Chapter 5: Wapol the Bilk! A Country with No Name!
~At sea in the Grand Line~
As soon as they left Little Garden to head to Alabasta, something happened that made them change course to Durm Island. The Straw Hats' most reliable Navigator caught a terrible fever. So the Straw Hat Pirates were on a race against time to find a doctor who could cure Nami.
While Zoro, Sanji and Usopp were on the lookout for an island; Luffy, Vivi and Carue were in the Women's Quarter taking care of Nami. They each had a worried expression on their faces, watching Nami sweat and pant. Her fever was getting higher. If it kept this up like this Nami would surely die.
Luffy won't let that happen. She would make sure that Nami would be saved.
"Do you think Nami will make it through?" Vivi broke the silence. Her eyes never left Nami.
Luffy looked at her to see the look of doubt on her face. She knew that VIvi didn't like to see her friends she cared about suffer, making her feel helpless.
"You're worrying too much, Vivi." Luffy said, causing Vivi to turn her head to face her with surprise.
Luffy continued: "Nami may not have Devil Fruit powers like me or super strength like Zoro's swings or Sanji's kicks, but Nami's strong in her own way. She is the most skilled Navigator. She can send a full-grown man to sky-high with one punch. So in order words, Nami won't let any sickness to take her down."
Vivi blinked once and just like that, all her worries were diminished thanks to her. She nodded in agreement.
"Yes, you're right, Luffy. Nami is strong. I believe she'll make it." She said with a small smile.
"And she'll be even better when we find a doctor. She'll be as good as new." Luffy exclaimed.
She then got up from her chair and said: "I'll go on the lookout with the others. I'll have Sanji to watch over Nami in my place. Are you okay with that?"
"Not at all, I'll stay here." Vivi said.
"Quack." Carue quacked, saying that he'll help too.
Vivi giggled and said: "And Carue too."
Luffy giggled as well. She waved and left to the main deck.
~On the main deck~
Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Sanji were trying to figure out on what the heck just happened before they were surrounded by a dozen of men wearing winter coats pointing their guns at them. They didn't have time for this nonsense. They needed to get rid of them, so they could get back on the island searching. Just as things couldn't get any weirder, an overweight man with an iron jaw was standing on the railing, taking a bite of his meat from his knife. Just like a barbarian.
"Are you lowlifes really Pirates? There are only four of you. I bet they're weak." The obese man said.
Then to everyone's shock and disgust, the fat man had eaten the meat and the knife all at once. That was just plain revolting.
Once the fat man swallowed his meal, he asked: "Might as well ask then, I demand to see your Captain now."
"I'm the Captain of this ship. The name is Monkey D. Luffy." Luffy said, crossing her arms and sitting on the railing with crossed legs.
When the overweight man took notice of her, his iron jaw dropped. His eyes popped out of their sockets and turned into hearts.
To say Luffy wasn't expecting this reaction. Then he did something that surprised her.
"What the hell are you idiots doing? Why are you pointing your guns at a lady?" He said.
The men, that had surrounded Luffy, were unsure of on how to answer him back.
"Don't just stand there like statues! Put your guns down now!" He ordered his men.
"Yes, Captain!" They chorused and lowered their guns.
The fat man jumped off the railing and walked up to Luffy with a suave smirk, combing his hair with his hand. Once he reached her, he took hold of her small hand and he... started to kiss it for a long time... wetly.
Usopp made a belching sound, feeling his stomach overturn.
Zoro was in the Crow's Nest, watching the most outrageous display from above. His teeth clenched together. His hands were holding onto the railing, breaking the wood in his hold.
Sanji was on fire, literally. His cigarette burned to ashes.
Luffy was no better than them. Her face was marred with revolt. She felt every ounce of hatred sent out to that fat Pirate. Once he finally removed her hand, she looked at it.
It was all wet. She desperately wanted to shower. Maybe three times to wash this off.
"I'm sorry about my men. They have a hard time following my orders." The fat man said.
Luffy ignored him as she was too busy trying to wipe away that disgusting slop off of her hand. The sloppily fat hippo had violated it.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Wapol, Captain of the Wapol Pirates. Allow me to make up for my men's stupidity." He said as charming as possible.
