Ember Sunblaze: Happy February! I can't believe this chapter is getting posted so soon after the last one! I think this is a record for myself! Well this is pretty much the second part of the boy's welcome before the girls join the class once again. I know, I'm taking forever with reuniting them! But I swear, that wasn't my intention. In my mind these last few chapters were SUPPOSED to by fairly short chapters. That is until I actually sat down to write them. Funny how much you add to an idea...
Well anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Chapter 22: The Debrief
"Meeting room, now!"
A chorus of unenthused confirmations followed this demand as they all shuffled from their seats, following their teacher out the door. Midoriya lingered, letting Iida and Todoroki go on ahead as he waited on the boys still seated. Ojiro's speech had struck a chord with them, most especially Kirishima who looked plain miserable. He sat motionless, grimly staring down at his plate. Kaminari, who sat next to him, gave him a small nudge."Come on, Dude. We have to go."
Kirishima swallowed and then nodded, as Kaminari led him out. Midoriya watched with a growing concern for his somber classmate. Next to him, Bakugo got up with a dark scowl, scornfully snapping. "What are you gawking at, Deku?! Move it!" He passed Midoriya, roughly knocking against his shoulder.
Midoriya said nothing, used to his sour mood. Tokoyami came last, walking past him broodily, no words of comfort coming forth. "I guess even Tokoyami has his limits." Midoriya soberly mused. He turned, watching as the serving ladies withdrew from hiding to nervously collect the dirty plates.
"Thank you again for the food. It was delicious." Midoriya quietly told them, giving a small bow of apology. "I'm really sorry about all the fuss earlier."
"No need to worry." The ladies waved him off with polite smiles. "No harm done."
Midoriya frowned, sensing their unease behind their courteous manners. He bowed again and quickly left, following in the rear of the group as they made their way down a wooden hall that led to a large conference room. Traditional tatami mats lined the floors, along with simple floor cushions for the class to kneel on. A white board had been set up along the back wall.
Midoriya, as well as the rest of the boys affected by Siren, waited in the doorway as the rest of the class settled onto cushions close to the front. Iida and Todoroki sat beside each other, both turning back to wait for him. They weren't the only ones. The rest of the class were also eying the group. Bakugo, always the first to react, shot the class a dirty look as he stomped over to the back row of cushions. There he stubbornly plopped down, away from the others.
Kirishima and Kaminari followed, looking very much like sad dogs with their tails between their legs as they timidly sat next to him. Tokoyami glided by, also setting himself in the back row. Midoriya hesitated, feeling his friends willing him to join them. "I should probably go down with Iida and Todoroki."
But Midoriya found himself unable to move forward, Ojiro's words ringing in his ears. The stares of his classmates suddenly took on a hostile air as if daring him to join them after what he had done. He took a hesitant step back, a shiver running through his spine. "No, knock it off Midoriya. It's all in your head!" But even so, he couldn't shake off the guilty weight that seemed to bear heavily down on him. With great reluctance, he gave in, quietly joining Tokoyami in the back. He kept his gaze downward, unable to meet Iida or Todoroki's questioning glances.
Aizawa Sensei watched the separation of his home-room class with grim resignation. "Guess something really did happen during lunch." He discerned, taking note of the gloom residing over the back of the make-shift classroom. It somewhat surprised him. "This class in particular seemed pretty tight knit." He mulled thoughtfully, "I wonder what…"
He paused, a memory from the beach resurfacing. He remembered watching how worked up the boys had been after he revealed their surprise mission to them. How annoyed he had been with them for being so on edge, completely ignoring the definition of what a stake out mission was. Then, his surprise on how they almost magically returned to normal after the girls had appeared. Midnight had understood, but only now, was Aizawa starting to fully grasp the picture.
"The girls are the glue that holds the class together. Putting them in danger, even knowing it wasn't intentional is too much for both sides of the class to deal with." Aizawa mused, "Of course. When it comes to girls, all rational thoughts get thrown out the window for teenage boys." It both amused him and infuriated him at the same time. "Well, I'm sure they'll work this out amongst themselves." He paused, rethinking that thought. "Either that or the girls will sort them out."
"Okay, listen up." Aizawa began, the students all falling silent. "As you all know, today we had a special mission assigned to us. To…." He was interrupted by the sliding of the door. Everyone turned, stunned to see Mineta, garbed in the same working yukatas as the attendants of the inn.
"Thank you for joining us, Mineta." Aizawa greeted him with an indifferent nod. "You can go ahead and have a seat." The small boy's head hung down miserably as he silently entered and sat down in a slump next to a baffled Midoriya.
"Mineta, where have you been?" Midoriya whispered.
"Yeah, and what's with your new wardrobe?" Kaminari also whispered, poking his head around Bakugo. But their friend merely shook his head, evading their questions.
Up front, Rikido Sato slowly raised his hand up. "Umm, Sensei, why is Mineta wearing a work yukata?"
