Chapter 09: Double Life

"Why do you look so depressed?" Danny asked as he turned to look at Peter who was sitting in silence pretending to read a book.
Pretending because Peter was holding the book upside down. Peter had been like this all day, and he was finally curious enough to ask. Lunch was coming up soon and he did not want this guy's bad mood ruining his appetite. He had never gotten to eat before and wanted to enjoy his first and maybe only time trying it.
"The universe is against me." Peter said as he dropped the book and slammed his head lightly into the table.
"What do you mean?" Danny asked as he had seemed so happy when he and his Aunt May went to drop Gwen off at home. "Did Gwen tell you that she did not like you?"
Speaking of which where was Gwen? he had not seen her today in class.
"No, I did not get to tell her." Peter said.
"What do you mean?" Danny asked.
"The moment that I was about to tell her Gwen's dad came outside and called for Gwen." Peter said. "I had waited ten minutes to for Gwen to come back outside but the moment that she had there was this sad look on her face, and she told me to leave."
"I thought Gwen's dad liked you?" Danny asked.
All he knew about John Stacy was that he was a captain of the NYPD.
"I thought so to." Peter said wondering what was going on. 'I knew it was something, but I had no clue what it was.'
"So that is what is causing your downwards spiral?" Danny asked.
"Maybe Gwen's dad had figured out that I am Spider-Man and does not want me dating his daughter." Peter said.
"You want to find out what is going on?" Danny asked.
Peter raised his head and gave him a hard look. "I do not want you to possess Gwen's dad so that you can read his memories. I am barely alright with doing it to criminals but doing it to a friend's dad is just wrong."
"I was not offering to overshadow him. I meant text Mary Jane." Danny said.
Mary Jane was Gwen best friend since Gwen had transferred to this school after being kicked out of her last one. Also, Peter really needed to learn to lower his voice. It was going to be hard to keep a secret identity if Peter did not learn to whisper.
"Do you think that is a good idea?" Peter asked.
"Do you want to take to Gwen in person and find out what is going on?" Danny asked.
You should do it. Though don't tell her that I am the reason you are asking." Peter said. 'Mary Jane would just tell me to talk to Gwen in person and I doubted that I could do that without screwing it up somehow.'
"I thought your whole thing was about responsibility. Now you want to put it on me?" Danny asked. "Well alright I am curious now. Give me your phone."
He held his hand out waiting.
"Why my phone?" Peter asked.
"I left mine at home." Danny said careful of anyone that could be listening around them.
Danny and The Phantom were never meant to be considered the same person even if they had the same face.
"Fine but tell Mary Jane that it is you texting her." Peter said handing Danny his phone.
Danny flipped the phone up and started texting Mary Jane. It did not take long for Mary Jane to send a response even though she was in a math class.
He frowned as he read her response.
"Well?" Peter asked.
"It is not about you." Danny said.
"What do you mean?" Peter asked.
"Seems Gwen's mom has run away." Danny said feeling bad for Gwen.
Vlad no matter the dimension was not a good parent and Spectra was just a load of issues no one needed but for a kid to find out that one of their parents had run out on them was just terrible. Especially with no goodbye just a note saying that she was unhappy and that she was leaving.
"That is terrible." Peter said.
"Yeah." Danny said as he looked at the doors of the library.
He may find Gwen a little bit annoying with her need to constantly find a soapbox and preach but that did not mean that he wanted her to be depressed.

Danny walked through the city cleaning up trash lying in the street with Telekinesis. It was rather good training as when he was absorbed back into the original it would have the memories of training with it. The people on the street were taking pictures and asking for autographs and since he had the time, he was letting them.
"Phantom what are you doing?" Nick Fury asked through the communicator the original lent him when he ordered him to go and clean the city.
"I am on Patrol making sure that the people are safe." Danny answered.
He was only spending a few hours in each borough to make sure that nothing dangerous was happening.
"We would contact you if something was up that needed your attention." Nick Fury said referring to the team cards that Fury had given them.
In case of an attack the cards would give a strong vibration like a cellphone so whether they were in their pocket or wallet/purse they would still be able to hear it.
"The others are busy on assignments so I wanted to make sure that people would still know that they are being protected." Danny said.
Tony was in Philadelphia dealing with this group that had been part of a government think-tank that had been changed by an experiment and now were developing powers, Hank and Janet were providing security for Justin Hammer Jr. as someone had was targeting him, and Captain America on an undercover assignment.
That just left him as the only Ultimate to protect New York.
Are you the original or a duplicate?" Nick fury asked.
"I am a duplicate." Danny said.
The original was hanging out with the non-Xmen students of Xavier's as Clockwork had told them today was the last warm day of December and they wanted to hang out before it started snowing.
"How strong are you?" Nick Fury asked.
Strong enough but if I am not, I can contact the original and he can come and deal with the issue." Danny said.
"Well let us hope you are right because it looks like someone is calling you out." Nick Fury said.
"What do you mean?" Danny asked.
"Seems like someone is attacking Staten Island." Nick Fury said.
"Lead the way." Danny said as he took off to the sky.

