A/N Hey everybody. Who's ready for Night 4? It's been a while coming, but we're going to have some fun with this. I will say, though, that I had tossed around a lot of ideas for this chapter, but I do believe I have a way to sort them out in a good understandable way. I really hope you all enjoy, because I've got laughs, scares, and action lined up for this night. Alright, that's enough for now. Let's roll!
The rest of the day went by fairly quickly. Everyone had gotten rested up, and all preparations were made. They just needed to head over there, which they did rather early. For most of them, the initial pressure of heading to the diner had been alleviated as time went on. They had plans for what needed to happen, but were also ready for anything to go wrong. At this point, really, they were expecting something to go wrong, so they made sure they were ready to handle anything.
Roxy, on the other hand, felt as if she had a ton of bricks on her shoulders. She was still wondering if she would really be able to help them. They had only just offered her that responsibility, and she did agree to it. But now that she had, she knew failure was not an option. She had to recognize what they were looking for quickly. She had to make sure she kept everyone safe. And most importantly, she had to make sure she didn't fall into another trap where she could lose control of herself. She thought about all of these things, and the nerves were starting to build up.
They finally pulled up to the diner around 11:35 PM, and when they did, Roxy stared out the window at the sign for a moment, almost dreading what could happen once she stepped in there.
"Roxy!" said Vanessa sharply.
The wolf came out of her trance with a start. "Huh?"
"Are you awake back there?" the blonde snarked.
"Uh, yeah, y-yeah, sorry."
Roxy fumbled around with the handle a moment before finally opening the door. Gregory and Fifi followed as she stepped onto the pavement, and they could see her hand shaking slightly as she looked at the building again.
"Feeling a bit more nervous now that you're back here?" asked Gregory.
"No…maybe…I don't know," the wolf stuttered.
The orphan grabbed her hand again. "It's okay, really. I totally understand. I'd probably feel the same way if we were back at the Pizzaplex. But you've got us here with you now, so don't worry."
She sighed. "I know you're right, but…it's hard to process this."
He chuckled slightly. "I don't think it'll be so bad once you get in there…Maybe we can get Foxy to give you a pep-talk once we get in there. That oughta help."
Roxy's eyes widened. "Wait! Foxy's actually in there? Like, the original Foxy?"
"Yeah," said Fifi. "He's been helping us this whole time. Didn't you hear us talking with him last night?"
The wolf shook her head. "I didn't know what was going on last night. I—Oh man."
It was clear now that her nerves were getting worse. Now she had to face the character she was made to replace? Lovely.
Vanessa, who was unlocking the door, laughed a little bit when she saw her reaction. "What's the matter?" she said. "Don't want to talk to the 'stupid pirate character'?"
Roxy looked at her incredulously. "Heeeey!" she whined.
"I'm kidding," the blonde retorted. "You have got absolutely nothing to worry about with him. In fact, from what he told me, I think he's excited to see you."
Roxy was slightly taken aback by this, but soon gave a small smile.
"Okay, that makes me feel a bit better, actually," she said.
"That's what we're here for," said Gregory cheekily.
Vanessa finally opened the door and the group stepped in behind her, Freddy taking up the rear.
"I should also mention that there are other older model animatronics assisting him," the bear said. "You may wish to speak to them as well."
"Sure, shouldn't be a problem," said Roxy…but then she yelped when the map bot appeared in front of her.
"Hi, please take this map," it droned.
"Oh yes…he's here too," Freddy continued, embarrassed.
"Great," Roxy said through clenched teeth.
After they got the map bot to leave her alone, everyone went down to the stairwell where Foxy was waiting. He was leaned up against the door, and when he saw Roxy among the group, he gave a smirk. He walked up to her first thing.
"Hafta say, you clean up pretty good there, lassie," he commented. "'Course, getting dolled up to go down here may not be the best thing."
She sighed. "Well, it's too late to worry about that now. I'm already here."
The pirate gave a hearty laugh. "That you are. I weren't sure if you would come back, if I'm bein' honest. Seemed like you went through the gutter last I saw ya."
"Yeah, well…I wasn't sure about it either, but…after what I heard earlier, I can't just do nothing. I don't want anyone else to get hurt, so…I have to face this."
Foxy's grin grew wider. "Now that's what I was hopin' to hear. When I heard a different character was replacing me at the Pizzaplex, I was more worried for you than me. I'm old, and I've seen it all, but I wondered if you'd be able to handle not just the kiddies but all the things this company has done. But seein' you here tonight, after everything I'm sure you been through…I ain't got nothing to worry about."
