It was only a couple weeks ago that the weather was warm around this part of the city. But with the transformation of summer into autumn that came every year, the temperatures changed into the most ideal for just about everybody out and about. The spell had been casted upon the formerly virescent green leaves from the trees, changing them into scarlet and shades of yellow that made them look as if they had been gilded. The leaves continuously made their descent to both the encircling sidewalks and the ground below, twirling in circles in the air that started to become chillier than before.

It was the commencement of what many considered to be one of the prettiest of the four seasons.

It was the official start of the equinox in which nature transiently displayed its most elegant colors.

It was the beginning of pumpkins galore and pumpkin spice being incorporated into everything for mammals in the city.

But for a certain bunny and her fox, autumn marked the beginning of something that might not have been the first thing that came to someone's mind when the season came up.

"Gee," Nick remarked, "the scenery really changed overnight. Unbe-leaf-able, isn't it?"

In their particular case, this time of year was also the start of the outpour of puns. The flood of attempted wittiness.

Judy could only shake her head at his remark as the two of them carried on with their stroll through the park, both of them enjoying the autumn-flavored lattes from the nearby Snarlbuck's while they did so. "Already broke into the vault of jokes for fall, I see?" she replied.

"There was a couple that just needed to be told sooner than later, especially with how nice the first day of it has been so far."

The bunny beside him let out a cheerful chortle. "Normally you don't start telling them until later in the season," she said, smiling softly back at him.

Nick looked over at her with an ear-to-ear smirk, witticism incoming. "And I know that one was kinda predictable, though. But what can I say? My humor at times can be pretty acorn-y."

Another small chuckle arose from Judy. "Did you have all of these devised in advance?"

"Yes, one hundred percent," the vulpine responded. He looked over at his bunny before looking out at the path ahead of them, putting on a concerned expression. "Did we already walk through this part of the park a little bit earlier?"

"No, we're going the right direction," the doe assured. "You don't think I'm gonna get the two fo us lost, do you?"

Nick wiped his forehead with a look of relief on his muzzle. "I was getting a little corn-fused about which way we were going for a second."

"Oh my gourd," Judy muttered with a deep sigh, only to realize what she had said accidentally with her mind thinking about her companion's puns. "Er, I mean…"

The fox cheerfully laughed for a short moment. "Were you just trying to out-pun me there, Carrots?" he asked slyly.

"I was thinking of those jokes and then I accidentally said it," his companion explained.

Nick grinned in her direction. "Methinks you were up to a battle of who's got the better puns."

"What? No, I-I…" Judy grunted under her breath and turned her head away, her gaze returning back out to what was ahead of her.

An absence of words being spoken came over the two of them, the only sound just then being the leaves rustling against the ground as the wind rolled along by. Nick looked back over at the bunny with concern evident in his eyes. "Carrots," he said. "I'm sorry if my jokes were getting a little out of paw there."

The doe turned her head towards him and responded, "It's perfectly pine." Starting to radiantly beam as she suddenly laughed out loud. "Get it? Pine instead of fine?"

The fox realized in that split second that he had directly fallen for her punny trap, like a fly getting caught in the web of a spider. "You got me with that one, you sly bunny," he said to her admittedly, laughing alongside her at how he had been hustled.

"Yeah, you fell for that one pretty easily," Judy replied in agreement.

"I won't even chai to deny it," Nick said in response. A few seconds after making that quick quip, he asked, "My puns aren't becoming bothersome already, are they?"

"That's a fall-acy," his bunny answered, her amethyst eyes happily looking back at him. "Keep the jokes comin'. We've got a little bit more of a walk 'til we get to that spot we can sit down at."

"Very well. Just don't say I didn't warn ya about how sappy they'd be."

"The sun setting against the autumn sky," Judy said dreamily. "Us getting to sit together and see it will make the ending to this day apple-y ever after."

"Y'know, it's pretty a-maize-ing that I didn't even think of that one myself, Fluff."

The fox and rabbit carried on with their walk, sharing little laughs together as they exchanged jokes back and forth to one another.

Author's Note: Hay there, everybody! Sorry, but I just couldn't help myself. I needed to get one last pun out of my system. XD

*crickets chirping*

Oh well... Anyway, today marks the start of fall and I just needed to write up something quickly with that in mind. While there wasn't that much to this little story, I hope y'all enjoyed it. As always, your feedback, whether good or bad, is gladly appreciated. I'll probably try to come up with some other autumn-themed stories later on, but that'll be after some other things that I already had planned that weren't related to the season.

'Til next time! :)
