Korra

Kuvira stalked towards them, waiting for their answer. When none came, she spoke again.

"Come now," she said. "You don't need to run from me."

"You didn't need to attack us," Suyin pointed out.

A few of Kuvira's men started towards them, but the Great Uniter held up an arm to stop them; clearly, she intended to take them all on alone.

"I intend to root out every trace of treason in this country," she said. "Including here."

"There was no trace!" Lin told her.

"And how would you know that?" Kuvira rounded on her. "You don't live here!"

She paused theatrically.

"Although that is a good question, what is the Chief of the Republic City police doing interfering in an internal conflict in a different country? I saw your men, and I see your airships; am I to understand that the United Republic has taken a side? You do have a habit of sticking your noses in where it's not wanted."

"No!" Lin insisted. "I'm here without permission!"

"Oh dear," Kuvira chuckled. "Someone's about to get fired!"

"So be it," Lin stated.

"Maybe I should deliver you back myself," Kuvira mused. "It might be amusing to watch Raiko grovel pathetically on your behalf. And even funnier to watch him throw you in jail."

Korra had had enough, and with a roar she ripped up a house and sent it flying at the Great Uniter. Kuvira reacted quickly, and ripped the entire building in half before throwing it back. She followed this up with a rapid volley of metal aimed at all three of their opponents. Lin caught one half of the building, Suyin the other, but they quickly had to move them to intercept the metal projectiles; Korra heard the thunks as they hit the buildings, before the houses were sent skidding along the floor towards Kuvira. The great Uniter moved her arms up quickly and two pillars of rock thrust themselves up out of the ground just in front and to either side of her; the houses hit them and spun away, leaving her unharmed.

She responded with more strips of metal, sending them racing towards necks and wrists and ankles, anything to snag an opponent and immobilise them. Her three opponents ducked and weaved, trying desperately to avoid them. Lin whipped one out of the air with her cable.

"Any ideas?"

Her only answer was blast of lightning from an airship that streaked out of the sky, causing everyone's hair to stand on end and exploding between them; for a moment, the Great Uniter was obscured by smoke, and then she was back, charging forwards with a snarl on her face. Lin's cable whizzed towards her but Kuvira stopped, braced herself, caught it around her wrist and pulled. Lin yelped in surprise as she was pulled off her feet and sent flying towards her opponent, Kuvira smirking as she used her armour to lift her up. Lin braced herself as Korra stomped on the ground, shifting the earth beneath Kuvira's feet and causing her to stumble. This released Lin and the Police chief turned her flight into a roundhouse kick that knocked Kuvira over. The Great Uniter had enough poise left to turn the fall into a roll, and came up bloodied but grinning. Her hair had come loose, and hung around her shoulders giving her a wild look.

"This is the most fun I've had in ages," she announced.

"It's not meant to be fun," Lin snarled.

"Not for you," Kuvira replied, and charged. She knocked Lin's cable aside and punched the older woman square across the face, before metalbending the cable and sending it like a whip towards the others. Suyin ducked under it, Korra airbent herself over it, before launching a fireball. Kuvira's eyes widened, and she made a movement with her arms. Lin was picked up again, Kuvira controlling her armour, and held in front of the Great Uniter as Korra realised what was about to happen and let the blast fizzle out before it could reach her.

Kuvira smirked and dropped Lin, who crumpled onto the floor just as Suyin's attack, a large Boulder, came soaring in from the left. Kuvira noticed it at the last second and jumped, spinning as she sank into the ground and it flew harmlessly overhead, crashing into a nearby building and narrowly missing one of the soldiers who formed a cordon around the battle.

Nothing happened for a second. Despite the battle raging around them, the area inside the cordon seemed strangely quiet as Lin picked herself up again.

Then the ground rumbled, and split. Kuvira rocketed several feet into the air, extending her arms as another wave of razor-sharp metal strips streaked towards her targets. Korra jumped backwards, metal embedding itself into the earth just in front of her as Kuvira landed smoothly, just pausing to dust herself off. Her whole demeanour exuded arrogance and confidence.

Korra and Suyin exchanged a look. Then they jumped forwards, Suyin darting to the left and Korra to the right. Lin turned, and lunged towards Kuvira, hoping to distract her. Kuvira rolled under her strike and knocked her feet out from under her, just as Suyin dived underground and Korra leapt into the air, using her airbending to propel herself high into the sky before changing direction to launch herself towards the Great Uniter's head. Kuvira turned, saw her, her eyes widened, and at the same time Suyin burst up out of the floor aiming for her feet. The two impacted at the same time and Kuvira was flipped over, before landing heavily on her back. A huff of air escaped her, and she gasped for breath. Suyin and Korra landed, and steadied themselves as Kuvira struggled back to her feet. She snarled, and gave a hand signal. Suddenly, metal strips rocketed towards Lin and Suyin, forcing them to duck and dodge and weave. With horror, Korra realised they were being herded away from her. She made to follow, but soon they had been lost in the crowd and her path was blocked by Kuvira.

Only the distant sounds of conflict could be heard as Kuvira grinned.

"We've got to stop meeting like this, Avatar."

"Nothing would please me more."

Korra thrust her arm forward, knocking Kuvira off her feet with a gust of wind, but Kuvira steadied herself by burying her own feet in rock for a second, and replied with a metal strip that scythed through the wind and narrowly missed Korra's face. She winced, realising the near miss, and Kuvira exploited this by shifting the ground to knock her over. Immediately though, Korra was back on her feet, and she launched a fire blast at Kuvira.

"Do you really think you can win?" Kuvira asked mockingly, as she rolled out of the way.

"Yes," Korra answered in between strikes.

Kuvira only chuckled. "We shall see."

But as the battle wore on, the two women exchanging ferocious blows, it became increasingly clear that Kuvira had the better of the engagement. Without numbers on her side, Kuvira was faster, and Korra was tiring. She only barely dodged a shard of metal, and glanced up quickly. She caught a glimpse of a platform suspended in midair between the city above and the airships below, before her attention was drawn back to her opponent.

Kuvira smirked, and then the battle was on again, a flurry of blows given and received as the two engaged in a blur of violence. Korra sent a stream of water from a nearby fountain at Kuvira's chest, but the Great Uniter dodged it and kicked Korra backwards. The Avatar growled, and responded with another fire blast that was met with a flurry of boulders and metal. The two strikes met in the middle with an explosion of energy, but one Boulder got through and slammed into Korra's forehead.

The Avatar was thrown backwards, groaning on the ground as Kuvira advanced triumphantly.

"Looks like you spoke too soon!" She crowed. "now what should I do with you?

She never got the chance to find out, for a wave of heat raced towards them, followed by a wall of lava that forced the Great Uniter backwards. Korra groaned and sat up, rubbing her head.

When the lava finally dropped, the ground in between the Avatar and the Great Uniter was suddenly molten. Kuvira's spent metal shards lay sizzling and melting in a pool of lava, slowly mixing with it. Simultaneously, both of them turned to look at the source of the lava.

"What are you doing?" An angry voice demanded.

Bolin stood there, having seen the fight. He looked equal parts confused and furious. He glared at his boss.

"Well?"