"Run for your lives!" The walking Rhino yelled as he tossed a car into the air.
It crashed into the others that he had thrown as if he is trying to form a tower.
"Scream for the Ultimates! Bring your so-called heroes here!" The talking hog said as he started blasting his energy pistols around the running and screaming humans.
"Who are you fools?" Danny asked as he floated down and glared at the two criminals in front of him.
He was curious as his ghost sense was not going off. If they were mutants, then their mutation was really cruel to make them so ugly. The Rhino man was wearing a green T-shirt and camouflage pants with golden armor and steel-toed boots while the pig man was wearing a purple and black jacket and pants set with a visor.
"Looks like we finally gained the attention of the Ultimates Rhino Strike." The hog said.
"The littlest one though Hog Stomper." Rhino Strike said as he looked over their opponent.
"I am going so going to make you regret saying that." Danny said as he blasted the talking Rhino with an ecto-blast.
It pushed him back into the tower of cars but there was no lasting damage done to the Rhino. Looks like his ecto-blast was not strong enough with the amount of power he had. The original probably would have more success but now was not the time to worry about what he was lacking there was still plenty he could do.
"That tickled." Rhino Strike said.
"Let's see how you like this." Hog Stomper said as it started firing energy blast at The Phantom.
Danny flew higher in the sky to avoid the blasts that were fired from the Pig's pistols.
"Why are you doing this?" Danny asked as he fired an ecto-blast at the Pig that sent it stumbling as it tried to avoid the blast.
"You have no need to know." Rhino Strike said as he tossed a car at him.
"All you need to know is that we are here to take down the biggest group in New York." Hog Stomper said before tossing a grenade into the sky.
Danny flew to the ground to avoid whatever device that might be.
"I will smoosh you like banana." Rhino Strike said as he charged at him.
That white horn looked to promise immense pain for those it stabbed.
"I would like to see you try." Danny said as he flew at straight at the talking Rhino.
The moment they were to meet though Danny turned intangible and phased right through him sending the Rhino crashing into a car and getting his horn stuck in the interior.
"Now it's just me and you." Danny said looking at the Hog Stomper.
"You aren't stopping us. We are going to make it into the big leagues." Hog Stomper said as he fired his guns.
"You can think about your mistakes while you try to get out of this." Danny said evading as he opened his utility belt and activated the containment foam pill and tossed it at the hg man with telekinesis.
He then used another batch of containment foam to contain the rhino while he was disoriented and stuck to the car.
Being a superhero was a very taxing job. It was barely past ten o'clock in the morning and already he was dealing with weirdos.

"So, what have you got on the criminals that attacked the city today?" Fury asked him.
He had searched the memories of the duo that attacked him earlier.
"They were not mutants." Danny said that being his first statement as he did not want Fury to blame them.
He had heard people muttering in the streets about mutants trashing the city and he wanted to prevent such misunderstandings.
"So, they were genetically altered?" Fury asked as he took in the news. 'The kid seemed to have a soft spot for mutants. Whether it was because of that girl he is sweet on or because he felt sad for them. It may be a bit of both.'
"Right. Their memories seem to suggest that they were paid money to undergo a treatment that caused this transformation." Danny said with a frown.
Mad science seemed to be more common in this universe than his old one.
"Did they see any faces?" Fury asked thinking if there was a lead to this group causing problems. 'If the kid saw a face, he could have it compared to the list of criminals and scientists that S.H.I.E.L.D. kept an eye on.'
"No. They were wearing masks and the people experimented on before being released into the city were kept in a sterile white room." Danny said frustrated.
"We will look into the people they were before this happened to see if we can find a link between them." Fury said. 'Whether it was a bar they all frequented together or if they shared a church Fury was going to go look into it. This was just another example of why the Ultimates were needed.'
"You are going to tell Elizabeth Ross to give a statement that the criminals involved are not mutants, right?" Danny asked.
"I will get on it right away." Fury said watching as the kid nodded and got up to write his report of the incident.