"Mineta, has graciously offered to help the inn with various tasks for the rest of the school trip. Starting with washing dishes and collecting the trash from everyone's room after our class session is over with." Aizawa explained, eyeing Mineta sternly from across the room. The boy gave a tortured nod.
"Okay everyone, " He began again, bringing everyone's attention back to the front. "Now that you all are present, we'll be going over a post mission debrief on what occurred during the beach trip."
In the front row, Iida's hand shot straight up. "Pardon me sir! But wouldn't it be proper for us to put a hold on to the debrief until the girls are also present?" He formally inquired, " After all, they were present for most of the key events. Surely, they would have vital input to share?"
"The girls are still in the middle of their police interrogations. Because of their role during the mission, their individual interrogations will take quite some time." Aizawa explained. He held up a large file of paperwork. "Midnight has sent me copies of her own interviews with Yaoyorozu and Asui, so we have a fairly good understanding of what took place. The girls will be doing their own debriefs once discharged from the hospital."
Shoji raised one of his hands. "The girls will be discharged today, correct?"
Aizawa nodded. "Yes. Their injuries were bad, but luckily we had a team of doctors with an array of medical related quirks bought in. They should recover without much complications."
"Should?" Kirishima whispered, looking worried. The rest of class seemed to share his concern.
Aizawa ignored this. He calmly grabbed a marker, turning to face the white board. "If that's all, then let's begin…"
Midoriya found it hard to focus as Aizawa began the lecture, his mind reeling back to Oijiro's heated statements. He knew he wasn't the only one. Down the row, he could see the others all struggling in their own way. He watched Kacchan's fists shaking with fury as he kept shooting daggers in Ojiro's direction. Kirishima's head was lowered piteously, and Midoriya sensed the toughen warrior was holding back tears. Tokoyami was withdrawn, moodily staring at the empty white board. Even Kaminari, who had earlier seemed back to his normal positive self, now slouched in his seat miserably, his light extinguished. Midoriya sighed, wishing there was something he could say that could ease the wounds inflicted by Ojiro's harsh words. But nothing came to mind.
"Because he's right." Midoriya grimly admitted. "Even if everyone is okay now, it could have easily gone the opposite direction. And if that happened, then what? Would we even be able to be called heroes after that?" He felt his heart beating hard against his chest, as he once again remembered that moment. That rage, that urge to kill that had not yet been driven away from him by Uraraka's sacrifice. "If I had killed her, what would that mean? For me? For "One for All"?
Midoriya knew deep in his heart he would have to give up the mantle All Might had set for him. He could never be the hero he had always dreamt of being, one that others looked up to, the Symbol of Peace. Not if he had taken a life. "All Might would have to find someone else." The thought was dismal one, but not as upsetting as the thought of actually killing someone.
This line of thinking led Midoriya to ponder another dispiriting notion. The last time Midoriya had had his mind taken over by Shinso during the sports festival, he had been able to snap out of Shinso's control thanks to the support of the previous users of One For All. "So why…why didn't they come to my aid today?" He felt his hand shake slightly, a feeling of anger flaring within. "Why…didn't they stop me from hurting her?!"
He shook his head, trying to banish away these suffocating thoughts. "No, I need to focus! I can't think like that. Not when I don't even truly understand the circumstances surrounding their appearances." He knew from his meeting with Daigoro Banjo, the fifth user of One For All, that the successors would follow as Midoriya slowly regained use of their individual quirks. But when that would be remained a mystery.
Midoriya sighed, deciding to put all that aside as he concentrated on Aizawa Sensei, who had just started going over the nature of Siren's quirk.
"The quirk we're examining has two basic functions." Aizawa explained, "One, to use her voice to manipulate the hormones of the victim , in our case her main focus was on testosterone. Two, to use that influence to control the victim's minds. Similar to the pheromone chemical used by insects and other organisms." He drew a diagram of a beehive and a large bee with a crown on her head. "In nature, this is called the Queen Bee Effect."
"Wait? So, it's not mind control?" Sero queried, looking skeptical.
"Define your definition of 'mind control'." Aizawa countered, addressing the rest of the class to participate.
Midoriya leaned in, his interest perking despite his low spirits. Quirks and their functions were one of his favorite topics of interest, right below hero trivia and All Might facts. The class went silent, looking thoughtful, before Ojiro slowly raised his hand.
"I would say mind control is the process of someone or something altering your ability to think on your own, leaving you as a puppet." A few of the students nodded in agreement.
"By your definition, would you consider this situation a case of mind control?" Aizawa inquired. A few of the students glanced over their shoulders at Midoriya and the rest as if the answer would stare back at them. In return, they only received a vicious snarl from Bakugo.
"Probably not." Ojiro admitted, tail swishing uncomfortably.
