Chapter 05: Meeting New Heroes (Edited)

"Now class can anyone tell me about some recent events?" The history teacher Mrs. Nichols asked.

She was an old woman with light skin, combed back silver hair with streaks of black, and hazel eyes.

"I just had math class." Flash said and Danny felt a brief smiling forming on his face before he briefly smothered it.

The others in the class held no such control.

"That is all well and good Eugene but perhaps something concerning the world?" Mrs. Nichols asked. "Ms. Stacy?"

she pointed to the blonde girl sitting near Liz Allen and Sally Avril.

"I chose the toxic spill by the Roxon corporation. Thousands of animals are now in danger because of their unsafe practices." Gwen Stacy said.

He was not sure how he felt about her, but that parker kid clearly would jump off of a bridge for her if she asked.

"That is a tragic event class and do you know why? The oil that spilled in the ocean will spread to the fish that we buy in the city and in turn will make people sick. If people were not aware of this countless more people could be hurt. People you might know personally." Mrs. Nichols said.

"Anybody else have anything to share?" Mrs. Nichols asked.

Parker raised his hand next.

"They say that they have found Captain America."

"Is he like a zombie or something?" Kong asked to anybody listening to him.

"No you moron. It is like a fossil. Frozen but still the same as when it went in." Flash said.

"How would you know? He could be like totally skin and bone like the dinosaurs." Kong argued back.

"Class let us get back on track." Mrs. Nichols said.

This was so boring. He wished that he could have been in the duplicate's place right now. Anything would be better than this.

"Congratulations on your promotion." Danny said as he looked at Nick Fury.

They were currently on the Triskelion. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s boomerang-shaped base a few miles off of New York. It held a giant metal tower with soldiers and spies walking about.

"Is there a problem kid?" Fury asked him.

"Besides how you used me to get yourself a promotion." Danny said as he took a glance around the room.

While he had been dealing with the weapon x facility in Finland Fury had agents striking at other bases accomplishing tasks he could not know about. All he knew was that in the end Fury's old boss was gone and now he was the man in charge.

"Do not worry about it. Now let's talk about your mission." Fury said as he opened the file even though Danny was more than sure he had read the file the moment that he had gotten it.

"Hawkeye says you accomplished the goal and did it with few to no casualties." Fury said as he looked over the report. 'I am glad that I had decided to recruit the kid. His versatile powers made him useful in many situations and he could calm and rational decisions when the situation called for it.'

"I also saved the X-men." Danny said to make sure that it was not forgotten.

"That is mentioned as well." Fury said turning the page. 'The mutants are a rather complicated issue. I could tell the world the truth about them but that was more than likely to cause a war between mutants and humanity. The truth would just be the spark needed to light the flames of hatred. The Phantom's growing relationship with the X-men could be useful to improve relationships between Humans and Mutants. The Savage Land being run by Magneto's children, are a major concern that we are eventually going to need to deal with.'

"So, am I an agent now?" Danny asked as he turned back to the man in the chair with an eyepatch.

"No." Fury said.

"What?" Danny asked like he could not believe what the man said.

If this was a videogame, he would have gotten so many achievements for what he did. There was no way he should have failed this test.

"I did not recruit you so that you could become a spy. I recruited you because I am building a team." Fury said.

"What kind of team?" Danny asked wondering what Clockwork was getting the original involved with.

"A team of heroes with gifts like yours but different. I call it the Ultimate Initiative." Fury said as he closed the folder.

"When do I meet these people?" Danny asked.

"Some of them are already here." Fury said.

"Some?" Danny asked.

"Yes. I am still trying to convince a few other people who I think would be a good fit." Fury said as he got up and started walking to the door.

Knowing a silent signal when he got one Danny followed suit to meet these other heroes.

"How is that Brett guy doing? I heard that he got shot while we were in Finland." Danny asked.

"He is healing. This is not the first time Brett has gotten shot. If I did not know better, I would think that was his mutant power." Fury said causing him to wince wondering just how many times that man had gotten shot.

"Hey Fury who is the kid?" An old man with a goatee and a suit asked as he held a drink in his hand as they entered what could only be a lounge.

"Stark this is Danny codenamed The Phantom another member of the team." Fury said as the two other people in the room turned towards them.

"Isn't he kind of young?" The woman of the group asked.

"He may look young, but he has the skills needed to be on the team. " Fury said.

"So, who are you people?" Danny asked annoyed that they were talking about him when he was in the room.

"I am Antonio Stark. People call me Iron Man." The man with the glass said as he raised it to take a drink.

He had heard of Iron Man when he was doing research into the heroes of this world, but he also had information on Antonio Stark that was given to him from his backstory. Antonio Stark was the C.E.O. of Stark Industries. While he was a genius inventor and businessman Stark was also known for being a womanizer and a drunk. Always some story on the news about how his actions as Iron Man were leading Stark Industries' stock down. It was the type of news that put Vlad in a good mood as Stark Industries were a competitor of DALV Technologies.

