As they set up their things in the middle of the sandy strip of land, the colorful parasol gave the pair of fox and rabbit the perfect amount of shade. While they finished unfolding the tropically-patterned chairs they had gotten that was at the surf-style shop not far from them, one of many smaller ones like in the span of a few miles, it was nothing but smiles for both of them.
Neither of them could have decided on a more perfect time to hit the beach then right now. It wasn't too hot, the nice breeze blowing in was perfect, and it wasn't overloaded with a crowds of vacationers like at the other beaches when the season for tourists was upon it. It couldn't get any better than the two of them just enjoying those soothing sights that only being by the ocean could provide, listening to the sounds of the tides breaking on the shore.
"All done," Nick said as he adjusted the umbrella in the sand, walking back over to Judy as she finished placing things where she wanted them.
The rabbit in her fuscia bikini was setting her chair close to where the fox's was when he walked over to her. She gazed out at the water before looking gleefully grinning at him. "What do you say, Slick? Perfect spot?"
The tod in his trademark Pawaiian outfit, matching perfectly with the scenery of the beach around him, gave her a fist bump. "Perfect spot," he agreed.
"And it's only a short walk away from where we're staying," replied Judy matter-of-factly as she looked back at where they had took a short walk from. What she stared back at was the coastal house, painted a charcoal gray, that sat at the start of a grassy passageway that led right to where they were now. "Be sure to thank Finnick for me for finding us this place."
"Yeah, normally I'm the guy that knows a guy when it comes to finding things like this," Nick responded, "but this time it was him that knew that local. He might not know everybody like yours truly, but I'll give him credit where credit's due."
Judy's laughter was as warm as the sun as she started to take a stroll down the beach that remained practically empty in that moment, Nick joining her at her side as she did so.
Although she had been to quite a few different beaches since moving to Zootopia, there was something about exploring them that always brought her happiness even though all of them shared the same likeness of being sand and water. With the vacation time the two of them had been given, though, somewhere more serene was really what they were looking for.
A quaint and more private destination was on their itinerary from the time their vacation started.
So far, this place certainly delivered what they were hoping for.
Nick couldn't help but acquiesce whenever Judy would stop and compliment about the beautiful oceanic sights around her, knowing that that was exactly what he was thinking in the back of his mind as well. "The best part of taking a vacation," he started to say. "Without a doubt, it's definitely got to be-"
"No being assigned parking duty by Bogo?" returned Judy with a grin, assuming that that was what he was about to say given his track record of disliking whenever that came about in his work with her.
The vulpine nodded, happily agreeing with her on that. "Yeah, that's true." Turning his head to look over at the bunny, he continued, "But I was actually going to say seeing you smile and getting to spend time somewhere relaxing with you."
Whenever he saw his bunny smile, he smiled. That was just a universal truth. Today was no exception to this known rule, as thosewere ever-present on both of their muzzles as they leisurely wandered down the yellowish-brown sands together.
Something managed to catch the eye of the rabbit to his right, and she started to run further down towards where the water spattered towards the edge of the seashore. Nick slowly followed her as she went over and picked up something before waving back at him to come and see what she had discovered over there.
"What did ya find, Carrots?" he inquired.
Judy turned around, grinning like she was a young kit that just received an amazing surprise. In her paws that she held out in front of her was a large spindle seashell that was all white on the outside with some fleck of other pale colors on it. All of the shells she had seen washed up along the beach so far had been very tiny or were just fragments of one that was a bit bigger, so finding one of this sort manage to catch her completely by surprise.
If there was a space within the suitcase she had brought with her on the trip, she would definitely be taking this back home when she and Nick made the drive back to the city.
"That's a pretty big one," remarked Nick as he got a closer look at the shell she was holding.
Judy nodded her head before looking back up at him. "You know, my grandmother always used to say if you put a shell like this one up to your ear, you could hear the sounds of the ocean calling you. Never found one like this until now to see if that's true. "
"Well, see if it works," suggested the fox.
She held it up to her floppy ear. In actuality, she could hear the sounds of the water and everything else around her become more reflected when she did so. "Judy Hopps speaking," she said jokingly, as if she was introducing herself when a call from someone came through on her phone. "Yes..."
"Well, what are they saying?" Nick asked as he leaned in, pretending to hear in on a conversation.
Judy looked over at him as she cupped the shell, pretending like she was muffling what could be heard on the other end. "Hold on a moment, Nick," she returned before holding the shell to her ear once again, grinning as she carried on with the shenanigan. "What was that again? Okay... Do I know that the fox next to me is the most handsome mammal in the whole world?" She looked back at the tod with grin. "Yes, yes, I do. You hear that, Slick? Even the ocean itself can agree with me on that."
Nick nodded back at the sly bunny. "Well, the ocean can't be wrong," he remarked, "especially when it comes to has naturally good looks." He flexed his muscles with a grin like he was a bodybuilder, although he knew that he was not as muscular as some of the other weightlifting-obsessed mammals out there that did. "Been pumping iron lately. Can you tell, Fluff?"
The doe chuckled in response before handing the shell over to him with a smile. "Here," she said. "It's for you too."
The vulpine reached for the shell from her and held it up to his ear, going along with the shenanigan of his companion. "Hello?" he said. "Yes, this is Mr, Wilde... Yeah... Do I know that the bunny next to me is the-"
"I hope the ocean knows that you shouldn't call a bunny cute," interrupted Judy with a smirk.
"Most beautiful bunny in the world was actually what they were saying," continued Nick. "And do I know that?" He smiled warmly at the gray lagomorph. "I sure do. No doubts about it."
Judy happily took the shell back from him and held onto as she started to walk up closer to him, making a reminder to herself to see if there was some room in her suitcase to take it back home when they had to make the drive back to the city when their vacation was over. She wasn't going to think about having to do that and it concluding for now, though. Instead, she was going to enjoy every moment like this while it lasted, not worry about time and make new memories with her fox. "Come on, Nick," she said to him. "Let's head back up to our chairs and soak up some sunshine."
"There's nothing else I'd rather do, Carrots," replied Nick in agreement.
Author's Note: "Did you really write another beach-themed story?" I hear you ask.
Yes, yes, I did. XD
I know that it's still winter, but I just can't help but have fun writing anything that takes place on the beach or has a summery feel to it.
After I just did another one awhile back that featured the Ottertons with Nick and Judy having a brief appearance near the end of it, I knew that I wanted to do another one of sorts that was just about the fox and rabbit with no other characters. Pretty short, I know, but just wanted to try to come up with a little story with an attempt at fluff after not writing anything for a short spell.
Oh, and something else I'm pretty excited about that I'll try to contain enthusiasm about. *takes a deep breath in* ZOOTOPIA IS GETTING A SEQUEL! WOOT WOOT! When I first heard about it, I couldn't actually believe that it was true. Pretty exciting news if you ask me and it couldn't come any sooner. :D
Anyway, as always, your thoughts, whether good or bad, are gladly appreciated. I've got some other, much-better stories that I'm in the process of writing out, so I'll be sharing them as soon as I can. Thanks to everyone who's been reading and keeping up with my stories. It means a lot to me. :)
'Til next time, everyone!