Aizawa nodded, holding up a file of paper in his hands. "You would be correct. "Mind Control" is a very broad term, especially when it comes to the abilities of quirks. As you will see later, Siren's quirk left the victim's mind quite intact, enough for them to plan and operate individual battles without her being present. The ability for the victims to think on their feet, also worked in her favor for making sure none of the boy's victims were followed." He held up five tracking devices. "These were left behind in your clothes bins. Clearly on purpose."
"That's where those things went!" Kaminari exclaimed, "I was wondering where they went!"
Aizawa nodded. "This is also the reason why us teachers were late in discovering that anyone was missing."
Midoriya listened as he further explained to the class the steps Siren and Kai had used to lure away students and quickly drag them away. "So that's how it was done. It's all starting to make sense now. But something is still off…"
Raising his hand, Midoriya called out. "Sir, I have a question." Ignoring the heads turning his way, he determinedly asked. "I understand how myself and the rest of the class were lured in by Siren's quirk. But none of this explains how the girls got dragged into all this."
The class murmured agreement as they, too, turned to Aizawa Sensei for an explanation. The teacher frowned, arms crossing, as if debating how much to say. To everyone's surprise, the teacher pointed a finger towards the back of the room, directly at Mineta. "Perhaps you should ask your classmate there."
Midoriya whipped around, looking down in surprise at the petrified Mineta beside him. "Mineta? You know what happened?"
"Well….y–y–you…see…I…I" Mineta stuttered, looking ready to dash out the door as everyone's furious glares suddenly fell upon him. He gulped, quickly blurting out, "I can't remember! That'...that's right! Sorry I'm drawing a blank here!" He chuckled, nervous sweat soaking through his yukata.
"Allow me to remind you." The teacher coldly replied, causing the poor boy's body to freeze in terror. "Mineta.." Aizawa explained, addressing the class. ""Thought it would be funny to play a little prank on the girls. A prank that made them so furious that they chased him through the waters. When they caught him, the girls found themselves unintentionally pulled down into the waters along with Mineta." As he finished, he found no one was paying any attention to him. All hate-filled eyes were focused on one individual in the back row.
"Oh, boy…" Aizawa silently murmured, pulling out his phone. "Well it's not like we didn't expect this."
"Guys…please! Please! Don't be mad!" Mineta wailed, pathetic tears falling. "It was just a joke!"
"How could you!?" Iida demanded, pointing an accusing finger at Mineta. "Because of your imprudent behavior, our female comrades were put into severe danger! Surely you must atone for your crime!"
"So, it's because of you the girls were caught in the middle of this mess?!" Kirishima growled, threateningly cracking his knuckles.
"What kind of devious prank did you perform, Mineta?" Tokoyami demanded, with Dark Shadow hovering over his shoulder.
"You know, besides what you usually do!" Sero pointed out.
"Uhhh…well…I…can't say." Mineta faltered, stuck in an internal struggle between wanting to blab everything about his notorious deed to his peers and also wanting to keep it to his grave.
"Not a good answer." Todoroki threatened, small flames bursting from his palm.
Mineta shrieked, piteously clinging to Midoriya's shirt. "Please, Midoriya! Help me out here! How was I supposed to know all this would happen!? You're not mad at me, right?!"
But Midoriya was not buying it. "Mineta, you shouldn't have been pulling any pranks on the girls in the first place. What did you do that made them that mad at you?" He pressed, firmly glaring down at Mineta. The poor boy backed away, only to walk right smack into Kaminari.
The electric hero had never looked so furious. Before Mineta could react, Kaminari had grabbed a fistful of his yukata, pulling him close so he could tower over his trembling form. "What. Did. You. Do!?" he forcefully demanded, giving his former friend a threatening shake.
A cough cut into the boys' heated interrogation against Mineta. Aizawa calmly raised his hand, gesturing to his phone. "Sorry to interrupt, but before any acts of angry violence is performed I think this might be a good time for me to read this email to Mineta. It's from the girls."
At the mention of the girls, everyone froze, immediately interested. Kaminari unceremoniously dropped Mineta. "Please do." He answered coldly, both boys giving each other dirty looks. It was clear their friendship was on its last ropes.
Aizawa cleared his throat, reading the email aloud from his phone.
"Dear Mineta,
We hate you. We just wanted to make that clear. We also want to make it clear that you are to NEVER repeat the hideous act you performed against back in the ocean. If even a whisper of it escapes your lips and befalls the ears of any of our classmates, WE WILL FIND YOU and YOU WILL PAY! Remember this Mineta, we know where you go to class, we know where you eat your meals, and we know where you sleep each night. We also have the ability to completely ruin any chance of you EVERY hooking up with a girl at U.A. You. Have. Been. Warned!
Yaoyorozu is like stupid rich, so if you don't want her family lawyers tracking you and your entire family down, you better just be a good little boy.
Also, Hagakure says she wants you to buy her juice whenever she asks.
Also, also, Jiro wants you to buy her snacks too.
On second thought, as a united team, we all demand snacks and juice from you whenever we demand it. Yaoyorozu's lawyers will send over the contract to be signed and notified as soon as we return to school.