Roxy's eyes widened. Did she just receive a blessing from the one she basically put in here? She thought for sure he would be sour about that, but there wasn't a tone of insincerity in his voice. And judging by the other's impressed looks, this was clearly something none of them had expected. For some reason, after that, she was feeling more confident than ever.
"I…Th-Thanks," she stuttered.
"Don't mention it," the pirate responded. "That's more than most folks get from me, I know. If you need to talk of your feelings, though, talk to the rest of these scallywags. I ain't good at that stuff."
She crossed her arms and gave a little scowl, but Vanessa put an arm around her.
"We've got your back," the blonde said. "You know that."
The wolf slowly nodded, "Yeah."
After they were let in at 12, the group walked around the areas that had opened up after Roxy's chase with Gregory last night. Surprisingly, the only opposition they were facing so far was exponentially more S.T.A.F.F. bots, which were all easily dispatched. They went into almost every room they came across searching, but still to no avail. After a couple hours of searching they'd found themselves in another large office space full of computers, but there was still no luck in turning most of them on. And the ones that would turn on had nothing.
"I'm getting a vague sense of déjà vu, here," Gregory complained as he worked with a computer.
Vanessa stepped up to Roxy, who was attempting to turn a broken computer on. "You sure you're not seeing anything major on what we've opened so far," she asked.
"Well, it's not like I can see any specific programs," she explained hastily, "but I can tell when a lot of data is being stored in one place. And everything we've looked at so far has not had much from what I can tell."
"Ugh, this is so FRUSTRATING!" grumbled Fifi as she shoved a monitor off the desk she was sitting at.
Freddy rushed up behind her. "Calm yourself, Fifi!" he exclaimed. "Getting upset about this is not going to help."
"Well, what is going to help?" she bit back. "Every time we think we catch a lucky break with finding this information, we still come up with nothing! I'm not even seeing a point in coming in here anymore! If I have to look at one more broken computer, I'm going to LOSE MY MIND!"
The mouse punched a hole right through the desk on her last sentence. When she did this, everyone instinctively stepped back. Roxy in particular was shocked at this. Never did she think she would see someone with a worse temper than herself and Monty, especially from someone so small and cute, but that seemed to come pretty close to what either of them would do. And a quick look at Vanessa and Freddy told her they were thinking the same thing.
Fifi stood there panting heavily for a few seconds when Gregory finally stepped towards her.
"We can't give up now," he said sternly. "You know that. It's not like we didn't have to face these setbacks before, but we've been here four days now. If we stop now, this will all be for nothing. Kids will still get hurt, and this company's going to hide it."
Fifi closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "I know…I'm sorry, I just…It happened again. Stupid programming bug."
Freddy wrapped his arms around her shoulders. He knew exactly how she felt from his memories as Michael, and he was going to give her the comfort he never received. Roxy, still unnerved by the whole thing, looked around the room to survey the computers one more time…when she noticed something through the wall.
"Wait!" she exclaimed softly. "What's that?"
Everyone immediately started looking around. "What's what?" Vanessa asked.
"I think there's something in the next room," the wolf explained. "I don't know what it is, but…it looks weird."
"I think I see it as well," said Freddy, following her gaze.
Vanessa looked skeptically at the spot as well. She again became aware of the ability that these two animatronics have to see through walls. Though it may have been a bad idea, she cautiously motioned for the others to follow her, which they did quietly. They exited the office and entered the next room via a door across the hall. Vanessa did an initial sweep before letting the others in behind her.
The room appeared to be another maintenance area for the animatronics. There was a workbench along the wall opposite the door, along with another door labeled 'closet' next to it. Multiple tools were hanging from the wall above the bench and there was a desk with a computer in the corner. Various animatronic parts were scattered across the floor, and there were oil stains on every visible surface. What caught Vanessa's eye, however, was the metal tool cabinet in the middle of the side wall, which seemed normal other than the fact that the inside appeared to be glowing.
"That what you were seeing, Roxy?" the blonde asked, dreading the answer.
"Yep," Roxy said with just as much dread.
Determining the room was otherwise safe, Vanessa led the others in. Against her better judgement, she walked up to the cabinet and grabbed the handle.
"I don't like the looks of this," she said. "Everyone be ready."
They all took a protective stance, and Gregory and Fifi brandished their respective weapons. Likewise, Vanessa readied her taser, and after a few beats, threw the cabinet door open. Thankfully, no attacker came out, but what they did see still had them in shock.
