Much like the day prior, Sera was suddenly awoken by a loud whistle blown by Ruby. The amnesiac groaned and put covered her ears with her pillow to get a reprieve from the ear-piercing sound.
"Wake up, lazy butt!" a high-pitched voice said from above her. Sera turned her head slightly to see her enthusiastic leader standing above her, whistle in hand.
"Why…" Sera groaned.
"We have team building exercises to do! So, let's get to it!" she smiled broadly.
"No…" the amnesiac rolled over and covered her head.
Then the covers were yanked off of her, and she was forced to get up. Sera unsteadily got to her feet, her shoulders slumping.
"What are we doing again?" Yang groaned.
"Team building!"
"It's the weekend, why are we up so early?" Blake yawned with bags under her eyes.
"Where's the enthusiasm?!" Ruby demanded. "If we're going to be a team, we have to get to know one another!"
"That can happen organically," Yang replied.
"It's organically happening right now!" the young team leader stomped her foot.
"Can it organically happen like, tomorrow?" Sera yawned and fixed the strap of her tank top.
"Nope!"
"Fine," Weiss groaned and swung her legs over her bunk. "What are we doing?"
"I'm glad you asked!" Ruby put her hands on her hips. "We're going to play a game!" she grinned.
Everyone else groaned in response.
"Seriously? What are we, eight?" Weiss put her face into her open palm.
"What else do you suggest?!" Ruby stomped her foot again, her cheeks puffing out.
"I dunno, we could just talk?" Blake said.
"Fine," Ruby groaned. "We'll do it the boring way."
"The efficient way, you mean?" Weiss said.
"Whatever," Ruby mumbled and crossed her arms. "The boring way."
Half an hour later, they were dressed in their usual outfits and sitting in a circle in the dorm room. Sera decided to not wear her leather coat, since they were still in their room. Instead, she just wore a violet sleeveless crop top with her combat pants.
"Okay, so, what now?" she asked, crossing her legs crisscross applesauce.
"Well, we can start with our names!" Ruby proclaimed.
"We already know each other's names," Yang raised her hand.
"Can we just do it?" Ruby groaned. "Our names and tell a bit about ourselves? Right, Blake?" the team leader nudged the mysterious girl. Blake said nothing, like usual.
"Fine," Weiss shook her head. That seemed to be her favorite word, from what Sera could tell.
"I'll go first!" Ruby said happily, unsurprisingly. She could make the most of anything.
"Ruby Rose! Scythe-wielder extraordinaire and future huntress that'll save the world!" she grinned. "And, uh… I like cookies! Chocolate chip, yessir!"
"Uh… okay. I'll go next, I guess," Yang rubbed the back of her head. "Yang Xiao Long. Ruby's older sister, if you didn't already know."
"We knew," Weiss said.
"That settles that," Yang crossed her arms. "Well, there's not much to tell, really. I'm here at Beacon with the same goal as everyone else—to become a huntress. But I'm also a thrill-seeker, so my reasons might be a bit different," she chuckled. What she didn't reveal was that she was also searching for her missing mother, Raven.
"Weiss Schnee," Weiss stood and did a polite curtsy. "Heiress to the Schnee Dust Company." Then she sat back down, as if that told them all they needed to know. In a way, it did, but Sera still wasn't sure who she was. What was the Schnee Dust Company? She'd have to look it up later, like she's been doing with everything else she wasn't sure about.
"Is that it? No interesting facts or anything?" Ruby asked.
"That's it for now," Weiss checked her nails.
"You're no fun," Ruby crossed her arms. "Blake?"
After a moment, Blake sighed. "My name is Blake Belladonna. My semblance allows me to leave behind a 'shadow clone' of myself to take a hit in my place or distract an enemy, plus a few other abilities."
"That's it?" Yang asked.
"It was more than what Weiss had to say," Blake shrugged.
"Speaking of semblances, how does yours even work, Weiss?" Sera asked the heiress.
Weiss spun two fingers in a circle until a white glyph appeared in the air above her. She seemed to take pride in the act. "My semblance has a multitude of uses, really. You saw some of it during initiation in the Emerald Forest. I can use it to amplify my Dust attacks from my sword, someone can run along them up a wall like Ruby did, and I can even launch myself and others at high speeds. Plus a few more minor abilities."
