Judy was still somewhat tired after her alarm started to buzz, interrupting the spell of silence that filled the bedroom several moments before. Rather than snoozing it for the third time, she reached her arm to the nightstand and stopped the sound from continuing.
The daylight brightly peeked into the room as if the heavens were opening up, and it took a moment for the groggy bunny's eyes to acclimate to it. Her ears drooped over her face as she pulled herself up, yawning while she got in a good stretch. It was a very seldom occasion for her to sleep in until this point in the morning, but today was a different case.
She and her partner on the force had taken the duty of keeping the New Year's Spectacular at Savannah Central fun and safe for everyone. Rather than counting down the New Year while simply watching it on television, they got to see it for themselves in the flesh while providing help to mammals at the event when they needed it. The two of them had been busy making sure the gathered crowds remained under control even after the clocks struck midnight, as the celebration went on for two hours after the countdown was finished.
The addition onto the paycheck, though, made staying up that late and dealing with such a busy event worth while.
Judy rubbed her paws over her eyes and decided it was about time for her to get up and start the day. After giving herself a moment to completely wake up, her usual peppiness returned to her shortly.
Time to start another year off on a positive, she thought optimistically, knowing that today started this new year of continuing to help the city she loved stay out of harm's way.
The gentlest of knocks could be heard being made against the closed door a short distance away, and Judy looked over in that direction. "Who is it?" she joked with a smile, though she obviously knew that it could only be one mammal.
"I have a special delivery for Judy Hopps," her fox remarked from the other side of the door. "Just wait one moment and I'll be right there."
The rabbit giggled under her breath. The closed door started to gently open a few seconds later, and a certain vulpine carefully tiptoed into the room while holding onto a black tray.
"Here you go, Carrots," he said to the bunny as he slowly walked over to her and placed the tray in front of her.
She looked at what he had just set in front of her with a wide smile of surprise now across her muzzle. Her fox had made her a special breakfast in bed.
The tray had a plate with a stack of pancakes with syrup poured on top of them, a side of fruit salad that had berries and pieces of pineapple, and a cup of coffee that had steam emitting from the mug it was being served in. The smell of the freshly brewed beverage mixed with the sweet scent of the pancakes filled the room, and she could not wait to dig in and try what he made her for herself.
The first thing she did, though, was drink some of the coffee she always had to start the day. She nodded her head as she took a sip from it. "Brewed just the way I like it," she remarked merrily.
"I'm no Snarlbuck's barista," Nick replied, "but I've heard that the dark roast is best enjoyed at its peak temperature."
"Well, in that case, I'll drink exactly that way." Judy lifted the mug off the tray and held it up as if she were making a toast with it, taking a second and much-longer sip from the rich coffee. She then started to dig into the stack of fluffy pancakes Nick made for her, nodding her head with delight.
The fox had a bit of relief coming over him. "I tried to make them with the same recipe my mother used when she made the family breakfast, but I totally didn't inherit any of her cooking skills."
"Nonsense," Judy said with a shake of her head. "These pancakes are probably some of the best I've had in quite some time."
Nick held a paw to his chest as if he were honored by the compliment. "Well, that's surely high praise."
The doe wiped her mouth off with the napkin to her side and smiled back at over at her fox. "Did I do anything special in particular to receive such a pleasant surprise?" she inquired.
With a happy grin, Nick answered, "Being the best companion in the entire world, always believing in me, making me smile even on the rainiest of days." He counted them on his fingers as he said this to her. "Heck, that's only naming three of the reasons. I know this was a simple thing to do for you, but it's part of the New Year resolution I made the night before."
"I've never really stuck to any of those I've made in the past," remarked Judy upon him mentioning that to her. "All those fad diets I tried awhile back were good for about a week before I grew tired of them." She shook her head as she started remembering some of those. "That gluten-free bread I tried then tasted like I was eating cardboard."
"I've never stuck to any of my old ones either," the tod admitted. "This one, though, will be one that I'll keep no matter what comes our way."
"And what's that?"
Nick slowly stepped his way towards where Judy was sitting, giving her a heartfelt hug. "To give the beautiful bunny in front of me more love than ever. Give her support when she's down, help her when problems arise, and make her smile when things get bleak. Call me biased, but I think that could go down in the record books as the best resolution anybody could make."
Judy's smile became warmer and more radiant as she looked up at him, her purple eyes aglow. "You know, that's the very same resolution that I made last night."
"Happy New Year, Fluff..." Nick leaned over and gave her a kiss on her cheek.
"As long as you're here beside me, every year will be a happy year." Judy smiled as she leaned her head beside him,
The fox chuckled. "And it'll be the same for me as long as you're standing beside me. Can't wait to make so many more great memories with you this year."
The two promised to themselves internally to keep that no matter what came to pass in the months to come. It might have been the same resolutions that they made every year since they were together, but just as Nick said, it was best one that anyone could make.
Author's Note: My first story I wrote to ring in the New Year! Woot woot! :D
I hope you all enjoy this little story of mine. I know this was one was rather simplistic, but I just wanted to kick off the year with something short and sweet about our favorite fox and bunny. :)
As always, let me know what your thoughts are on this. Your feedback, whether good or bad, is gladly appreciated.
'Til next time, everybody! :)
