Chapter 10
The first "Small Boss" we had to fight was a wolf.
No surprise there.
It was much bigger than any other we had faced until now, which also wasn't a surprise.
It also could create a magical shield around itself and launch magical attacks at us.
…
That was a bit surprising, even more so considering that the only magical thing about the other wolves we met were those colorful runes, and they only seemed to reinforce the characteristics already possessed by the wolves, like speed, durability and strength.
The ability to launch energy bullets just seemed really random, and out of place.
And if it wasn't for Medea, I would probably have died to those things.
Thankfully, she used one of those strings of hers to pull me away from danger, and then sent her small army of skeletons to distract the beast while we discussed how to deal with it.
"Thanks for the save." I smiled at her, before turning towards our now occupied enemy, trying to analyze his fighting patterns, so I could find openings more easily when the time I had to fight it eventually came.
"No problems. Just be more careful. Kori will be really mad at you if you die so easily." I rolled my eyes at the smirking witch. "You think you will manage it?"
"If I just need to keep it down and break it's shield so you can use your Noble Phantasm to defeat it, right? It seems feasible. It's quite convenient that your Noble Phantasm can basically defeat it by just stabbing it, by the way."
"It's only because it's existence is sustained by the Divine Beast's power, while at the same time anchoring the barriers that protect the beast. When I use Rule Breaker, not only it'll destroy it's role as one of the shields' anchor by breaking their connection, but also severe it's prana supply, which will make it disappear as long as we cause it enough damage." She emphasized the fact that we still had to fight the thing afterwards, probably because the first time she explained the plan to me me I thought the fight would be over when she stabbed it.
"Right. So I just hold it down, and then you'll stab it, and we'll beat it up."
"…Yes." She facepalmed for some reason.
"Then, I guess it's time to put the plan into practice." I said while I unsheathed my sword, right as the last bone soldier fell and the creature's attention returned to us.
"Good luck." She whispered as I charged towards the first obstacle to releasing this world.
It wasn't that hard to fight the wolf, since it's attack patterns were very similar to the smaller ones, just a bit more complicated due to it's magical prowess, but with Medea supporting me by intercepting the attacks I couldn't dodge, it was only a matter of time before we could manage to bring down it's shield.
And just as I expected, with a mighty flaming swing from my sword, it finally shattered, giving my witch companion the opportunity needed to stab the wolf.
Then the creature went Berserker.
It's eyes became bloodshot, it's movements more erratic, and it became a lot stronger.
The last one I learned the hard way, when it hit me and sent me crashing through a wall.
Medea, as the more experienced one, managed to evade it's charge by flying away, and then she started blasting it from the air, lookin like some weird magical butterfly.
After gathering myself, I rushed to aid her.
I dodged the monster's attacks, slashing it whenever possible, managing to anger it as the wounds that immediately cauterized caused it immense pain.
After a long battle filled with many close calls, I finally decapitated our enemy in a flaming circle that was, according to Medea, a work of art.
And so, we defeated the first of three.
After that, we harvested the wolf's body, and started our journey to the other two lairs.
Which were, unfortunately quite far apart among themselves, which meant that unlike the first one, it would take a few days of travel to reach them, giving enough time for the number of wolves that we had to fight to grow considerably.
The good side of this long journey was the chance to bond with the friendly ice spirit and fellow Servant, and despite the encounters we had with many wolf packs, the atmosphere between us remained quite peaceful. We bantered quite a bit, but I also received plenty instruction from the ancient witch.
It's a shame it wasn't meant to last.
As we faced the second boss, I realized that the threat level had indeed increased, but it such an insignificant increase that after the first one we fought, defeating it was very easy.
…Far too easy.
I had a bad feeling on my gut, and I noticed the same from Medea.
While we had met some wolf packs, before now it had not occurred to me, but…
"There were less wolves than the first time." Medea said what was on my mind.
"…Do you think the amount that can be produced is limited? Or that maybe whoever is behind this, they are concentrating their armies at their main base?" I asked her quietly.
"…I don't think it's so simple. Without one of the three bosses, the amount of magical energy available is enough to strengthen the other two significantly. That added to the amount of smaller wolves we killed before, should have made up for quite the challenge for us. If they didn't increase the defenses of the barrier…" She didn't need to continue.
The Destroyer is waiting for us.
Our fears seemed to hold some truth to them when we went to bring down the last barrier, as we met nearly no wolves on the way, and the boss was as easy to take down as the second one. And they were all but confirmed on our trek towards the lair of the Destroyer, for we met no resistance to our advance in our days of travel. The atmosphere, once light, was now as dark as our surroundings, where a seemingly everlasting night seemed to encompass us on our last day of journey.
All was not dark and depressing though.
After all, since she managed to gather enough magical material from the wolf bosses, Medea finally crafted something that could help us fight our last enemy.
"An armor? I thought you were going to sacrifice the material, or something like that?" I asked while looking curiously at the traditional samurai armor she gave me.
"I've made sure the armor can protect you from divine attacks. If the Divine Beast is behind all this, it will also absorb it's energy as the fight proceeds, increasing your power while weakening the enemy's…"
"But you don't think it's going to be the Divine Beast, do you?"
"…No. So I made an armor that can protect you regardless, instead of preparing a ritual that will most likely not help us at all." She sighed.
"Thanks. I guess it's time, huh?"
"Indeed."
And so, we entered the cave that was releasing an enormous amount of Divine Energy.
As Medea predicted, the one behind it all wasn't the Divine Beast from which all the wolves were created. After all, above it's corpse were the floating flames that acted as a Holy Grail, both on the inside of a shield by the side of the cavern.
"So, you finally arrived. The ones seeking to undo this beautiful world that I've created."
The Destroyer was most likely the Ice Giant staring at us from a massive crystal throne.
"You might've killed Fenrir's clones, but don't think that's enough to show that you are worthy of fighting against me."
With a move of his hands, the Holy Flames seemed to seep within Fenrir's deceased body, and it's eyes opened, releasing a burning glow. The flames healed the beast, and the resurrected monster started walking towards us as fire surrounded it.
"Prove yourselves worthy of the enmity of Surtr, the Destroyer."
Sorry for the wait, but now I won't be able to update as often as I did with the first 9 chapters. Hope you guys liked it.
And yes, calling Surtr an Ice Giant was on purpose.
