Chapter 30

Remy's POV

Mom just told me about the January, which has 3,462 days, doldrums. It's the letdown when the holidays are over, the winter weather gets nasty here in Trenton, there isn't much daylight, people have high heating bills, and the after-holiday credit card bills start arriving. Not a fan - zero stars.

I have a red fleece-lined hoodie to wear for my outdoor jaunts plus red boots - four of them! Mom says it's to protect my feet from the cold and the kinds of ice melt that people put down on sidewalks that are not all pet-safe. I'm stylin' - I look really good in red.

I sat in on this morning's combined meeting of the Core Team and Leadership Teams - ok, I sneaked into the meeting because Ella made crullers. Oh, yum. Mom got a blanket to put on my chair so my toenails don't puncture the leather and I don't leave cruller crumbs. I am sitting to Mom's Man's right and Mom is next to me.

My mom is in charge of the Research Department. Hector, Hal, and Cal are also on the Leadership Team with the Big 4 being the Core Team - that's Mom's Man, Bobby Brown, Lester Santos, and Tank. First order of business - Mom told everyone about her experience being paired with the new transfer from Miami, Miguel. It seems that she and Miguel were on patrol duty, with Mom doing the driving. They stopped to get a hot drink and use the restrooms at a convenience store. When they got back to the SUV, Mom glanced over the roof of the SUV, and no Miguel. When she walked around the SUV, there was Miguel on the sidewalk. Mom said that he looked a lot like my Freddy when he gets flipped over onto his back. Pobre (poor) Miguel. Mom got him turned over and onto his hands and knees so he could get up. She got him into the passenger seat and looked at the back of his head. She thought that he needed a few stitches so Mom called the Control Room to alert Bobby and to request a two-man team to get Miguel transported to Bobby and a new patrol partner for her - thank goodness it was Vince, who is from New Jersey. Mom suggested to the Core Team that they add defensive walking in addition to defensive driving for new employees, especially those from warm weather climates.

I was bored with some of the things they discussed and my cruller-filled tummy made me sleepy. Mostly I heard blah, blah, blah, followed by blah, blah, blah. So I took the opportunity to visualize my new skill that Mom and Santos taught me. It's awesome.

Mom's Man is summarizing the blah, blah, blahs, so the meeting will adjourn soon. I need to get ready to debut my new skill - I sit up on my haunches and balance my weight on my left front leg. Yep, got it. Get ready to activate the launch sequence.

Mom's Man and I made eye contact as he said "Dismissed." I saluted.
