Lee returned to the motel room with a cast and sling on his arm. He felt stupid. John did a good job of waking him up. It was painful for his pride but he did make a dumb choice. He sat down with John while Kate kept Krissy busy. "If I need to get a phone, I will."
John had talked to Pamela while they were waiting for Lee to get back. "I have extras. She will just need to know how to call someone and understand that it isn't a toy."
Krissy spun around. "I'm not a baby. I know its not a toy."
Lee gave her a look that told her to calm down.
John grabbed an extra phone from his truck and programmed it with important numbers. He showed Lee and let him explain it to Krissy.
Krissy was a little worried that she would forget how to spell names. What if she called the wrong person?
"Word can move fast. If you call any of these numbers, we will get you to the right person." John said.
The plan was for Krissy to wear it on a lanyard around her neck if she was going to be in a situation that required her to be alone. Lee needed time to heal so that would be a while. He had agreed to go to Marie's house for a few weeks.
Kate saw Lee's face change and cringed.
John sighed. "We can go get dinner."
Lee just nodded. He needed to have 'the' talk with Krissy since she did leave the car.
Krissy sensed the change and wrapped herself around John's leg.
Lee told her to let him go and to walk over to where he was sitting.
Krissy shook her head.
John felt a little bad for her. She witnessed something horrible but she did leave. She didn't stay. He was black and white with his own kids in that way.
Kate studied John's face. Was that guilt? Was it discomfort?
John put a hand on Krissy's head. "I'm not the one to try to run to. Ask Kate what happens when she doesn't follow an order?" He sighed. "You just listen to your dad." He moved his hand to the back of her head and gently nudged her.
Kate gave Krissy a sympathetic look.
Krissy's hands had to be pried away from John's leg but he did make it out the door with Kate.
Kate held her tongue until both truck doors were shut. "What was that?"
John wasn't sure what she meant.
"Were you considering stopping him?" Kate asked.
John pulled a face. "No."
Kate raised an eyebrow.
"No. You know how I feel about that stuff." John said.
Kate smirked. "I can read your emotions."
"Not if you know what's good for you." John countered.
"I just think she might have broken you a bit." Kate said.
"Again, she isn't my responsibility." John said. He gave Kate a stern look but wasn't angry.
"Come on, she attached to you because you saved her life. She thought you were scary but now likes you. That has to soften you a little bit." Kate said.
John's nose flared. "She didn't. It didn't."
Kate sat back with her arms crossed. "Uh huh." She gasped and dug around in her back pack when they stopped. She pulled a pack of baseball cards from the front pocket and handed them to John.
John furrowed his eyebrows. He turned the package over and paused.
"You wouldn't let us celebrate your birthday on the 15th. I didn't want to be pushy but you deserve good days too." Kate said.
John slowly opened the package. He smiled. His mother used to buy a pack of baseball cards for each birthday. He slowly turned to look at Kate. "Did you read me?"
Kate's eyes widened. "What? No!"
John held up two cards. "Are you sure?"
Kate nodded quickly. "I talked to Pamela about it."
John furrowed his eyebrows. The Hall boys had stolen part of his collection when he was a kid and his two favorite ones were in the stack that they stole. He never could find copies.
Kate let him process. "I talked to Pamela the night of your birthday. I didn't want to brush it under the rug. You mentioned them getting stolen to Pamela. Charlie tracked down those two and the man who sold them to us added in the extras.
John rubbed the back of his head. Holding the cards made him feel like he was 13 again.
Kate grinned sheepishly. "Great, you're touched. So you can't get mad that I zapped them here from Charlie."
John's cheek twitched as he was fighting a laugh. "I'm not mad." He hugged Kate and slipped the package of cards into a safe place. "My mom bought me a pack of those every year."
Kate nodded. "I also asked Charlie to track down those two boys."
John eyed Kate.
"I'm totally not going to curse them or anything." Kate said.
John smirked. "Then why look them up?"
"I figured if they turned out a certain way, it would make you happy. I guarantee they don't have such awesome children." Kate said.
