There she was again sitting at the edge of the well. Staring listlessly at the sky above her wondering what to do now. Had she finally had enough? Had Inuyasha finally pushed her away, was he really done with her and everything they had been trying to work towards? She sat at the well and cried for hours wondering what to do.
Although now her tears were long gone she still didn't know what to do. Should she go home and continue her life where she left off. She had wasted so much of her time here in the feudal era would it still be worth going home and trying to make a life for herself?
As she sat there contemplating everything the wind grew restless and the day began to shift into night. Even though the wind started to chill she still made no attempt to move from where she was sitting. Eventually she would need to figure out what she was going to do, but she felt empty inside. Inuyasha had taken up so much of her life already.
She had devoted herself to him, she gave up everything for him. She said goodbye to her family and she had dropped out of school for "homeschooling". How much more of this was she willing to take. His words still rang clear in her head, thinking back to earlier in the day made her want to cry again.
"Why are you so slow?!" Was yelled in her direction.
"Inuyasha please don't yell, I am going as fast as I can." I said back softly. Earlier in the day Kagome had found a small hill that was covered in some medicinal herbs that she thought were useful, and as she was picking them she had stepped on some loose rocks causing her to lose footing resulting in a pretty nasty sprain in her left ankle.
"Don't give me excuses! It's your own stupid fault that you thought that we would need those stupid fucking plants!" Inuyasha screamed yet again.
"Inuyasha, cut her some slack. She was trying to be helpful by getting us some herbs that can help if any of us get injured." Sango said, sounding rather exasperated.
"It's almost time for lunch. Why don't we take a break? Maybe some food will help calm everyone down." Miroku suggested. Kagome was thankful that he was trying to get Inuyasha to take a break she needed desperately to get off her feet. The throbbing in her ankle had yet to subside, as she walked it continuously got worse.
"Whatever." Inuyasha grumbled as he sat himself on the ground underneath a nearby tree.
"Kagome, would you mind helping me get some firewood?" Sango asked Kagome before she had the chance to sit down.
"Yeah sure I wouldn't mind."
"Yeah like she'll be of any help, she's fucking useless aside from being a jewel detector." Inuyahsa said while looking in Sango's direction. "She can't ever do anything without help. She can't protect herself, she can't do simple fucking tasks she is a burden."
"Inuyasha that's enough!" Miroku yelled before anyone could say anything. Kagome just stood there in disbelief. Had she really been that much of a burden throughout their journey. She tried to help as best as she could.
She knew she wasn't always the best at everything but she tried her best to help if she could. Yes she wasn't ever taught to fight, and yes she wasn't very knowledgeable about most things in this era but she was from the future.
"No it's not enough! If it weren't for the fact that she is the only one out of all of us that is able to detect the jewel shards I would have already left her behind or let her die already!" He yelled as he stood up.
"Inuyasha stop it! You're not being nice to Kagome! She tries her best, leave her alone!" Shippo yelled. "She is a kind person and does everything she can for us!"
"She does everything she can for us? If that's so then why is she so pathetic?! Why is she always getting hurt or lost? Why is it that she can't do simple tasks? She is a fucking idiot who can't do anything but rely on others to do all of the work because she is a lazy uneducated bitch!" Inuyasha yelled. He had yelled so loudly that it had scared all of the birds in the area causing them to fly away in a panic.
Yet again Kagome stood in the same spot in shock. Tears slowly began to well in her eyes. Throughout all of their troubles had she really only been a burden to them all? Was she really useless and uneducated?
She thought she was being useful, was she really only relying on the others for everything. Thinking back to all of the things that the group had faced she pondered whether or not she really was a problem. Yes she was often in trouble when problems would arise and the others had to save her but was that really her fault?
"I'm sorry Inuyasha." She said as the tears finally began to fall. "I didn't mean to be such a burden" She hiccuped, beginning to cry harder as she looked at him. He did nothing but sneer at her.
"Sorry?! You're sorry?!" He asked half yelling half laughing at her. He gave her such a hateful look. Did he really hate her so much that he felt the need to be so mean to her? Did she really deserve all of this?
"Inuyasha that's enough you're taking this too far!" Sango yelled. Kagome couldn't help but look at her and cry harder. Maybe she really was useless. Wasshe so useless that she had to rely on the others in the group to defend her because she was simply too stupid to defend for herself. He was right, she really can't do anything for herself. Everything he said was right.
"Enough he's right I really am useless." She said, looking at the ground. "I can't do anything on my own. I rely on you guys to help me do everything. I can't even protect myself, and I rely on all of you to save me when I am in trouble."
"Finally the dumb bitch gets it!" He said laughing. He walked in the direction of Kagome all while grinning. Once he was in front of her he continued on his rant. "Don't. You. See. You. Aren't. Wanted. Here." He punctuated each word with a sharp jab to Kagome's forehead.
By the end of his rant her forehead began to bleed from where his nail had broken her skin. With every word he said she apologized. She decided to just take the treatment because she felt as if she had deserved it.
The rest of the group just stood there in disbelief. Was this really the Inuyasha that they had all grown to know over the last few months? Had he always been this hateful? Yes he had his moments but had he always been this awful towards Kagome.
How long had he taken her as a burden while they traveled? How long did he sit through everyday with the weight of these thoughts bearing down on his shoulders? What made him finally snap, was it Kagome spraining her ankle? Before they could finish these thoughts they heard a loud cracking noise.
Inuysha apparently wasn't done with this episode of anger. He had slapped Kagome across the face with enough force to knock her to the ground.
