Chapter 62: Owned Man
/
This part is a bit on the abuse kick and, so shove sharp sticks in your ears and turn it up!
/
Dick landed a hit and didn't try to run. He was too focused on getting Slade to see what a mistake making him 'worthy' really was. Slade just moved, one eye on him as if….if he was only blocking. Was he hurt??
Good, he needed to feel this, this was his mistake. Dick wasn't. Renegade, was.
"You're always going to end up betrayed by someone…too bad. I was still hoping to "stab" you in the back for what you did to my friends!"
Slade fell, Dick's weapon stolen from Slade's ingenuity; he'd gotten it sharp enough to snip an artery. He co –
"What would the bat, say…" The man looked at him, pinned on the ground to his back as the sirens grew closer. "What about being a hero, as a son…. you, have a responsibility…...Dick –
" Don't." Slade moved his chin as Richard let the sharp object scrape his beard. "I should do what you did to her, make the rest of my time easier…but, it's not." Dick's arm shook, his other moving to grip the man and keep him there. His power was stronger. Slade was an outdated relic. Just like Rouge. Out of their prime.
"We, were almost perfect –
"Wasn't good enough!" Dick shouted. "I never was supposed to be here! You trapped me!"
"You, can stop anytime."
Dick's eyes led themselves to scan the air, the world he'd been born into.
Paris. Burning. Because of him. "I…. can't."
"I know, Rene –
"I'm not him!" He raised the stake, a fresh heart inches from its kiss of death. Fingers knuckle – white, the choice…he… -
"Would……Robin, kill…"
Dick's mind broke free as he fell back, the blade grabbed from his arm by the Slade – bots the man had maybe not told the boy about, the fact that others had seen him at this rate…
"I…. I didn't kill her –
"You made it easier." Slade sat up and dusted off his knees. "Give up, boy. You can't fight it."
"NO…." Dick wrenched the blade back as the swiftest of fingers snapped themselves. The collar came to life as Dick fell back into the bot's chest. "You didn't kill me, but we still have work to do to make you see it. That potential is there, you harmed the Brain." The man was, smiling…. Dick shook his head. "He…no…no…I –
"You did hurt something, not a blood and bone figure, but close." The man motioned to the bots; Dick's voice gone as the collar choked.
" Robin!!"
Starfire was there, her powers somewhat in trouble as a bot –
"NO!" Screaming as the next shock had him lifeless in the merc's grip, Kori was not one to wait. She dove at a bot as it threw a smoke screen ball into the air, Slade slinging the boy wonder over his shoulder as the second bot got them away from the girl in the midst of her own inner battle.
When the smoke had cleared, Raven had moved in with Joey to catch the bot –
Only to find it gone, and the sirens finally wailed in wait. Paramedics after the suffering, but still.
Too late.

Lex had saved his alone time back for a few last-minute emails and some down time, yet a call broke the silence rather quickly.
~ Luthor. ~
The tycoon clicked his tongue. "Wilson. What a shocker, how did the mini resort –
~ Your plan was a success, in a way. ~ Slade interrupted. ~ I have connections globally, or have you forgotten. ~
"The…. explosion?"
~ Set up by my people. ~ Smiled the merc. ~ My apprentice believed it all his fault, and the Brain has been given no mercy by his party. I hear his spot is up for grabs. ~
"How, by chance did you hear?"
~ Don't play dumb, Lex. ~ Slade huffed. ~ Am I in or not. ~
"That all depends." Chuckled the tycoon. "What can you bring to the table. Besides more details on Superman and his background…"
~ Easy, the bat. Every little snippet you can feast your eyes on. And, the Titans' allies. The Justice League. ~
"You don't seem too discouraged about sharing." Frowned Luthor as the suv pulled into the next lane. "I had unfortunate run in with Mr. Queen –
~ Green Arrow. He leaves back to Star in the morning. If you want a good crew to sabotage his hotel, I can think of no better reason than here to make your best bet. ~
"You don't gamble."
~ Because. ~ The man smirked. ~ It isn't a thrill if you know you are going to win. What's the sport in that. I prefer a challenge, not a game. ~
"Understood, for a hunter." Sighed the other male. "Should I expect you in the office…"
~ In Brussels for a bit, won't mean to lose the time by travel but….my apprentice is in need of a few days to get his act together. You saw the clip. ~
"It was horrid." Lex licked his lips at the thought of Superman's angst. "You'll let me know if Grayson is up for making another stop. The Light would like to, analyze your successor."
~ Soon, which is why I won't rush this trip. ~ Slade replied.
"I take it, about a week to get your check and weapons."
~ I have plenty of money, Lex. ~ Slade shook his head. ~ Weapons, of a sort. And allies in high places. ~

Tim was angrier at the fact that Bruce had told him to stay and not budge. He was stuck on patrol inside the cave, had his connections not been so very persuasive. ~ Tim? ~ She was in her uniform with a cut above her eye as he tried to scan for her location. "Tara! Where are you?? We –
~ I got hit; I didn't tell anyone. Been hiding…. Brother …..zzp…….blood….zzzp…..~
"Blood?? He's – Tim grasped at his hair and took to his key words. "Sebastian Blood, why? What is he doing in Berlin? And what are you?"
