I do not own The Middle or any of it's characters
This is something that could've and should've and really wish would've happened when Sue ran over Axl's foot and I love this show so so much I just think Sue gets really shat on all the time by life and family and I need a good cry just watching the poor girl, so here I have a hot steaming vat of validation on this shiny silver platter just for you because I love you okay I'm procrastinating, I'm gonna start writing the story now...for real...I'm doing it...okay here I go...
enjoy!(:
"Why are you even in the kitchen!", he yelled with a little more anger in his tomber than usual.
Sue shut her mouth and backed away with her hands up. Any other day he would've wondered slightly at her lack of fight. Actually her lack of words. But when he looked at her he saw 'no football', written across her forehead.
"Ugh! I can't even do anything with these stupid crutches! Sue this is all your fault. You always screw things up. You're name should be screw up. It was fine when you didn't make a team as always, or when you embarrass yourself again. But you screwed something up for me this time. Someone who actually matters. Just go disappear until my foot heals. I don't want to even sense your presence till after the season ends, then add three months!", he yelled.
Instead of yelling back like she usually would Sue just looked up and breathed shakily with focus. She clenched the sweatshirt fabric hugging her knuckles as she tried desperately to at least keep the tears at the brim of her red eyes. She bit her trembling bottom lip with a nod. "Sorry.", she tried to say casually but it broke halfway. She attempted to turn and walk away while keeping it all together but it was one of the hardest things to do. Out the front door she left softly.
As the football player she benched he was unbothered. But as her brother his head stung with surprise. He was harsh. Really harsh. That was a look he'd never seen on her face.
"Wow. You finally did it. I mean even when she got rejected by art club, shot put tryouts, and debate team all in one week while having strep throat she didn't react like that. Or when she fell at the assembly in front of the whole school and that guy called her ugly and all the people in the bleachers laughed. Or when we all promised to show up to that one short play she finally got into and none of us did and she forgot her line and everyone boo'd her off stage. Or-", continued Brick before Axl threw his hand up.
"I get it.", he said with guilt.
"Look Axl. I've stayed out of this because I thought this was just another sibling thing, but I don't think it is. Sue has never had assurance that you loved her. Or even that any of us do. Then this happens. Sure you can't play the season out, but you've won tons of games. You got lifted up by your team and the crowds cheered your name with your whole family in the stands. And maybe you won't get into college with football but you still have a good chance with your grades or baseball or basketball. If you think about it, Sue doesn't have anything. She tries and tries everyday, harder than you've probably ever tried at anything and she gets nowhere. Imagine having nothing already than having someone who's validation you crave more than anything pointing all that out and calling you a screw up, saying you should disappear. You should cut her some slack Axl. Actually you should do more than that. I don't know if you've been reading her diary as much as the rest of us lately but it's not good. Mentally, she's about a small breeze away from never being the same.", said Brick.
Axl looked at his surprisingly out spoken brother with a foreign feeling in his consciousness and painted on his face.
"Let's go.", said Frankie coming down the hall referring to the ride to school she was providing with almost no complaining.
"Where's your sister?", she asked.
"Uh I think she walked.", said Axl eyes full of thought.
"Whatever.", said Frankie picking her battles.
And with that the day went by same as usual though Axl found most of it was used to be bothered by his brothers words and his sister's tearful aching face. That broken 'sorry', rang through his tormented his ears.
Sean gave him a ride home a few hours after school with Darrin in the back as they entered their neighborhood soaked in dusk.
"Hey have you done anything about your sister?", asked Sean.
"What do you mean?", asked Axl.
"Well people have been giving her a pretty hard time since you were taken out. The whole town practically. I walked into the locker room just in time the other day. I actually think that guy was gonna punch her. I mean I'm a pacifist, but if that were my sister I'd be guarding her all the time or put up threatening posters or something.", said Sean.
Before Axl could resond to that new rattling piece of information driving by them was a car of some suspicious familar student faces.
A few feet later Sean pulled up in front of the Heck house. Axl looked back at the ghost of the car that had passed.
"What?", asked Darrin.
"I don't know. I got a bad feeling. I gotta find Sue.", said Axl getting out.
The other two boys said goodbye and drove away as Axl went inside. The house was empty and still.
"Sue?", he said only to dust.
He looked down the halls and in the rooms but didn't find anyone.
For extra measure Axl opened the sliding glass door to the backyard. With one step outside he looked around seeing only the debris ridden pool and a rustling dead tree having its brittle leaves claimed by the brown grass.
He turned around to go back inside as his mind took a double take. He swallowed hard with widened eyes and his heart beating faster than it should've.
"S-sue?".
Sue was crumbled. She lay curled up with her arms holding her torso and her back against the house. The echo of thousands of gone tears stained her red puffed cheeks. Blood dripped down her skin running by a swollen left eye and a blue split lip. Dirtied and ripped clothes left much of her skin exposed to the frozen air. Her eyes were only slits covered in a glaze of beckoning unconsciousness.
