It was now time for the final round. The competitors were the woman who uses Cut Magic and the man who uses Space Magic. The woman's name is Ellie Sabbeth while the man is Matt Gregor.
Everyone is anticipating their battle, even the ones who lost. They want to know who will have the honor of challenging a Wizard Saint. Of course, the betting became very intense and Ben joined it.
The match started at 1pm after they held the 3rd place match in the morning. The one who came in 3rd place was the woman who used Plant Magic. She overwhelmed her opponent who used Light Magic.
Now, the battle between Matt the Space Mage and Ellie the Cut Mage commenced. The beginning is quite intense but not so much after that. It's because Ellie sent a barrage of attacks at Matt but nothing hit him.
Every attack that Ellie sends just passed through Matt's body as if he was just an illusion. Most people don't understand what happened but Ben did. Matt distorted the space around his body to make Ellie's attacks pass through him.
To put it simply, Matt's body is in a different space from Ellie's attack. He isolated himself in a different space. It's like he's there but also not there at the same time.
Ellie tried to use some spells and other methods but nothing worked. Then after a few minutes, Matt suddenly made a move after remaining silent for a brief period. He teleported right behind Ellie and threw a punch.
Matt's punch was coated in Space Magic which gave it a bluish-black color. He threw a punch immediately after teleporting so it's really fast. Normal mages will be hit cleanly but surprisingly Ellie barely managed to block it after applying Cut Magic on her back.
She was flung far across the arena but her magic defense had reduced a lot of Matt's attack power, reducing the damage she took. Before she can even stand up, Matt launched another attack. He wasn't flustered after having his attack blocked.
Well, this is the final round so he knew his opponent was formidable. Also, he had shown his attack many times in this tournament. So he had anticipated that his opponent could block or evade it.
But his 2nd spell was an attack he hadn't used before in this tournament. Instead of teleporting himself, he teleported Ellie high into the air. But it's not too high because Ben's enchanted barrier blocked his space manipulation.
He wanted to simply throw his opponent out of the stadium and win that way. But Ben's barrier blocked his Space Magic so he can only manipulate the space inside it. It's not a problem for this tournament but it would be a problem if he won and challenged Ben.
From the barrier alone, Matt knew Ben had some understanding of Space Magic. That means Ben might be able to counter his Space Magic spells. So Matt is thinking of not challenging Ben if he won the tournament.
However, the match hadn't ended and he hasn't won. Surprisingly, Ellie was able to handle the fall from a 50 m height. 50 m is the height of Ben's barrier which is quite high.
She used her Cut Magic's recoil to slow her fall which impressed everyone there. They were further impressed when she immediately attacked Matt after she landed. Her surprise attack also surprisingly worked and cut Matt's right arm.
Matt hadn't set up his space distortion spell for protection and barely avoided Ellie's attack. Now everyone knew that Matt was weak to surprise attacks. But they also knew it would be difficult to surprise Matt after this because he will be a lot more cautious.
Matt took his cut arm and put it back in place before reconnecting it again. Ellie's Cut Magic doesn't cut like how a sword normally cut things. It separates objects and they'll reconnect again if they are placed back in their spot correctly.
That's why there was no blood after Matt's arm was cut, just like when Gildarts' Crush Magic broke people's bodies apart. Well, it can be said that Crush and Cut Magic came from the same source so they were similar in concept.
But it seems Ellie's mastery of her magic is lower than Gildarts. Ben was sure Gildarts could break Matt's Space Magic and defeat Matt. It won't be easy though if Ben calculated Gildarts' strength when they sparred before the S-Class exam and Matt's current strength.
Currently, in the match, Matt had a higher chance of winning than Ellie. Most people start to bet on Matt because Ellie had been overwhelmed since the beginning. She had just landed an attack but Matt landed a lot of attacks on her.
The match was now in Matt's favor and Ellie was started to feel cornered. She kept trying to find a way to pass Matt's space distortion spell but nothing worked. Long range and short range attacks fail to hit Matt's body.
But Matt found himself unable to defeat Ellie. She is a better fighter than Matt with better battle skills and senses. Every time Matt attacked, she would always respond by blocking or evading even his surprise attacks.
This development gave Matt a bad feeling. It told him that he needed to defeat Ellie as soon as possible. He didn't know why he felt that way but he knew he needed to listen to that feeling. A high-ranked mage's feelings can't be ignored that easily.
Time passed and Matt still couldn't defeat Ellie. He also understood the bad feeling he had before. Ellie is improving at an incredible rate in this battle.
She even started to break his Space Magic spells like Space Blade and Space Bullets using her magic. Matt needed to defeat her soon before she successfully cut through his Space Distortion spell.
But he failed to do that because Ellie was now used to his attack patterns. He tried to use spells that he hadn't shown anyone yet but Ellie predicted that too. She is very smart and had predicted what Matt will try to do if his attacks failed.
Matt is regretting not going all out from the beginning. If he took Ellie more seriously from the start, he would've won. Well, it's only wishful thinking because even Ben never thought that he would win even if he went all out from the start.
"See? I told you Ellie would win." Ben said while smirking at Jura.
"Yeah, you really have good eyes. Even I started to think she would win after she gained the upper hand." Jura admitted.
Ben smirked.
"Well, most people think the same thing as you. Maybe almost everyone here thought the same thing. However, if you watch this tournament very seriously, you would find out that Ellie has gone all out since the beginning." He said.
"She wasn't this strong a few days ago but she kept growing to this point by fighting strong opponents. Someone who can grow in a battle like her is the most dangerous. If I had to guess, she must've met a wall that she can't surpass so she tried competing in this tournament. Her goal is to fight strong people that might help her break that well."
"Whoa, you can understand that by just watching her performance?" Lyon asked, impressed.
"Well, it's just a wild guess, but this is a common problem even among high-ranking mages. Everyone will always feel that they've found their limit one day. They will try to overcome that limit but only a few will succeed. Some give up without trying to overcome it at all. Though if they succeed, they'll reach a height that was unimaginable to them and defeat opponents they were never dreaming to defeat." Ben explained.
Sure enough, Ellie defeated Matt after her Cut Magic managed to cut the space that Matt manipulated.