"Like what do you think?" Kitty asked as she held up a pink shirt.
She was a mutant with the power to turn intangible and walk through solid objects. She had recently come to her powers.
"Ah think it is too pink." Rogue said as she sat next to him in a chair.
"All I have seen you wear is black or green. Your sense of taste in clothes is suspect." Kitty said. 'I know Rogue is not the type to try and stand out, but she needed in other colors in her closet.'
"Ah like what I wear." Rogue said defensively as she looked away.
"I like what you wear too." Danny said with a smile as he put Rogue's hand in his.
He was wearing a black hat to hide his white hair and prevent people from noticing that he was The Phantom as he was still patrolling the city. So far, he had stopped two rampaging monsters.
He would rather be at the arcade hanging out with the other guys than in a mall shopping for clothes, but Kitty and Rogue wanted to get to know each other and he wanted Rogue to have more friends. So that meant he had to be dragged along as well.
'His hand is so close.' Rogue thought to herself as she blushed. 'I want to feel his skin on mine. I am tempted to just pick a random set of clothes so that I could invite him inside a booth and have some fun with him. I doubt that he would say no.'
'She is so lucky.' Kitty though to herself looking at them. 'His white hair made me want to run her hands through it and his green eyes just made me feel funny every time he looked at me.
"If you like it Kitty you should get it." Danny said as he turned to his newest friend and potential love interest.
"I will." Kitty said as she left to try it on.
"She is going to drive me crazy." Rogue said.
"I do not think she is so bad." Danny said.
"That's because she likes you." Rogue said.
'It was so very obvious with the way that she constantly looked at him when she thought nobody was looking.'
"How do you feel about that?" Danny asked.
"Ah think it is going to be useful." Rogue said. 'I remembered what he said when they were making out but instead of her having no idea, she could be a more involved part.'
'I have no idea where her head is at but for some reason, I feel I am going to enjoy it.' Danny thought to himself. "What do you mean?"
"I have been having dreams lately." Rogue said blushing as she thought back on to her dream just before this morning.
"What kind of dreams?" Danny asked with wide eyes and trouble breathing.
He really did not know how he was supposed to seduce these girls when Rogue could make him tongue-tied so easily. He now understood why Clockwork gave him the information that he did. All he could do was go with the feeling and trust the knowledge that had been given to him.

"I guess I have to punish you when we get back to the institute. I am a hero. I have to handle such intentions." Danny said as he moved his hand around the curve between Rogue's back and her ass.
"I was rather thinking that we could head to your place." Rogue said causing his eyes to widen.
"I am more than fine with that." Danny said. 'Get the house ready for Rogue and I when we get back.' He thought to his duplicates stressing how important this was.
"Great. Now let's get back to shopping." Rogue said as she pulled away from him and stood up.
That was just mean.
"Hey Danny, I found something that I think you would like." Kitty said as she reappeared before them with a blue and black long-sleeved shirt.
"I thought you two were doing shopping and I was just watching?" Danny asked.
"No way. I have no idea what other clothes you have and that is a reason as good as any to do some shopping for you." Kitty said.
Thankfully, before that could be started though a huge number of people started screaming.
"Sounds like people in need of help." Danny said as he raced from his chair to see what was going on.
"Let's go." Rogue said as she and Kitty followed behind him dropping their bags.
"You think the other guys heard this?" Danny asked as he grabbed the girls' arms and floated them from the third floor to the first.
Looking around he could see that there was a large number of people forming a group. He wondered what the name of this gang was and why they were here.
"There they are." Kitty said as she pointed, and Danny saw them coming out of a music store.
"Great now let's group up." Danny said as he flew up to the guys on the second floor.
"What are you guys doing up here?" Bobby asked. "People are in danger down there and probably needed help."
"We have no idea what is going on down there and we need to come up with a plan quick. Berserker, Spyke what are your powers?" Danny asked as those two were the only members that he did not know.
"I create and manipulate electricity." Ray said his eyes glowing.
"I can create spikes out of my body." Evan said with wooden spikes growing out of his arm.
Probably why he did not wear shirts with sleeves.
"Alright that is very useful." Danny said taking in the information. "I have a plan."
He did not get to finish his plan though as Bobby decided to interrupt him and pull a renegade decision. He turned the escalator into an ice slide and went to the first floor Clearly patience was not one of his strong suits.
"He is such a pain." Rogue said as she slapped her head in frustration.
"It is time for all you criminals to freeze." Bobby said as he pushed past through the gang members that were blocking the way through the mall passageway. 'I am a member of the X-men. I have fought Sentinels, helped defeat Magneto and have survived all those jerks from the Weapon X program. These criminals would go down just like all the rest. Danny was just overthinking things.'
"Such a brave boy. You will make a very useful slave." A voice said and the next thing Bobby knew was that he was hit with a whip and sent onto his back.
Danny looked to the woman holding the whip. She is a tall blonde with pink eyes and a heart-shaped mark on her forehead. She was wearing a very revealing black outfit that looked to belong to a bondage club.
He had to admit that she looked better than the rhino and warthog his duplicate dealt with earlier.
"I live to serve you mistress." Bobby said as he kneeled before the supervillain.
"I know. Now find me whatever jewels and valuable objects reside in this mall. Freeze anyone that gets in your way." Black Rose.
"Great. Now Bobby has been turned against us." Danny said.
He really hoped that the effect was temporary. Charles Xavier already did not like him. Being around in this situation would do him no favors.
"At least we know what she can do." Ray said while not taking his eyes off of the woman going on a rampage.
"You better focus or you are going to end up like him." Kitty said.
"Alright Rogue you and Shadowcat are going to help all the people not under her power escape the mall, Spyke you are going to produce spikes so that we can force a perimeter around the criminals, Berserker you are to be dealing with Iceman and the other hypnotized people. " Danny said.
"On my own?" Berserker asked.
"No I am going to make a duplicate to help you." Danny said creating one at about twenty percent power. "Let's go."
She wondered how useful her new slave could be. He was the first mutant that she had run in to.
they split up to take care of each of their roles.
"Here." Evan said as he produced a pile of spikes that he turned partway intangible and stabbed them into the ground with telekinesis.
A duplicate was doing the same on the other side.
"Good. Now make sure nobody escapes from this side." Danny said as he flew in front of the woman that was living out the fantasy of a BDSM fanatic.
"You are such a handsome boy. I am going to love having you as a slave." Black Rose said looking over the boy in front of her.
"Maybe in your dreams." Danny said as he fired an ecto-blast at her only for her to raise up a small wall made up of her vines.

