"Where's Mick?" Are the first words that come out of his mouth. It's a reflex and he immediately almost cringes at how desperate he sounds.

But if Ben notices it, he doesn't say anything and instead checks up on Cal. "She's getting Lawrence with Vance and some of his guys."

Jared nods, "Get Cal home, I'm gonna go check." He gets out of the car while Ben fastens Cal's seatbelt and gets out his walkie ready to call Michaela.

But that's when the ground shakes and the sound of an explosion thunders in the tunnels beneath them.

"Mick!" Jared and Ben yell in unison.

Jared runs towards the entrance as fast as he can, but a ball of flames and heat emerge from the small entryway. It launches him back a couple feet and he hits the ground hard, leaving his ears ringing and head spinning.

There's the sound of glass shattering and bricks crumbling as unconscious takes him over.

"Jared."

"Jared."

"Jared!"

His eyes snap open as someone rocks his shoulder. Ben is standing over him as he's brought back to reality. The blonde haired man helps Jared up and helps stabilize him as his legs threaten to give out.

But the moment of weakness is quickly over as Jared realizes that Mick's still in the fiery hellscape of the tunnel.

He runs over to the entrance with Ben hot on tail but the police officer turns to him and shakes his head, "you need to take Cal and go home."

"What?!" Ben exclaims, "I can't. She's my sister!"

"I can't let you in there. It's not safe," Jared insists, "Just go." He turns to go into the tunnels but Ben grabs his shoulder and turns the officer back to face him.

"No! I'm not leaving until I know she's safe!" Ben insists, a fire burning in his eyes that Jared is used to seeing in Michaela's and he knows he can't do anything to douse the flames.

So he sighs, "Fine. Go stay with Calvin, I'll be out in a minute."

Ben nods but before he lets go of Jared's shoulder he stares the cop down, "Just find her." His voice wavers slightly and his eyes soften.

Jared nods - his face determined, "I will." And then he's off.

The tunnels reek of smoke and blood and Jared uses every inch of strength he has not to vomit out his lunch. Small fires are scattered throughout the tunnels and wood crumbles as the flames eat away at them.

And what's worse are the bodies.

He sees Lawrence - dead. His eyes open and his expensive suit slightly singed, blood dripping out of the side of his mouth.

Next is Vance. The entire left side of his face is burned off and a large piece of rebar is lodged in his back. Jared feels bad for all the times he doubted the man's allegiance.

He passes more and more bodies, some still breathing - who he calls backup for - and others not so lucky.

But as the smoke continues to clog up his nostrils and lungs he becomes more and more worried about how he'll find Michaela. But he clings a shred of hope that she'll be fine.

"Vasquez the tunnels are unstable, you need to get out of there," a voice says as his walkie crackles to life.

"I'm sorry but I can't," Jared responds, "Mick's still down here."

There's a beat of silence then…

"You know we can't save everyone."

"Well I sure as hell am gonna try," Jared answers, his voice hardened with determination. He wasn't about to leave her - wasn't about to lose her.

Not again.

"Mick!" Jared calls out. Dust and rubble falls as he continues down the tunnel. He passes the head scientist's body and one of Vance's guys near him both being consumed by the flames.

"Mick!" He calls again. No answer. "Please be ok," he mutters, praying to whatever powers that brought flight 828 back, to leave Mick unharmed.

But his prayers are in vain.

He finds her half buried by rubble and wood. The wall have seemingly collapsed on her. Her eyes are closed and blood is leaking from a wound on her head that looks pretty bad.

Jared drags her out from under the debris and immediately checks for a pulse. Which he thankfully finds. It was slow and a bit erratic, but there. He doesn't have time to relish in the moment though, he has more pressing matters to deal with. The tunnels are decaying by the second and he needs to get Mick and himself out of there.

"Michaela," he says, gently rocking her shoulder, "Mick, can you hear me?" She doesn't respond, doesn't move and Jared finds himself going back to check her pulse - is thankfully still there.

After a couple painstaking seconds she started to stir. Jared went dizzy with relief - she's ok. And after a couple of seconds of coaxing Jared is blessed with her beautiful blue eyes slowly opening.

"Jared?" She coughs as smoke from the growing fires infiltrates her lungs

"Yeah it's me," Jared says, as he helps her up.

"Wha arrr you doing herree," Michaela asks, her voice slurring as she tries and fails to get up. Her eyes start to close again and Jared rocks her shoulder again to make sure that she doesn't fall unconscious again.

