The Chamber of Secrets
Chapter 5 - Brewing and Duelling
Days passed since the attack on Miss Norris and not a single student could forget especially since Filch keeps reminding them either by standing guard on the scene or giving them detention over the most ridiculous, Terra had to admit if her owl or any of her creatures got attacked she would be in a bad mood too.
One day in the courtyard she noticed that Ginny was sitting on a stone bench looking upset, she approached the youngest Weasley and had a small chat, she was upset about Miss Norris being a huge cat lover. Terra thought of a way to cheer her up and what better way then introducing her to Lulu, it went well and cheered up the redhead, and she too kept her secret. But her own fear for what could happen was rooted deep, when Harry explained about hearing a voice in Detention with Lockhart did made her worry, at first she thought it was Harry had Legitimacy but quickly withdrawn the idea for if he did he would be in a terrible state after hearing stories from her Aunt Queenie about her struggle with it when she was young but she did know there can be late developers of this kind of magic, and by how his muggle relatives treat him they would have thrown him to the closest Insane Asylums. Hermione was reading more than usual; Terra wonder why and when she asked Harry and Ron about it they were as clueless as her.
During Transfiguration, Terra sat next to Hermione, Arch was on her shoulder as they wear asked to bring their own pets for this class, while several others where provide by McGonagall.
"Could I have your attention, please!" said McGonagall to the class. "Right, now today we will be transforming animals, into water goblets, like so," she turned to one of the birds near her desk. "One two three Vera Verto," she tapped her wand against the bird and turned into a glass goblet. The glass muttered in wonder. "Now it's your turn, who would like to go first?" she walked to the students desks. "Ah Mr Weasley. One two three Vera Verto."
"Vera Verto" Ron casted, but the spell half work, Scabbers did turn into a goblet, but it had fur and a tail while Scabbers squeaked, the class laughed, Terra suppressed her laugh behind her hand.
"That wand needs replacing Mr Weasley," McGonagall commented, walking away to pick another student but Hermione raised her hand. "Yes Miss Granger?"
"Professor… I was wondering if you could tell us about the chamber of secrets."
There was a heavy pause, all eyes were at McGonagall.
"Very well," McGonagall gave in. "You all know, of course that Hogwarts was founded over a thousand year ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, now three of the founders coexisted quite harmoniously, one did not."
"Three guesses who," Ron muttered to Harry.
"Salazar Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students admitted to Hogwarts," McGonagall continued. "He believed magical learning should be kept within all-magic families, in other words pure-bloods, unable to sway the others, he decided to leave the school. Now according to legend, Slytherin had built a hidden chamber in this castle known as the chamber of secrets. Though, shortly before departing he sealed it until that time when his own true Heir returned to the school, the Heir alone would be able to open the chamber and unleash the horror within, and by so doing purge the school of all those who in Slytherin's view, were unworthy to study magic."
"Muggle-borns" said Hermione.
McGonagall nodded at her.
"Well, naturally, the school has been searched many times. No such chamber has been found."
"Professor? What exactly does legend tells us lies within the chamber," Hermione asked.
"The chamber is said to be home to something that only the Heir of Slytherin can control, it is said to be the home of a monster."
When class ended the quartet made their way to the down corridors.
"Do you think it's true?" said Ron. "Do you think there really is a chamber of secrets?"
"Yes, couldn't you tell? McGonagall's worried, all the teachers are," Hermione said.
They came up to the scene of the attack, a chair was placed near the wall where the writing on the wall is, now parts scrubbed off whatever the red stuff is, it's going to take a long time for it to go away.
"That's where Filch has been keeping guard," Ron muttered.
They looked around no one else but the four of them.
"Can't hurt to have a poke around," Harry said, dropping his bag and start to crawling on his hands and knees looking for clues.
Terra did the same, leaving her case near Harry's bag, Lulu poked out of her pocket, crawls down her arm and starts looking around too, Terra then smelt something that made her stop and groan in disgust, Lu smelt it to and quickly climbed up to the Hufflepuff's shoulder, it smelled like something was sleeping in its own filth.
"Scorch marks!" Harry said, "Here- and here."
