[a/n]Up next will be a reviewer suggestion. Now an announcement: I'll get in one more, maybe two. Many will remember my unexpected absence in spring/summer 2020 due to emergency surgery [early COVID] About a month ago I was diagnosed with liver cancer, so at least this is expected. I'm scheduled for Jan23, where he'll remove about 33%. Assuming all goes well, I hope to post afterward by about Jan30.
Harry Does Different DXIII
Werewolf Equals Period
"Good afternoon, Poppy." Harry Potter ambled into the hospital wing.
The Mediwitch rushed out of her office, wand in hand "What did you do now, Potter? Vanished bones? Dragon flu?" and she launched into diagnostic spells.
"Just look at me." The boy giggled at the prodding "I walked in under my own power. Just stopped in to say I love you to quote some song I heard."
Poppy sighed "If you are truly here just to greet me I thank you. Hope you had a pleasant summer."
"Yes, thank you. I also did have something …NOT FOR ME… to talk about." He held up restraining hands "Really I mean it. Just listen to this. It's an idea I got from …funny, of all people, my relatives. I overheard Petunia and Vernon, my Aunt and Uncle, were talking about NOT having another kid." **here the young wizard shivered** "Anyway, I learned more than I ever wanted to know about girls spying on that talk. Muggles have, literally, a pill that can prevent pregnancy."
The Mediwitch interrupted with a gasp and nearly fell over "They DO NOT want children?! That is evil! How can they last any longer? As a group I mean? We have similar problems with not enough of our magical families having multiple children. That just can't continue!"
'"Well I know there's a lot more of them than us. A LOT! But, anyway, not my issue." Harry got a bit loud to close down the protest "I was thinking of it in terms of werewolves. The whole sex and pregnancy thing happens on a monthly basis. Just like with werewolves."
If anything, Pomfrey was more confused than before "One has absolutely nothing to do with the other, Mr. Potter. And trust me I have been a Healer longer than your …well you… have been alive."
"It's HOW they do it." He ignored the protest "Now, as I get it, the woman makes stuff in her body that makes it possible to get pregnant. Muggles use exactly that same stuff to somehow STOP the pregnancy. I'm not clear on how. But I know Wolfsbane is made from real expensive ingredients. Do you think? I mean, if something could be made right from a werewolf to prevent the transformation, it would be easier to get and cheaper to make?"
She was rather suddenly caught up in the idea, the gears in her mind were spinning "I would need to understand more about the analogy you've drawn. The notion of preventing pregnancy is alien to me. More practically, the help of Professor Snape; access to a willing werewolf and probably a gallon of Galleons."
"I wouldn't want Snape involved, no matter what." The teen declared "But my group has other reasons, and someone better. Andromeda Tonks can do double duty when you're working on development by covering here AND at our fully funded lab. Staffed with three werewolf volunteers."
The mediwitch almost burst out laughing, but that would be undignified "I presume your backers, Mr. Potter, are aware that only a certain young Miss Black rates higher than me by precisely THREE points in our IWC certifications."
"Wouldn't know nothing about that." Harry's tone was a little too flippant. "They didn't say why, but you can't tell Professor Dumbledore what you're working on, just that it's research." Actually, after Hermione's analysis of the new DADA teacher's speech, he thought it had something to do with her.
After an internal debate, Poppy decided "Very well, I will agree to meet and discuss the general plan." Her professional mask was hiding excitement.

"Headmaster, Deputy Headmistress" the Hogwarts Head Healer pointedly ignored the Head Inquisitor as she began to talk before the assembled students "Thank you for your indulgence. We wanted to announce a significant medical advance here, where the future is shaped, with our young people. I do not speak as a royal we, of course. I wish to introduce my partners in this project."
Delores Umbridge forced her way into the moment "Poppy, I do not believe proper procedure has been followed here. Caution must always be shown in NOT merely creating for creation's sake. And certainly ANY change in medicine cannot be made without auth - -"
"I can assure you, Madam" the mediwitch's tone chilled the Great Hall "all proper peer and Ministry review is being adhered to. Perhaps you have merely been too busy involving yourself here to be aware of my project." There was some giggling behind young hands at the public rebuke "Though calling it MY project is a misnomer. Healer Tonks has been visible here all school year and has been very involved in the research. I believe you all know former Professor Lupin. With him are Chiara Lobosca, a Hufflepuff alum, and Gerard and Abigail Grey. Gerard was a Gryffindor in the early 80s. Little Abby won't start for a few years. All three, like Remus, are werewolves."
After a squall of outrage, the High Inquisitor objected furiously "Dark creatures are banned from these hallowed halls!"