"Nope. You don't get to quit on me that easy Stone," He puts his arm under Michaela's and allows hers to wrap around his shoulder. Then carefully helps her up to her feet.

Debris and ash fall all around them and Jared hears wood, brick and dirt collapsing behind them. They needed to move - fast.

"Cmon Mick, we've gotta get out of here," Jared says.

Mick stumbles and staggers as she and Jared make their way through the tunnel. She felt tired, dizzy, and had a pounding headache. "Wha abou Vance an-"

"They're dead," Jared responds, short and straight to the point. "The ones that are alive are already being seen by EMT's. You're the last one that needs to be seen."

Michaela lets out a short laugh, "Cmon. I'm fine." She's still slurring her words.

Jared raises a skeptical eyebrow, "Yeah right, I know a concussion when I see one."

He doesn't get a response from the injured cop and he turns to see her just staring at the ground in front of her. Eyes lost and glazed over - like she wasn't in her own body.

"Mick?"

And suddenly it's like a light switch is turned on and she's snapped back to reality. "Huh? Did you sayyy sometin?"

Jared sighs then responds, "No. Let's just get you out of here."

Maybe that concussion is more severe than I thought.

They really needed to get out of there. Jared could see the light of the outside and he sighs in relief. Michaela is becoming more and more dead weight by the second and he knows that she'll collapse soon.

"We're almost there," he says, nudging the injured cop a bit, "Just hang on."

Michaela mumbles something incoherent and her eyes slowly start to close. Jared's basically running at this point and dragging the half conscious Mick with him.

They're almost there.

"Almost home free, just stay awake for me!" He yells.

But it's no use.

Because she falls. Her legs give out from under her and she would have collapsed to the ground had not Jared been there. They're just a couple feet away from the outside world. And then he sees

"Ben!"

The blonde haired man's head snaps towards where Jared's voice comes from. He leaves his place - leaning against the damaged car - and runs towards the entryway to the tunnels.

"Jared!" He says once he's there, "Did you find her?"

"Yeah, but she's unconscious and has a bad head wound," Jared calls back. "She needs immediate medical attention."

Ben nods and runs off to alert the medical workers. Meanwhile, after a couple of seconds, Jared manages to get himself and Michaela out of the tunnels. Responders rush to them and carry Mick away to the ambulance.

Panic and fear is riddled all over Ben's face as he watches his sister get carried away. He runs his hands nervously through his hair as he looks towards the car and the ambulance. Jared senses the man's internal dilemma - his allegiance to his son or to his sister.

"I'll stay with Mick, you take Cal home," the police officer says. It doesn't seem to be like Ben hears him, still muttering to himself and looking back and forth between the ambulance and automobile. So Jared grabs the man by the shoulders, "Ben! Take Cal home. Mick will be ok."

Ben finally understands, "Ok. I'll drop him off, then get to hospital as fast as I can." He rushes off to the car, then speeds away at a dangerous speed and Jared shakes his head because that madkan might get someone killed driving like that.

But he doesn't have time to worry about Ben, he has to focus on the other Stone sibling. He hopes in the ambulance the Michaela's in as it leaves the Red Hook factory and heads to the hospital.

"What's the damage?" Jared asks one of the medical workers, a slightly aged woman with wrinkles that crease her skin.

She sighs then pulls out a clipboard, "She has a very severe concussion and head wound. Along with several broken ribs and some lung damage."

"Will she be ok?"

The doctor is silent for a minute before deeply sighing and pinching the bridge of her nose, "I don't know. It's a miracle she's even alive right now. That explosion should have killed her."

The words hit him like a truck, "What?" Michaela could have died?

The doctor nods, then checks Mick's vitals before heading to another part of the truck. Leaving Jared there alone to contemplate what the hell just happened. He puts his head in his hands and runs them through his hair.

It was supposed to be him. Mick had volunteered to watch Calvin but Jared had told her he would watch the kid. God he wishes he hadn't, that he just let her stay in the car. Where she could be safe.

Jared looks over at Mick. Unconscious, hooked up to an IV and a bandage on her head. She looks so fragile, which makes Jared chuckle because of how ironic it sounds - Michaela Stone is anything but fragile.

But his brief amusement is cut short by the reality of how dire Mick's situation is. He takes her hand in his own, "I'm so sorry Mick. It should've been me, not you."

They make it to the hospital and the medics hurry the stretcher inside and Jared can only watch.

"I'm so sorry."