~ Lost….zzzp…..looking……zzp….Grant….~
"Terra! Come in! T!!!" He smashed a hand to the keys, going over a formula in his head on how, on what…
Grant, the HIVE…..a connection….
He swung over to a clip on the internet of Renegade stopping a gorilla with his bare hands. A brain…..A…
He swapped to the database, the whirring of the Bat Mobile not far as Bruce had returned to chide him to death. "Tim."
Here it came….
He kept typing, pulling up the Light and so many blank spaces. "Brother Blood; A.k.a; headmaster of Hive Academy."
"Tim!"
Drake didn't stop until Bruce gripped his working hand. "That's enough."
"Bruce! It's not. Terra! –
"What. What about –
Tim got back to his keys as a bewildered bat saw the link replay as an audio file of her talking.
~ I got hit; I didn't tell anyone. Been hiding…. Brother …..zzp…….blood….zzzp…..~
"What is this. Timothy."
"Wait, B. There's more."
~ Sebastian Blood, why? What is he doing in Berlin? And what are you? ~
~ Lost…. zzzp…. looking……zzp…. Grant…. ~
~ Terra! Come in! T!!! ~
"She found Grant, and Brother Blood…was there. In wherever she was, where they took her was prisoner. Remember?? The Brotherhood? And they were a part possibly of the Light!"
Tim popped a key as a tree diagram of possible members ha Bruce's mask off for him to view it.
"Without the Brain, who's going to hold that post."
"Dunno." Tim crossed his arms and wondered if Grant was really saved or was he a mole, someone they had to fix once the found him. Terra was golden. She'd stopped them. She'd done a hero's sacrifice.
"Whatever that position is, it's big."
"I know a few good candidates who could be vying for the space." Bruce moved his finger. "Blood was already in, so that leaves…"
"The only other mastermind not from a city they –
"Jump, and Slade matches."
Tim's mouth gaped open. "What do we do now?"
"We go after the source of this information." Bruce said. "And I'll need a partner, who can scale a high rise to do it."
/
Grod, Brain, Lex, Ra's, why Slade?
"You think he's the errand boy?" Clark flew as Brue stayed lower. He had to see the man's computer. Lex was their informant. This was the one person Slade could sort of…negotiate with. "I don't know for sure. Lex could be keeping an eye on any members not determined to take his spot at the podium."
"Lex?"
"I said it before; Slade really wants this Legacy of his to be seen by his enemies eventually."
"Richard was the first strike…. ah, sorry."
"I can handle it."
"Can you, Batman?" Clark stood in the man's way before he could leap on ahead. "I think you'd do worse to Lex than I would under Darkseid's control."
"I don't thrive off of chaos."
"No, you dwell on it." The wise alien said. "Dick is my nephew practically. We made sure he was ok with starting the Titans."
"I should have been clearer back then."
"Nothing we can't fix." Clark held out a hand as Bruce turned to the side. His despair showing on his sleeve. "It's never so easy…. He could be changed; made to like what he can't fix. What we…. if I ever get Wilson back. He'll be rotting for life. Let's stop this." Bruce swung off; the alien afraid to think that Bruce was done moping around. What he wouldn't do to a mortal man to get his sons back.

Terra ran out of minutes and charging his device was impossible while Grant was still unable to remember his name. "How do I tell my team that Blood messed with your mind?" She frowned. "Come on. I know –
He gripped her arm and shook his head, pointing to a subway station up ahead. "I know a destination."
/
The place was not bad. A more suburban feel as the span of streets didn't bug her. She walked in muddied boots with Grant being held hand in hand like... she let go, just thinking of him being a sick patient. Not her BB.
The location, was a home.
She saw the doorbell and paused. "Fran!"
Terra shushed the idiot as the person who came to the door, wasn't bald for once. She was a senior woman who was wiser than to be first perceived. "Huh, did your mission go south, oh!" She put a hand to her face. "That you, boy? What's that? You…. come in! Hurry it up."
She didn't give them a second as Terra was dragged in with her mini companion. The home was old fashioned and to her shock….it didn't mind the artillery.
Guns in cases, and not just any by the make or model. "We…can't st –
"Fran." Grant dopily grinned. "How ya been."
"Why are you littered in cuts? Is he drunk?"
"It's…. a long, story." Terra hung her head to reply. "We're running from his…enemies. That you might know. And we aren't friends anymore of Slade. Were his apprentices." She felt her tongue grow acid as she said it. "But, not anymore."
"Well, no wonder." Fran got up to pace towards the kitchen. "That man couldn't leash a dog to heel. He's useless with people, yet can you blame him…"
Terra wanted to roll her eyes. "So, were you old partners or something?"