"Wow," Yang said.
"That's a complex semblance," Blake agreed.
"Yeah, my semblance just makes me punch harder, basically," the blond said.
"That sounds pretty neat, actually," Sera said to both Weiss and Yang.
"What about you, Sera?" Ruby asked.
"Me?" her heart skipped a beat. "I, uh… don't actually know what my semblance is."
"Wait, what?" Weiss asked. "You got into Beacon without even knowing what your semblance is?"
"Yes?" Sera said uncertainly. It wasn't far from the truth. "I mean, Jaune doesn't know what his semblance is either, right?"
"That's impressive, if it's true," Blake said. Her eyes seemed to bore into the amnesiac, and Sera had a feeling she knew that she wasn't being entirely truthful.
"Why wouldn't it be true?" Ruby asked.
"I dunno," Blake said. "Some people tend to hide things about themselves if they think it benefits them."
"Are you talking about me, or yourself?" Sera's eyes narrowed. She wasn't sure what Blake was getting at, but she wasn't about to be psyched out by her. Besides, what she said was true enough. Blake was just as guilty of what she'd inadvertently accused Sera of.
"Cool it, you two," Yang warned. "You don't have to tell your whole life's story right now or something, this is just us getting to know each other."
"Moving on," Ruby said, trying to change the subject. "Since it's her turn anyway—Sera?"
"I guess so," the amnesiac suppressed a sigh. "Name's Sera Calypso, I don't know what my semblance is. And uh… I have this tattoo," she showed them her arm.
"But we knew that already," Ruby looked disappointed.
"Well, maybe except for the name," Weiss noted.
"The tattoo is pretty cool though," Yang complimented.
"What else can I say? I'm here to be a huntress, just like the rest of you," she shrugged. In truth, there wasn't much else she could say. During the time they spend together now, the five of them would learn about each other, but she was learning about herself, too.
"That's good enough, I guess," Ruby's shoulders slumped.
"I wish I had more to tell," the amnesiac rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. "I'm just not that interesting!" she forced a laugh.
. . .
Blake knew a liar when she saw one. She's lived most of her life lying and stealing to survive, and she became very good at recognizing a liar. Especially one as unskilled at it as her additional teammate.
However, Sera has shown no signs that she should not be trusted, other than her poorly executed white lies, so she didn't tell her team about it. Plus, she didn't even know if she could trust them, either… Especially Weiss.
It wasn't their fault; it's just how Blake was. Because of her life on the run with the White Fang, she's learned to not trust anyone but herself.
But if she was going to be on a team, she would have to learn how to trust others.
Blake watched Sera from atop her bunk. The white-haired girl was mindlessly tapping on her scroll, playing a game from the looks of it.
'There's got to be something more to her,' Blake thought to herself. Sera laughed triumphantly at her game and kicked her legs happily. 'Or maybe I'm overthinking it,' Blake sighed and picked up her book. 'She might not be like him.'
"Psst," a voice said from beside her, and Blake jolted so hard she threw her book into the air.
"Whoa, it's just me!" Yang said. She was peeking her head up from her bunk below Blake's. "Are you okay? You've been glaring at Sera pretty hard."
"Huh?" she blinked. Was she that obvious? "No, I'm fine. I was just—"
"You don't trust her, do you? Because of earlier, I mean," Yang whispered.
"I'm not sure. There's something off about her, I just don't know what," Blake replied.
"Should we confront her about it?"
"No," she shook her head. "That might just make her distrust us. In fact, let's just keep this between us. I don't exactly trust Weiss, either, and no offense, but Ruby doesn't seem like the type to keep secrets."
"…You're not wrong," Yang said. "Why don't you trust Weiss?"
"Personal reasons," Blake replied, her gaze full of hidden wrath towards the Schnee Dust Company.
"Fine, then," Yang said. "What now?"
"I'm just going to watch her closer from now to see if she actually does reveal anything," Blake said, and they both turned their heads to see their teammate toss her scroll to the side and cross her arms angrily. The screen read: GAME OVER. Then Sera picked up the scroll again and kept playing, mumbling about dumb videogames.
"Absolutely diabolical," Yang murmured.
"Shut up," Blake groaned. 'I know she's hiding something,' she thought to herself, peering down at Sera. 'But what is it…?'
