Jamie woke to a throbbing pain in his head. Opening his eyes, he tried to get his bearings. Looking around, he found there was stuff everywhere and it smelled damp. There were stairs in the corner.
"We're in a basement."
The throbbing pain in his head was suddenly forgotten when his mind went into overdrive. His eyes scanned the large and crowded room. He found Eddie a few feet away from him on an old wrought iron bed. Her head was lying against a clean pillow and the mattress had clean sheets on them. She was covered in clean blankets. There was light in the room, and it was surprisingly bright. His eyes found that she had an iv in her left hand and he followed it up to an iv pole connected to a rolling stand. Taking note that the bag was just simple Saline, he saw her begin to stir.
"Mmm."
Running a hand through her hair, Jamie tried to reassure her.
"Hey. There you are. Just take it easy. How do you feel?"
Eddie looked around her and saw that at the end of the bed there was an armful of towels as well as other medical supplies. This made her uneasy. Jamie taking notice, continued to reassure her.
"Don't worry. I won't let you have him in this basement. I'll get you out."
Jamie stood on his feet as soon as he heard locks on the door at the top of the stairs unlock. The man in the navy-blue suit descended the stairs and gave a toothy grin to Eddie. Jamie put his left arm out towards Eddie to try and block her from said man in the navy-blue suit.
"Don't worry Benjamin. I didn't hurt a hair on you're wife's head. There will be a doctor coming down in a few minutes. They'll be delivering your precious little boy."
Jamie shook his head.
"That's not a good idea. It's too soon. Look, I can get you the money. I can wire transfer the 18.5 million to whatever bank account you've got."
The man in the navy-suit sneered at Jamie.
"Wire transfer my money? No. I want it in three black duffel bags. Non-sequential bills only. If I find that you've found a way to get me money that the bank has put ink in, and the cops know about it, I'll take that baby out myself and kill you."
Jamie stayed where he was at and kept his arm out.
"I don't advise inducing labor at this point. The baby's lungs haven't fully matured yet. Whether by scheduled C-section or a natural birth, he'd be very weak. Not to mention the strain on my wife. The stress of labor at this point would put her in danger."
Navy-blue suit man brushed Jamie off.
"She's delivering that baby today. I'm sending the doctor in now."
With that, navy-blue suit man stomped up the stairs and held the door open for a man at the top of the stairs. Jamie planted his body in front of Eddie on the bed.
"Listen to me. I won't let him touch you. He's going to want to check. Try and relax. Just go with it. I've got a plan."
Before Eddie could ask what his plan was, Jamie moved the blanket a little for show and gave her a nod. Then he squeezed her hand and lowered his voice.
"Relax Eddie."
Jamie had placed his hand on the mattress just under the blanket. He raised his voice slightly so that the doctor coming down the stairs could hear.
"Well babe, looks like your ok. Baby's doing great. Any more contractions?"
Eddie tried not to give Jamie a confused look but she shook her head.
"No babe. I'm ok. Thanks."
The doctor was now at the bottom of the stairs.
"Well, let's see what we have here."
Eddie did her best to scoot away from the doctor and Jamie held his left hand up.
"Hold up doctor… I didn't catch your name?"
The doctor was a little younger than Jamie. He had glasses and dark brown hair. Eddie and Jamie could see he had kind eyes. But they still didn't trust.
"I'm Doctor Swanson Jessica. How are you feeling"?
Eddie shifted uncomfortably in the bed and stayed where she was at.
"Very uncomfortable."
Jamie cut in and still held his hand up.
"Doctor Swanson, I appreciate you trying to help my wife, but from a medical perspective, you know it's too soon for her to go into labor. The baby's lungs haven't fully matured yet. Besides, she's barely one centimeter dilated. Let her rest."
Doctor Swanson looked Jamie in the eye.
"Doctor Stevenson, I don't think you know how long you've been down here. You're wife Jessica is 38 weeks."
Jamie almost gaped at Doctor Swanson, but kept a straight face.
"At least let me deliver my son."