Again, NO BLABBING!
Signed,
I have acid and I'm not afraid to use it,
I hope you like floating in the Stratosphere,
I make blades for fun,
I can make your heart stop, and
You'll never see me coming"
Aizawa looked up from his reading. "That's it."
Despite his bored rendering of the letter's contents, the atmosphere in the room had shifted dramatically. The curt and dangerous tone of the letter had been felt by everyone, completely and utterly terrifying them. The rage that had threatened to boil over into a brawl had now shriveled into horrified curiosity.
"Dude…" Kaminari repeated, his tone changing from angry to just plain dumbstruck. "What DID you do!?"
But no answer came from Mineta, who instead of looking terrified, merely looked furious. He stood up, pointing an indignant finger at his teacher. "Aizawa Sensei! You have to do something about that letter! They are clearly not only sending me dangerous threats but also BLACKMAILING ME INTO INDENTURED SERVITUDE!"
Aizawa paused, considering the request. Then he turned, unconcerned, back to the white board. "Moving on."
"WHHHHAAAAATTTTT!?" Mineta wailed, throwing himself upon the floor. His peers merely shook their heads, unperturbed by his misery.
"You reap what you sow dude." Kaminari stated, moving back to his seat.
"Now does anyone have any further questions concerning Siren's quirk before we move on?" Aizawa asked, speaking over Mineta's wails.
Bakugo stood up. Midoriya, along with the rest of the class, stared up in surprise. "Kacchan?"
"I have a question." Bakugo asked, shaking as he fought back the uncontrollable rage seething within. "Instead of sitting here listening to this pathetic whelp or discussing what is or what isn't mind control, how about we get straight to the damn point?! LIKE HOW THE HELL DO WE KEEP THESE PSYCHOPATHS FROM TAKING OVER OUR BODIES AGAIN!?"
The demand was met with small murmurs of agreement, with Kirishima also raising his hand. "Yeah, I'm with Bakugo, here. Not having control of yourself or your quirk. It's just plain scary." He closed his eyes, fighting back his emotions as he continued. "I mean…we could have killed someone."
Midoriya watched the expression of the class soften as Kirishima shook with grief. Even Ojiro looked stricken by the display. The only one who seemed unaffected was Aizawa Sensei. He met Bakugo's furious gaze with one of impassiveness as he answered. "You're asking a question that simply has no answer."
The teacher pointed to his eyes, explaining. "That's like asking how to prevent my quirk from stopping your's from working. It's impossible. Quirks are a never ending game of rock, paper, scissors. There's always going to be some quirks that overpower others. It's a simple fact of life in our quirk-filled society. "
"I refused to accept that answer!" Bakugo snapped, glaring across the room at Aizawa. "There has to be something! Anything that could have been done!"
Midoriya frowned, sensing the desperation hidden beneath his furious outburst. It dawned on him just how much this ordeal must have been weighing on Bakugo, someone who had always seemed invincible, always in control. "He probably never thought it would be that easy to get taken over." Midoriya mused, feeling sorry for Bakugo. "He's scared, something he's not used to feeling."
Mineta, crouched miserably in the farthest corner of the room, grumbly mumbled. "If you're that desperate, why don't you just ask Midoriya?"
"Eh?" Midoriya uttered, as Bakugo froze. The rest of the room grew eerily quiet.
Sensing something off, Mineta warily glanced over his shoulder only to give off a shriek of dismay as he was lifted completely off the floor. "EEEEEEEKKKKKKK!"
"Explain yourself, Pipsqueak!" Bakugo demanded, his grip on the top of Mineta's head tightening. "What's Deku have to do with this?!"
Mineta quivered like a bunny caught under a wolf's threatening gaze. "Mi…Mi…Midoriya was already fighting that freaky octopus guy when the rest of us woke up from Siren's quirk!" He pointed a shaking straight at Midoriya. "So that means he must have found another way to break away from her control!" He waved a desperate hand to the others, pleading. "A…ask them! They were there! They saw Midoriya too!"
Tokoyami nodded gravely. "Mineta speaks the truth."
Kaminari's eyes had widened in surprise. "Oh yeah, that's true. I forgot about that."
Realization had also dawned on Kirishima, who turned to Midoriya excitedly. "That's right! You were awake! So you must have figured something out, right?!"
"Uhh…well…I…" Midoriya began, a blush creeping along his features.
"Hey, didn't Midoriya also somehow break away from that guy, Shinso's mind control too?" Sero added, "Remember? It was at the sports festival!"
Interested murmurs followed this comment, with all heads turning in his direction. Midoriya gulped, wanting to shrink back and hide. Unfortunately, two obstacles blocked his path. A furious Bakugo who towered over him, and a newly motivated Kirishima who begged, "Midoriya please! You've got to tell us how you did it!"
"Yeah! Share your secret!" Kaminari added, giving him a nudge.
