Jamie sat in a rocking chair with a very fussy Cora. She was lying up against his shoulder trying her best to get comfortable.

"Dada!"

Putting a hand on her back, Jamie slowly began rubbing it.

"Shh. It's ok baby girl. Daddy is right here. I'm right here. Try to go to sleep, ok? Daddy is right here. Shh…"

Jamie's eyes roamed over to the monitors Cora was attached to and shook his head. He knew how uncomfortable she was. He looked to a nurse whose name was Megan.

"Her heart rate is getting too high because she's upset. She's burning up. We'll need to get another temp on her."

Cora got fussier and clung to Jamie, trying to hide her head in his neck.

"Dada!"

Jamie felt his heart break for his baby girl. She kept crying as he set her down in the heated crib. The nurse Megan looked Jamie in the eye.

"You might want to hold her. This'll be quick."

Jamie felt his heart break a little more as he watched Megan take Cora's temperature.

"Almost done baby girl. Daddy is right here. Mommy is coming right back to be with us."

Jamie looked up at Megan as she sighed. She showed him the temp.

"104.6. We've got to get her cooled down again. The lab is backed up. I'll see what I can do to get them to put a rush on her blood work. Doctor Clarkson also wants another urine and stool sample from her as well."

Jamie nodded and saw Doctor Clarkson come back into the room.

"How's she doing Jamie?"

Sighing, Jamie gave her an apprehensive look.

"She's spiking a fever again. 104.6. Need to cool her down again. Do we have any washcloths stocked in here?"

Megan nodded and opened up a drawer to show him.

"Here Doctor Reagan. I'll soak them in some cool water and wring them out."

Jamie gingerly took Cora back into his arms and lie her against his shoulder, sitting back down in the rocking chair, slowly rocking back and forth.

"It's ok baby girl. We're going to get something to make it so you don't feel some uncomfortable ok? I know. Daddy's right here."

Jamie was worried about this whole situation. But he and Eddie could get through this together. Their baby girl would be just fine. Eddie came back into the room and saw her fussy and uncomfortable little girl in the arms of her husband being rocked back and forth in a rocking chair. She got a look of fear in her eyes as she watched Jamie rocking their restless daughter back and forth in the rocking chair.

"She's got a fever again, doesn't she?"

Jamie nodded and nuzzled his cheek against his baby girl's very warm head.

"Yes. Might not be a bad idea to keep breastfeeding her for now. It'll boost her immune system and bring down her fever. Megan and I were going to cool her down with some cool washcloths."

Eddie nodded and lowered herself into the rocking chair next to Jamie. She then motioned for him to hand Cora over to her. Jamie was careful as he set Cora in Eddie's arms. He helped Eddie get situated and let out a quiet sigh, watching Cora and running a hand through her normally downy soft dark hair. But today it was matted down with sweat from the fever that was raging through her tiny body. Megan began her onslaught of questions for Eddie.

"Has she been having any trouble nursing?"

Eddie shook her head and kept her attention on Cora.

"No. Not that I've seen. She has no trouble eating."

Megan continued with her questions.

"Has she had any trouble catching her breath?"

Jamie could see Eddie was getting irritated with Megan, so he stepped in.

"She's been doing pretty well actually. I've been monitoring her just in case there are any changes."

Megan nodded her head and helped Jamie place the cool washcloth against Cora's tiny head. Cora moved slightly but kept eating. Her unhappy fussing while eating turned into calming coos. Eddie was happy to spend this time with her daughter. She would be alright.

"The two of you can relax. Cora has a cold. Your typical run of the mill cold. It started out as the flu. That explains the fever at least. I suggest giving her lots of fluids and to keep breastfeeding her if you feel it would benefit her."

Eddie looked Doctor Clarkson in the eye.

"So, you're saying all those tests you did on her, and she just has a cold?"

Doctor Clarkson nodded her head and spread her hands.

"Yes. She could've gotten it from anywhere. I'd like to keep her here one more night just to make sure her fever doesn't come back. Even though her fever broke."

Jamie squeezed Eddie's hand and let out a giant sigh of relief.

"You're sure it's just a cold Caia?"

Doctor Clarkson nodded her head.

"Yes. We tested her blood for all the common childhood illnesses, but she had none of the symptoms for any of them. She'll need lots of rest, fluids, some solids if she asks for it and time."

Jamie shook hands with Doctor Clarkson.

"Thanks Caia. I appreciate everything you've done for us. For Cora."

Eddie smiled and kissed Cora's forehead.

"You here that sweet girl? You're going to be ok. We're going to get you home and into your own bed tomorrow."

Jamie smiled; he loved seeing both his girls bonding. He was the luckiest man in New York City.
