The sun bathed Zootopia in a gentle golden glow, casting long shadows across Judy Hopps' apartment. She was in the throes of preparing for something that came about without any anticipation over the week. It had been brought to her attention about how the mayor of the city had announced a grand unveiling, an event that would bring together all the mammals from various districts of the city. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, the dynamic duo from the Zootopia Police Department, had been selected to represent the force at this occasion.
Where there was a visit from someone important like this, of course, came the much anticipated need to get a picture. And she knew quite well that this picture in question would most likely be seen in the newspaper or an article online within a few days' time. The importance of the visit from Mayor Swinton started to weigh on her, and the wardrobe choices she faced at the moment made her heart race.
In her bedroom, Judy stood before a kaleidoscope of outfits she had pulled from out of the closet. The bed displayed a mesmerizing array of choices, each with its own unique allure. She sighed, her paw running over her collection of different clothing options, wrestling with the nagging desire to wear what she thought would look the best. When it came to these things, making a singular decision out of a multitude of possibilities wasn't exactly a strong suit of hers.
"Judy, are you ready yet?" Nick's voice drifted in from the living room, the sound of footsteps nearing as she heard him making his way there.
The frustration in her present tone was unmistakable as she responded to his inquiry. "In a minute, Nick! I can't decide what to wear."
The vulpine slowly strolled into the room, a sly grin playing on his lips. "Stuck in your usual fashionista's dilemma, aren't you, Carrots?" he remarked as he entered.
Judy shot him a playful glare. "This isn't the time for teasing, Nick," she answered, wagging a finger. "It's kind of a big deal right now."
Nick crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. "Alright, alright. What's the problem? I honestly think they all look good. I mean, that's just my two cents."
The leporine bit her lip, her brows furrowing. "These outfits... Some might make me look a little too serious, and others are gonna make me little too casual. It's... kinda complicated to pick what'll look the best, you know? And we'll probably standing close to the mayor of the city..."
At that moment, the vulpine stepped in closer, his voice softening as he placed a paw gently on his bunny's shoulder. "Judy, you know you'll look great in anything. I have faith in your fashion sense, but if you insist on my expert opinion, I say you can't go wrong with that blue one right there." He pointed towards the navy-colored piece of clothing laying neatly across the edge of the bed in front of him.
Judy considered his suggestion, picking up the garment option and holding it up to her before setting it right back down. "You think so, Nick?"
Nick nodded. "Absolutely. It'll bring out those pretty eyes of yours when we head down to that unveiling. Besides, it's not just about the outfit; it's about the mammal inside it. It's your personality that shines, and you, Judy Hopps, have a charm that no outfit can outshine."
Judy's amethyst eyes softened as she gazed into Nick's. "You really mean that?"
Her russet-furred companion smiled warmly and brushed a strand of her fur behind her ear. "Absolutely, Fluff," he replied with great honesty. "Cross my heart. No matter what, you're the star of the ZPD, and everybody in Zootopia knows that."
She felt her heart flutter as a blush colored her cheeks upon hearing his simple yet truthful sentiment. "You always know what to say, don't you, Nick?"
Nick grinned. "It's one of my many gifts, Carrots."
The doe stood up on her toes before she gave him a quick, light peck on the cheek. "Thank you, Nick. I guess I kinda was overthinking this whole thing, huh?"
Her fox chuckled back under his breath. "Anytime, Carrots," he replied, happy to be there whenever the bunny he loved needed the words of wisdom that would shine through at times. Walking over to the other side of the room, he added, "Now, while we're on the topic of getting ready for this shebang, I need your opinion on something too." He gestured to the array of glass cologne bottles sitting in a neat line on the dresser, picking two of them up and showing them to her.
Judy raised an eyebrow. "Cologne? Seriously?"
"Seriously, Fluff..."
"Nick, is that necessary for a photo?"
The tod smirked mischievously and nodded his head. "Well, a fox has to smell his best, even if no one can tell through a photo."
Judy laughed, shaking her head. "You're impossible, Wilde."
Nick sprayed a bit of cologne and then turned to her with a flourish. "So, Carrots, what do you think? Should we go with 'Sly Fox' or do something different and try this 'Savannah Signature' one? I don't want it to be too overbearing."
Judy couldn't help but chuckle more at his dramatic presentation. "Oh, come on, Nick! It's just a photo. It's not like anyone's going to smell it through the photo in the papers."
Nick grinned, a glint of playful mischief in his eyes. "Ah, but what is life without a little unnecessary flair?"
The gray doe smirked before she went ahead and grabbed her chosen outfit from the bed. "Alright, Mr. Fancy Fox, I'm gonna go with that blue one you were suggesting. It's professional, yet approachable. You're pretty good at picking these things out."
Her fox nodded in approval. "Good choice. Now, let's get ready to head on down to this unveiling..."
Author's Note: Hey there, everyone! :)
Well, here I am with another little slice-of-life moment with our favorite fox and rabbit duo. I know that it's fall and I should probably be getting to some stories that are fitting for the season (as well as a Halloween one or two if time allows), but the prompt fell into my mind and I had to get it written before any of those.
One thing that I'll say very loosely inspired this was most recently seeing Nick and Judy in the Once Upon a Studio short film when I saw it a couple days prior. While the event that they'd be getting a photo with them in it in this story is something happening around Zootopia, I can imagine this would be how they'd be preparing for the photo from the short I mentioned as well. It put such a smile on my face seeing them in it as well as some other familiar faces. :)
As always, let me know what your thoughts are on this. Your feedback, whether good or bad, is gladly appreciated.
'Til next time! :)