"I am Janet Van Dyne codename The Wasp and this is my husband Hank Pym codename Giant-Man." The woman said as they walked over.

"What can you do?" Hank asked him with a curious tone.

"My favorite powers aren't really indoor friendly but here is a little taste." Danny said as he used an ecto-blast to singe the dart board near the back. "So, what can you guys do?"

"I can shrink and fire energy blasts." Janet said.

"I can grow into a giant." Hank said and he had to admit that sounded cool.

"How big?" Danny asked.

"Sixty feet." Hank said with a grin on his face.

"So, is this everybody Fury?" Stark asked.

"He said that there are more people they just have not agreed yet." Danny said.

"Really? Who?" Janet asked.

"I am trying to get Thor to join but he is resistant to the idea." Fury said.

"Thor? The guy who believes he is a Norse God?" Stark asked like he could not believe it.

"He might be. I am a ghost. Stranger things have happened." Danny said.

"Ghosts are not real." Stark denied as he looked him over.

"I could overshadow you and show you how real we are." Danny said with a smile and glowing green eyes.

"Overshadow?" Hank asked.

"What you call possession." Danny explained.

"Sounds cool." Janet said.

"I doubt such a thing is possible." Stark said but before he could show him how real it was a guy came running into the room.

Danny could see that the other people in the room had a worried look on their faces.

"Fury, I need to talk to you." The guy said.

"What is it Dr. Banner?" Fury asked.

"He's waking up." Dr. Banner said like that was supposed to explain anything.

"We need to go." Fury said turning and running through the door.

"Do you guys have any idea what that was supposed to be about?" Danny asked the people that would be his team.

"I have some idea. Let's go see if I am right." Stark said.

"So that is Captain America?" Stark asked as they looked below through the glass to the medical room where Dr. Banner was working on the first super soldier.

"Can you believe it we are going to be working with the actual Captain America." Janet said clearly excited over the face.

"You seem really excited." Danny said as he floated in the air cross-legged.

"How could you not be excited? This is Steve Rogers, Captain America, and the first Super-soldier." Hank Pym said making it seem the man was a group of people.

Probably because he was not from this universe in the first place. It seemed like everyone in this place was buzzing with excitement. Like this was some sign from heaven and not just a major coincidence.

"I don't know. Maybe I am just weird." Danny said looking at the man being questioned and studied. "What can you guys tell me about the doctor working on him?

"That is a complicated story kid." Hank Pym said.

"I have all the time in the world." Danny said.

"It was two decades ago. There were a group of scientists that were trying to see if we could replicate the Super Soldier serum that was used on Captain America down there. Banner and I were members of the team. One of the guidelines were that we could not do tests on human beings. Banner just decided one day not to listen to our orders and injected himself with the serum we had been working on." Hank Pym said.

"It did not work I take it?" Danny asked as he looked at what was certainly a mad scientist.

"No, it did not." Stark said.

"He turned himself into a monster." Janet said.

"How bad was it?" Danny asked.

"Very bad. Now as a result of Banner's decision whenever he gets mad, he turns into the monster again." Stark said making him understand why they were so worried when the man came running in.

If all it took was a little stimulus for the man to turn from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde than the man should treated like a ticking timebomb.

"Do you think Fury wants him on the team?" Danny asked.

"Not if he has any sense in that bald head of his." Stark said.

Looks like the original was in for a hell of a time.

"We need to talk." Danny said as he came to sit at the same lunch table as Parker.

"About what?" Parker asked looking around wondering what was going on.

"About why you were thrown off of an eleven-story building wearing some sort of costume." Danny said.

"What are you talking about?" Parker asked as he looked around clearly wondering if he could get out of this conversation.

"I saved you from going splat on the sidewalk. I think that deserved some form of gratitude. All I want from you is answers." Danny said his eyes glowing green to Peter's shock.

"Fine but not here." Parker said but before he could say anything else other people joined them at the table. Gwen, Mary Jane, and Liz Allen.

"Hello." Danny said to the group.

"What's going on?" Liz Allen asked as she took a seat.

"Nothing I was just telling Peter here how I found out that I lived right across the street from him." Danny said.

He watched as Peter's eyes widened at the fact because clearly, he had not known that.

"Really? I live right next door to Peter, and I haven't seen you?" Mary Jane said.

"I did not know that. I can't believe I missed seeing such a pretty girl living so close." Danny said with a smile at her and watched her blush and try to hide her face behind her hair.

"So where did you live before you came here?" Liz asked him.

"Wisconsin. Totally boring place. Nothing happened there." Danny said as he turned to look at her.

"Can I see talk to you for a minute outside." Parker said irritation clear in his eyes.