Doctor Swanson sighed and nodded.
"At least let me check the position of the baby. Externally. I promise Jessica. This won't hurt one bit. Might be a little uncomfortable."
As Doctor Swanson said this, Jamie threw a right hook and knocked him out cold. Carefully taking the iv out of Eddie's hand, he found gauze and a piece of tape to put over it. Pushing the blankets back, he helped her sit up. Once he was sure she had her bearings, he helped her up the stairs. Testing the door, he found that it was open. Quietly opening it, the pair tiptoed out of the basement. Jamie quickly looked and scanned the upstairs. They had to be careful. They heard noise coming from a tv on the second floor. Then loud shouts and hollers at it. The pair nodded at each other and headed towards the front door. He was careful in turning the handle. Slipping outside, he and Eddie found themselves surprisingly near his apartment. Picking up the pace, the pair headed down the street. He made sure they were far enough away from the residence they'd been held captive in to push on a remote that had been sewn into his vest. Within minutes, the two were whisked back to the undercover apartment building. Now they were sitting in chairs in the command center at the end of the hallway on their floor. Chief Williams sat at the head of the table listening to Jamie recount what he remembered.
"There was a Doctor Swanson. He looked like he was being coerced into doing Rolanil's bidding. Can you pull up his information and see if he has any kind of record? Then there is the man in the navy-blue suit. He's the one I'm sure you all know by now held a knife to Eddie's stomach. He's 6 foot 2 has a hook shaped scar on his right cheek, dark hair and hazel eyes. Oh and he has a lazy left eye."
Chief William's nodded.
"Thank you officers. We've got two more weeks of this undercover. Thanks to you, we can now locate Rolanil's associates. The residence you were being held in, do you remember what it looks like?"
Jamie nodded.
"It's actually a residence in Brooklyn heights. I memorized the address. 74-90 East 65th Street. Rolanil wasn't in the house. My partner and I think there were between 8 and 10 of his associates in that residence."
The other TARU officers had now left the room and It was just Jamie, Eddie and Officer Lancaster. She scooted her chair closer to Eddie and gave her a sympathetic smile.
"You've been through a lot in the last month. Let's go back to your apartment and get you checked out."
Eddie nodded and found that she could no longer get to her feet without the help of two people. Shaking her head she made a mental note. Her legs and her feet hurt as she was getting settled onto the couch once they got back to their apartment. Officer Lancaster changed gears and sighed.
"Eddie, this is important, I realize you might not remember everything that happened to you in that basement, but, did you feel anything shift?"
Eddie became confused and shook her head.
"No. At least I don't think so. What's wrong?"
Doctor Lancaster gave Eddie a sympathetic look and continued to look her over. When she was done, she patted Eddie's foot.
"Now onto a more serious question, did they hurt you?"
Eddie shook her head.
"I don't think so."
Jamie got a pit in his stomach. He'd been worried about the exact same thing. Doctor Lancaster sighed and nodded.
"Ok. One other thing, if you haven't started to feel them already, the suit is going to start sending signals like are about to go into labor. In the real world, you'd be having Braxton-Hicks contractions. It would be the body's way of practicing before the real thing actually happens."
Eddie chewed on this piece of information for a minute and Jamie squeezed her hand to reassure her.
"You've handled this whole operation even with all the hiccups along the way with grace. I am right here partner. I'm not going anywhere."
It wasn't until later that night that Eddie felt the first one. She had just grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator when 3 of the 6 sensors on her abdomen went off. She felt a pair of soft hands. One had blindly grabbed for her right one, while the left was on her upper back, rubbing it in large broad strokes.
"Easy Eddie. Easy. Breathe."
For the first time since she'd taken this assignment with Jamie, Eddie actually felt somewhat afraid. With everything that happened in the basement of that house, she was certain now that fear was starting to show itself. She'd just been good at hiding it. Jamie could see it in her eyes.
"It's ok Eddie. I'm right here. Partners stick together. Remember?"
Eddie nodded but wasn't sure she'd heard him correctly.
