Chapter 14

Remy's POV

Criminy, it's hot in Trenton in July! I no longer wear my Rangeman vest. My buddy Lester took me into the fenced Rangeman yard and set up a sprinkler for me to run through. Oh, frabjous joy! He took off my collar and tags so they didn't get wet - not to worry, I have a microchip embedded in me. Hector uses the hand scanner on me so we know it's where it's supposed to be.

Anyway, I got really wet and nipped at a lot of water. Lester told me that I smelled like a wet dog - well, duh. He told me to shake myself before we went back into the building. I lifted one ear and tilted my head at him like I didn't understand. When the two of us got into the elevator, I shook myself all over him. Hehehe.

Yeah, I ride the elevator - the stairs scare me. We've had one fire drill since I came here. You can't use the elevator during a fire drill so my friend Cal carried me down the stairs. I am too big for my Mom to carry me down five flights of stairs, plus she has to get Rex in his traveling carrier and my turtle Freddy in a mesh bag if we need to leave the building.

My friend Hector also made me a cool tag to wear on my collar. It opens and closes the elevator doors, but only on fifth and first floor plus the back door, so I can let myself into the fenced yard if everyone is too busy to take me for a potty break. When I open those doors it shows up on monitors as a pawprint so the guys know it's me. Yo! When Mom's Man looks at me I can tell that he's thinking that I will let other critters into the building with me if I'm left unsupervised. Hmmm - who wouldn't want a baby squirrel, opossum or raccoon - so cute! And I'm sure that Tank wouldn't notice one more cat. You know what Ernest Hemingway said - "One cat just leads to another"!

My first 4th of July! I didn't get to go to the classic car show bc the pavement is too hot for my foot pads but there was a big picnic today in the yard at Rangeman. My cousins Angie and Mary Alice were there along with Mary Lou's boys. I found out I got another mad skill - balloon volleyball! I can jump really high and boop, boop, boop the balloon. And the food was great - I had a grilled hot dog - nummy. The kids got to use sparklers under adult supervision. Some of the Rangeguys are bothered by fireworks so there won't be any of those tonight but we can watch the big display at the park from inside the Rangeman building - it's pretty soundproof.

I am still learning stuff. Mom and Binkie took me to the park. I love playing Frisbee! I made a great leaping catch. If I do say so myself, I got game. But I learned that there's a game called Frisbee golf and maybe I shouldn't have grabbed the Frisbee out of the air after the kid threw it. My bad. He was cool with it, though. I let him pet me.

Oh yeah, Wednesday night was Karaoke Night at Pino's. Mom and Ramon won first place and $100 when they sang "Endless Love". They are sooooo good. They decided to give the prize money to my Grandpa Frank Plum to use for the renovations they are doing to the VFW Lodge. My Rangeguys donated even more money to the winnings. Some of the Rangemen help out there - they made a nice patio with landscaping and helped lay new flooring. They will put on a new roof this fall. Cool!

Got to run now - my Mom just opened the door to a small conference room so me and my homeboy Freddy can chase each other. Turtles can move really fast when they want to! And, according to Mom, we are "entirely too rambunctious" to be running through fifth floor when people are trying to work! Pffft. Oh boy, here comes Rex in his exercise ball. And we're off - cue the Chariots of Fire theme!
