Shinya sat, staring at the door. His mother held him close to her chest. His father paced around, constantly glancing between him and the door. Mr. Yaso was sitting on his other side, fiddling with the bag he brought with him.

None of it mattered to him. He wasn't paying attention to anything but the door that blocked him from his brother. This wasn't like when he was staring at the clock back at home, waiting for his party to start. There was not a hint of excitement or anticipation to be found as he hunched his tiny, frail shoulders.

He clenched his hands tightly against one another on his lap. The birthday boy wanted this to be a joke. Some stupid surprise prank that his brother convinced their family and Mr. Yaso to participate in. But he knew it wasn't the case, no matter how badly he wanted it to.

The last time he had come here was when he broke his arm. He remembered being on an uncomfortable bed with doctors poking and prodding him. His long healed arm twitched as the memories came back.

Everything from the ugly, irritating cast on his wrist to the disgusting hospital food was just awful. He remembered telling his brother, who held all his stuff when the nurses finally let him go home that he never wanted to come back here again.

Takuya...he said he hoped there'd never be a reason for any of them to come back. Which made it all the more painful knowing that his brother was here. Especially since he knew it wasn't the older boy's fault. He wasn't told by Mr. Yaso or anything like that, but he knew his brother.

He wasn't stupid. With all the times he lectured Shinya on road safety and everything else, there was no explanation other than the fact that the driver was the one responsible. Takuya...he prayed with all his heart that he would be ok. The door opened...revealing one of the doctors.

"I'm sorry..."

He would never ask for anything again. He didn't need it.

"Doctor? What are you-"

Shinya would stop taking his brother's things.

"We tried our best...but there's nothing more we can do."

He'd stop arguing.

"What are you saying!? He can't..."

Just please...don't take him away.

"Shinya. Here." The boy jerked his head up, startled to find the bag Mr. Yaso had in his face. "Wh-what?" While his parents were arguing with the doctor, crying Mr. Yaso offered him a teary smile. "You're brother wanted you to have this." His brother?

Shaking hands grabbed the bag, opening it up. He choked, seeing what it was. "This is..." It was the game from Mr. Yaso's store. The one he was going to buy with his birthday money. "Takuya had been doing extra chores for the last few weeks. Your mother called me to let me know he was on his way to pick it up."

The bag in his hands crinkled in his grip as tears rolled down his face. He was wondering who his mom was talking to after he cleaned his room. "No." That stupid, goggle wearing brother of his. He promised him he got something really special for him this year.

And because of that promise he- Shinya stood up from his seat, running straight for the operating room's door. "Shinya!" His birthday gift was left behind as he rushed past his parents and the doctor. Faintly he heard the door leading to the waiting room open but he didn't care.

He had far more important things to worry about. With all his strength, he smashed open the door. "What in the!?" There were four adults all dressed in green scrubs. Everything except for their eyes was covered. Gloves, masks, hats...some of them even had goggles shielding their gazes.

"Who let a kid in?" Blood was splattered on them. Each of them had various odd tools in their hands. In the center of them was a bed and several different beeping, blinking machines. "Takuya..." On the bed, with wires on all parts of his body was his brother. "TAKUYA!" His eyes were opened but he didn't look his way.

His mouth was open with some weird dome thing covering it but he wasn't speaking. He wasn't breathing. Sobbing, Shinya pushed past them, grabbing his brother's hand. It was still warm, yet slack in his hold. "Wake up! Come on!"

On the back of his shirt, he felt someone tugging, trying to pull him away. "Kid this isn't the place to be." Shinya shook his head, tightly holding onto his sibling. No matter what he wasn't leaving. Not until his brother woke up to tell him to get out.

"Please...you promised it would be my best birthday ever. Don't leave me!"

"Everyone ok?" Koji got confirmation on all sides, causing great relief. He sighed before narrowing his eyes back up to the sky. They had just landed back in the forest of darkness that was far brighter and lusher than when they were last there.

Takuya wasn't back yet. "Ohhhhhh! You guys are back!" Bokomon, Neemon and Patamon all leaped towards them, hugging the children tightly in their fluffy arms. Tears poured by the buckets out of their eyes as they shouted out their joy and relief.

Yet despite the happiness around him, he couldn't relax just yet. "Look look! Mamapa the holes are being fixed!" A bright light floated gently down, suddeny the warrior of light saw the land restoring to its proper form.

All the patches and missing bits of land were being filled in with fractal code. It only meant one thing. "He won." Koichi spoke his thoughts outloud, but just like him, his gaze was full of worry. Where was that idiot?

A sense of dread filled them as they waited. "Where's Takuya?" No one answered Bokomon's question. There wasn't a single person in the group who wanted to think the worst. "He's...probably on his way." They would rather believe JP, even if the older boy wasn't too sure himself if that statement was true.

"What's wrong guys?" The desire to strangle was strong as Solfernomon gently came down. They saw him return back to his human form, falling to his knees. All of them ran desperately to his side, but Tommy was the fastest.

The little boy pounced on him, wrapping his arms tight around the teen's neck. "I knew you'd be ok." With a soft smile, Takuya returned the embrace, looking up with sad eyes. "I'm glad you're all safe." Something didn't feel right to Koji.

That dread still lingered. "Takuya?" Horror gripped the warrior of light as he saw a white outline around his friend. "What's going on?" Koichi looked faint, ready to collapse right then in there when the pyromancer let Tommy go, taking a few steps back. "My purpose has ended. I'm here to say goodbye."

Koichi choked, his hand outstretched, unable to speak. "What are you saying Takky? We beat the bad guy! Why the hell are you going?!" The warrior of flames shook his head. The glow around him grew brighter.

"It's time for me to return to the human world and reunite with my body." Koji tried to grab him, not even aware until his hand went right through Takuya's body that he was even moving. "What do you mean by that Takuya? You're here with us!"

His direction turned to Zoe. "Sorry, but there was one last secret I hid from some of you. What has been bound here this whole time helping you is my soul. I've been here too long though, my physical body is failing." She gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

JP clutched her shoulder. "For now...I gotta part ways with you all. I'm not going to lie, I'm scared to see what will happen to me, but no matter what I want to say thank you. For believing in me, supporting me. You are all my dear friends and I pray I get to see you guys back home." He was even more transparent now.

Looking like the ghost he was claiming to be. "Takuya please..." The brunette walked towards his collapsed lover. The warrior of darkness couldn't feel the hand that cupped his jaw, or the kiss that was planted to his forehead.

"The spirits are going to give me a fighting chance so this isn't the end. Wait for me?" Koji felt so helpless watching. "Of course. No matter where you are, I'll find you. Don't you dare give up."

His friend was fading away and there was nothing he could do. "Bokomon, Neemon, Patamon, thank you for helping us on this journey." He didn't bother saying it, but the bandana wearing teen knew Takuya and his spirits fought with everything they had. That battle costed him everything.

For once though Takuya's face wasn't full of anguish while talking about his human world body. If anything, there was hope. What did he mean by saying his spirits were going to give him a fighting chance.

"Koji...I know I don't have any right to ask, but...mind watching over everyone for me?" His vision blurred at the stinging sensation in his eyes. "You don't have to ask." That wasn't what he wanted to say.

If anything it was the exact opposite. Koji has come a long way from being the lone wolf he was, but he wanted to offer some sort of reassurance. A promise that things would be ok. "Thanks." Despite it all, it seemed like Takuya understood him.

However, no one else could say another word before Takuya completely disappeared. His body fading into the light. "TAKUYAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