"Come and look at this!" said Hermione. "This is funny."
Harry and Terra got up and crossed to the window next to the message on the wall, Hermione pointed at the topmost, about 20 spiders, all in a hurry to get though a small crack in the glass.
"That's very strange," Terra muttered looking more close to the spiders.
"Have you ever seen spiders act like that?" said Hermione.
"No" said Harry. "Have you, Ron? Ron?"
Terra turned from the window to look to see Ron backing away, and looked ready to book it.
"What's up?" asked Harry.
"I, don't, like, spiders," Ron tensely said.
"I never knew that," said Hermione. "You've used spiders in potions loads of times."
"I don't mind them dead," Ron replied, looking anywhere but the window. "I just don't like the way they move."
Hermione started to giggle.
"It's not funny," said Ron fiercely.
Terra thought it would be best to get off the subject, she said.
"Remember last night there was water on the floor?"
"Your right Terra," Harry says. "Where did it come from? Someone's mopped it up."
"It was about there," said Ron, recovering himself, walking pass Filch's chair. "It was level with this door."
He went to reach the door handle to open it when a voice came behind them, making all four them jump and Lu hide back in Terra's cloak.
"RON!" It was Percy, and he was not happy. "That's a Girl's Bathroom! What are you?"
"Just having a look around," Ron shrugged. "Clues, you know."
That sentence just mad the Gryffindor Perfect even madder, and they were shooed away, so they headed away before things got even worst. While walking Hermione brought back up the topic of the Heir of Slytherin has returned to Hogwarts but wonder who it could be.
"Let's think," Ron says in a mock tone. "Who do we know who thinks all Muggle-borns are scum?"
"If you're talking about Malfoy-," Hermione inquired.
"Of course, you heard him!" said Ron. 'You'll be next Mudbloods!'
"I heard him," said Hermione. "But Malfoy the Heir of Slytherin?"
"Not all Slytherins are bad Ron," Terra joined in. "Just because the house has had more dark wizards and witches does mean they all going to turn bad."
She remembered how he was quick to judge about Hufflepuffs.
"Why are you defending them?" Ron said in a raised tone.
"Because my mum was in Slytherin," Terra told them stopping in her tracks, as did they.
"I never knew that?" said Harry.
"W-well I never mentioned it," she replied. "She was nothing like Malfoy or Parkinson."
"Was," Hermione repeated.
"She died when I was eight," Terra sighed, looking away from her friends.
"Oh Terra, I'm sorry," said Hermione.
"It's fine you didn't know," Terra replied, "It's still delicate to talk about, can we get back to finding out who the Heir could be."
"Alright," said Harry. "But I think Ron's right about Malfoy, I mean look at his family the whole lot for them have been is Slytherin for centuries, they could be descendants, his Father's definitely evil enough."
"Well," said Hermione cautiously. "I suppose it's possible."
"But how do we prove it?" said Harry darkly.
Hermione told them about a Potion that can change ones appearance for a certain amount of time is the best way to find out if Malfoy is the Heir or not. After getting a permission slip sighed by the naïve Lockhart, they got the book from the restricted section and began preparing the Potion, some of the ingredients was in the Student Cupboard but for the rest where in Snape's private storage, to get them won't be till much later. The trio agreed for Terra to do the potion making see how she was a natural, and they do the 'go under cover' bit when the time comes, seeing how the Polyjuice Potion take a mouth to make, and it would be odd if four Slytherins where attacking unusual.
However, that had to wait, the first Quidditch match was about to start, Gryffindor Vs Slytherin, Terra sat with Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid in the Gryffindor stands, after lasts years first match, Terra thought bringing her wand would be wise. She watched the main play, Slytherin in lead 90 to 30, she would keep an eye on Harry, who was tailed by Draco, knowing full well, he was going to let Harry do all work and no doubt taking the mick out of him too. Suddenly out of nowhere one of the Bludgers starts going after Harry and only Harry.
"Blimey Harry's got himself a rouge Bludger," says Hagrid, "That's been tampered with that has!"
