Chapter 7
For a while, I remained motionless, just letting the snow fall over me and cover my body.
I had failed to slay the monster who killed so many of Satus' villagers. I only managed to take his eye, which is completely useless as he's a Servant.
How pathetic.
I guess becoming a competent fighter in two weeks is too much to ask for.
I sigh as I get up, shaking off the snow from my red haori.
No sense in moping, I guess, since this is my new reality after all.
Checking my "inventory", I saw that my Assassin's armour/cloak, together with my hidden blades and eagle-pommeled sword and dagger - the last one I'd never even used - were in there. And I had a feeling that putting on those clothes out would allow me to use my Assassin sub-Class, but since the whole reason for me to visit these Worlds was to awaken my Noble Phantasms, I would leave that for emergencies. The sleeping clothes I had received from Satus' seamstress was also there.
Another thing that I noticed in my inventory was a katana in there, alongside it's scabbard, which I equipped, and after appreciating how cool I looked, I picked a direction in this freezing taiga, and started moving.
As I walked through the forest, I couldn't help but marvel at the sight of so much snow.
My brother would have loved this place.
After smiling softly, I shook my head, and focused once again on my surroundings, this time paying attention to see if I could finds any signs of human activity. However, to my chagrin, I found nothing aside from some nuts and a white fox.
I ate the nuts, but left the fox alone. Or at least, I tried to…
"You're really far too friendly for your own good, huh? Don't you have a family to go back to?" I asked it rhetorically, while scratching behind it's fluffy ears.
I was very surprised when it shook it's head at me, answering my question.
"No family, then? So, you're alone here as well?"
It nodded, and looked up with those big eyes, trying to make me feel bad for it.
How cunning.
"Well, I could use some company, I guess." I relented, extending my hand so it could climb to my shoulder, which it did after squealing in glee, and then I resumed my walking.
"Well, I think you need a name. Bark once for boy, twice for girl, third for neutral.
She barked twice, so I named her Kori.
As night approached, I decided to make camp behind one of the pine trees, in a spot that was pretty insulated by the snow. After gathering some branches and lighting some dry grass from a squirrel nut stash that I found in another tree close by, I used those to start a campfire. Although the protection against the cold would be better if I dug a snow cave, I didn't really have to worry about freezing as a Servant, and with my body and the fire constantly providing heat, Kori didn't either.
And it was the sound produced by my sleeping companion who was snuggled against my chest, together with the crackling from the campfire and the howls of the wind that lulled me into sleeping.
Apparently, what I heard before falling asleep were wolves howling, not the wind, and it seems they managed to track my scent until the tree beneath which I slumbered.
Fortunately, my Servant instincts alerted me to the danger that was coming, and so I wasn't caught unaware.
I was surprised by how big the wolves were alongside the runic patterns they had in their fur. Those strange markings were glowing blood red, and that made them seem even more mysterious and ominous in the dark of the night. Although, I was really puzzled by the practicality or lack thereof of shining when they were creatures that used the shadows of the night to hunt.
Regardless, it didn't take much effort from my part to defeat them, as they were a group of only five after all. It was actually a great thing that they appeared, as their bodies provided me with a lot of meat and other useful resources like their pelts, hides and bones.
Although Kori enjoyed herself when we woke up the next morning by gorging on the wolf meat, she seemed really grumpy after I woke her up to fight, and kept growling at me while I harvested the wolves with the help of my Assassin dagger and covered the traces of blood with snow, and she kept doing that until I finally came back to our little hide out, where she promptly jumped at me when I lied down and proceeded to return to her sleep.
What a troublesome little lady.
After our lavish breakfast, I once again started walking, trying to find other people in this frozen jungle, but it was to no avail. No matter how long I looked, I never found anyone.
I did find a frozen river, where I dug a hole to fish with my new magical wolf bone dagger, that I crafted on the spot just to dig that hole, before realizing I had no fishing line.
Kori didn't stop giving me an amused look while I made one from the really resistant wolf fur we had, and it only got worse when I realized I had no hook either and had to craft one from the bones.
Fortunately, I managed to get quite a few catches, and she stopped looking at me like that when I gave her one big fish for her to feast on.
After looking a while longer, I stopped once again to make a temporary shelter by a pine tree, and this time my sleep wasn't interrupted by any Magical Beasts.
Instead, I dreamt of a man dancing on ice with a sword that left a blazing trail whenever he swung it.
And that was the seventh chapter, hope you guys enjoyed it.
Jacob's clothing is the same as Yoriichi's attire from Demon Slayer, which is very similar to Yagyu's clothing from F/GO. His katana is the same as Tanjiro's sword, and if you want to better visualize it in real life, I recommend watching the video from "That Works" on youtube where it's shown all the steps taken to craft a katana, plus explanation about the art of crafting the blade as well. It's very educational overall.
The man in his dreams is not Yoriichi from demon slayer, and that is all I'll tell for now.