John opened his door. "That was thoughtful."
Kate tapped her head with her finger. "Sometimes I think of good things."
(Sioux Falls)
Dean stepped into the house in search of food. He had been helping Taylor with a project that would help with the emergency cellar. He got a sandwich and sat down for a moment. He got back up when he heard a soft knock at the door. He opened it and was immedietly alarmed. "Hannah?"
Hannah smiled. "Hi, Dean."
Dean cleared his throat. "Kate isn't here."
Hannah scoffed. "I know that." She rubbed her arms and swayed from foot to foot to show that she was cold.
Dean groaned and let her inside. "Do your parents know you are here?"
Hannah shrugged. "Not exactly but I'm allowed to come over here."
Dean sat his sandwich down. "Why do they not know you are here?"
Hannah blinked a few times.
"Is everything okay?" Dean asked.
"Yeah." Hannah said.
"Then why are you here if you know Kate isn't here?" Dean asked, a little annoyed that she wasn't giving him much information.
Hannah pulled a binder from her backpack. "I have research."
Dean called for Bobby. "Hannah, you need to call your mom."
Hannah sighed heavily and sent her mom a message telling her where she was.
"You can't just walk across town like that. Someone could have picked you up. You could have frozen." Dean said.
Hannah rubbed her face. "If I am in a bad situation, all I have to do is call down my angel."
Bobby resituated his cap.
Hannah put her binder on the table. "I'm a vessel. If I was to get kidnapped, all I have to do is let the angel in."
"You are a kid." Dean corrected. "You could die just from letting the angel use you."
Hannah shrugged. "Haven't so far."
Bobby narrowed his eyes. "Come again?"
Hannah sighed and threw her hands up. "It has happened a few times and I'm fine. Don't look at me like that. I have valuable information."
Dean had to count in his head. Kate was off with John so he didn't have to worry as much about her. Then, Hannah shows up and he suddenly felt a lot of worry.
Hannah opened the binder and presented Bobby and Dean with a slip of paper. "You guys think that some of the freaks have ghosts. It looks like the only ones that have ghosts are those that had souls marked for hell."
Dean stood up taller and crossed his arms. "Does Kate know about this?"
Hannah scoffed. "No. Why do you think I came over here? I can't help her but I can help you."
"No." Dean said. "You have no business looking into any of this."
Hannah rolled her eyes. "I already did so do you want an explanation?"
"You can explain until one of your parents gets here." Dean said.
Hannah walked them through how she let the angel use her vessel to find things that could help them. She had a few notes that she didn't think anyone but Kate could decipher. "My angel said that souls are all marked a certain way. People who make deals have the darkest mark. Their soul is already so bound to hell that they cannot be held back as a ghost. Some people have a bright mark because they are going to heaven. This would be babies and young children who have not done anything wrong. Some of the souls that turned to ghosts had something in common. They had a dark mark but it wasn't black. This could be someone that committed murder as a crime of passion. It could be someone who was a drunk driver many years ago. They are still set up to go to hell but not like a serial killer would be."
Dean held up his hand. "How exactly did you come across this information?"
Hannah bit her lip. "Grapevine." She continued with the soul talk. "Hunters want to save people. They also make questionable decisions. That would make them the perfect subject to turn into a ghost as their body turns into a freak."
Dean's head was about to explode. "Did you see this happen? Are you taking the word of an angel? Have you talked to demons?"
Hannah fidgeted. "I'm taking my angel's word."
Dean ran his fingers through his hair. "I'll speak to Castiel. You can't keep letting the angel in. You are going to get yourself killed." He growled and left the kitchen in search of Ian. He carried him back into the room and held him out toward Hannah. "You are going to take him and wait for your parents to get here."
"I can just ride my bike home." Hannah said.
Bobby sat down across from her. "Don't do that. You have gotten yourself in deep. You knew about hunting and that made you an easy target. Now you may know things that other people or creatures want to know. You can't just be out by yourself."