"This….isn't good." Midoriya thought meekly, as he felt all the eyes in the room fall onto him. It was the interrogation all over again. But now instead of the police it was Bakugo and the whole class standing before him. Truthfully, this was a lot more terrifying. He held up his hands, nervously answering, "Wait! Wait, everyone! It's true that I was the first to break away from Siren's quirk, but I that…that was just a fluke!"
"Two flukes?" Ojiro commented skeptically. "That seems unlikely."
Bakugo's fist grabbed Midoriya's shoulder. "Don't give us that crap Deku! You're keeping something from us! I can see it in your face! NOW SPILL IT!"
Midoriya grimaced, his mind racing to come up with something. "What do I do? I can't just tell them that I woke up because Uraraka kissed me!" He reddened, just the thought sending him into spirals. "There's no way…no way I would even be able to say that! I don't even know for sure if that's the true reason the spell was broken! And what if she doesn't want the class to know! Especially since I pretty much forced her into it!" He felt nervous sweat start to form, his mind swirling into a vortex of anxiety as his classmates continued to press him.
Back in the front of the room, Aizawa watched panic overcome young Midoriya with a growing annoyance. Yes, he knew it was a kiss that broke the quirk. No, he couldn't tell the rest of the class. And yes, this was INCREDIBLY inconvenient and annoying to deal with. "Damn you Midnight and you're stupid instructions." Aizawa cursed, recalling the phone conversation he had with her very soon after the first call.
One Hour and 45 Minutes Earlier:
"Hello?" Aizawa asked, picking up his cell. He sat at a small tea table set in his room, working on his laptop. For a moment, he thought he heard wailing in the background, before Midnight's cheerful voice greeted him.
"Aizawa! Hey, have you by any chance had a moment to read through those papers I sent you?"
"Yes, I was just on my laptop reading them." Aizawa answered. Again he heard the sound of crying, along with Midnight's distant voice.
"Uraraka! It's okay! Just come down and we can talk about this!"
Aizawa lifted an eyebrow. "Midnight, is everything okay over there?"
Midnight came back on, her voice closer now. "Yes! Yes! Everything's just peachy!" Her voice grew distant as he heard her yell. "ASUI! Be a dear and make sure she does float out that open window! THAANNNKS!"
"Midnight, what is going on?"
"Nothing, nothing! We're all good here!" Midnight quickly answered. "Anyway, back to the report! I just needed to fill you in on a small detail that was missing. Have you gotten to the part where Midoriya breaks away from Siren's quirk?"
"Yeah, I just got there." Aizawa replied, scanning the screen. "But it doesn't say how. Is there an injury I need to be aware of?"
"Weeeelll no, not exactly." Midnight answered, sounding mischievously pleased. "We just found out that it was a kiss that broke the Midoriya from Siren's quirk!"
"A kiss?" Aizawa repeated, unimpressed
"Between Uraraka and Midoriya!" Midnight pressed excitedly.
"That doesn't seem very plausible." Aizawa replied, clearly not excited about the news.
He heard Midnight huff indignantly. "What is it with men wanting everything to MAKE SENSE!?"
"If that's all, I'll just go ahead and edit this report." Aizawa said, ready to end this conversation.
"Actually there's more." Midnight continued, making Aizawa pause his typing. "Uraraka, and I imagine Midoriya too, might be a little embarrassed to let the rest of the class know about the kiss." He heard more distant crying along with Midnight giving a weary sigh. "So don't, I REPEAT, DON'T tell the others about their kiss during your debrief today."
Aizawa frowned. "The point of this debrief is to give them the facts. Why should I have to withhold information for such an irrational reason?"
There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. "Did she get mad and hang up?" Aizawa wondered. "Uhhhh…Midnight? Are you still there?"
"Aizawa…." Midnight began, all pleasantries gone from her voice. "I don't think you have a full understanding of what I'm dealing with right now."
The phone switched to video mode, revealing Midnight sitting calmly with her legs crossed as she floated through air amongst several baffled police officers and items. Uraraka was seen in the background, hands covering her embarrassed and crying face as she floated around. Beneath her, Jiro sat on Yaoyorozu's shoulders trying to reach a hand towards Uraraka.
"Come on down, Ochako!" Jiro called out, stretching her fingers out towards the waistband of Uraraka's shorts.
"Please, we only want to help!" Yaoyorozu added, struggling to hold up her friend.
"Just leave me alone!" Uraraka cried out, swatting Jiro's hand away. Her body glowed pink and she too became weightless.
"Jiro!" Yaoyorozu cried out in surprise as Jiro floated away from her shoulders. A weightless Hagakure floated by doing front flips.
"Wheeeeee! This is so much fun!" She called out, passing in front of Midnight.
"I hope you're seeing this." Midnight said to a puzzled Aizawa on the receiver. "Look, at this point I don't give a rat's ass what you think is rational or irrational. Just know that if you breathe a word of that kiss to the class, I will use my whip on you and it will NOT BE SEXUALLY PLEASING! Understood?"