Danny turned intangible letting the vines pass through him and flew into the woman that was manipulating them. He sorted through her memories to figure out how he could make her powers work and why she was here. Through this he learned that Black Rose was not a mutant. Her actual name was Annabeth Jackson and she had a day job as a middle school teacher. The only thing she remembered before starting this rampage was that someone was driving her in a truck and telling her to attract as much attention as she could.
Definitely something to look into later.
"Stop all of you." Danny said as he used her power causing the men and women taken over by Black Rose to freeze and wait for their next order.

Danny sat on the Rogue's bed as she placed her clothes away. After explaining what happened to the police, they had gone back to the Xavier school cutting their plans short. The Xavier students still had two hours until their curfew but after what happened the guys just wanted to head back. After learning what happened Charles Xavier had stated that even though most of them were not official X-Men they had done the team proud.
Personally, he felt that the man was hiding what he was really feeling given that he had brought the group into helping and did not want to been seen criticizing them while a stranger was around. He would start looking into the relationship between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the X-Men because he felt they should get along better given that he had saved their lives.
"Are you listening?" Rogue asked gaining his attention causing him to turn towards Rogue who was leaning against her closet.
"Sorry focused on what happened earlier. What was your question?" Danny asked.
"I was asking you about Black Rose. What did you think about her." Rogue asked.
"I think she went wild because she held her desires in to long. I was in her head so I should know." Danny said.
Annabeth was not the most honest of people. She repressed a lot of her desires because she was nervous and afraid of what would happen if she went wild.
"So, your advice is to follow your desires?" Rogue questioned him.
"That is right and right now I am feeling a pretty strong desire for you." Danny said as he walked up to Rogue and embraced her in a hug.
The next moment they were standing in his living room.
"How are we here?" Rogue asked looking around.
"New power of mine. I can teleport to anyplace I have been before." Danny said.
He was not strong enough to teleport to the ghost zone but anywhere in the city state was easy enough. His travel was limited by his power, and he did not want to be exhausted for what was coming next.
"I like the roses." Rogue said looking at the black and green roses that decorated those stairs and led up to his room.
"I thought you would." Danny said as he put his hands on both sides of Rogue's face and gave her a kiss that caused her to lean into him as if she were afraid that he would leave.
Nothing short of the end of the world could cause that to happen.

"How is it going?" The observer Ganthet asked appearing in his lair.
"The enemy is staring to make his move." Clockwork stated as he revealed the villains that had attacked Danny earlier in the day.
"Will the boy be ready for this?" Ganthet asked.
"All we can do is build the path as best as we can." Clockwork said.
