Summary: Missing conversation between Chuck and Blair while they were dancing together in 2x12. What Chuck and Blair could have spoken about while they were dancing together at the Snowflake Ball.
Disclaimer: I don't own gossip girl if I did I would have shown the entirety of their dance even if they didn't say a word.
Blair couldn't contain the smile on her face right now she was exactly where she wanted to be and even though their current relationship status wasn't exactly what she wanted, right now everything felt perfect. She continued to gaze adoringly at the boy who had stolen her heart and noticed his gaze had shifted from being solely focused on her to becoming distant as though his mind had shifted elsewhere.
"What are you thinking about, Bass?" The little laugh he let out at her question made her heart flutter, something about Chuck's laugh perhaps the rarity of it has led to even the lightest chuckle moving her. She knew she had it bad. "You going to answer?"
"The last time we were at a school dance." She raised an eyebrow at that. "Cotilion" He clarified.
"Not exactly the most pleasant memory." She replied and inwardly shuddered at the events of her cotilion.
He frowned then and lowered his gaze. "I know, I'm sorry, I ruined your cotilion, I knew how much it meant to you. But I put my own selfish feelings above yours." He spoke sincerely and it shocked her. Chuck Bass doesn't apologise especially not for going after what he wants.
"Thank you. But you don't need to apologise to me. You did all the same things I would have done if I was in your position, I may have overreacted. So, I'm sorry, too, I actually probably should have apologised sooner, I'm not proud of how I treated you last year."
He looked back up at her unable to mask the surprise from his features, never once did he think Blair Waldorf would be apologising to him, she never had a reason to. While she had hurt him last year, he could hardly blame her for not wanting to be with him. It amazed him how much things had changed since then. Here she was willingly dancing with him without him having to scheme against any of her preferred suitors. Indeed, things were different now, better, but also scarier. He decided that if she could apologise to him, he could afford to open up a bit to her.
"At cotilion I was so desperate to dance with you, to be your date." He said earnestly, "I never would have predicted after how that night ended, that we'd be here." He smiled then, a genuine one, a smile that even she had only seen a handful of times and if her heart was fluttering before it was racing now.
"I wouldn't have guessed it either but I'm glad it worked out this way, all I wanted today was to be your date. And if this is as close as we can get to that for now it's still more than I could have hoped after—"
"I'm sorry." He cut her off knowing she was referring to their last conversation in her bedroom where he had allowed his fears to deny them both what they wanted.
"Don't be, I get it, we're not ready, it's fine we should have plenty of time to work things out."
"I hope so." He responded and then they fell into a quiet both trying to make the most of the time they had now. Another song concluded before either spoke again "You know I was originally planning to set you up with Willy Morton."
"What? Seriously?!" She didn't bother to hide her surprise, Willy Morton was nothing like the boy Chuck set her up with and certainly nothing like Chuck himself he was more like Nate.
"Yeah" he chuckled lightly at her reaction before explaining, "He's basically Nate, I thought that would have secured me the win. I thought that a guy like him was everything you wanted in a date."
She didn't really know how to respond to that, going off cotilion last year anyone could easily reach that conclusion but her perspective and interests had drastically changed since then, she decided before she would determine how to respond to his notions she needed to know how he went from setting her up with an Archibald clone to one of himself, "Ok, then how'd you wind up with beta-Bass?"
"It was actually Nate's advice he thinks he no longer holds your affections, so I thought maybe it was worth risking my limo to see if he could be right."
"You thought, after your father's wedding, after we were planning to spend the summer together, after I interfered with your Brooklyn crush and after I all but told you those three words that I still wanted Nate more than you?" She questioned, truly shocked even though they hadn't said the words yet, she assumed Chuck knew how she felt about him and how much she wanted him.
He looked slightly embarrassed as he admitted "To be fair you haven't had the opportunity to reunite with Nate since your last break up and you've chosen him over me before."
She thought about that for a moment and while ordinarily she might have been offended by the implication she knew this stemmed from his insecurities. Even though he hid it behind considerable arrogance Chuck had many insecurities, perhaps even more than herself. She knew the extent of his insecurities were likely the fault of his callous father, just like many of her insecurities stem from her icy mother, though like her ex-boyfriend and his affections for her best friend increased her insecurities she knew her and her affections for his best friend had the same effect on him. They really were the same in a lot of ways, perhaps why they were able to connect with each other more deeply than with anybody else. Though where Nate constantly attempted to spare her feelings she never bothered to do that for Chuck in fact, on several occasions, she went out of her way to maximise his hurt. She felt an overwhelming guilt, while Chuck wasn't perfect he didn't deserve that and if the roles were reversed and he treated her as she did him she knew she would have struggled immensely.
She determined she needed to say more to refute his insecurities. "I suppose I can understand how you reached that conclusion, but to clarify I don't want Nate or anyone like Nate, and I am not interested in some discount Chuck Bass either." She confessed looking meaningfully at him and was rewarded with his smile. If he was going to keep smiling at her like that, she was going to need some beta blockers.
"Last year I would have killed for you to feel this way. This is everything I wanted, for you to want me too. Realistically, that should be enough and nothing else should matter." He finished looking meaningfully at her allowing all the adoration he felt towards her to be reflected in his gaze.
"What are you saying, Chuck?" She silently prayed she wasn't getting her hopes up, because it sounded like he was about to give her everything she wanted.
"I don't want to let stupid fears control me and if you're still interested, I want to be with you because I–"
"Chuck! we need to talk to you." Suddenly, there was Serena with her mother and Humphrey trailing behind interrupting what she was pretty sure was going to be the best moment of her life, somebody better have died.
"Oh Charles there's been an accident, your father is–"
Oh No.
A/N: Somehow, I started rewatching Gossip Girl 2 weeks ago and I felt more inclined than ever to write some missing scenes and to share them even though I don't know if many other people are still thinking about Gossip Girl or Chuck and Blair, but if anyone else is I hope you can enjoy this little one-shot.
Btw I was referencing a deleted scene from the episode where Chuck told Nate he planned to set Blair up with Willy Morton because he was like Nate. Then Nate explained that Blair was no longer interested in him and Chuck should set her up with someone like himself. I kind of butchered the scene but that was the gist of it and I've accepted it as cannon and it makes sense to me that Chuck would still be insecure about Nate after everything that happened in season 1.