Before Aizawa could answer, the door to the interrogation room opened, with an exhausted looking Officer Loid walking out with a skipping Mina. Mina gasped, a bright smile blossoming at the sight of all the floating people.
"Me! Me! I'm next! I'm next!" Mina exclaimed, hopping up and down excitedly.
Loid gaped, mouth hanging open. "WHAT IS GOING ON OUT HERE!?"
"Ooops, that's my cue! Ciao!"
The receiver went dead and Aizawa was left to ponder just what was occurring at the police station.
Present:
"I guess…" Aizawa realized as he watched the class surrounded a blushing Midoriya for answers. "I have no choice but to help." But before he could come to the rescue, he heard Midoriya speak.
"I'm sorry, but I don't have an answer for you." He said, clenching his fist determinedly. "At least not the one that you want. The truth is, I didn't break out of Siren's quirk through anything special that I did. It came about while battling Uraraka. It was her strength that broke me free. It had nothing to do with any special power I possessed."
"Well spoken, Midoriya." Aizawa murmured, giving an approving nod.
The students smiled, awed by this sweet sentiment. That is until Bakugo furiously declared, "WHAT KIND OF HALF-ASSED ANSWER IS THAT?!" Once again, a defeated Midoriya found himself hounded by their questions.
"Well he tried. Got to give him that." Aizawa sighed, holding up a hand for their attention. "Class! Listen up! There is a reason why Midoriya was able to break free from Siren's quirk." The class grew quiet, waiting expectedly for him to continue. The teacher paused, carefully considering his next words.
"...Moving on." Aizawa concluded, turning to the white board.
"HE IGNORED US!" The whole class exclaimed in shocked fury. The class turned back to Midoriya, tempers flaring.
"Enough games Deku!" Bakugo snarled, roughly grabbing the front of Midoriya's shirt. "If you have answers you better hand them over! I swear if you don't I'll just BURN THEM OUT OF YO—" Bakugo halted, paling as his hand flew to cover his mouth.
Sensing something wrong, Midoriya grabbed his fist, gently pulling it down as he quickly asked, "Kacchan, what's the matter? Kacc–?" In answer, Bakugo's hand reached over, leaning on Midoriya's shoulder for support as he took on a sickly green hue. "Kacchan…" Midoriya whispered, concern for his friend rising. "Kacchan, are you….?"
Then, before anyone could blink, Bakugo dashed to the nearest trash bin and began to vomit. The room was filled with the sound of retching noises as every morsel of Bakugo's stomach was violently puked up. Midoriya carefully approached, squatting next to his friend. The rest of the class stood still, unsure of what to do.
"I was warned this might happen."
They all turned to Aizawa Sensei, who sat calmly evaluating the situation. "The doctor's report mentioned there might be side effects to Siren's quirk. Nausea is one of them."
"That….bitch!" Bakugo seethed, portally lifting his head over the bin, before succumbing again to his sickness.
"Wait…becoming sick like that is a side-effect of mind control?" Sato asked in puzzlement. The portion of the class who had not been controlled looked disturbed by this detail. With even Ojiro looking unsettled.
"Mind control, no" Aizawa answered, "But like I said before. Siren's quirk wasn't mind control. Her quirk dealt with manipulation of the hormones, especially testosterone. Hormones play a vital role in the biology of our bodies. Fooling around with that is going to have consequences." Aizawa carefully explained. "Most of the high school hostages have experienced similar illnesses from days of exposure to it."
"But we were only there for a few hours, tops!" Kirishima exclaimed, trying to be heard over Bakugo's retching.
"The amount of testosterone created by Siren's quirk is most likely factored by the existing temperament of the individual." Aizawa explained, glancing at where Bakugo crouched. "So I imagine the harder an individual is to control, the more hormones she has to manipulate. Kind of similar to getting an adrenaline drug forcefully injected into you."
"Yeah or like being pregnant." Sero added, snickering.
The retching noises ceased, with a pale and gaunt Bakugo lifting his head from the bin. "Damn it Sero!" He snarled, despite his weakened state. "Say that again and I'LL BLAST THAT STUPID SMIRK OFF YOU FACE!" He then gagged, once again resuming puking his guts out.
"Calm down, Kacchan." Midoriya sternly chided him as he rubbed his back soothingly. "Just focus on getting it all out of you."
"HANDS OFF!" Bakugo viciously snapped, reddening at the child-like treatment. In a lower voice he angrily added, "Don't think this is over Deku. I've known you long enough to know when you're hiding something."
"Trust me, I know." Midoriya quietly replied, not moving away.
As if attempting to divert the class's attention away from his two friends, Todoroki raised his hand. "Aizawa Sensei, I have a question concerning Siren's quirk." Everyone turned, their curiosities piqued.
Aizawa nodded. "Go ahead."
