Chapter 14
Sina gave the route that went through the reef that connected the island to the coast for the two weeks that the Blood Moon would remain, of which four days had already passed, meaning I had a bit over nine days to reach Inana's dad, and then make sure he and all the other warriors survive, before fighting against the Calamity of the Seas. Easy.
Except for the hundreds of monsters blocking the way to the island, to ensure that the battle between men and beasts that was happening in a week from now would go uninterrupted, and that there were a few dozen much stronger creatures waiting for me at the end, plus the gargantuan monster that helped bring humanity's downfall hundreds of years ago that I would need to defeat to truly save this people.
On the bright side, while there were many creatures blocking my way, they were mostly weak ones, like the Shark Soldier I defeated, and some Sea Demons, Giant Crabs and Skeleton Soldiers.
…The last ones were dressed as pirates for reasons that elude me, as we aren't in the Caribbean.
It took me quite a few days to get to the villagers, since dealing with enemies while searching for them in this massive piece of land took far too long, as I kept having my considerations cut short for meaningless battles. Although something that I noticed as I kept slaying monsters was that every time one fell, the totem in the necklace would briefly glow red for some reason.
And as I entered the massive coliseum, I finally saw that Sina's words regarding the enemies they had to fight rang true.
"So, that's what hydras really look like, huh? I thought they would look more like the Elder Dragon, but with many heads."
Instead, what greeted me was the sight of many men working together to bring down four really big serpents with many heads.
And although they were winning, it was obvious it wouldn't be without cost.
My thoughts proved to be true as a warrior was about to be struck from behind as he concentrated in dealing with another Hydra.
So, to stop him from dying in vain, I charged.
We were really unlucky to have so many Hydras thrown at us right from the bat. We had been waiting in the sunken village, near the ancient coliseum for the day the fighting would start, and I was really nervous since this would be my first time fighting against the menace that plagued our people for so long. And from what I was taught since my youth, chances of returning were quite slim, as around half of us would sink with this island, which was why having many children was encouraged.
But I didn't have many, only one. My precious Ina.
And as I felt a chill crawl up my back, with a shadow coming from above me, I realised I would never see my girls again.
Or at least, that's what I thought, before a squelch sound was heard, and the arena became silent as a massive head fell by my side.
When I turned to look at my savior, I was stunned to see a man wearing a pig mask that covered his entire head except for his mouth and chin.
And my surprise didn't end there, as he proceeded to throw the Hydra that tried to kill me into the one which I was helping to fight against.
Breaking from my stupor, I joined the other warriors to fight the remaining two Hydras, as the stranger matched the other two by himself, and he defeated both at the same time we killed one, and then he helped us defeat the last one.
...Who is this guy?
I didn't get the chance to ask, as more monsters entered the arena.
So, for many hours, this pig stranger proceeded to slaughter most of the creatures the appeared, and for the first time in the history of our village since this island appeared, not one warrior perished to the sea creatures.
When the last of the twenty trials ended, after resting for a while, we all looked at the man who singlehandedly turned the tides of our battle without even breaking a sweat.
"So, which one of you guys is Ina's father, Tui?"
Now all the eyes looked at me.
"That would be me."
"Your daughter and wife are worried about you, so you guys should speed up and leave the island."
"…Thank you for your aid. Do you need a ride back?"
He shook his head, and so we left to the boats we used to get here.
…I am going to need to talk to Ina about strangers when I come back.
Again.
As I watched the villagers leave, I awaited for the Calamity that was going to appear at the end of the last Blood Moon day.
As the sky started to get darker, it was then overridden with the crimson hue I have gotten used to in this last week, and soon enough a blood-red moon was shining atop the island.
The sound of splashing attracted my attention back to the water, only to see a massive column rising from the sea.
Just like dragons create wyverns, I can now assume those Hydras were created by this colossal serpent.
It's scales were a deep blue, with sea green tribal markings covering It's torso and the top of It's head. It's eyes made me think for a second that two new Blood Moons had appeared, but the black sclera proved otherwise. And to top it off, It's teeth seemed to be made of crystal. And what I at first thought to be a horn, was actually a titanic dorsal fin along It's back ending on It's head.
"So, you're the one they call Leviathan?"
"Roooaaaaaaaaar!"
Fourteenth chapter, out and about. So yeah, the Calamity of the Seas is Leviathan. Not the whale, though.
In the next few chapters, the Lancer arc will be over, and the we will have the last sub-Class arc. After which, aside from perhaps an interlude chapter or two, we will finally get to meet the Chaldeans.
Hope you guys are enjoying it so far.
