Trigger Warning: Mentions Of Lost Pregnancy
"Why?", Jensen thinks, sitting on the bed next to Harmony, his head on his hands. She is still sleeping, thanks to whatever the physician had given her, and Jensen just wishes that she wouldn't have to wake up to the brutal reality that they were now facing.
He had known about the rebel threat for a couple years now, having dispatched his spies to find and apprehend them, and bring peace to the Kingdom once more. However, as if the rebels knew what he had done, they had gone underground, making it hard for him to end this before it got out of hand.
Now, they had become brazen and attacked his family in his own home. Jensen had to give it to his own men, they had fought with everything they had, despite being outnumbered. Once word got back to him and he made it to the courtyard, the fight was well underway and all he could do was back his men up.
He hadn't even realized that Harmony was still there until Jared called him over. He still didn't know how it happened or how Harmony got caught in the middle of it all, that will have to wait until Harmony is better. For now, he will keep watch over her until she awakes and he has to tell her that their child is gone. "Why?".
Harmony stirs next to him, slowly opening her eyes, Jensen already holding her hand so she knows she's not alone. She looks up at him and he gives her a small, sad smile when he sees her beautiful eyes open.
-"Sweetheart?"
-"Hi."
-"How are you feeling? Do you want me to get the physician?"
-"No, I'm just sore. Is everyone okay?" - She tries sitting up, but Jensen holds her shoulder down, keeping her laying on the bed.
-"There are a few injuries, but nothing serious."
-"And the baby? Is the baby okay?"
-"I'm sorry, sweetheart."
Harmony knows exactly what that means. Their baby, their unborn child, is gone. As hard as Harmony could try, she would never be able to stop the tears that began falling down her cheeks, as sobs raked through her body.
There was nothing that Jensen wanted more in that moment than to be able to take the pain that Harmony was feeling away. He holds her close to him, feeling her body shaking as she sobs in his arms.
-"It's my fault. I should've been faster in getting out of there." - She sobs against his chest.
-"No, sweetheart, it's not. Don't say that. None of this is your fault. If you want to blame someone, blame me. I was the one who wasn't there to protect you in the first place."
Harmony doesn't say anything else. It is killing Jensen knowing that Harmony blames herself for what happened. He doesn't know exactly what happened, but he knows his wife. She wouldn't put herself in a situation where either she or anyone that she cares about would be in danger.
Jensen continues holding Harmony, caressing her hair and whispering comforting words, until he hears her breathing even out. He knows she has fallen back to sleep and it doesn't take long before he falls asleep as well, praying that things will get better.
The next morning, Harmony wakes up alone. Well, not entirely. She can hear that one of the servants is there, poking the fire in the fireplace of the living area, and making sure that everything is ready for when she wakes up. Harmony lays in bed, thinking back on the day before, and tears fill her eyes when she remembers what Jensen had said.
She still couldn't quite believe that fate would be that cruel to her, not after everything she went through in her life. To have her child taken away from her in that way was beyond cruel. She hears movement and low voices coming from the living area beyond her bedroom doors.
Harmony gets up from the bed and makes her way to the doors, wanting to know who is there, since she doesn't recognize the voices. As she stops by the door, her hand on the handle, the voices become clearer, as does the conversation itself, making her stop.
-"Has Her Majesty awoken yet?" - One of the voices says.
-"No, but after all that she went through yesterday, I say she more than deserves to rest."
-"You're right. I can't imagine going through that. To lose your child like that, without even having a chance at seeing their face, that can't be easy."
-"It's not. I lost my first born just days after I found out I was with child, and it's a pain I don't wish on anyone." - The kinder of the two voices tells her companion.
-"I'm sorry, I didn't know."
-"It's alright. I don't often talk about it, but I'm not ashamed of it either, you know?"
-"Do you think Her Majesty knows?" - The first one asks.
-"I don't believe so. His Majesty left about an hour or so ago and requested for someone to be here for when the Queen woke up, so…"
-"Will you tell her?"
-"Not my place. Besides, how would I tell Her Majesty something like that? 'Oh, by the way, the man that killed your baby is getting executed this morning.' Yeah, I don't think so."
For some reason, those words froze Harmony. "He's getting executed.", she thinks, anger and relief mixing themselves inside of her. A feeling of vindication filled her heart and she knew exactly what she needed to do.
Jensen almost ran to his chambers once he received word that Harmony was awake. No, not just awake. She is awake and getting dressed to attend the execution. He had heard from one of his guards that she had confronted not only the servant that he had left attending to her but also one of the guards that stood watch outside their chambers.
Once she had received confirmation, Harmony had sent word to her handmaidens to help her get dressed so she could attend the execution. Jensen had sent a valet to inform his mother, thinking that maybe she can help him convince Harmony not to do it.
Jensen has to admire Harmony's determination in wanting to make it appear as if everything is fine, but she still needs to rest, as well as mourn their child properly. At the very least one of them has to be able to do it.
He reaches their chambers and walks in, seeing that his mother and Justice are both there. "Perfect, if anyone can convince her not to do this, it will be Justice.", he thinks, as he makes his way to her, sitting at her dresser.
-"What'd you doing, sweetheart?"
-"What does it look like?"
-"Well, it looks like you are getting ready to go somewhere. Where are you going?"
-"You know exactly where I'm going, Jensen. Don't try to tell me that someone hasn't already told you, okay?" - She tells him, as she puts her earrings on, giving him a pointed look through the mirror.
-"Sweetheart, I don't think that's a good idea."
-"We've been telling her that, Jensen, since we got here." - Donna says. -"Harmony, you need to rest, not to be standing in the courtyard."
-"Why don't you stay here with Justice?" - He asks, hoping she will say yes.
-"Yeah, we can stay here and you can just rest." - Justice interjects, smiling softly at her through the mirror.
-"ENOUGH!" - Harmony shouts, immediately feeling and looking guilty. -"Look, I get you are just trying to look after me, and I appreciate that, I do, but… I need to see the man that killed our child pay for what he did. Only then will I be able to start mourning properly, okay?"
-"I still think you don't need to do that, Harmony. It will only make you hurt even more." - Donna tries once more.
-"Mother, stop. Sweetheart, are you sure about this?"
-"I'm sure."
-"Okay then. We're going to the execution together."
Jensen helps her up and pulls her into a tight hug. He has to admit that he didn't think about it from that perspective, and maybe he should've had, but at the time he was more concerned about protecting her than anything else.
It is clear to Jensen that neither his mother or Justice agree with his decision, wanting to protect Harmony as best as they could, but thankfully neither of them says anything else, just following him and Harmony down to the courtyard.
As they arrive at the courtyard, it is clear in everyone's faces that no one was expecting to see Harmony there, and if the way they are looking at her is bothering her, she isn't showing. Jensen stands next to her, across from the platform that was placed on one side of the courtyard overnight, with Justice and his mother on her other side.
Jensen knows this isn't going to be easy for her, but hopefully it will put her on a road to recover from what happened. And maybe one day, this will all seem like a really bad dream.
