be okay. It is irresponsible-"

John cut her off. "Jess. Jess. I know you have it handled. I figured I'd just get your reaction."

Jess huffed. "Don't joke like that. You are as bad as Dean."

Sam kissed her forehead. "I'll need something to calm her down when we have to give him back."

John nodded slowly. "He has a dad that will be missing him."

Sam sighed. "Thankfully he does have a dad."

(Bobby's house)

John finished up the conversation and sat back in the chair. He was pensive.

"I take it that the baby is doing well." Bobby said.

"I doubt he's been sat down today." John said.

Bobby rocked in his desk chair. "What are you thinking?"

John furrowed his eyebrows. "I think, when he gets himself killed seeking revenge, that baby is going to be without a mom and a dad."

Bobby had witnessed that exact scenario a dozen times. "You've lasted this long."

John shook his head slightly. "I don't think I'd be here if I didn't have a hand to play in raising nephilian."

Bobby knew John was remembering the night that Mary died. "I'd wish you luck, but they do live here."

John's knees cracked as he stood up. "You play an important part too. Don't let that go to your head."

Kate slid by the office on socked feet. "We are done." She looked John up and down. "Shouldn't arthritis start when you're older?"

John raised an eyebrow. "I don't have arthritis."

"I'm sure Hannah could hear those cracks and pops from the kitchen, and she doesn't even have Winchester hearing." Kate said.

John lightly cuffed the side of her head. He spoke loud enough so that Hannah could hear him. "She had better not have Winchester listening either because none of you listen worth a damn."

Kate slowly smirked.

"If you claim that my methods are why you don't listen, I'll have to prove a point." John said as he handed her the book.

Kate gave him a sweet smile and batted her eyelashes. "Mind reading is an ability."

John gave her a light swat to get her moving. He didn't need to read minds to know where hers was headed.

Kate opened the book and scanned the pages. She got highlighters and post-it notes. She also got a few pieces of paper.

Hannah leaned against the table with her elbows. "What are you doing?"

Kate held her pencil in her mouth. "We are learning."

Dean parked his car and unloaded it with Taylor's help. The house was too quiet. He knew Hannah was still there. He checked the time. She'd be going home soon. He walked into the kitchen and froze. "What?"

Kate spun around. "Dad gave me a book about me. This is fascinating. Did you know that humans have three types of muscle fibers? Of course, everyone knows that."

Dean blinked. "I didn't know that."

Kate grabbed his arm and pulled him to the table. "Humans have type 1, type 2a, and type 2x fibers. Type 1 are your endurance fibers. They are slow but last a long time. 2x are the fast ones but fatigue quickly. 2a is in the middle." She moved a piece of paper. "Taylor and I have extra muscle fibers. That is why we can do certain things. Obviously, you helped me with this in the future because I have type 3b."

Dean rubbed the top of his head. "What?"

"B for brat." Kate said with an eyeroll. "Taylor has very similar ones but his are 3t. So, these extra fibers are fast and last for a long time. That is why we can run for a longer period of time and still be fast."

Dean sat down in a chair. "So, you have extra stuff. We knew that."

Hannah bounced on her toes. "Show him the energy systems!"

Kate swiped papers away from the table and turned to a chapter in the book. "Humans have energy systems. Let's say you are running. Your body will use one system immediately. Then, it switches over to an anerobic system. That means you don't need oxygen for a short bit. Then, your body goes into aerobic systems. If you are working out or running for a long time, you'll kind of feel yourself go through those phases."

Dean nodded.

"So, Taylor and I have those but also extra energy systems. Once we hit the aerobic system, we take in more oxygen than a typical human. Then... then, get this." Kate said excitedly. "After the point of exhaustion, we use a fourth system that does not use oxygen. That is why Taylor could hold his breath for so long. Okay, I could too but he was in water and that seems more obvious."

Dean rubbed his temples. "Why would someone go into that much detail? Shouldn't it just matter that you can run fast and heal?"

Kate grinned. "Well, I took part in the research. Oh my god, Dean. Let me tell you about the healing."

Dean stopped her. "Draw me a picture. I'm glad you are excited but that is all over my head."

Kate frowned. "You are smart."

Dean got up and hugged her. "I'm tired."

Kate shrugged and went back to the book.

Dean stopped in the office to talk to John. "Does it worry you that Hannah seems to be right with Kate on all of this stuff?"

John leaned forward to place his elbows on his knees. "Yes, yes it does."
