Chapter One: The Visions Begin

SOUL SOCIETY - TWELFTH DIVISION

The shinigami of the twelfth division hurried to form two lines as the woman walked by. Each bowed, though the first who did she caught with a look to prevent him from getting on his knees. The others caught on. They restrained themselves from the complete bow she was easily entitled to.

Rin hurried to the front of the two lines. With a slight bow of his head, he held out a tea tray and turned to lead her further into the division.

"Shinnouhi," he said quickly, "how honored we are to see you here again."

"Yes," agreed Nemu just ahead after she gave a low bow. "You grace us with your presence once again."

"I don't mind," the woman said quickly. "Please, I don't wish to keep you from your duties."

"Rin," Nemu said to him, "I will take it from here."

"Yes, fukutaicho," Rin said. He turned to the woman, "Have a pleasant day, Shinnouhi."

With a bow, he left, clapping lightly to signal the other members back to their usual duties.

"I won't get used to that," the woman admitted. "You are all so formal with me."

"It is your right, Shinnouhi. We are just showing our respect."

A look crossed her face.

"Is something the matter?" Nemu inquired. "This is why you are here to see Mayuri-sama?"

"I'm here to see him as I often do. You know this."

"Yes," she admitted. "But today -. Forgive me, Shinnouhi. It is not my business."

"Nemu," the woman placed her hand on the other's arm. "Isn't there something else you wish to say - to call me?"

"Taicho? No, your title is higher in rank," she insisted.

"That's not what I mean," she said. She slightly tightened her grip on Nemu's arm. Nemu turned to her.

"It's okay, Nemu. I say it's alright."

Nemu looked away.

"Well, when you feel like saying it, do say it. I won't get angry." She was about to say something when something else when she stopped. The words seemed foreign.

"Shinnouhi?"

The woman shook her head. "It's just a feeling."

"Mayuri-sama," Nemu called. "Shinnouhi is here."

The other worldly man, decked out in heavy makeup and a haori bowed to her. "Shinnouhi, I am pleased to see you again. Your call is prepared. Please, have some tea."

"Thank you, Kurotsuchi Taicho."

Nemu placed the tea before her. "Perhaps you would like some chamomile?"

"That would be nice, thank you."

Nemu looked briefly to Mayuri.

Mayuri placed his hand slightly on one of hers. He tried to read her. "Are you alright -?"

Before he could add her title, she looked at him. He nearly gasped with a memory of one of the last times she looked that way. The day she died.

"Mayuri," she said, a shock as she seldom used his first name.

She looked away.

Nemu returned with the extra tea bags. She looked briefly between them, then took an empty cup to prepare the chamomile.

"Mayuri-sama, perhaps we should start the call?" Nemu suggested.

"A good idea, Nemu," he agreed.

Tapping a few buttons, Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin appeared on screen.

Yoruichi Shihoin Voice Over:

PREVIOUSLY ON BLEACH: ACROSS THE DIMENSIONS:

I thought I had seen just about everything in my life as a shinigami, that nothing could surprise me. How wrong I was. My lover Kisuke and I were married in a previous life and had a daughter - Shirayukihime. He sold her to the Emperor of Heaven, and then she died. Her child died.

I remember this because my child came back, reincarnated as a human. She regained the memories of her past life and gained some of her power. She became Shirahime Thorne, shinigami, fourth seat of the eleventh division, then third seat of the tenth division. Then Aizen came again and was nearly successful in becoming a god. But she came back as Shirayukihime no Tenjou and bought us time with her life.

Sou Taicho promoted her - posthumously - to fifth division taicho - to replace the traitor Aizen. All a ploy to please the royal family, I'm sure. To say he was in shock when she had been resurrected would be an understatement. Now he had to make good on that promotion.

Kisuke and I talk to her in Soul Society as she often comes by the twelfth division. She's made this a habit to speak with us this way. And oddly, Kurotsuchi Taicho seems to have gotten used to it. Of course, he reminds everyone to call her by her title, Shinnouhi. She is the Imperial Princess, and sometimes she needs to remind others of that. Such as about now.

SOUL SOCIETY - TWELFTH DIVISION

"AIJOU!" Yoruichi shouted.

"Wow," Shirahime sat back. "Hello, mom."

"She called me mom, not Yoruichi-ma," Yoruichi whispered to Kisuke.

"And does my aijou miss me?" Kisuke asked a little rhythmically.

Shirahime bunched her eyebrows. "Is he talking to me like a child?"

"Hello, Kisuke-da."

Kisuke sat back in disappointment. "Why? Why?" he asked.

"You're still in the doghouse," Yoruichi said.

Shirahime raised her eyebrow.

"But I love my aijou!" he exclaimed.

"We'll see," Shirahime said.

Watching, Nemu smiled, but just slightly.

"My princess," Yoruichi said. "I'm happy to hear from you. Are you okay?"

"Is Kurotsuchi treating you well?" Kisuke asked. "No poisoning?"

"Urahara," Mayuri interrupted. "That would be a death sentence."

Shirahime looked over at him. "A very drawn out one, yes." She looked back at her parents. "But seriously -."

"Aijou, should we be expecting another grandchild?" Yoruichi asked.

"What?" she exclaimed.

"I'll kill him," Kisuke vowed. "Next time I see Zaraki."

"Wh-what?"

"Lighten up, Kisuke. I love Yachiru. It'd be nice to have another one," Yoruichi said.

"But Zaraki?" Kisuke asked.

"Of course, it - it is Zaraki's, right?" Yoruichi asked.

Shirahime had been very interested in drinking her tea.

"You're not saying anything," Yoruichi said.