Dean stepped outside to call John first. He was out of his depth. Making decisions concerning Kate and Taylor was stressful but Hannah was on a different level. He wanted her parents to make decisions. She had been exposed to the supernatural through no fault of his own but he didn't want her falling into a deeper hole on his watch.
Hannah brought Ian outside to let him run around. He was such a busy little guy. She pushed him on the tire swing and spun him around. Andy joined them and set up a game of tag.
Dean finished his conversation with John and put his phone away. He could hear the kids laughing and playing. That was what was supposed to happen.
Andy, in an attempt to help his mom, was trying to get Ian to stop using diapers. He showed him that it was fun to pee on trees and stuff and was pretty proud of the progress. He saw Ian looking uncomfortable and looked around the yard. There were trees but they might be beyond the limit of where they were allowed to go by themselves. He turned Ian around and pointed him to a tire.
Dean saw the boys by the car and decided to see what they were doing. He put his hands on his hips and cleared his throat.
Andy snapped his head around to look at Dean. "He had to."
"On my car?" Dean asked.
Ian grinned and scrunched his nose.
Dean took a step toward them. He took another and the boys took off running. He scooped Ian up and held him upside down. "This is worse than running off at the restaurant."
Andy giggled. "No it isn't. He didn't hurt the car."
Dean motioned toward the car. "Baby is not a fire hydrant and Ian is not a dog."
Andy tried to pry Dean's hands from Ian. "You can't beat him up."
Dean sat Ian down and eyed Andy. "You were the one that told him to do it." He got a call from April and paused in his pursuit of the boys. "How partial are you to these two?"
April gasped. "Oh no, what did they do now?"
Dean told her about the tire. "Hey, don't laugh."
April smiled. "That is what little boys do."
Dean caught Andy when he ran by. "I think I'll just throw them both in the pond."
Andy screeched. "No! It's cold."
Dean ruffled his hair. "You're lucky your mom called."
April got a good chuckle out of the banter. "I can come pick them up. I'm sure Karen or Bobby would loan you a cup of water to rinse the tire off with."
Dean lightly flicked Andy's ear. "You can if you want to. If they stay over here I may have to beat them up."
April's smiled brightened. Andy was clearly trying to fight Dean but laughing too hard to do much. "I'd like both of them alive and well when I get there."
Dean narrowed his eyes. "I make no promises."
Hannah sat on the porch steps. The boys were cute. She wished she had cooler siblings. Her siblings just ignored her.
After the boys were picked up, Dean turned to Hannah. "Your dad is on his way."
Hannah chewed her cheek.
"We appreciate that you didn't bring any of this to Kate. You can't go putting yourself in danger though." Dean said.
"Why does it matter so much?" Hannah asked. "I'm just one person. Little things like this could help you save the world."
Dean studied her. "You got initiated into the club the moment you got taken by that vampire. This isn't a club you want to be a part of. Hunters, or people who have been touched by a creature, form a trauma bond. So no, you aren't just a person. You are Kate's best friend. She needs someone for the typical teenage stuff. That is your job. You watch chic flicks and complain about family. It isn't your job to save the world."
Hannah frowned. "I'm not in danger."
"You are. You just don't know it. Kate has lost a lot of people. She doesn't need to lose you. If you got hurt, or worse, she would blame herself. If the data you got is accurate, it could help us. There is just too much risk involved. You are 12. Just be 12." Dean said. He could still see an odd look on Hannah's face. "I'm giving you a heads up to make your life easier. My dad had a few things to say about this. Your dad is on his way and one of us will talk to him. This can't continue."
Hannah slumped. "At least I didn't give it to her."
Dean smirked. "Yeah, you'd get you both strangled."
"I won't look for anything else." Hannah paused. "I won't allow my angel to take over for research purposes."
Dean narrowed his eyes.
"If I get jumped by a pack of dogs, I would call them down." Hannah said.
Dean just nodded. He thought that Hannah was a bit too much like Kate.
Hannah looked up at Dean. "Wait, what are you going to say to my dad?"
