Nick had been in the costume store for what felt like forever and he still couldn't find what he was looking for. When he and Judy both received the invitation to the big Halloween costume party that was being held this weekend, he knew that he needed to get his paws on something to wear for the fun event.
The problem that arose, however, was finding what exactly he was going to be wearing.
As he continued to scan the shelves and racks that were on display in the moderately-sized shop, nothing around him was gaining his interest. All of the costumes they had in stock right now were basic and pretty vanilla, if he did say so himself. The last thing he wanted to do was wear something that the others were most likely to be wearing to. He needed to find something that was unique, unlike what everything else he looked at so far was.
Nick made his way back over to where the checkout counter was, quickly browsing at some of the other costumes that were currently on sale. One of which that he observed in that moment was a standard skeleton outfit, which he thought was a bit cliche. Was probably the ones they had here from the previous Halloween, he thought.
The next thing he noticed over there was a fox mask, which would've gotten a good chuckle out of him had it been made in good humor. The tag on the top of it, though, referred to it as a 'Ferocious Fox Mask.' Out of all the words that could have been used to describe his species, Nick shook his head slightly at how the manufacturer thought only of using that one in particular.
However, he was a bit curious about how comical it would be if he wore that over his face, since it would make him a fox dressed up as a fox. He shrugged his shoulders at the idea before he continued to browse through things.
Just when he was about to turn around and walk out of the store, settling for something he could find online, the tod saw something interesting in the corner of his eye. He quickly retraced his steps and walked up to what he saw. "Hello, what do we have here?" he said to himself, picking up the item in its small packaging.
It was then that he had found something after taking a good bit of time to do so. The idea of finding the perfect costume to wear to the party was starting to become a mission, but now he did what he needed to do.
I'm thinkin' we're gonna go with this, he thought. This is something that's pretty unique.
Two Days Later…
All of his good friends had arrived, the snacks were served, and the upbeat music was playing around the space. Taking a step inside, Nick saw that the party was definitely in full swing. Everybody was having a good time so far, big smiles plastered onto their faces, and he was ready to join in on the fun that he possibly missed getting here. If it wouldn't have been for the stupid traffic around Sahara Square, he would have gotten to where he needed to be much quicker than he did.
There was no need to fret anymore about the congestion of the vehicles on the district's roads, though, even if it had been a bit of pain to get through before he was given a faster route to take. All of that was now put aside for the rest of the evening, which was sure to be a great one with all of his good friends being here.
Dressed in what he had found at the costume shop beforehand, Nick casually walked into the spacious room where everyone seemed to be. Guests looked over at him with peculiar expressions on their faces and raised eyebrows. Those that he didn't know—probably friends with his and Judy's friends—that were talking to one another paused in the midst of their discussion, some pointed towards him, and he even heard one not-so-quietly whisper about his "unusual getup."
With all of the attention being sent in his direction right now, the vulpine simply grinned and continued to walk around, trying to find out where Judy was at the moment. The music got gradually further away as he walked along.
The rabbit he ended up bumping into instead was his friend Jack. The striped buck was dressed up in a robe that looked like the regal kind a king would don, and he also had a crown resting on the top of his head. The look he gave the fox when he walked up was one that gave off the impression of surprise.
"Hey there," Jack said to him shortly afterwards.
"I thought you were gonna go with that secret agent costume you were telling me about before," Nick remarked in response. "You were gonna call yourself Agent Savage."
"Yeah, but then I changed my mind." Pointing a paw at him, the jackrabbit added, "I don't think I've ever seen a costume worn to one of these parties quite like the one you got on."
"Well, I was trying to go for something that wasn't on the cliche side," Nick replied. "Pretty happy with this one."
The vulpine turned his head towards a statement mirror that was on the wall above a black table with some decorations on it, getting a look at how he looked in the costume he got from that store. What he chose that day was a bodysuit that matched his russet fur and made him look like he had large sculpted muscles on his chest. The sleeves of the muscle suit went clear across his entire arm, creating the illusion that he had even bigger biceps.
Nick flexed an arm in the mirror like he was lifting a weight, unable to hold back a chuckle at how he looked wearing that. "I know it isn't exactly what you'd call realistic," he said, "since us foxes couldn't become this muscular in real life, but I think I made a good selection when it came to this costume. Can't believe they only had one of these in stock."
"Just don't try to wear that during some kind of undercover mission," Jack advised jokingly. "You're cover might be blown before you obtain any info."
"They might not think anything of it, Jack. Wolford went undercover wearing that sheep costume awhile back and nobody thought he was conspicuous at all. And he was a literal wolf in sheep's cloth." After Nick laughed alongside the buck at that remark, he asked, "Say, do you know where Judy went?"
"I think she's over by the punch bowl the last time I saw her," answered Jack. "I don't know for certain."
The fox nodded his head and walked over in the direction of the decorated table, a large bowl of punch and glasses for serving perfectly laid out on top of it. No sign of the bunny over here; it was just him and some tiger that was a guest here at the party. Judy had to be somewhere else at the moment.
"How's the party, Slick?" he then heard that familiar voice of her say from directly behind her. It was as if she knew he was thinking about her just then.
"Oh, it's pretty nice so far-" As Nick turned himself around to look back at her, he lost his words upon seeing the costume she wore to this gathering.
Much to his surprise, he saw that Judy's choice for her costume was very similar to what he had on, but was a bit different when it came to how she looked and how it was sized for her height. She was wearing a lavender shirt that looked casual, but the long sleeves of it were the same gray color as her fur and went clear down to her paws. Just like with his bodysuit, her outfit made it look as if she had unrealistically well-built muscles on her arms, burlier than what would be possible for any rabbit to possess no matter how often they lifted weights.
Shrugging as if she were uncomfortable, she remarked "This outfit take some getting used to. It's a bit awkward trying to walk normally with these 'muscles' that it puts on your shoulders."
"I see we both visited the same costume store in town," Nick said to her.
"I went over there as soon as I accepted the invitation to come here," the doe explained. "I saw this while I was browsing around and instantly knew that I just had to get it. Wanted to do something different for everybody else, you know?"
Nick could do nothing but chuckle, still remaining slightly amazed at this unanticipated coincidence. That was exactly what he was thinking when he got his outfit two days ago.
I guess, he thought, great minds really do think alike.
Author's Note: Hey there, readers! I came across some short stories that I previously started to work on that remained incomplete, with this one in particular being the one I wanted to get finished. Since it's the start of October and Halloween is coming up pretty soon, I thought it would be a good idea to share this story about a Halloween costume party.
I hope you all enjoy another one of these silly little stories of mine. As always, let me know what your thoughts are on this. Your feedback, whether good or bad, is gladly appreciated.
'Til next time! :)