"If you're gonna kiss me again, I'll rip your mouth right off your face." She growled bitterly and threateningly.
"Even better. I'm planning to take you and make you my Queen." The fat man said.
A silence fell over everyone on the Going Merry's main deck as what Wapol just had said, had sunken in and they could comprehend what it meant.
"EEEEEHHHHHHHH!" The whole crew screamed, and that shook the Going Merry with it.
"THE FAT HIPPO SAID WHAT?" Usopp yelled as his jaw dropped to the floor.
"I'LL TEAR OFF YOUR HIDE!" Zoro growled. His face looked like a shark, making the man surrounding him quiver.
"IF YOU THINK I'LL JUST LET YOU TAKE LUFFY-CHAN LIKE SOME BARBARIAN, I'LL ROAST YOU ALIVE!" Sanji shouted as his flame started to explode and swirled around him angrily.
Wapol paid them no attention as his eyes were tightly locked on Luffy.
"ARE YOU STUPID OR SOMETHING? I'LL NEVER BE YOUR QUEEN! I'm planning on becoming the Queen of the Pirates, not to become your Queen." Luffy said annoyed.
"Queen of the Pirates?" Wapol laughed as if she made a joke. "That means you'll have to survive the Grand Line, if you want to be the Queen of the Pirates. That sounds pretty dangerous for a beautiful maiden like yourself."
He then put his arm around her petite waist. He pulled her close to him.
This only made our favoured Swordsman and Cook triple their glare and then snapped.
"That's it!" They both chorused as they launched.
Zoro took the men out that had surrounded him. With his amazing speed, he ran on the mast without falling and sliced some other men once he reached the deck with his cool skills.
Sanji kicked the chins, stomach, back, neck, shoulder... you name it... till they fell like flies.
Usopp... well, he was just hiding.
Luffy saw her Nakama having fun beating the living daylights out of them. She was missing the action, but the damn hippo didn't want to let her go.
"GET OFF OF ME! YOU DAMN COW! I NEED TO HELP MY NAKAMA!" She yelled demanding strongly.
"Forget about those losers. Join me and I'll make your life worthwhile." Wapol said as his eyes shifted to Luffy's softly rounded butt. He had a kinky idea of touching them.
Everything happened in slow motion. One minute Wapol's arm was wrapped around Luffy's waist. The next thing that happened, was that he glided his hand to his target. Once he reached one of her soft plump butt cheeks, he groped it.
Wapol had just groped Luffy's butt! Hard.
All became silent. It was a very deadly cold silence. Not like the cold winter weather. It was like the chill of death you would feel when the Grim Reaper came to take someone's soul.
Zoro, Sanji and Usopp were all tensed, but not out of fear. The way their oblivious, happy-go-lucky Captain was heavily silent about all this.
Vivi had come out of the Women's Quarter to the deck to see what the commotion was all about. She also saw the iron-jawed man groping Luffy and was repulsed by that pervert.
Wapol was confused as the pretty girl didn't react at all. He did feel a cold chill run down his spine. He looked up to look at her and began to regret what he had done. Luffy was looking at him with the scariest and fiercest face, he had ever seen. That made him wet his pants.
"GUM GUM BAAAZOOOKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" She stroked Wapol head-on, sending him flying sky-high till he was nothing but a speck in the sky.
Wapol's band of Pirates were stunned beyond belief that their fearless Captain had just been blasted off by a puny angry girl. They then turned their gaze at Straw Hat Luffy. They froze when they saw that she was looking at them with the same menacing look on her face. They could clearly see a visible dark aura leaking out of her.
Luffy continued to glare at them and said in an icy tone: "Get lost!"
Those two words were enough to make the band of Pirates squeal like a couple of banshees. They all high-tailed out of here to where Wapol was sent to.
Everyone watched wide-eyed as the ship disappeared for good. They turned to see that Luffy was still angry. She began furiously stomping her way back to the Women's Quarter.
Usopp took that moment to speak.
"L-Luffy, are... are you UWAHHHH!" Usopp shrieked the moment when Luffy turned her head with the same look that she gave the Wapol Pirates.