(Jess and Sam)
Jacob's father got released from the hospital and spent a day trying to figure a few things out. He missed his son. He just didn't know how he was going to get their life back on track. His car had been torn to shreds so he had Ryan drive him to Sam's apartment. He had gotten constant updates about Jacob so he trusted that he was being taken care of.
Sam walked outside to greet Ryan and Tony. He held out his hand to shake each of their hands and welcomed them inside.
Tony was not expecting Sam to be so young. He wasn't expecting the shaggy hair or the kid to be so tall. He looked like every other college kid and didn't seem like he'd know anything about werewolves or how to care for an infant.
Jess had Jacob dressed in a clean outfit and was feeding him when Tony walked in. She introduced herself and offered the baby to Tony to hold.
Tony was taken aback by how much the baby had grown in such a short time. He thanked Jess and cradled his son in his arms. As he spoke to Sam and Jess, he saw them as being more mature than any other young people he had met. Sam did know a lot about what was going on. He didn't know how John raised two boys while hunting. He didn't know how he raised two boys as a single father.
Jess looked at the time and sat next to Tony. "He has been getting upset around this time and we take him outside. The cool air seems to help."
Tony choked up. That was why he and his wife were out so late the night that they were attacked. The car ride put Jacob back to sleep. He sat on the steps and looked up at the sky. The stars were all out. He needed to go home. He needed to go back to work. No, he needed time to heal. What was he going to do with his wife's things? How was he going to be able to sleep in their bed?
Sam joined Tony and sat down as well. He didn't say anything, giving the other man a chance to think.
Tony swallowed hard when Jacob started to fuss. He shifted him and sat him up to avoid reflux. "He has done this every night?"
Sam nodded.
"I'm sorry." Tony said.
Sam handed Tony the pacifier that seemed to be the only one that Jacob would take. "It's okay. We have made it a nightly thing to come out here. Jess and I just sit out here and chat."
"Does he still wake up a lot at night?" Tony asked.
"Yes. I think that it is normal for a small baby though. He falls back to sleep after a bottle." Sam said. He didn't know what he would do with a full night of sleep. He'd probably be up helping Jess deal with her grief.
Tony left the apartment to go to a motel. He needed to get used to his son again. He just couldn't go straight back home. It was too painful.
Jess crashed when the others left. She hugged Sam and took a deep breath to steady herself.
"This is good. His dad will be okay." Sam said.
Jess swallowed. "I know. I just worry. He's not going to have a mom. He's going to miss out on stuff."
Sam placed a kiss on her head. "I didn't have one either. He will be okay."
"I think he made me think of my own mom. How could someone have a child and then resent them? How did she look at me as a newborn and not promise to be nurturing?" Jess asked.
"I don't know." Sam said. His dad made mistakes but fought like hell to keep them alive. Martha was always dismissing Jess. "We will be refrigerator parents."
Jess looked up at him. "Huh?"
"If our kid comes home with a drawing or worksheet, we will put it on the refrigerator. Also, we won't move around and live out of motels. They will have stability and support." Sam said.
Jess relaxed. "We will be good parents."
Sam wrapped his arms around her. "Not yet."
Jess chuckled softly. "Not yet."
(Tennessee)
Kate was done with driving. She wanted to explore. She did get to talk to John and form a stronger bond. She didn't need an outward reaction over the baseball cards. She could feel how touched he was. They had left the next morning and sent Lee and Krissy right back to Marie's house. They both needed time to heal. That put Kate and John back on track and they made it across the Tennessee state line after John had driven a questionable amount of hours.
John stopped at a motel. "We will get there by tomorrow. I just need some rest."
Kate couldn't argue. She was tired too. She still thought fatigue was stupid since she had abilities but she didn't have a reason for why it still happened.
John got their bags inside and tossed them on one of the beds. He needed to write a few things in his journal before he gave into the nagging pull of sleep deprivation.
Kate showered and changed into pajamas. She wanted to go straight to sleep but her heart was unsettled.
