"So, what was Leonore doing, the way you remember it?' Wendy asked.

"Not much, not at that time. She did talk to Charlie often, letting him believe that she was her only friend. It is just that she had those talks while sitting in front of the fireplace. But again, for a while it was just her venting about losing her power… it got tiring after a while so that neither Dinah nor Louis paid that much attention to her"

"And in the meantime, you had to figure out where the medal came from"

"Beverly was the one who traced her, with her knowledge of history. She traced it to a local jeweler, Gervase Louvois."

"I am sorry, miss" Gervase Louvois said with a superior smile. "We have a strict policy of confidentiality to our clients."

"This is an old medal. The person who commissioned it is probably dead."

"Dead or alive, the confidentiality stands. Either the heirs know of it and they want to keep the knowledge to themselves, or the one who commissioned it did not want his heirs to know of it, and we respect his wishes."

"You say he. It was a man who commissioned it."

"It might as well be a woman. All I know it was a client. Our firm prides itself in keeping our clients' secrets."

Beverly gave up. She had to ask a lawyer if anything had to be done. She had to ask Albert Thatcher.

"You realize that I cannot ask a judge to give us a search warrant." Albert said, amused. "This is not a law enforcement agency, after all."

"So, there is no legal way to do it?" Amos intervened.

"No, no legal way" Dinah said.

"Dinah, I know what you are thinking. Breaking and entering is illegal. As a lawyer I have to warn you to remain within the law."

"But."

"You cannot do what you are thinking. You are now working for an officer of the law. If you were caught, you realize what would happen to you, and to me?"

"I realize."

"Good. I want to hear no more of those suggestions."

"But there is a way." Amos said "I could…"

"I vigorously entreat you not to break the law, no matter for what good end. I do not want to hear any more of your suggestions."

Amos left, wondering what to do next.

Dinah raced to him. "All right, let's plan how to do it"

"But Albert…"

"You heard him. If we get caught, he will be in trouble. So, we make sure we are not caught"

"But he…"

"As an officer of the law he has to warn us. He warned us. It is up to us to heed the warning or not."
