Chapter 7: Unforeseen surprise

"Eddie look at me. Maybe you should lie down."

Eddie shook her head no.

"No. Doctor Lancaster said to keep walking around. In reality this would help progress labor. I just want to get this show on the road. You've got everything you need?"

Jamie nodded and his eyes wandered towards the bedroom. He pushed a piece of hair out of her face, lightly placing a hand on the back of her neck.

"Yes. I'm with you every step of the way Eddie. This is us playing a role here. Nothing more."

Eddie blew out a breath.

"I understand that Reagan. But I really need to use the bathroom."

Nodding, Jamie led her over to the bathroom and closed the door. Concern crossed his face as he looked at his watch. It'd been almost 20 minutes. Knocking on the door he listened. Then he spoke.

"Hey are you ok in there Eddie?"

The door slowly swung open revealing the very pale face of Eddie who was looking down at her feet and moved them slightly. Jamie followed her gaze to the floor where there was a large puddle.

"Take it easy Eddie. Looks like your water broke. Lets get you into bed. Watch your step. I'll get this cleaned up."

Everything was such a whirlwind after that. Eddie was trying to wrap her head around what she was feeling. She'd never felt anything like this in her entire life. She let out a groan and then locked eyes with Jamie.

"One more push Eddie and I'll have him. I promise. I know your tired and in pain. Just one more for me. There you go."

Jamie could see the baby slip out of the suit in into his outstretched arms.The two officers eyes widened as a wail began to fill the room. Eddie got a look at the baby as Jamie held him over the sheet.

"Jamie he looks just like…"

Jamie swallowed and cut the fake umbilical cord, then wrapped him up in a blanket. It took him a minute after he'd placed Patrick into Eddie's arms to form a response.

"I know. I don't understand…"

Officer Lancaster/Doctor Lancaster had been waiting in the living room on standby just in case Jamie needed her. Jamie walked to the door way and motioned for her to come inside. Once she was inside the bedroom, she looked Jamie in the eye.

"Look, there's a reason why my team made Patrick look like the two of you. It was to make it more believable. A fake rubber baby wasn't going to cut it. Rolanil would've never bought it if we hadn't."

Jamie and Eddie were now torn by what had just been revealed to them. It lead to more questions though. Eddie voiced her thoughts.

"What's going to happen to him?"

Doctor Lancaster changed gears and was back to being just Officer Lancaster.

"Reprogrammable AI technology. I've got three more suits like this. This first one was my prototype. You should rest Eddie. I'll take him. We found all six of those missing women. They were being held behind a fake panel in the wall in the basement the two of you were also being held."

Jamie spoke up.

"Where was the panel?"

Officer Lancaster frowned and explained.

"Behind the bed Eddie was lying in."

Now it was Jamie's turn to frown.

"I should've found it."

Officer Lancaster nodded and gave him a sympathetic squeeze of his shoulder.

"Don't beat yourself up Reagan. You were so focused on getting Janko out and that was important at the moment. We didn't know until just a couple of days ago. I've got to take him now. Would you like to say goodbye?"

Jamie and Eddie shook their heads. Eddie was freaked out just looking at him. He breathed and cried just like a real baby. Jamie hesitated for a moment and ran a hand over the tiny baby's patch of blond hair.
"I'd be more attached if he were my real son."

Eddie looked away and inwardly shuddered. She was just happy all this was done now.

One week later…

"Hey Janko, how does it feel to be yourself again?"

Eddie turned to her former partner.

"To be honest Jamie, my back is still trying to adjust to the minus 40 pounds suit I don't have on anymore."

Jamie gave a smirk and smiled.

"Well be safe out there today. See you later?"

Eddie smiled at Jamie, they were going out for drinks. They had finally decided to give a romantic relationship a shot now that they weren't partners any longer.

"Sure. Drinks after tour? At Antons?"

Nodding, Jamie watched as Eddie turned to walk away. Even though she didn't have that 40 pound fake baby belly strapped to her anymore, she still waddled slightly. He smiled. He would bring that up later after a few drinks, just to get a reaction out of her.