"Wait a minute, it's not Zaraki's?" Kisuke asked. "Ayasegawa's?"

Shirahime still said nothing.

"Not Zaraki or Ayasegawa? Then who?"

"Hitsugaya," Yoruichi said.

Shirahime looked back at them, eyes wide.

"It can't be," Kisuke denied. "Well, the only other person could be -. Mayuri Kurotsuchi, I will kill you."

Mayuri rarely looked shocked. Today was an exception.

Nemu tried hard to contain her excitement.

"Ahem." Shirahime did one of those very well-placed stage coughs. Then she laughed. "This is actually hilarious," she said.

"Not to me," Mayuri objected. "They wouldn't kill me. They'd simply dismember me."

Shirahime looked to him.

"The Royal Guard. No one's allowed to touch you. Certainly not that."

"Ah, yes, that," she remarked. But neither Kenpachi nor Yumi cares.

"You expect me to believe that you and Zaraki - even Ayasegawa didn't -," Yoruichi began.

"Please," Shirahime objected. "I'm not discussing that sort of thing with you."

Mayuri tried to stop his mind from wandering.

A serious look marred Shirahime's face a moment later.

"What is it?" Kisuke asked.

"There's something wrong. Something off. I'm not sure yet what, but it bothers me."

"Why?" Yoruichi asked. "What do you feel?"

Shirahime took a breath. "Shirayukihime no -."

"Stop!" Kisuke exclaimed. "Stop right there."

Mayuri stepped back when the words came from her.

"Aijou, you'll not say that name," Yoruichi insisted. "You've died once for that power. It won't happen again."

"I'm the Shinnouhi," Shirahime insisted. "It's my duty. And as a taicho."

"I forbid it!" Kisuke insists.

"Oh?" she prompted. "Kisuke Urahara, how appropriate coming from you."

"Shinnouhi," Kisuke said quickly, noting her swift change to anger, referring to her title to try to reason with her, "please don't -."

"Be angry?" she asked. "What makes you think I'm not Shirayukihime? What makes you think I don't remember? What makes you think I don't remember how much of it was your fault?" Her reiatsu lashed out angrily, but she drew it back in.

"Aijou, please," Yoruichi begged. "We can't undo the past, but we don't want to lose you again."

"Not that I'd believe that, not of him. You ruined me, Kisuke. And no matter how you hide it, you still don't want me. Don't even bother to argue it."

Shirahime closed her eyes. "Some days, I just can't take it." She looked at them again and the look from that day returned. "I'm happy to have found Yachiru. I wish I could have saved the others. Maybe one day I will. Sometimes I think I'll be gone by that time. So, there's something I wish to ask you. Beg if I must."

"Aijou, please," Yoruichi repeated.

"Please look after my children, however many that is. Do a better job with them than you did with me."

She turned off the monitor and drained her tea in one gulp.

"Thank you, Mayuri, Nemu." She turned to leave.

"Please let me go with you," Mayuri insisted.

With a nod, she agreed. Mayuri grabbed a spare robe and threw it over her taicho's haori, covering her number. He took off his own and they walked into the night.

Bleach: Cross Backgrounds - May differ from Bleach canon.

Shirahime Thorne (Shihoin): The final incarnation of Shirayukihime no Tenjou who is engaged to Crown Prince Shiroyuki, the next Soul King. She is an elder god. She was once a human, Sam Hawthorne, who was engaged to the human Kenny Jameson. Kenny died and later was reincarnated as the shinigami Kenpachi Zaraki. She was previously in the eleventh division then the tenth division. She sacrificed her life to stop Aizen's plan to become a god. Sou Taicho Yamamoto named her as the new Fifth Division Taicho in a desperate attempt to prevent the royal family from killing everyone, or namely just him. Her first incarnation was the mother of Princess Hikari (now reincarnated as Yachiru Kusajishi) and the daughter of the prior incarnations of Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin. Zanpakuto: Kosetsu Ryu and Yukihime (no Tenjou).

Ayasegawa, Yumichika: Eleventh Division's Fifth Seat who is Shirahime's lover.

Hitsugaya, Toshiro: Tenth Division Taicho who is in love with Shirahime. He is Kenpachi's rival. Despite appearance, he is an adult.

Kita, Shinjiro: Fifth Division's Fifth Seat and previously the Eleventh Division's Seventh Seat. He took charge of the Fifth Division after Shirahime's death and believed she would be incarnated again. He has been interested in Shirahime since they were both members of the eleventh division. He is loyal to Shirahime and is her closest friend in the Fifth Division.

Kurotsuchi, Mayuri: Twelfth Division Taicho who insists his division always refer to Shirahime as Shinnouhi. Creator of Nemu.

Kusajishi, Yachiru: The present incarnation of Princess Hikari, Shirayukihime no Tenjou's daughter. She considers Kenpachi Zaraki her father and Shirahime her mother. Likes to play with Kosetsu Ryu.

Shihoin, Yoruichi: An exiled shinigami who is the reincarnation of Shirayukihime's mother. She is close to her daughter and granddaughter. Former Taicho of the Second Division.

Soi Fon: Current Second Division Taicho and Shirahime's honorary sister. Yoruichi is her idol.

Urahara, Kisuke: An exiled shinigami who is the reincarnation of Shirayukihime's father. He once hated Shirahime, but now begs to be acknowledged as her father again. Former Taicho of the Twelfth Division.

Zaraki, Kenpachi: Eleventh Division Taicho, father of Yachiru, and Shirahime's lover. He is the reincarnation of Shirahime Thorne's human fiancé. He is Toshiro's rival.
