Erin groaned as she heard the almost angry sound of her phone ringing in the middle of the night. Groggily, she sat up in bed and blindly grasped for the device, answering it quickly as David started to stir beside her. "Hello?"
"Erin, I know that it's late, but we have a situation here in New York."
Aaron's serious tone immediately drove the sleep from her mind and she shook David's shoulder to get him to wake up quicker. "What sort of situation?" she asked as she got out of bed and went over to the dresser, pulling out fresh undergarments and setting them on top of it before shimmying out of her panties. "Aaron?"
"John followed me to New York. Or maybe he headed there right after Elise's lesson on Saturday. I'm not really certain of the timetable. All I know is that Sean has been charged with murder, as his girlfriend bled out from a doctored MDMA overdose. Only, there's no way that Sean could have done that."
"Wait, was it in her wine?" she asked as she put him on speaker so that she could get changed and talk at the same time.
"Yes, which connects back to the Philadelphia case. I've been trying to tell the cops that, but they're not too keen to believe me just yet, despite the fact that I worked on that case. Look, I need you to get Dave and team up here. I think that this may be his big move to get us all into a place where he feels comfortable. Why else would he follow us up here?"
"I don't know, Aaron. And since it's so late, it will take us a while to get there, I hope you realise."
"Of course, I know that you'll need time to call the team into the bullpen, brief them, and then get on the jet. But just knowing that you're going to arrive here as soon as possible will set my heart more at ease."
"I know. And we'll take care of this as soon as we can. I promise you, I won't let John pin any of his crimes on your brother. Sean's too good a man for that to happen." She pulled out a soft blouse and tugged it on over her head. "Now, I need to call Jessica to give her a head's up about us heading to New York, so she can come take care of the children in the morning. And then, we'll start calling people in. Stay safe, do you hear me? Elise needs her Uncle Aaron."
"Elise also needs her mama, Erin."
"I know. And we'll be careful. I will talk to you soon, and give you an update."
"And I'll send all the information that I can to the bullpen so that you can hold the briefing as soon as you all gather." There was a short pause. "Erin?"
"Yes?"
"I know that you have me on speaker, so that Dave can hear this, too, but I love you. Not the same way that I love Beth, or that you love Dave, but for some reason, I just have this urge to let you know."
Erin didn't want to comment on the fatalistic undertone to that particular admission, though she did lean back against David's chest as she drew in a few long breaths. "We're just letting this case get to us, Aaron. Everything will be all right. Now, I need to finish dressing, and you need to send that information in to us."
"Yes. I'll see you all soon."
Erin ended the call and then turned to look up into her husband's serious face. "This is bad, stellina."
"It is, but we have to stay calm for our kids and for Aaron. Now, you heard most of that conversation. Will you start calling the team while I call Jessica?"
"Of course," he replied before pressing a kiss to the top of her head. She smiled a little before drifting over to the bed and taking a seat, pressing Jessica's number before bringing the phone back to her ear.
"Erin? What's wrong?"
She exhaled a long breath, grateful that Jessica wasn't angry with her. "Jessie, I need to head to New York."
"Did something happen to Aaron?"
"In a tangential way. John has managed to make it look like Sean murdered his girlfriend with spiked wine, in an exact copy of what happened in Philadelphia a few weeks ago. As soon as we rouse the team, we're all headed into the bullpen before taking the jet north. I'm going to wake Karen before we leave and have her get Leelee and Cathy up, but I need you to look after them until we return."
Jessica let out a choked sob, and Erin wished that they were in the same room so that she could hug her friend. "That's too close to you, Erin."
"I know, but we're going to take every precaution, I promise. I love you, Jessie."
"That sounds too final, Erin. I, I don't want to say that back to you, because maybe that means you won't come back home. But I'll feel guilty if I don't tell you that, because I never got to say those words to Haley one last time. Dammit, Erin, promise me that you won't take any risks. I can't lose another sister like that. I love you too much for that to happen."
Erin swiped away a few tears as she nodded. "I promise you, I will come home. I can't leave my children, my family, like that. I won't." She took a deep breath. "But I have to go. We're losing precious time, and if I am going to bring John down, I need as much of that on my side as possible."
"I understand. And I will take care of your children until you're home again."
Erin hung up before they could say more, knowing that she would just continue to talk to Jessica if she didn't force herself to end the call. Looking over at David, she licked her lips before asking, "Who's left to call?"
"I left you with Jayje and Kitten. I still have to get ahold of Reid and Morgan. Blake is on her way in."
Nodding, she looked up Agent Jareau's number, hurriedly explaining why she was calling so early in the morning, and telling her to get into the bullpen as soon as possible. Then it was time to call Penelope, and she braced herself as she dialed the woman's number. "You had better have a damn good reason to call me so early in the morning," the younger woman growled out, and Erin let out a shocked trill of laughter. "Erin? Oh my god, I didn't look at the caller id before I answered, I am so sorry! I didn't mean to be so rude."
"It's all right, I nearly took Aaron's head off when he called me a few minutes ago. There, there's been movement in the Replicator case, and Aaron needs our help. We're flying out to New York as soon as I've briefed everyone on what's happened, and then we're going to bring that bastard to justice. I will not allow him to terrorize any more of us."
"I will be there as soon as I can, then, Erin. And you're right, we will finally bring him down, and he will not hurt any more people that I love. Stay safe."
"Everyone keeps telling me that," she whispered as she hung up, slipping the phone into her cardigan pocket as she looked at David, giving him a small nod. "All right, I'll grab my go bag, and tell Karen what's going on, and then we can head in. And I mean it, David. Only one of us is coming out of this alive, and I am not about to allow it to be him." Ignoring the look he gave her, Erin went over and grabbed her bag before leaving the room, knowing that their day of reckoning was finally at hand.