Hermione stopped Ron who was about to hex the Bludger with his broken wand but even with a normal is too risky and could hit Harry instead, all they could do is watched as Harry tries to shake off the Bludger, Harry spotted and went after the Snitch followed by Malfoy, the two were out of sight in the gap between the pitch and the stands, a couple minutes later they fly out but Malfoy fell off his broom and landed hard on his backside. Harry still after the Snitch, just within his reach, the Bludger from before smacked into his outstretched arm. The Gryffindor's ohed seeing the hit, Terra covered her mouth with her hands as she gasped, Harry used his other arm that was holding on his broom, lost his grip and fell off his broom too.
"Let's go," Hermione said to Ron and Terra, they hurry off.
On the way down Lee Jordan who was commentating the match, told the crowd Harry had caught the Snitch Gryffindor winning the match, by the time they were on the pitch, the Bludger was still going after Harry, he managed to roll to avoid it, as it was about to hit a fourth time Terra pulled out her Wand from her holster.
"PROTEGO!" she shouted pointing her wand at Harry, the Bludger bounced off to the side just as it was about to hit on Harry's, "IMMOBULUS!" she shouted again, this time pointing at the Bludger, it slowed down just enough for Fred and George to get it back in the chest.
"Nice one Terra," said Fred after shutting the chest.
"Eh what's that brainless git doing," said George.
"What?" Terra inquired, the twins point behind her, she turns around and what she saw wished she hadn't.
"Brackium Emendo!" Lockhart said, his wand pointed on Harry's broken arm.
A bright light shined and went, Lockhart put his wand away looking pleased he lifted you Harry's arm only for it go limp, he didn't mend the bones, he got rid of all the bones in Harry's arm. The crowd groaned in disgust.
"Ah, yes, well," Lockhart shuttered. "That can sometimes happen, um, but the point is," he bend the arm back, making the crowd groan in disgust again. "You can no longer feel any pain, and very clearly, the bones are not broken."
"Broken?" Hagrid barked. "There's no bones left!"
Harry's arm flopped down.
"Much more flexible though," Lockhart commented.
"What was is you called him again?" Terra asked George.
"A brainless git," George repeated.
Half an hour later; they along with the Gryffindor team, stand by Harry's bedside as the wait for Madam Pomfrey to come back from her office.
"Oh, Mr Malfoy stop making such a fuss you can go," Pomfrey snapped, clearly unhappy. "Out of my way, out of my way," she pushed by the team to get to the over side, "Should have been brought straight to me I can mend bones in a heartbeat, but growing them back."
"You will be able to wont you?" Hermione asked worriedly.
"Oh, I'll be able to, certainly, but it'll be painful," Madam Pomfrey replied, she pours a glass of Skele-Grow for Harry. "You're in for a rough night potter, regrowing bones is nasty business."
Harry took a sip only to spit it back out, the team backed away to not get hit.
"Well, what do you expect? Pumpkin Juice?"
Horrible news was told by next morning, Colin Creevey had been attacked last night, Terra meet up with Hermione and Ron and agreed to start working on the Polyjuice Potion at once, Ron thought it would be best to make the potion in Terra's suitcase, but the Hufflepuff was not going to have that, saying to never leave a boiling cauldron around anywhere, especially not near her Creatures plus it would be suspicious if her Suitcase starts to leak out stream on her way to classes, so they made their way to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.
Half way though of putting the first ingredients to start the potion, Harry came in, his arm backed to normal, and he told them that Dobby the House Elf had popped by in the Hospital Wing last night, it was Dobby who stopped him and Ron from getting on the Hogwarts Express and for making that Bludger chase after him, and slipped information that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened before, but the other question is, what is Slytherins monster?
Not long after, Professor McGonagall came around collecting names of those who would be staying at school for Christmas, the Golden Trio signed up and so Draco, Crabbe and Goyle, McGonagall knew that the Scamander children were staying thanks to a letter their dad sent, as soon as they get the horn of a bicorn and Boomslang skin they should be able to use the potion by Christmas Day, the only problem was to get it without Snape knowing, during Thursday's double potions Harry caused a diversion by throwing a Filibuster firework into Goyle's Cauldron that made his Swelling Solution potion explode, in the chaos Hermione got what they needed and quickly hid it in Terra's suitcase. When the class had calm down Snape looked more mean looking if that was even possible when he found what was left of the firework, but as he said when he finds out who did it, he glared at Harry, once class was over they hurried to the bathroom to added the other ingredients.