John patted the spot beside him on the bed. "What are you working yourself up over?"
Kate curled up with her head on one of his pillows. "Too many things. Is Hannah okay?"
John crossed one ankle over the other and leaned back against the headboard. "She's okay."
"She just wants to help." Kate said.
"Sometimes that ends badly." John said. "She doesn't need to go off on her own."
Kate frowned. "I don't want her to get hurt."
"Exactly." John said. He reached over and massaged her head the way that Dean often did. He smiled as her eyes closed. She was a bit like a cat. He finished his journal entry and placed it on the bedside table. He leaned back against the headboard and closed his eyes. He listened to her breathing and relaxed. For that moment, everyone was okay. He turned the light off beside him and leaned his head back. He opened his eyes for a moment to look at where the baseball cards had been placed. Kate had a heart of gold. She would do anything to make someone happy. Unfortunately, with big things, she would run straight into a fire. There were no fires that night and she looked peaceful. He closed his eyes again and let sleep take him.
The next morning, Kate stirred and bumped John. She didn't remember falling asleep.
John got up to make coffee and downed it. He'd make a stop at a gas station for better coffee. "How did you sleep?"
Kate rubbed her face. "I had dreams."
Maybe he was wrong about there not being fires the previous night. "About?"
Kate cracked her neck. "I don't know yet."
John got ready for the day and repacked his duffle. "The return trip will need to be faster."
Kate yawned. "I can always zap us there."
John pulled his boots on. "Not a chance."
Kate switched clothes and put her shoes on as well. "I can drive while you sleep."
John put a hand on her head to steer her toward the door. "Again, not a chance."
Kate read while John drove. She was distracted by a thought that she couldn't finish. She finally looked up from her book. "It's the fear, isn't it?"
John furrowed his brows. "Do you mind looping me in on whatever you've thought up?"
Kate tucked her feet under herself. "So, I've been thinking. Obviously, you've changed and you treat some people different than others. That isn't necessarily bad but I'm making observation based theories. You said the day I blocked you from Sam was the day you started to change. You said it was because I was scared of you. To add to that, you related that back to when you saw the same type of fear on Dean's face. Fear has a weird effect on you."
John was silent for a while. He soaked in what she said and dug deep for understanding within himself. "I think I know what you mean. Seeing that fear on your face made me stop. Hearing Krissy scream and seeing her terrified made me stop. Fear can keep you alive. I don't like seeing anyone scared but I guess, in a way, certain types of fear do catch me off guard."
Kate nodded slowly. "Like a kid getting scared of the dark doesn't sting as much as a kid who is scared of a life or death situation. I think you might just feel like you can't fix that kind of fear and that is why it bothers you."
John's nose flared. "Stay out of my head."
Kate laced her fingers together. "I'm basically a therapist now."
John was going to shut down again but fought against it. "When we got to that house, Krissy grabbed ahold of me and I was responsible for keeping her safe in a situation where I'm not even safe. Kids run to an adult to protect them and comfort them. I don't handle that so well. I want to fix the problem and be done with it."
"So, how does that translate to spoiling us girls?" Kate asked with a smirk.
"I don't spoil you." John said. He looked out the window at the road ahead. "You don't hide your fear as well as the boys do. When Sam and Dean were young, I was learning how to survive. I was scared out of my mind. I needed them to be scared too so they would follow orders. I numbed myself to it. I am not as numb now. I regret being so hard on them but do not regret the men they turned into."
Kate chewed her thumbnail. "Would things have been different if you guys had had a Dena and Samantha?"
John snorted. "I'd say so. I put a lot on the boys. I forced them to grow up fast. I can't say how it would have been different because I don't know. Sam would probably still be book smart. Dean would be everything that he doesn't want you to be."
Kate grinned. "I should turn him into a girl for a day. Oh! Taylor could just make him think that he's a girl."
John cringed. "I don't think that is the prank that you think it would be."
Kate tilted her head. "Why not? He'd hate it?"