"Are you implying a …barely more than a toddler… is an evil monster, Delores?" McGonagall cut into the echo bitingly.
Dumbledore spoke for the first time "Obviously, you have everyone's attention, Poppy. Please continue."
"Lastly, you all know Mr. Harry Potter." She favored the boy with a smile "He rather showed his Slytherin side in recruiting myself to the project. And he represents the money end of the effort." Continuing, after taking no official notice of the outburst "It was pointed out that we only have wolfsbane as a treatment for lycanthropy. Can't we do, if not better, at least different."
Still interjecting herself, Umbridge said "Wolfsbane is the only tried and true method for repressing this evil." She glared at the now explained visitors "Nor did I sanction their presence. In the interests of our students I order them out!"
"Now now, Delores" the Headmaster said placatingly "Neither Poppy nor Andromeda are noted for reckless behavior. And I note, from the calendar, it is four days before full moon. Do hush."
Poppy flashed a smile and bowed "Headmaster. This, I might imagine will annoy some, but thanks to Mr. Potter's Muggle education, we researched an entirely different approach. Instead of exotic, expensive or rare ingredients, the team used the very blood that causes a werewolf's transformation to develop a treatment. The exact research procedures and formulae are …private… but the effect is startling. A tenth of the production cost for a tenth of the usefulness."
"Only Ministry personnel may- - -" Umbridge again interjected.
Andromeda Tonks cut her off, they were acquaintances of old "Oh shut up Umbitch! No wonder you never married! Right. We were seeking an actual cure, and still are. But we achieved something still remarkable. With much gratitude to our very brave volunteers. Especially our youngest." She caressed the head and cheek of the little girl.
"One of the main problems with the transformation is the extreme pain." Remus stood at a nod from both women "It pushes humanity away as our bones and muscles twist and grow. To say it hurts is a gross understatement. Even Abby did amazing." He flicked his wand causing tiny fireworks her delight.
Poppy resumed "The short term plan, with our license near approval, is to get every werewolf possible at least one dose before the next Full Moon. This to be taken the night of. That's the best we can do at the moment. Tests show that the best result comes with taking a regimen of one a night for five nights prior to the Full Moon, followed by two after."
"And how much will Hogwarts benefit from your, no doubt, excessive charge for this alleged miracle potion?" the Head Inquisitor sneered "We should, after all, you no doubt pilfered substantial supplies in this misbegotten venture."
Harry, much to his friends' surprise stood up "The company, Marauders' LP, indeed has maintained a record of each item we purchased over the last six months. This scroll is for headmaster Dumbledore, including a total. This amount was deposited to the Hogwarts vault this morning. I'll be glad to discuss a regular supply deal."
"I make no commitment" said the Headmaster as the scroll floated his way "but, Delores, we do seem to have no obvious difficulty."
Umbridge did NOT look pleased.
"A wolfsbane potion, including paying the Potioneer to brew it, costs GG10" Harry went on "the company is offering this month's Full Moon dose. ::By the way, it's in pill form, just swallow with water. Free of charge to any and all comers:: The charge will be GG1, per pill, next month. As soon as we're up to full speed, we'll be charging GG1 for the whole week of pills."
Professor Snape had been silent thus far, considering an appropriate response "I find the matter concerning, as this apparently devalues the art of potion making. I, perhaps, erred in my disdain for our High Inquisitor when she said quote Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected and prune practices that ought to be prohibited. unquote"
"All due respect, Severus" Remus began, sarcasm just barely present in his tone "we do not seek further approval, other than the upcoming results of mass distribution. This is merely our first announcement. Please, all you kids, let your parents know. Any werewolf you might know, especially. We four are all the proof you need, the stuff works."
Madam Pomfrey concluded the presentation "Thank you for your attention. And I, personally, want to thank Mr. Harry Potter for recruiting me into his organization. This radical new approach of his was just what we needed to kick us in our complacency. This is a very exciting time."
Dumbledore was about to speak but Umbridge emitted several high-pitched coughs and said "My advice to Minister Fudge will be to review this in GREAT DETAIL. No, this needs a review of …easily… a year. I would be glad to have Professor Snape on that team." And she beamed at the man who had previously been less than cooperative.
"In fact, Delores, as CEO of Marauders' Inc" Remus felt this could not have been setup better "I signed a definitive agreement with St. Mungo's to see to the matter. No other concerns? We thank everyone for their time, and Headmaster Dumbledore for his indulgence. And, not to worry, articles will post on major front pages like The Daily Prophet and, of course, The Quibbler."