"Stop apologizing! It isn't going to fix anything you stupid bitch!" He yelled at her. Kagome just layed there on the ground holding her cheek crying harder than she already was. All she was able to think about was the pain on the side of her face. She didn't dare to lift her head to look at him fearing it would anger him more.
"Inuyasha stop! What's gotten into you?!" Sango yelled, rushing over to them. She stood between Kagome and Inuyasha in an attempt to stop him from attacking her further.
Which didn't make Kagome feel any better, yet again she was relying on others to protect her. She cried harder as she thought about all of this. She had finally had enough, she won't be a burden anymore if she just left.
Forgetting about the pain in her ankle and her face she ran to gather her things and leave. She ignored the few in the group who cared for her that were pleading with her to stop. Once everything was gathered she took off in the direction of Kaede's hut that they had left not long ago. She ran as fast as she could to get away from them, from him.
Maybe she could go to Kaede's for a few days until things calm down, but as she thought about that she felt as though she would just burden the poor woman who was already busy enough in the small village.
So Kagome decided to change directions and head to the well, where she could give herself time to think about what to do.
"Kagome?"
Kagome looked in the direction of the voice shocked. She was lost in thought thinking about how the day had gone. She hadn't expected Shippo to come find her, let alone for anyone to even attempt to follow her.
As she looked over Shippo she could clearly see that he had been crying and had taken a tumble. He was covered in dirt and had a few leaves stuck to him. The sight broke her heart, in her panic to get away from everything she had left him behind.
"Oh Shippo I'm so sorry I should've never left you behind I should've taken you with me." She said, beginning to cry again. She couldn't even bring herself to look at Shippo. She was so ashamed of herself.
"Oh Kagome it's ok. Just please don't ever leave me alone with them again." Shippo said, and began to cry as well. Kagome finally lifted her head to look at Shippo. The sight broke her heart, he had tears and snot running down his face. He was very obviously hurt by what she had done.
"Shippo come here." Kagome said to him, opening her arms up to hug him. He ran over to her and accepted her hug. They cried for a little while as they hugged each other.
"Kagome, what are we gonna do now?" Shippo asked. Kagome honestly didn't know at the moment what she planned to do. She couldn't go back to her time and leave Shippo here, and she didn't want to burden Kaede by letting her stay there.
"I don't know Shippo." She said, sounding a little defeated. They didn't really have anywhere they could go at the moment.
"Why don't we go stay with Kaede for a little while?" He asked.
"No, I don't want to burden her, she already has enough on her plate to deal with." Kagome said dejectedly. She sat there for a little while trying to think about what they could do.
"Why don't we find a clearing and set up camp? It's almost night time and we could set up a small fire and eat some food." Shippo suggested.
"Yeah, that seems like a pretty good idea Shippo." Kagome agreed. They wandered for a little bit in an attempt to find a clearing.
Eventually they got to a clearing, it wasn't by any means large but it wasn't small either. It was the perfect amount of room for just the two of them for the night. As Kagome set up camp Shippo ran off to get firewood.
"Look Kagome, I found lots of firewood for us!" Shippo said excitedly. He had found quite the arm full of little twigs and sticks.
"Thank you Shippo. That should be plenty of wood to get us through the night. Thank you." Kagome said softly. Normally Shippo begging so excited would make her smile but she just couldn't bring herself to.
"Would you like me to start the fire?" He asked as he began to set up the wood to be able to have a fire.
"Yes, that would be very nice of you if you could." She said softly.
While Shippo was starting the fire Kagome dug through her backpack in an attempt to find something she could make for her and Shippo.
"Yes!"
Slightly surprised, Kagome looked up to see that Shippo had gotten a small fire started. She was proud of him. He was such a strong little boy, he was extremely self reliant most days.
"What's for supper?" He asked, snapping her out of her train of thought.
"I found some ramen that I can make once I get some water." She replied. She slowly stood up to gather everything she would need in order to gather water for their dinner.
"No! I'll get the water! Your foot is injured, you should rest it." Shippo said in a hurry. She had honestly forgotten about her injury; she was too preoccupied with everything else that had happened that day.
"No Shippo. I will go and get the water. I need to start doing things on my own and not rely on others." She said, sounding rather upset.
"Oh ok sorry." Shippo said, looking at the fire absentmindedly.
"Shippo, I'm not mad at you. Thank you for being thoughtful and trying to help but I need to do this on my own." She said, patting the top of his head softly.
"Ok I understand." He said softly.
Kagome slowly began to limp her way through the woods in an attempt to find a water source. As she was wondering she made sure not to go too far away from Shippo having practically abandoned him once already.
As the evening went on the wind slowly got cooler. The leaves crinkled and crunched in the wind. Still Kagome couldn't bring herself to be bothered by the cold wind. Eventually she could hear running water. Changing directions to head there she wondered if she was getting too far away from Shippo.
Eventually reaching the water she was pleasantly surprised with how clear the water was. The water in the stream was pleasant although it was very cold. Kagome gathered a few buckets of the water so that she and Shippo would have plenty of water for supper and to be able to have hot water to clean their clothes.
"Disgusting." Kagome said, looking at her reflection in the stream. All she could see was a pathetic excuse of a person. She looked at the dirt on her face and the handprint bruise on her cheek. She splashed some of the cool water on her face to clean up. The water felt nice against her bruise.
Kagome was so lost in her own little world at that moment that she hadn't even noticed quite how much danger she was in.