John blew air through his nose. "If he woke up and looked in a mirror and saw a woman's body, do you honestly think he'd be mad?"
Kate's jaw dropped. "Oh my god."
John scratched his head. "Things turned out the way that they did and that is for the best."
Kate scrunched her nose. "I had better get a niece or little sister one day. There is too much testosterone floating around."
John agreed on the niece part because he was absolutely done adopting kids.
(Sioux Falls)
Taylor worked most of the day. He was in that weird trance again where he just built things without thinking.
Dean alerted Bobby and John but didn't say anything to Taylor. After Hannah had gone home, he needed to take a step back from the kids. He needed another trip to Vegas.
Karen corralled Taylor into the house and gave him something to eat. "Are you doing all of this for fun or because you have one of those feelings?"
Taylor blinked. He looked toward the door. "The work just needs to be done."
Karen had him eat slowly and chatted with him. She didn't want to interrupt the progress but didn't want him to work himself to death either.
Dean caught Taylor before he went back outside. "Do you want to see Hailey or something?"
Taylor looked at his phone. "I don't know if she is busy."
"Ask." Dean said. He steered Taylor to the swing. "Are you running out of things to keep you busy or are you worried that something is coming?"
Taylor sat down and rocked the swing back. "I have time away from school. I just wanted to help get a bunch of stuff done so it doesn't all fall back on you guys. I don't feel like something is coming. I just want to keep my hands busy."
Dean got an idea. "Bobby wanted some junk broken down and burned." He tilted his head to show Taylor what would need to be done.
Taylor looked at the pile of shattered wood and material. "Just burned?"
Dean shrugged. "I don't think he'd be happy if we blew it up right by the house."
Taylor nudged the pile with his foot. "I'm getting my bow."
Dean chuckled. "Why?"
Taylor turned to go inside. "To safely light it from a distance."
Dean caught on. "Big fire?"
Taylor nodded his head. "Big."
(John and Kate)
Kate was thrilled to be in Knoxville. She was even more thrilled with the college campus. It wasn't crowded because most of the students went home to visit family or just didn't want to be out on a blustery day. It was warmer than South Dakota but she still needed her jacket.
John called his client and got an update. He didn't want to leave Kate in the truck because it was parked too far from the building. He had her follow him and found a study room. "You will stay here. Keep your phone on. If you leave in order to assist me or try to do anything, you will regret it."
Kate crossed her heart. "I promise I'll stay put. You won't let me tour the place tomorrow if I make you mad."
John handed her some salt. "You know the drill. I mean it, Kate, you have to stay here."
Kate really didn't need to be told twice. She was not going to put her tour in jeopardy. She settled down at the table and opened her book again. She got distracted by posters on the wall. They were all science related although some were about different types of rocks while others focused on bone and tissue. She made some mental notes to bounce off of John when he got back.
John set up shop and took an hour or two to completely rid the place of ghosts. None of them were angry. Most were just confused. He didn't have to worry about being thrown around like he would have with a poltergeist. He returned to the study room, half expecting Kate to have wandered off. He opened the door and saw a mess of papers scattered across the table.
Kate snapped her head toward the door. "Hi."
John swept up the salt. "What are you doing?"
Kate looked down at the table. "I don't know."
John looked at her work. "You don't know?"
"It is kind of like when I started seeing time before Karen got to come back." Kate said.
John rubbed the top of his head. "Put those away before someone sees them."
Kate gathered the papers and put them in a folder. "How are the ghosts?"
"Gone." John said. He walked Kate out of the building and caught movement out of the corner of his eye.
Kate saw it too. She focused on the movement and quietly told John that someone was messing with the truck.
John knew there were cameras all around the parking lot. If the person wasn't just a person, there would be video evidence. If he got into an altercation, there would be evidence.
Kate tapped John. "I'll distract him. You go around the other way."
John kept an eye on Kate. She stopped by the front of the truck and allowed him the time he needed to quietly make his way around the other side.
Kate cleared her throat. "What are you doing?"