"Sure. Let's head outside." Danny said gesturing at the field beyond the windows.

"What do you think you are doing?" Parker asked him.

"Talking, making friends, you know regular school stuff." Danny said.

"We have been classmates for a month, and you have not said more than a few sentences to me before today." Parker said.

"What can I say? I'm shy." Danny said.

"Yet not too shy to try and threaten me." Parker said.

"No. I just want to talk with you. I think you have superpowers and are starting out as a superhero and got a bit over your head." Danny said as he started lighting up his fingers to show Parker their glow. "Am I close?"

"Yes." Parker admitted reluctantly.

"I could help you with what you are trying to do." Danny said.

"Why?" Parker asked clearly suspicious.

"Because If I leave you alone to try whatever you were doing earlier again you could end up dead. " Danny said.

If he was sent here to be a hero and help people, then this was just another person that clearly needed his help. The original had Sam and Tucker to help him out in the beginning. From what he could see Peter had no support.

"So what rich person were you going after?" Danny asked because whoever owned that building had to be involved in something shady.

From both his personal experience and the comic books that he had read rich people were the most likely to be criminals and or supervillains.

"I was looking into Wilson Fisk." Parker said.

He had heard of that guy but from where?

"Let's save this conversation for later. It looks like your friends are getting curious." Danny said as he saw the others staring at them probably trying to see if they were going to start throwing punches.

"Hey Aunt May." Peter said as he led him inside his house.

"Hello Mrs. Parker." Danny said as he waved at the old woman that watched over Peter.

"Hello. Who are you?" Mrs. Parker asked him.

"I am Daniel Masters. I recently joined Peter's class and Peter invited me to hang out after school." Danny said with a smile.

"What do you boys plan on doing?" Mrs. Parker asked.

"The usual stuff head to the mall. Play some games at the arcade. Peter just came here to make sure he left his school stuff at home and not lose it." Danny said.

"He has been losing his bag a lot recently." Mrs. Parker said as she put her hand to her chin.

"I don't lose them that often Aunt May." Peter said.

"This is your fifth one this month. I worry you would lose your head if it was not attached." Mrs. Parker said.

"Do you need any money, Peter?" Mrs. Parker asked her nephew.

"No. I have enough Aunt May." Peter said as he led him to his room.

"I think that worked out rather well." Danny said.

"Yeah, but I hate lying to Aunt May." Peter said as he opened his bag and took his school stuff out.

"You could stop going out in a costume then." Danny said as he reminded the teen that what he was doing was a choice.

"I can't." Peter said shaking his head.

"What do you mean?" Danny asked.

"My Uncle told me that "With great power comes great responsibility." and with the amount of power that I have it means if people need help, then I have to help them." Peter said looking determined.

"That motto sounds more like a curse." Danny muttered to himself.

"It is what I believe in." Peter said making him wince.

He had not meant for him to hear that.

"Very well. Do you mind telling me what you were doing that night that caused Wilson Fisk tossed you out of a window?" Danny asked.

"It all started when I caught a pair of criminals trying to rob an electronic store. I had trapped them in my webs when they started talking about this boss of theirs." Peter said.

"Wilson Fisk." Danny said getting the idea.

"They made it seem like he was this bigshot gangster that was going to take over the city. After the cops took them away I decided to investigate." Peter said.

"What did you manage to find out?" Danny asked.

"Besides his current support to the upcoming mayor election all I could find was that he is a wealthy businessman with numerous donations to charities and art galleries." Peter said.

"That sounds incredibly suspicious." Danny said thinking back to Vlad.

"Why does it sound suspicious? I know he has ties to crime but what have I told you that makes him seem suspicious to you?" Peter asked.

"Peter one of the most favored tactics of rich criminals is to donate money for charity and hosts parties to celebrate art. It allows them to show off and drag everyone's attention away from the shady actions they are more than likely taking." Danny said certain with his distrust of the wealthy.

"Anyway, I had nothing except the word of two criminals. I had to get more information. I put my costume on to see if I could find any evidence." Peter said.

"I am guessing that you found something, and it did not end well?" Danny asked.

"He has someone with powers on his payroll." Peter said rubbing his shoulder clearly thinking about something else.

"What kind of powers?" Danny asked.

"This guy could throw electricity." Peter said.

"So, his henchmen knocked you out and stole your mask?" Danny asked given that when the duplicate had saved Peter, he had been without the mask that the newspapers showed him having.

"Yeah. I am really worried over what he is going to do with it. The only good thing about that screwup was that he had no idea who I am." Peter said.

"If we are going to do this, we need to find some leads to start with." Danny said.

"Where would we even start?" Peter asked.

"I know this bar criminals go to. Let's see if we can go and shake us up a lead." Danny said as he slammed his fist into his palm.

"Let's go." Peter said as he put his costume along with a new mask in his bag.