As she drifted in and out she distantly heard a familiar voice yelling for someone. Axl had heard the front door open and shut just then.
"DAD!", Axl yelled with panic.
Mike ran out immediately stopping in his tracks with shock. He then swiftly picked her up carrying her in quickly toward her bedroom. Axl followed right behind him.
Frankie swore asking what happened with fear wavering her voice.
"Get the first aid kit Frankie and keep Brick in the living room.", said Mike.
She did what he said as quick as she could.
"Dad I-", started Axl having no words to finish the sentence.
"Axl get a hot wet rag to get rid of some of this blood.", ordered Mike.
Axl ditched the crutches hobbling quickly. He wiped away the red that slowly stopped dripping down her face. Mike cursed under his breath finding two of the fingers on her left hand to be purple and swollen. Though he could tell they had only been sprained. With medical tape he wrapped them with experience from memory.
"I don't think she needs stitches. Use one of the small bow shaped strips to tape shut that gash.", said Mike examining her bruised cheekbone.
Only when Mike had leaned too close to her ribs did they realize they'd been bruised. It woke her up with a gasp of pain.
Mike quickly gave her the big ice pack as she ungrit her teeth. Her red-rimmed agonized eyes didn't look like they wanted to be open at all.
Mike carefully used a whole spool of bandage to wrap her torso, securing her ribs best he could.
Axl looked through her dresser for a fresh set of pajamas, avoiding her eyes and broken soul.
Mike of course was furious, he had a billion questions. Everyone did. All they'd gotten out of Axl so far was that she got beat up by mad football fans or students or something. He'd never been so frazzled. But Mike had to be a strong safe bouy for her to hang onto. Now wasn't the time for questions or murder.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?", asked Mike.
Sue bit her lip to stop from crying and couldn't get out an answer.
Axl and Mike looked at each other and back at her. "What is it?", asked Mike.
"My shoulder. I-I think it's popped out.", she said with a rough voice.
Axl and Mike looked at each other again. That must've been so painful. And putting it back in place would be even worse.
"I can put it back in place, or we can still go to the hospital. It's your choice Sue-shine.", he said calling her the old nostalgic nick name from when she was little. She tried her best to smile.
Sue shook her head. "I trust you dad.", she said bravely. He nodded an okay.
"Axl get something for her to bite down on.", said Mike as he did so.
A rolled up pair of clean socks sat between her teeth as Axl held her hand.
"You know Brad said 1D is breaking up.", said Mike.
With Sue's eye's wide and distracted Mike popped the dislocated shoulder back in place. Sue's muffled scream was curdling and you could tell by her fluttering eyelids she had almost passed out.
"It's back in place.", said Mike. He was very proud but very much scarred. "Don't worry 1D is stronger than ever. You know I'd have been freaking out.", he joked.
As she breathed heavy and traumatized for life, she couldn't help but smile while breathing uneven through the pain so breaking she knew she'd never forget it.
Axl lowered her chin reminding her to untighten her jaw and let go of the socks permanently indented by her teeth. She leaned back on the pillow letting her head sink into it. Any energy or bravery left in her body was completely sucked out in those few seconds.
Her battered clothes and freezing skin made Mike take the pajamas from Axl and hand them to her. Both men turned around giving her all the time she needed to change.
Half an hour passed by as Mike talked to Frankie in the kitchen and Axl slowly brushed through Sue's tangled hair. She layed on her side, her head unable to be lifted from the pillow.
"Axl...", she started already slipping from stability. "I'm sorry. I tried to lay low but...".
Then Axl stopped halfway down her head with the brush.
"Sue I...this is all because of me. Everything. As if you didn't have enough against you. I would give up my foot forever if I could go back in time and stop this from happening. To stop myself from treating you the way I have. Like this morning I don't know what's wrong with me. How have I gotten so used to yelling at you? When I saw you laying there I thought you were...I mean I didn't even know if you were...you know tomorrow zombies or war could change the whole world and burn everything to the ground. Then all we'd have left after everything was each other. Football doesn't mean much after that. I just need to make sure I don't lose you.", finished Axl with a foreign lump in his throat.
Sue sat up turning around as they hugged tightly. The floodgates opened as she wept into his shoulder. He himself found teardrops slipping off his nose from bloodshot eyes that were forever stained in guilty regret.
By the next week everyone in town knew what had happened. At least people sort of knew who she was now. And if they didn't Axl would make sure they did. The school intercom beeped as ears peeked to listen.
"This is Axl Heck. There's a rumor going around that my sister, Sue Heck, ran over my foot taking me out of football. Well I'm here to squash that rumor. And if I hear even a threat from a mile away, me and the entire Orson High football team will destroy your entire life. You'll be so deformed that your own mother won't be able to recognize you, I can promise you that.".
Detention for a week was completely worth it as Sue beemed at her desk.