Inside, on each shelf, were rows upon rows of glass bottles containing a milky liquid, which appeared to be the source of the glowing. Though the light emitted from them was white, the liquid itself seemed to change colors on a whim. It seemed to be swirling around in each bottle the colors shifting as it continued to move. It was almost as if it was alive.
Roxy was visibly shaking. "I-Is this that 'Remnant' stuff you guys were talking about?"
"Yes…it is," said Freddy, a scowl forming on his face. "I'd know it anywhere…It seems father has had some more success in having it produced."
"H-Henry said Afton was killing those kids to make it," Fifi said, her hands over her mouth. "If that's true, then that means…I think I'm going to be sick."
Speaking of sick, that's just how Gregory was beginning to feel. Just this short while after the cabinet was opened, his head began throbbing, and nausea quickly hit him. He fell to his knees, gritting his teeth.
"Gregory!" called Freddy, rushing to his friend's side. "Are you alright?"
"I don't know," the boy squeaked out clutching his stomach. He couldn't even think clearly. By this time Vanessa reached him as well, feeling his forehead.
"That stuff doesn't usually effect people like this, does it?" she asked Freddy.
"From just being exposed to it? Not like this," he replied.
Roxy was shaking even more seeing this unfold. She turned back to the cabinet quickly, not wanting to see anymore, and eyed the curious liquid. The more she looked, though, the more she got drawn in by it. Just what was this stuff? Why did Afton want it so bad? Why was he killing kids just so he could get his hands on it? Even after the insane things she was told it could do? The things it was doing to Greg now. There was so much of it there. Maybe she could end things now if she could—
"DON'T TOUCH IT!" Fifi yelled.
Roxy hadn't even realized she was reaching for a bottle; she was so lost in her thoughts. The yelling brought her back to reality, though, and she immediately pulled her hand away.
She looked at Fifi astonishedly. "I-I don't know what happened, I—"
"You have to be more careful around that!" The mouse pressed on. "Didn't you hear what we said earlier? That stuff makes the people Afton killed possess us! You've faced to much here already! You can't add someone else's trauma onto yours! Not now!"
"Exactly right!" exclaimed Vanessa as she closed up the cabinet. "So, we need to leave that alone for now, but I hope that gave you a good reminder of why we're here, Fifi. Your little outburst earlier had me worried we'd be back at square one with you. We need your help, but you have to be willing to help us. That was the agreement. Don't break it!"
Fifi sighed. "I know, and I'm sorry. It won't happen again. I promise."
"And Roxy. BE. CAREFUL. It's good to take some risks, and we're taking a huge one now, but you can't throw caution to the wind like you always did before. You said yourself, you don't want anyone to get hurt, so make sure 'anyone' includes you."
The wolf stepped forward. "Don't worry, I will. It's just…I don't know what I was thinking there. I'll be more careful—I will."
The looked over to see that Gregory was recovering now, and Freddy was helping him up.
"Good," said Vanessa. "Now we've got a whole other side to this building we haven't given a second look at yet. If we don't find anything tonight, we've still got until that S.T.A.F.F. bot shipment comes in on Sunday. There's no pressure on us right now, but we still need to do the best we can to—"
POW!
Everyone jumped when they heard a commotion from the closet. Namely a huge amount of banging on the door along with muffled screams. Freddy pulled Gregory away swiftly, but began to look at the door closely.
"Someone's in there," he said. "It looks like a human."
Vanessa rushed over and kicked down the door. Sure enough, lying in the floor, hogtied and with a bandana over his mouth, was a man that appeared to be in his mid-thirties. He was wearing a tattered and stained business suit and a pair of glasses, and he had auburn hair that was in disarray. Most curiously, however, he had a pin with the Fazbear logo on his lapel. Vanessa instantly knew who he was.
"Holy crap, it's Josh!" she exclaimed in horror.
"What the…the CEO?!" said Gregory.
"The one that went missing?!" shouted Roxy.
"It couldn't be!" exclaimed Freddy. "Could it?"
'Only one way to find out.' Vanessa thought. The man was already attempting to crawl towards her, but she grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and dragged him out of the closet. Once she had him on his knees, she pulled out her pocket knife and cut the bandana loose from around his mouth. He panted for a breath before responding.
"Vanessa?" he questioned. "What are you doing here?"
"I should be asking you that question!" the blonde retorted. "They reported you missing this morning! What happened to you?!"