"I. Don't. Want. To. Talk About. It." She said eerily and scary.
Usopp sealed his mouth tight, so he wouldn't provoke her.
Zoro and Sanji were completely taken aback by surprise to see this new side of Luffy.
Luffy proceeded to walk till she reached the door. She opened and closed it hard with a bang.
Vivi watched the whole thing, but was fazed by Luffy's fury. On the contrary, she was as mad as Luffy was.
"Good for her that she blashed that – that – that pervert to the sky! How dare he harass her like that? Men are nothing but savages." She said, before 'humph'-ing and then followed Luffy to the Women's Quarter.
Once Vivi was out of sight, it left the three male members of the Straw Hat Pirates bewildered behind to their thoughts. They stayed silent for a while before it was broken by Usopp.
"Did you see the l- look on her face? She was ten times scarier than Nami." He said with shaking legs.
Zoro and Sanji couldn't help but nod in agreement. Therefore, the male Straw Hats had just written a new rule in their rulebook.
Rule #84: if you value your very life, please for the love of all good things, do not grope Luffy's butt. Unless you have a death wish.
~On Drum Island~
The next day, the Straw Hat Pirates have finally found Drum Island. The entire landscape was covered in snow. The mountains were shaped like a drum. That got the island its name.
As they were admiring the winter island, they were suddenly surrounded by people pointing their guns at them. They tried to reason with them that they didn't mean any harm. That they were here to find a doctor for their friend, but none of them believed them.
They were running out of ideas and gasped when they saw Vivi bow down on the deck, begging them to believe what they were saying was the truth.
Luffy watched astonished to see a Princess bow down to a civilian. That took a lot of guts to take such action. So she also joined bowing down to them, begging them to help their sick friend.
The group's leader stood at the front watching as the two begged. He was convinced that these pirates were telling the truth and let them in. They were glad to let them in.
Luffy ordered Zoro to guard the ship with Carue, while they looked for a doctor.
Zoro wanted to protest it, but he couldn't since this was an order from his Captain. He had no choice but to agree. It was not because he was worried or anything, but because of the Love Cook was going with her. At least Usopp and Vivi were with her. Right?
The man's name was Dalton. He was the leader of this village called Bighorn, where he was leading them to. He apologized on the people's behalf for their hostility. This country had been edgy. It had no king nor a name.
This baffled the Straw Hats. When they were about to ask him why, they saw the look on his face. They decided not to press on him.
Dalton had welcomed them to his house and showed them where his bed was. They lay Nami on his bed to rest. Her fever was getting worse every minute.
Dalton had never seen this kind of fever before, but he could tell it was fatal.
Vivi asked him to where they could find a doctor.
When Dalton answered, that weirded them out. He told them that this country had only one doctor and was called a witch. She was a one-hundred-and-forty-year-old woman.
"A hundred and forty-year-old witch!" Vivi exclaimed.
"A country with only one doctor! What kind of country is this anyway?" Sanji asked.
"We can ask questions later. Right now, Nami is getting sicker and sicker. So please, tell us where this witch of yours is?" Luffy asked in a hurry. She didn't know how long Nami could take much more of this.
Dalton looked into her eyes and saw there was both determination and a bit of worry in them, unlike he had seen from a Pirate but... different.
He nodded to her and explained: "Do you see the mountains outside that window?"
"Yeah, those are freaking' huge." Luffy replied as she turned to see through the window.
A mountain that was shaped like a drum seemed to be the tallest mountain she had ever seen.
"Those mountains are the Drum Rockies. You can see a castle atop the peak of the tallest central mountain. This is where the witch, the solo doctor in our country, Dr Kureha lives in that castle." He continued.
"What!" Sanji said baffled.
"Of all the places, why does she live all the way up there? Fine, just call her to come down here. This is an emergency." He said.
"I'm afraid there is no way of contacting her." Dalton stated.
"What!" They all yelled together.
"But then what happens when the people get injured or sick?" Vivi asked.
"She comes down the mountain of her own free will. She searches for patients, treats them...and then takes whatever she wants from their homes as payment before leaving again." Dalton explained.