The guy snapped his head up. He said he had a gun and for Kate to go away.
Kate gasped sarcastically and put her hands on her face. "Oh no. A gun?" She dropped her hands. "Is this your first robbery? Are you trying to open that with a screwdriver? Have you watched too many movies? There is no way you can get that open with the tool you are using. Besides, what do you think is in there? I guess certain tools could be sold for extra money but that is a big gamble."
The guy walked around the side of the truck. "Listen, kid, you just run along."
Kate rolled her eyes. "You aren't the least bit curious why a girl of my age would be out in the rain all by herself, at night, on a college campus?"
The guy was so thrown off by how Kate was asking.
Kate crossed her arms. "I'm going to have to give this a 2 out of 10. Claiming you have a gun was a bold move but the rest of it is sloppy."
John heard Kate and pinched the bridge of his nose.
Kate pulled her phone out like she was going to call the police.
The guy lunged to grab the phone but fell because she moved to the side.
Kate sighed. "That was sad."
The guy felt himself being lifted by the back of his hood. He tried to look behind him but couldn't due to a solid mass pressing into him.
Kate tilted her head. "Oh, I forgot to answer. The reason I'm out here is because I'm not alone."
The guy pulled at the front of his hoodie to release the presser from his neck. "Let me go."
John shook him once. He glared at him and growled "Run."
Kate laughed when he slid twice trying to get the hell out of dodge.
John grumbled as they got into the truck. "I thought you were going to make a noise to distract him."
Kate shrugged. "I didn't want him to get jumpy."
John started the truck. "You can't be cocky."
Kate settled into her seat. "I couldn't use abilities. You couldn't use a weapon. I've been on this long drive and I just thought I could entertain myself."
John snorted and popped her on the head. "If you do that with a demon, you are in for it."
Kate acted offended. "It has been months since I did that with a demon. We all have our tactics and mine is wit." Kate smirked. "Yours is that look. You know, we joke around that you'll murder us and that is why. The tone is different but the look on your face is the exact same."
John took a slow breath through his nose. He chuckled as he let the breath out. "I should have left you at home."
Kate smiled sweetly. "You're glad you didn't, though."
(The bunker)
The bunker lights were off and the halls were quiet. There was a gentle hum from the refrigerator.
Soft foot falls disrupted the quiet. They travelled through the halls and stopped at a strange door. The steps retreated from the room after a few minutes.
Older Kate used her wings to cast a soft glow over the library. She placed a box on the big table and looked through the rows of books for a specific one. She pulled the book and opened a small compartment that was hidden away. There was a smaller book inside. She flipped through the pages and put the book to rest on top of the box. The box couldn't leave the bunker. She had to leave it there to be found at a later date.
She entered the room with the map table and swiped her hand over it. The map was not peaceful. The lights were busy. She studied the map and sorted the lights into levels of concern. There was one that shown bright red and pulsed. She put her thumb over the light as if to snuff it out. Things would be so simple if she could just snuff it out. It would be hell getting to the point where she could do that.
(John and Kate)
Kate sat up in bed shortly after 9 pm. She had gotten a flash of redlight in her vision and it spooked her. There were no lights outside. The street lamps were dim and the tendrils of light barely made it through the curtains. She shuffled into the bathroom to splash her face but stopped as her hand tingled. A bit of red light seeped through her skin and formed a ball in her hand. She left the bathroom to show John but it light dissipated too quickly.
Kate glanced at her backpack with the stack of papers tucked neatly inside. What did red light mean?
John woke up the next morning at 4am. He stretched and started to get out of bed. He saw Kate standing in the middle of the room and called her name. He slid out of bed and gently grabbed her arm.
Kate gasped and snapped her head toward the weight on her arm. "Dad?"
John had her sit down. "Why were you just standing there?"
Kate stammered. "I… I think I saw something."
John flipped the light on. "What do you mean?"
Kate held her hand out. She glanced at the clock on the wall and dropped her hand. "Dad, I think something is wrong."
