Late at night, Silas was sitting on the edge of a hilltop. Leg over the other and arm resting on his knee, he looked forward with a solemn expression. Karakura Town's lights were far more extravagant at night. The only place he could compare it to was a modern version of New York, only with smaller buildings and more space to walk.
"Is what you told me true?" Uryū asked, standing behind him.
"Yeah…"
Silas had relayed crucial information to Uryū that would more or less come in handy for the days to come. Because no animosity unfolded between Ichigo and him, there was no desire for Uryū to use any Hollow bait. This bait was used in the story to attract a plethora of Hollows to Karakura Town during a fight between the two. Now this event was not going to happen.
Undoubtedly, Aizen would make revisions to his plans since he sent a Menos Grande to be lured in. Even if Silas convinced Uryū to use it on his behalf, there was no telling what would happen. This is where Silas lacked: he couldn't tell what Aizen was thinking or if the Hōgyoku would still respond to everyone's desires. Considering that his own wish was to return to earth, he honestly didn't think the Hōgyoku could fulfill a wish like that. Whatever the case was, he knew one thing for certain: Aizen was still going after it.
Silas stood up and popped a soul candy in his mouth. Upon turning into a Soul Reaper, he sensed an even greater distance to ensure that there was nothing suspicious around. The reason he had chosen such a faraway place was because of its altitude. Hardly any insects, like flies, could thrive here. It was also late at night, and he had managed to sneak out without Rukia or anyone else noticing.
As far as Silas was concerned, Aizen should not be monitoring him. It wasn't certain, but he was willing to take the risk.
His body left the area so as to return home. As Uryū watched it, he pulled out the Quincy cross wrapped around his wrist. An ethereal bow made out of blue, radiant spirit particles was then formed for him to wield. This was known as the "spirit bow", a typical weapon most Quincies used. By collecting the spirit particles in the air, they could also form arrows to fire.
"Are you sure this is a great idea?" Uryū asked, preparing himself.
"The fact of the matter is, you're weak…"
Uryū comically found that remark insulting. He stomped on the ground, claiming he wasn't going to hold back now. Pulling back his bow, a spirit arrow formed and then fired. Silas moved his head by only a few inches to dodge, shocking Uryū.
"Did you forget I know all about how you fight?" Silas taunted. Those words couldn't be more honest. One of the most skilled characters in Bleach was Uryū Ishida. He had an array of ways to fight his opponents, being precise with every move he made while having the potential to outclass even the king of Quincies. Silas knew that better than anyone. Otherwise, he wouldn't be out here training him.
Uryū saw him moderately moving forward, so he quickly formed another arrow. Before Uryū could even pull the arrow back, Silas had suddenly closed the distance. "You're far too slow." At those words, he kneed him in the belly and pushed him to the side by his head.
Recuperating, Uryū asked where he had learned to move like that. Silas, in an uninterested tone, said, "Most Soul Reapers can learn it. They call it the 'flash step', and Quincies can learn something better."
"Better…?"
In truth, Silas hadn't closed the distance with flash step; he had used the Hollowed version, "sonído", a technique that allowed the user to move faster than the eye could follow—something he learned from Zangetsu. Its Quincy counterpart was known as "pure flying step".
"Uryū, like I said before, if you wanna help, you're gonna need to prove it to me."
Uryū confidently stood up, willing to grow stronger. Unimpressed, Silas unsheathed his sword and threw it at him. Uryū managed to dodge until he noticed a cloth extending from the hilt. Silas reeled back his weapon, causing the blade to cut Uryū's shoulder!
Catching his weapon, he then ran forward. Uryū ignored his wound and quickly fired an arrow, to which Silas side-stepped to dodge. Upon closing the distance, he slashed downward. Uryū dove to the side, barely dodging it. Any slower, and both his glasses and face would have been cut.
"That was just one," Silas said. He quickly aimed another slash, which Uryū narrowly dodged again. Several more swipes of his weapon occurred, with Uryū being hit a couple times. Once Uryū had managed to widen the distance, he sent two arrows into the sky. Silas watched as they curved slightly to aim at him on the ground.
It only took two mere side-steps to successfully evade both of them. Yet by the time he looked, another arrow had already been fired. He purposefully let it hit him, causing debris to form o impact. Once it cleared, Uryū was taken aback that his attack barely scratched through Silas's Soul Reaper outfit.
"Now you see just how weak you are?"
When Uryū thought it would be pointless to try and attack further, he suddenly noticed the size of his spirit bow gradually increasing. All those cuts Silas landed weren't just to put Uryū in harm's way; they were for Silas to release his spiritual pressure for Uryū to absorb into his bow. Upon understanding Silas's motives, sweat dripped from Uryū's face. Silas stood straight, his eyes narrowed, knowing exactly what Uryū was thinking.
There was a brief silence. Uryū finally stood back up. He closed his eyes to concentrate. With each second that passed, the length of his spirit bow continued to increase until it was twice his size! With a look of determination, he first adjusted his glasses before reeling his bow back, saying, "Ichigo, you're one amazing guy."