7 days later, the quartet were walking across the Entrance Hall where a small knot of people gathered near the notice-broad, where a Dueling club is happening at 8 o'clock tonight, interested, and useful to know they decided to go. As they waited in the Great Hall, Rolf several of his mates stood behind them as they wait for a Professor to teach them. However, the Professor in question that is to teach them, made Harry, Ron and if not all the boys in the hall plus Terra groan in misery.
"Gather round, gather round!" Lockhart called out. "can everyone see me? Can you all hear me? Excellent!"
"Unfortunately," Rolf whispered to his mates, making them, Terra, Harry, and Ron snort with laughter.
"Now," Lockhart exclaimed, "Professor Dumbledore has granted me permission to start this little Duelling Club, to train you all up in case you ever need to defend yourselves as I myself have done on countless occasions, for full details, see my published works."
Terra and Rolf rolled their eyes at the same time at that sentences.
"Let me introduce my assistant Professor Snape," said Lockhart, flashing a wide smile. "He tells me he knows a tiny little bit about duelling himself and his sportingly agreed to help me with a short demonstration before we begin. Now, I don't want any of you youngsters to worry, you'll still have your Potions Master when I'm though with him, never fear!"
Terra and Harry shared a look, they can think of three things wrong with that sentence, for one if someone like Snape was called an assistant they will regret it before they can say 'oh dear'. Second after Lockhart's lesson with the pixies was a joke, this will not be any better, and third the look Snape was giving to Lockhart, they would run for it, and fast.
The two Professors faced each other, bowed raised their wands like there were swords, and on the count of three, Snape blasted the Disarming Charm 'Expelliarmus' sending Lockhart off the stage and smashed into wall…as excepted. So, after that it was time for the students to give a go.
Snape reached to Harry and Ron.
"Time to split the dream team I think," he sneered. Weasley, "You can partner with Finnigan, Miss Granger you are with Miss Bulstrode. Potter-"
Harry moved automatically towards Terra.
"I don't think so," said Snape, smiling coldly. "Mr Malfoy come over here, let's see what you make of the famous Potter. And you Miss Scamander you can partner with Miss Parkinson."
Malfoy strutted over smirking, as did Parkinson and Bulstrode, Terra looked over to Rolf who was partnered with one of his mates, he winked at her, knowing something that her opponent did not.
"Face your partners!" Lockhart called out, standing on the platform. "And bow!"
"You in for it now Scamander," Pansy said with a cold smirk.
She didn't replied, she was forced.
"Wands at the ready!" shouted Lockhart. "When I count to three, cast your charms to disarm your opponent – only to disarm them, we don't want any accidents. One… two… three!"
But Pansy started on 'two', she casted Flipendo but Terra was expecting Parkinson to cast first.
"Protego!" Terra said, the shield charm prevented the Flipendo to hit her but the stone wall next to her.
Pansy was shocked, Terra took that moment to strike.
"Petrificus Totalus," she said.
Pansy's arms where snapped to her side, her legs stood straight and keeled over backwards. Satisfied with that she dropped her stance, looked over at Rolf one more time, he gave the thumbs up, it only at that moment she realised the utter chaos that was happening around her.
"Stop! Stop!" screamed Lockhart. But Snape took charge.
"Finite Incantatem!" he shouted, the chaos stopped, Pansy stood up quickly from the floor, giving Terra a glare that could kill, but Terra knew if she started anything, Rolf would have his say in it as the protective brother that he is.
Hermione was in a headlock, Harry leapt forward and pulled Millicent off with difficultly as she was bigger than Harry. Terra went over and picked up Hermione's wand and handing it to her.
"That was brilliant what you did to Parkinson Terra," Harry commented smiling.
"Where did you learn that?" Hermione whizzed.