"I wanted to know why Siren's quirk didn't have any effect on me." The room went totally quiet. Even Bakugo's puking ceased, with both him and Midoriya turning to listen.
Aizawa blinked, confused. "Maybe you just didn't hear her voice?"
"I'm pretty sure that's not the case." Todoroki replied. "I know when I was in the ocean with Bakugo, Kirishima and Kaminari, I did hear a melody of some kind. It was so soft I assumed it was just my imagination. That was the exact point I noticed their behavior start to change." He cocked his head, questioning. "Not that I'm complaining about it, but I am curious to know why I wouldn't be affected by her quirk when the others around me were."
"And you sure you heard her voice?"
"Positive." Todoroki confirmed with a nod.
Aizawa scratched his chin, looking thoughtful."Hmmm…according to what we know so far from analyzing her quirk. The determining factor of whether a victim would be affected or not is their hormone levels. The average age of a victim fell between 14-18, where testosterone levels are at its highest."
"Guess someone wasn't man enough for Siren's taste." Mineta snidely commented from the back, earning annoyed glares to shoot his way from the rest of the class.
"I highly doubt that's the case." Aizawa replied, carefully eyeing Todoroki. For the most part, he looked like a normal, healthy hormone filled teenager. "But there has to be something that's not noticeable." He turned to Aoyama, asking. "Aoyama, your bio mentions you sing in a choir as a hobby. Is that correct?"
"Oi!" Aoyama replied, winking.
"Then in a minute, I would like you to sing the musical scales." The class gawked, unsure of what was going on. Only Aoyama seemed unperturbed by these strange instructions.
"It would be my pleasure!"
Aizawa nodded, now addressing Todoroki. "Todoroki, I want you to listen to Aoyama as he sings."
"Uh, sure?" Todoroki answered, as confused as the rest of his classmates.
Aoyama stood up, giving an elegant bow to the class. "Time for my classroom debut!" He took a deep breath and then opened his mouth to beautifully sing the musical scales, "Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti, Dooooooo!"
The class clapped politely as he once again gave a flourished bow. Aizawa gave a satisfied nod, turning to Todoroki. "Okay, your turn."
Todoroki blinked, surprised. "Sir?"
"Go ahead. Repeat the scales, just like Aoyoma."
An excited murmur swept through the class. Would they actually be able to hear Todoroki sing?! Though the boy looked far from pleased, he merely shrugged at the instructions, standing up and facing the class.
"Here are the musical scales." Todoroki said, keeping his introduction simple. The class went silent, waiting with bated breath. He took a deep breath and then began….
"DOooOO, re, Meee, FAAA, so, LA, tiiii, DOOOOOOO!"
Absolutely no one had expected such a horrendous sound to escape from the mouth of the dashing Todoroki. Whatever he was singing was a far cry from the charming musical notes sung by Aoyama. It was a mix mash of pitches, sounding closer to the dying call of a bloated beached whale than anything similar to a melody. The damage it caused was quite effective. Within seconds of him singing, all the students fell to the floor, covering their ears from the painful sound. The worst was for Bakugo. Who, after hearing Todoroki's singing, instantly fell back to the garbage bin, his puking renewed for a second round.
Todoroki halted, baffled at why his classmates resembled victims of a brutal attack. He turned to Aizawa Sensei, for an explanation. The teacher sat, unperturbed, with a finger plugged into each ear.
"Well that explains a lot." He calmly stated, popping his fingers out. "Congrats, Todoroki. You are utterly and disastrously tone deaf."
Todoroki confusedly accepted this declaration amidst the chorus of pained cries from his classmates.
"Teach, I don't think Bakugo's the only one going to be sick here!" Kirishima moaned from his position on the ground.
"There is a darkness within him…" Tokoyami murmured weakly. "...that should NEVER be left out!"
"My ears are bleeding!" Mineta wailed.
"I'll never listen to music again!" Sero groaned.
"Aizawa Sensei!" Midoriya called out from the back, still resting a hand on Bakugo as he continued to hurl into the bin. "Do we have any nausea medicine? I think he's getting worse."
Aizawa sighed, setting his notes down on his desk with a loud thud. "Well, it looks like I've lost complete control of this lesson. Might as well end it for today." He strolled to the door, calling out. "I'll be back with meds. Don't kill each other while I'm gone."
As the door slid shut, leaving the class alone with each other. They sat nervously, not sure of what to say. Finally, Kaminari casually leaned back, loudly stating, "I don't know about you guys….but I feel like I'm learning a lot about Todoroki on this trip!"
Todoroki blinked. "Was I really that bad?"
"YES!" The whole class called out together.
They paused, briefly looking at one another before they all fell over in uncontrollable laughter. And just like that, class 1-A once again became whole. With tears of mirth running down their faces, the boys moved their seat cushions closer together, forming a circle where they all began discussing in detail all that they had missed out on.