"I don't know! I just walked out of the office and next thing I know there was a sack over my head and I'm thrown in a truck. I was injected with something and I was surrounded by old animatronics when I came to. They keep sedating me and moving me around…Where am I anyway?!"
Vanessa cut the rope from his hands. "…You're at Fredbear's Family Diner, and I have a feeling I know who brought you here."
"Oh really?" Josh snarked at her. "And what exactly are you doing here? We never assigned you to work here. In fact, from what I hear, you decided to take an unplanned vacation this week. Is dealing with scrap so fun to you that you decided to take a whole week to do it, without proper notice?"
The blonde rolled her eyes as she undid his legs. If she didn't need to be so high up in the company to do what she needed to do, she would have even dealt with this man. Now, he's in danger and the first thing he thinks of is her timesheet? Pathetic.
"You know what?" she responded. "I'll explain it after we get you out of here. It's more dangerous down here than you think, and we don't want any more trouble."
"Well excuse me," he responded, standing up, "but I think I have a right to know what you're doing and why you are using company property to do it." He gestured to the animatronics.
"Ha! You threw two of them down here for scrap and didn't even attempt to locate the other after he ran away! And now they're still company property? No wonder we're going under!"
The animatronics silently cheered for Vanessa sticking up for them.
Josh sighed. "I guess what they say about you is true after all. You complain about the way this company runs things but you don't actually do anything about it. I'd expect more from the daughter of our founder."
"Well, I'd do more you would actually listen to my complaints and let me…Wait. I used a different last name on my applications. How do you know I'm his daughter?"
He stood there with a stoic look on his face and said nothing. The others looked between them quizzically, surprised Vanessa would go that far to protect her identity, but wondering how the CEO would have found out about it. Then Roxy gasped in realization.
"Hold on!" she yelled. "If he was in the closet this whole time, Freddy and I should've seen him through the door! How could he have gotten in there if the door was locked?"
Vanessa's eyes widened and she looked again at the man in front of her.
"Josh," she threatened, "what's going on?"
His face remained stoic for a beat, but in a snap, it twisted into a sinister smile.
"I can't believe you fell for that."
The outside door flew open again and the room was flooded with S.T.A.F.F. bots, which restrained Vanessa before she could even react. The others tried to fight back, but were soon overtaken by the sheer number that appeared in a short amount of time, and were restrained just as quickly. Only Josh was left standing directly in the middle of the room, a satisfied smirk on his face. Worse still, the crimson eyes of a certain bunny mask appeared in the doorway of the closet.
Gregory could only think of one thing in this moment: "Whyyyyy!"
Vanny skipped into the room, giggling crazily.
"There's pathways all over this place that leed to things you wouldn't dream of," she chirped, turning to Roxy. "And Mr. Afton has a way to block them from prying eyes. Especially yours!"
She gave the wolf a playful poke on the nose, and was met with an attempt to bite her hand off. The S.T.A.F.F. bots restraining Roxy pulled her hair back in response.
"Ooh, someone missed their controlled shocks!" the demented rabbit prodded. "Don't worry, you'll get them soon enough." And she skipped over to Josh's side.
"You see, this is the kind of thing we've been working on while you were running your mouth," the executive snarked to Vanessa. "Think of what we could do with this cloaking technology. And you better think now, because you won't have much longer to."
He caressed the blonde's face as he said this. She hated him more now than she ever did.
"Now it's time for me to meet the man of the hour," he continued.
He motioned for the bots restraining Gregory to bring him forward, which they did. He struggled the whole time.
"Let me go you psycho!" the boy yelled, only to be met with a slap in the face.
"You little brat," Josh whispered, leaning in closer. "Do you realize you completely destroyed a twenty-five-million-dollar facility? I don't take kindly to losing that kind of money, kid."
"Don't you worry, Josh," Vanny said as she leaned in next to him. "He'll pay for it soon enough."
Gregory looked down at his arm to see she was injecting him with another sedative. He didn't even have time to think before he blacked out.
A/N And there we go. Were too many of you expecting Josh to actually be in the story, or that he would be a villain? It was always funny to me how Five Nights at Freddy's as a series pokes fun at corporate greed, and I wanted to see how someone working on the corporate side of this company, other than William Afton, would fit into the main horror elements of the series. I also really wanted to make a villain that a person could just love to hate, so please let me know how I'm doing with that. Aside from that, I hope this is really setting your expectations for what's to come, so keep on reading and leave a review if you can. Thank you all so much, and I'll see you next time.