"Army, not the kind of unit that didn't pull a few punches now and again. Strudel?" Fran offered. "I made some fresh this afternoon."
/
"Why did he take you here?"
"Guess is as good as mine." Terra shrugged and took her coffee black with a fruit strudel pastry. The melt in your mouth taste brought her back…
"This is…so good…Slade doesn't deserve you." She smiled with her cheeks quite full. "Dad hates sweets." Grant dove into his second piece until his hand was smacked. "No more. You'll ruin your diet. I cannot guess it... but you do know who I am, where you are. I've seen this. He's acting odd. "Fran moved to check on the boy's vitals. "Tampering, but I'm not a neurologist."
"You don't have to be, this has the HIVE written all over it."
Fran stopped drinking from her coffee mug. "Sorry, did you say…."
"I, is this bad –
A knock came from the doorway as Fran nearly spilled her coffee onto the floor. "This time of day???" She shushed the two, pointing to the fire escape out by her room. "You have to leave. There is another danger present."
"Sla –
"Duh." Grant rolled his eyes to make up for Terra's lackk of apathy.
"Right, so do find your way and bring some of my pastry to keep to the station. There is money –
The buzzer kept going as Fran stomped her foot. "You old goat! Wait just a minute!" She returned to the jar she kept her savings in. "That is too gebeerous, we can't take –
"If he finds you both, we won't be having brunch in the future…you are so young, his temper, not a trouble to me but you?"
The buzzer was becoming a signal to gun it. "Okay, alright!! Damn, just…take this and have yourselves safe."
"If…if you see a boy with him? Dark hair, white streaks. Blue eyes?" Terra gulped. "He's not his apprentice. He needs our help, so…. don't let him know."
"I'm an agent of order, not chaos." Scoffed the woman." Taking a soldier's secret to their grave is what I do best."
/
The door was swung back as Slade stood there, his frame a wreck as much as Terra's had been. "May I come in, Fran." Just as she saw it, the boy was held limp in his arms.
"Slade…who is he –
"In danger." Slade moved by her as she allowed it, checking to see if there was anyone else before shutting the door tightly.
/
"The Brotherhood?? Why?"
"They hurt him, tried to hurt me far worse. It was to recreate a super – soldier army from his sample."
"That boy was…. was Grant not enough??"
"He wasn't worth the headache –
SWAT .
Slade looked back dazed as the smack to his bare cheek was…very much a reminder of brainless he could be with his words. "Your son looked up to you. I know you don't mean half of that. As for your appetite, my kitchen is closed so make your reservations and get cozy." The woman rolled her sleeves up and went to prepare supper. "If you need me, I'll be knee deep in pasta dough."
/
Slade sat on the spare bed as Dick was laid out onto it. The man had found spare cloths yet could he keep the boy safe? He was still not able to impress the Light at this rate. "You almost had it…. why…" Slade gripped his skull. Maybe the shock was a bit much, but getting taken down by the press was not prime time for Slade Wilson. Nor, Deathstroke. "If only…" He huffed a sigh and got up, looking over his stunned masterpiece before shutting the door.
Like temporarily burying a corpse, it hurt to walk away for even a second.
Terra had not had the gall to leave, not until she saw Dick's state. Grant was all in for sneaking around as they found their time to swing over to the boy's window and slide the latch up. "He's…" She took a breath and made sure not to lose her footing. "Is he…"
"Looks like he's snoozing."
"No, he's unconscious. See?" She checked to find his pulse quite low. Almost regulated…
"Was...ok, this is messed up."
"You were like that, weren't we all?" Grant sniffed.
Terra shook her head, arm going out as Grant drove in something she had to protest with a blink. Wrestling the device from the other assassin, Terra knew Fran wasn't wrong. "You aren't one of us…. psycho!" She seethed.
"The headmaster would like to have what he has, such an admirable ability. I don't think you can know yet." The brainwashed Grant flew at her, the injector gun what she'd missed to check. It was to take blood. Not infect it.
"Blood has no idea who he's –
The doorknob jutted as Terra and Grant both froze. "Move!" She whispered.
The door opened as Slade returned, a mug of some broth there as Dick had begun to stir. "Stay, kid." He came to the teen's aide, Grant's fists ground as it tore at him. "S…Slade…."
"You're ok." Slade made sure to fabricate a lie. "Your first kill." He went on weaving. "I've very proud of you, my apprentice."
/
Grant slumped off, not knowing why as Terra followed. They had money enough to get a ticket to the next border. "I'm done with them…" Grant hugged his arms to his chest. "I'm done…I'm done!"
"Then don't try to be like him so much!" Terra grabbed the assassin round his middle as his laughter turned to tears. "I can't stop hating…. why?" He sobbed as she hugged him harder. "You want to love others, but…I know. I know that it hurts…Jason knew, that's why…he cared. He loves you, like all of us." She tried to sooth the beast in Grant's mind. "Blood…. tried to, still…"
"We'll stop him too." She hushed to the blathering teen. "I'm sorry, we'll find help…for the both of us…."
/