"Sounds like one mean old hag." Usopp commented.
"I think she sounds more like a Pirate than mean." Luffy said.
"But how does such an old woman get down from that mountain?" Vivi asked again.
"I heard a rumour from people, a rather strange rumour. Several witnesses had said that they saw – on a moonlit night – that she took to the sky in a sleigh and rode down. That is one of the reasons they call her a witch. They also said that a strange creature came with her. The likes they've never seen before. Even though she is the only doctor this country has, she isn't very social to people. So I'm afraid you'll have to wait till she comes down from that mountain tomorrow." Dalton explained.
Sanji, Vivi, Luffy and Usopp weren't quite happy to hear that.
Nami couldn't wait for tomorrow. She needed to see a doctor now. Before it was too late.
Luffy kept turning her head between Nami and the mountain. She finally made her decision.
"Then we'll climb up the mountain and take Nami to the witch ourselves." She said.
"WHAT!" Sanji, Vivi and Usopp shouted shocked.
Dalton was startled by the girl.
"Have you lost your mind, Luffy? The minute Nami walks out of that door, she'll die!" Usopp said.
"But staying and waiting for a witch to show up, Nami will die." She replied.
"That may be, but look at that mountain and the weather Nami will not take this much stress. This is a huge risk. We're talking about someone's life, Luffy. You can't risk someone's life like that" Vivi said trying to reason.
"I'M NOT RISKING HER LIFE! I'M SAVING HER LIFE!" Luffy shouted.
The whole house was silent.
"Listen, as Captain of this crew, I would never put my Nakama at such risk. I care for my Nakama like family. Nami is a valuable member of this family. She was the one to guide us to the Grand Line through thick and thin. She's the one who keeps us all together without getting lost." She said placing her hand on her heart. "So that's why I'll do whatever is in my power to save my Nakama from harm. I'LL BE THE ONE TO PUT MY LIFE AT RISK TO SAVE MY NAKAMA."
Vivi gasped at seeing such a fierce look in Luffy's eyes. It was like fire. She felt ashamed for what she had said before. She started to remember that Luffy almost put her life on the line at Little Garden to save her, Nami and Zoro when they were trapped in Mr Three's Wax House to be turned into wax statues. She faced him all by herself.
Vivi should've known better than this. Luffy was such a courageous girl. Her Nakama was as courageous as her like equals and cared for each other, that they wouldn't only die for each other but to live for their sake.
Usopp and Sanji each had felt the same way.
"I'm sorry, Luffy. I..." Vivi began before she was interrupted by Luffy.
"You don't need to apologize to me, Vivi. You care for Nami too and I understand your reason." She said grinning, assuring the Princess.
Vivi smiled in return.
"Hey, Dalton guy, can you tell us which path we should take?" Luffy asked Dalton, who admired the little girl's big heart.
"If you take the path through the forest, it will lead you straight to the Drum Rockies. But you need to watch out for the Lapins." He suggested with a warning.
"Lapins?" Luffy tilted her head in confusion.
"They are big, white, carnivorous and intelligent snow rabbits." Dalton said, making everyone look sceptically at him.
"Don't worry, we'll be careful. Sanji!" Luffy reassured.
Sanji looked up when his beloved Captain called him.
"You'll be coming with me. Usopp and Vivi, you guys stay here just in case if the witch happens to come by here. You can tell her." She said getting into Captain mode.
Vivi and Usopp nodded.
"Good, next stop is the Drum Rockies." She declared.
~In the forest~
Sanji was running alongside Luffy, who was carrying Nami on her back. They both shivered as the cold air swept around them, but continued on.
Sanji took the moment to say something.
"Hey Luffy-chan." He said.
"Yeah?" She said.
"I just want to say that... the speech you made was... quite inspiring. You sure have a way with words." Sanji complimented her.
"Huh?" She said confused.
"What I'm trying to say, is that... your words have a way of saving us, to keep us from falling apart. You're like gravity that keeps us from floating away. And to say..." He said flashing her his smile. "You truly are amazing."
With that, he finished what he wanted to say.
Luffy was stunned and started to blush by his words.