"My Uncle Theseus," Terra replied feeling her cheeks go red. "He was head in the Auror department in his early days, so he taught me a few spells after what happened last year."
"And it paid off," Rolf said, walking towards them, "Nicely done little bow."
Terra face went even redder.
"Little Bow?" Hermione repeated with smile.
"Uh that-" but she was cut off by Lockhart, the first time she is relieved by his impeccable timing.
"I think I'd better teach you how to block unfriendly spells," said Lockhart standing flustered in the midst of the hall. Let's have a volunteer pair, Longbottom and Finch-Fletchley, how about you?"
"A bad idea, Professor Lockhart," said Snape. "Longbottom causes devastation with the simplest spells; we'll be sending what's left of Finch-Fletchley up to the Hospital Wing in a matchbox."
"What a git," Rolf muttered, Terra smiled looking up at her brother.
"How about Malfoy and Potter?" said Snape with a twisted smile.
"Excellent idea," said Lockhart, gesturing the two boys into the middle of the hall, everyone else back way.
Terra, Ron, and Hermione watched as Lockhart gave Harry 'pointers', but she and Ron only shock their heads as Lockhart dropped his wand pretending its excited. But when Harry and Malfoy began, Draco bellowed 'Serpensortia!' and a long black snake shot out of his wand, the crowd backed away even more, as the snake raised itself. Snape was about to get rid of it but Lockhart beaten him to it, but it only angered the snake more after the brainless git flew up ten feet into the air and landed with a loud smack, it raised its head again, it faced Justin it was hissing madly, it was going to attack him, but then another hissing came from somewhere else, terra looked for where it was coming from, she did an double tack when the second hissing was coming from Harry. The snake left Justin and slithered away for Snape to vanish it into thin air.
"What are you playing at?" Justin shouted angrily.
Terra, Ron, and Hermione shared a look and they understood, Ron went over to Harry quickly and dragged him out of the hall, the girls followed suit as everyone backed away as if their hand Dragon Pox, the Quarte headed straight to the Room where Terra would attend to her creatures.
Once inside Terra locked the door with her wand just as Ron said.
"You're a Parselmouth! Why didn't you tell us?"
"I'm a what?" said Harry confused.
"A Parelmouth!" Ron repeated. "You can talk to snakes?"
"I know," said Harry. "I mean, that's only the second time I've ever done it, I accidentally set a Boa Constrictor on my cousin Dudley at the zoo once, long story, but it was telling me it had never seen Brazil and I sort of set it free without meaning to, that's was before I knew I was a wizard."
"A Boa Constrictor told you it had never seen Brazil," Terra said in both wonder and confusion.
"So?" Harry said. "I bet loads of people here can do it."
"Oh no they can't," said Ron. "It's not a very common gift. Harry this is bad."
"What's bad," said Harry starting to get angry. "What's wrong with everyone? Listen if I hadn't told that snake to not attack Justin-"
"Oh, that's what you said to it?" said Ron.
"You where their you heard me," said Harry.
"Harry we only heard you speaking Parseltongue," said Terra carefully not to anger Harry more. "It's another language, we couldn't understand what you said back in the Hall."
"I spoke a different language?" Harry gasped. "But… I didn't realise… how can I speak a language without knowing I can speak it?"
Terra shook her head while Ron and Hermione were looking as if someone had died.
"D'you want to tell me what's wrong with stopping a dirty great snake from biting Justin's head off," said Harry. "What does it matter how I did it as long as Justin doesn't have to join the Headless Hunt?"
"It matters," said Hermione, as last speaking in a hushed voice. "Because being able to talk to snakes is what Salazar Slytherin was famous for. That's why the symbol of Slytherin house is a serpent."
Harry mouth fell open.
"Exactly," Ron said. "And now the whole school's going to think you're his great-great-great-great grandson or something."
"But I'm not," said Harry with panic tone and look to match. "I can't be."
"You'll find that hard to prove," said Hermione. "He lived about a thousand years ago, for all we know you could be."
Okay things are getting more serious for the quartet, and now the Golden Trio now know Terra's mam was in Slytherin but how she died it shall be revealed in Book 3.
