Chapter 13

"Your time of reckoning?" I looked at her curiously, before finishing up my bed. As we'd ended tidying everything up, she motioned to me that I should follow, before going to the kitchen and fetching us something to drink. I don't know the level of development of this place, but they apparently had fridges, western cookware, stoves and many other appliances.

"Many years ago, an island emerged from the depths of the sea, with many mysterious buildings being found in it. Our ancestors, when investigating found libraries filled with knowledge from before the Age of Calamities, that followed the Age of Men, and was when humanity fell from power. Most surviving humans left for the stars, and the ones left were those isolated enough to not be main targets for the Calamities, whose offspring were mostly killed by themselves after they restored balance to the world, and then they went to slumber."

She paused, seemingly lost in memories.

"We thought those were just legends, before the island arose. And because of that, we made the mistake of messing with the island's temples cult objects, and angered a Calamity. Since humanity on Earth as a whole is no longer a threat, it didn't bother slaughtering all of us. Instead, it chose to play with us. Every 20 years, we have to send men to fight in the island to amuse the Calamity. If we don't send enough men, monsters come in great numbers to our village. If we send them, only a few stragglers like the Shark Soldier that attacked you and Ina would be seen around."

"Why don't you send the women to fight as well? From what I've seen, you are pretty fearsome yourself." She easily lifted a boulder to help clear a path when leading me and Inana to her home.

…I still don't understand what it was doing there, though.

"The monsters only kill the men, but they devour any woman they happen to defeat. They also do that to kids, which is why Ina was targeted. And why I am always worried about her, since she haven't learned to protect herself."

"…I'm sorry for bringing such a heavy topic."

Sina smiled softly at me, and shaked her head.

"It's fine. I understand that as a Servant, you probably came from a much different place and time than this."

I nodded at her, and was about to sip on my tea when my brain noticed what Sina said and I froze, which lead her to smirk.

"Magecraft may have dwindled during the Age of Men, but with the coming of the Calamities, it rekindled once again. And while it is true that most mages left the world, and as such didn't experience it for long, my family was among those who ended up staying."

"Being a mage doesn't mean you would know about Servants so well." I narrowed my eyes at her.

"Indeed, it doesn't." She surprised me by agreeing, then smirked once again. "But my ancestors were a part of the Tohsaka family, and helped create a ritual known as the Grail War in Japan, which used Servants to perform a battle royal among mages. So I know more than most."

"…Well, at least I don't need to make an excuse anymore. Yes, I am a Servant, and I plan to help you people against this Calamity. So please, tell me how to find those warriors of yours before it is too late."

"Do you really think you can bring it down?"

"You are knowledgeable about Servants, right? So don't worry, I'll make sure they all come back alive and well."

We looked at each other in silence for a few moments, before she caved in.

"Fine, I'll tell you how to get to the island. But you'll only leave in the morning." I stopped myself from arguing when when she stared me down. "You need to say good bye to Ina, and that's that. I won't let her feel sad when her friend mysteriously disappears without warning and never comes back. Am I clear?"

"Yes, ma'am!"

"Not so loud!"

"Sorry!"

Sina didn't give much detail in the way of instructions about how to reach the island, only telling me to walk along the beach in the opposite direction I brought Inana from, but as I walked far enough away from the village, I started seeing a dot in the distance, and it grew to become a massive island, with a mountain in the middle. And there was a coral reef leading to it.

I would question the physics involved with such a massive piece of land rising and descending in the sea, if I didn't know that the Mystery here was strong once again.

As I travelled towards the monster infested island, I briefly looked at the small pendant with a glowing red totem that Inana gave me. She had apparently found it on the same day she met me, and thought it would bring good luck.

I thought it was a bit too coincidental, but looking at her bright eyes, I couldn't bring myself to refuse.

But I couldn't shake the feeling that it carried something inside. Something…

…Ominous.

And on that note, it's the end of the chapter, hope you guys liked it.

Yes, Inana and Sina are Rin's descendants, in case it wasn't obvious. Just to clarify, Inana is another possible name for Ishtar, so guess from where did she inherit her appearance? She just has a darker skin tone due to the many generations her family remained by the coast.

And yes, Sina is still aware of her family's origins, mainly because of her magical crest.

As for the identity of the Calamity awaiting Jacob…

…Stay tuned for the next chapter!