"Th... thanks Sanji." Luffy stuttered, before giggling sweetly.
"Oh Luffy-chan, your giggles are like music to my ears." He said with hearts in his eye.
~On the Going Merry~
Back on the ship, Zoro was meditating on te soft snow ground with no shirt on. Suddenly his meditation broke and frowned for some reason.
"Why do I've a feeling that I want to gouge the Love Cook inside out?" He muttered to himself.
He shrugged it off. Probably just hallucinating things and he went back to meditating.
~In Bighorn~
When Dalton asked Usopp and Vivi to come back inside his house to warm up, they declined saying they would remain outside waiting for their return.
Dalton smiled at their loyalty, and he joined them to wait too.
As the wind howled, more snow covered the ground and thickened even further.
Dalton fixed his gaze on the Drum Castle. He started to reminisce about the old days. He then turned his gaze to Usopp and Vivi and thought they deserved to know a small part of the truth.
"A long time ago..." He said, catching the attention of Usopp and Vivi. This country had many doctors, but they were all gone. They were all extremely skilled doctors. In truth, they were said to provide the highest quality medical care possible."
"Then... what happened to them?" Vivi asked.
"This country – not less than a year ago – was completely ravaged... at the hands of a pirate crew." Dalton said, earning gasps.
"Wait! The whole country?" Usopp said in disbelief. He couldn't believe that there were Pirates strong enough to take down a whole country.
"That explains it! Now I know why those people acted that way when we arrived." Vivi said.
"That's right. The citizens are not yet ready to hear the word 'pirate' again. You must excuse their behaviour. A Pirate crew with only five members managed to do all this. They were led by their Captain named, beyond anything you've ever seen, have ravaged the entire country." Dalton explained.
"A five-pirate crew! You can't be serious!" Vivi cringed.
"Blackbeard." Usopp muttered.
"However, despite what had happened, some would say it was good for this country." Dalton uttered.
"How could you say that?" Usopp said shocked.
Vivi angrily stomped her foot.
"That's right! How could you say so quietly when they attacked your home." She said hotly.
Dalton smiled sadly.
This took Vivi and Usopp aback by surprise.
"Thank you, but while that is true. Until that time this country used to have a king, but he was a tyrant king. He caused misery to his people. His name I'll forever curse for what he had done." He said. His face twisted in fury.
He uttered the name of the country's king: "His name was... Wapol."
Upon hearing the name, Usopp and Vivi flinched. They remembered that man, who attacked them yesterday, was a king.
Dalton noticed their behaviour.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"It's just that... we met Wapol." Vivi said.
"Yeah, he attacked our ship and... uhm." Usopp began, but flinched while Dalton stared at him.
"And... what happened?" He asked curiously.
"Trust me, you don't want to know." Usopp said with a frightened look, like he had seen something monstrous.
Dalton raised an eyebrow, but didn't press the long-nosed kid.
"So you said you've met him. Are you sure?" He said.
"Yes, he came and attacked our ship yesterday on our way here. He said that he was a pirate, not a king." Vivi exclaimed.
"He poses himself as a pirate as a cover-up. He was drifting out to sea, finding his way back here... and he..." Dalton slowly said, balling his hands into fists.
"He drifted off to sea because he and his army ran away like cowards. He abandoned his own country in the hands of Blackbeard. He was the first to flee to the ocean and escape. Because of him, our country had fallen to despair." He said bitterly.
Vivi trembled in fury. That yellow-belly coward had ditched his country to save himself.
"THIS ISN'T HOW A KING SHOULD ACT! What kind of king abandons his own people." Vivi strongly.
"Vivi." Usopp whispered.
"I understand your feelings but..." Dalton said. "Ever since the tyrant king had left his Kingdom, the remaining citizens could finally rebuild our country anew. If Wapol returns and takes over again, our country will perish. We can't let this happen after we have worked so hard to rebuild it. So we'll do whatever it takes to prevent it from happening for the sake of the country's must not set foot on our country."
Dalton was so fierce that he'd make sure that the tyrant wouldn't return.
However, Dalton and the Straw Hats were unaware that Wapol and his gang were slowly closing in on Drum Island.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Please review.
