"I did not feed the next night, as Flynn had told me. It would give me an edge. And I felt it. I felt the rage bubbling up in me, thinking of Wendy and what they had done to her (Irina had told me that she would not survive Crandall's draining of her knowledge), thinking of the woman that Irina had killed and I had failed to protect, had failed even to sense what had been done to her.

"The strength of the hunger tore at me. I had become accustomed to the routine of visiting my… my sources, being careful of how much I took and putting them on their ease. I had come to think that I had tamed the fury inside me. That Kisasi had done his worst and I had mostly overcome it.

"But the beast was there. Ready to pounce and overwhelm me. As it had done with Uncle Jacob. As it had done with Rupert Clark. That it was done to protect those I cared about did not change the fire within me. I was dangerous. I was deadly.

"And now I was pointed in Maurice Crandall's direction"

"Stop this!" Crandall shook the will-of-the-wisp "Get out of electric grid!"

The will-of-the-wisp laughed "Make me stop! You cannot!"

The lights flickered in and out around the house, and small explosions could be heard as lightbulbs exploded and fuses blew all over the neighborhood.

"Stop!"

Irina laughed.

"You cannot control her. She is not bound as I am."

"I will make you obey me!" Crandall gestured towards the will-of-the-wisp, who doubled in pain. But the flickering lights, short blackouts, and small explosions continued.

That was when Amos bust in.

"I saw Crandall dealing with the electric crisis, but that was not what I cared about. I saw Wendy, slumped on a chair, very pale, not moving.. I thought that I had come too late. The rage consumed me."

"What did you do to her?" Amos shouted as he lunged, fangs bared, towards Crandall. He reached for the man, but could not touch him.

There was an invisible barrier.

"You think that I cannot defend myself against vampires? How foolish you are.' He gestured towards him and Amos felt thrown against the wall.

"How did you find me?" he turned to Irina. "it was you, wasn't it? You asked him to help you. Well, my dear, I will make you regret it!"

He advanced towards Amos, laughing. "You will feel my power Mr. Benchley. I will make you regret intefering with me.

Then there was a shot. And another. There was a look of surprise in Crandall's face as he fell.

Flynn Eagleton stood there, the gun in his hand. "The bullets have been treated with a substance that eats away sorcerer's power." He smiled, unpleasantly. "You knew how to protect yourself from fae, vampires, werewolves, other sorcerers, but you never worried about normal average people like us. We were beneath your notice. Well, you have learned different today."
