Marilla Ragna, 19
Ex District Four Tribute
Victor of the Thirty-First Annual Hunger Games
Despite her victory, Marilla couldn't help but wonder about the fate of the other tributes. As the hovercraft landed in the Capitol, she had no knowledge of what happened to them. It was possible that they were eliminated by the Capitol, as they had the power to dispose of individuals swiftly. Marilla understood that in the Hunger Games, only one person could emerge as the ultimate victor.
Returning to District Four, Marilla was warmly welcomed by her community, who celebrated her triumph and added her to their collection of victors. She moved into a victor's estate with her own family, bringing them immense joy. Although it took some time to adjust to her newfound life of luxury, Marilla quickly adapted. Gone were the days of worrying about hunger and thirst, as she now had an abundance of food and water to sustain her in the challenging district life.
As the annual victor's dinner party in the Capitol approached, Marilla made preparations. She traveled to the Capitol hotel a day prior to the event and decided to spend the night there. The thought of meeting the other victors filled her with disbelief and excitement. Marilla had always admired those who had rightfully won their games. However, she couldn't help but feel apprehensive about encountering Rubica again. Marilla held a strong dislike for Rubica due to her jealousy and malicious behavior. It was common knowledge that Rubica was nothing more than a troublemaker, and she felt the same animosity towards Marilla. In fact, Marilla had heard rumors from Maylis that Rubica had been spreading falsehoods about her. Such immaturity was disappointing to witness.
Marilla was astonished by the fact that Rubica went out of her way to badmouth her, but strangely enough, it made Marilla feel good. It was almost like having a fan. To Marilla, any kind of news, even if it was negative, was still considered good news. The main issue Marilla had with Rubica was her tendency to betray others. One moment she would act like a loyal friend, and the next she would spread lies about them. Marilla couldn't forget how much of a brown-noser Rubica was towards the president, gamemakers, and government officials. Tonight, Marilla decided to simply ignore Rubica's foolishness and enjoy her first victor's party.
After finishing styling her hair and dressing up elegantly, Marilla left her hotel room. She had arranged to meet Maylis outside, where a limousine would be waiting to take them to the party. Marilla had actually become close friends with Maylis. Unlike most career victors, Maylis was genuinely kind and sweet to everyone, regardless of their personality. Marilla felt that having someone like Maylis in her life was exactly what she needed. Marilla stepped out of the hotel doors and greeted Maylis with a warm smile when she saw her waiting outside.
"Hey Maylis, how are you doing?" Marilla said, embracing the victor gently.
"I'm doing great, thank you for asking. And how about yourself?" Maylis replied, returning the hug.
"Well, I'm doing as well as can be expected. I'm feeling a bit nervous about the party..." Marilla confessed with a sigh.
"Don't worry, Marilla. I was nervous for my first party too, but once it started, I had a blast. I'm sure you'll have a great time as well." Maylis reassured her, placing a comforting hand on Marilla's shoulder.
"I hope so." Marilla replied with a smile as the limousine arrived to pick them up.
Shortly after arriving at the party, the girls discovered the other victors. Marilla warmly greeted them and engaged in brief conversations to familiarize herself with them. She had to acknowledge that Maylis was correct; Marilla was genuinely enjoying herself. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted when Rubica entered the room. Marilla's attention was immediately drawn to the tall, black-haired woman, and she sensed trouble approaching. Nevertheless, Marilla was always prepared for challenges. Having weathered numerous sea storms in District Four, she knew better than to succumb to them.
"Well, well, if it isn't the new girl. My Marilla, you look absolutely stunning," Rubica remarked, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"What do you desire, Rubica?" Marilla responded to the girl with an emotionless demeanor.
"Oh, nothing at all. What could I possibly want from you?" Rubica retorted, bursting into loud giggles.
"Well, considering your obsession with me, I simply had to inquire," Marilla replied, a smirk playing on her lips.
"You're such a bitch, and for what?" Rubica began to feign tears.
"You really shouldn't cry; it only makes you appear unattractive," Marilla stated, calmly walking away from her.
"Hey, bitch! I'm not finished talking to you!" Rubica screamed.
"Well, I am. Go and manipulate your puppets. Just refrain from speaking to me," Marilla retorted.
"You don't get to walk away from me, you bitch! Do you even know who I am?" Rubica's tone filled with anger.
"Yes, a deranged bitch," Marilla responded coolly.
Rubica was left speechless, emitting only a frustrated groan before storming off. Marilla couldn't help but smile to herself; she relished in the fact that Rubica was bothered by her. That girl deserved every misfortune that came her way. Normally, Marilla wouldn't treat others in such a manner, but she had reached her limit with Rubica's nonsense. Regardless of what Rubica said, Marilla no longer cared.
Food and wine were served to the tables shortly after Marilla and Rubica's outburst, and there was still an air of unease among everyone. Marilla understood why they felt that way and didn't hold it against them. She sat next to Maylis, both of them lacking any appetite after the altercation. Marilla felt a wave of nausea, so she remained seated while the other victors continued to celebrate. The look on Maylis's face indicated that she felt sick as well. Marilla hoped that Maylis wasn't angry with her after the fight.
The group of victors carried on with their festivities, thoroughly enjoying themselves. Then, out of nowhere, Marilla heard a sound she never expected to hear again - death. Several victors, including Rubica, began choking violently, their mouths foaming with saliva and their bodies convulsing.
"What in the world is happening?!" Marilla exclaimed in shock.
"I- I- don't know," Maylis stammered, her eyes wide with disbelief at the unfolding events.
One by one, the victors collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud. The expressions on their faces turned lifeless, and Marilla knew they were dying. She watched as Rubica fell alongside the others. Her enemy was now gone, but how?
Suddenly, peacekeepers stormed into the room and ordered Marilla and Maylis to kneel. Reluctantly, the girls complied as the peacekeepers investigated the scene. It was revealed that the wine they had been served was laced with botulinum toxin. Marilla had countless questions. Who had poisoned the wine? How had she managed to escape death once again? Was the poisoned wine meant for her? She had no answers. All she knew was that seventeen of Panem's esteemed victors had perished. She and Maylis were among the fifteen survivors who had avoided consuming the tainted wine. They were all shaken by the ordeal, including Marilla and Maylis. The biggest question weighing on Marilla's mind was who could commit such a heinous act against these victors.
Marilla understood that she would never find the answer to her question.