"Take a look at this bad boy we built while you guys were off flirting with the girls." Sero said, pulling out his phone and showing off the picture of the sand palace the class had constructed together. "Pretty neat huh?"
"Ohhhh!" Kamanari exclaimed, eyes popping. "Dude, you all built that?!"
"Splendid details." Tokoyami said, impressed.
"Wow! That's amazing!" Kirishima gushed, giving Sero, Sato, and Shoji fist bumps.
"It was Iida's idea." Sero explained, grinning at their class president who beamed at the compliments.
"It was all a team effort." Iida replied, humbly. "Next time we do a beach trip, I encourage you to join us!"
"Totally!" Kirishima agreed, beaming.
Midoriya smiled, watching the interactions from his perch next to Bakugo. Sweat glistened over Bakugo as he weakly knelt against the bin, too exhausted to move. Midoriya leaned in to check on him. "Feeling better?"
"Shut up." He growled, though the attack lacked any of the usual muster. Todoroki approached, kneeling down next to Midoriya.
"How is he doing?" He asked, casting a concerned glance at Bakugo.
"I think better, though that's probably mostly due to him not having anything left in his stomach." Midoriya confessed. Before Todoroki could reply, Ojiro walked up, holding a glass of water in his hand.
"Here, drink this." Ojiro sat, squatting down next to Bakugo. "It'll help, though make sure to only take small sips or it'll soon come back up."
"Don't tell me what to do!" Bakugo snapped, shooting him a weak glare. But to Midoriya's surprise he took the glass, wordlessly setting it down next to him. Ojiro smiled, returning to join the others. Once he was gone, Bakugo slowly brought the water to his lips, taking a small sip. Almost instantly the cold liquid threw him into a coughing fit.
Todoroki patted his back. "You know, my older sister used to sing a lullaby to us whenever we were ill. Shall I do the same for you?"
At the suggestion, Midoriya turned a ghastly white. "I…uh…don't think that'll be necessary!"
"If you even dare, I'll blast you all the way to the mainland!" Was Bakugo's blunt reply.
As those two hovered near the ill Bakugo, the rest of the class were pondering just where a certain classmate was. Sero scratched his head, glancing around. "Uhh, does anyone know where Mineta snuck off too?"
Iida stood up, adjusting his glasses as he feverishly studied the room. "Don't tell me that troublemaker has run off! How dare he!? Especially after Aizawa Sensei told us to wait here!"
"He probably doesn't want to deal with being interrogated again, that little weasel." Ojiro added, tail twitching in annoyance.
"I still want to know what he did to the girls." Kaminari stated, angry at himself for letting Mineta get away. "I should have kept a closer eye on him to begin with! Especially since I knew he was up to something!"
"You heard that email." Shoji reminded him, "Whatever it is, the girls obviously don't want us to know the details."
"It must have been pretty bad, then." Kirishima said, angrily punching his fist into his palm. "No wonder that punk didn't want to go and apologize to the girls! Unmanliness like that really pisses me off!"
"That Mineta should be hanged by his ankles for his deeds." Tokoyami added, with Dark Shadow adding, "And I'LL do the hanging!"
Iida shook his head, sterning lecturing them. "Let us not talk about such things! We should just trust that Aizawa Sensei and Midnight Sensei have his punishments taken care of."
Kirishima turned away with a frustrated scowl. "Yeah, I know! But it just sucks for the girls! First, Mineta, then Siren! Not to mention fighting us…They just haven't gotten a break today."
The others nodded sadly in agreement.
Kaminari suddenly brightened. "Hey dudes! I just had the best idea! Why don't we throw them a welcome home party!?" He stood up, excitedly explaining. "You know! Kind of like when the inn prepared that awesome food for us when we got here. But BETTER!"
Kirishima stood up, roused by the proposal. "Yeah, we can make it into a huge celebration! A thank you for all they've done today!"
"I can talk to the kitchen staff," Sato offered. "See if I can borrow their kitchen to bake some goodies!"
"I've got the decorations covered!" Sero grinning as he pulled out a long strand of his tape.
"You know, I'm pretty sure I saw one of those old karaoke machines stored in the dining hall!" Aoyama added, giving a sparkly wink. "Can't have a party without music!"
"Excellent idea everyone!" Iida exclaimed loudly, trying to be heard over the chorus of suggestions being passed around. "I'll speak to both Aizawa Sensei and the innkeepers to get their verbal permission!"
Todoroki raised his hand. "I have some fresh seafood that I caught today while fishing. We can use that for the party."
"Really…how much?" Midoriya asked, as Bakugo turned a bright shade of green at the mention of seafood.
Todoroki thought for a moment. "Hmmm, about twenty-three kilos." (about 50lbs)
"TWENTY-THREE KILOS!?"
Midoriya, along with the rest of the class, gawked at the number. Todoroki tilted his head, curiously asking. "Is that not enough?"
Midoriya chuckled. "I'm pretty sure that's more than enough!"
The rest of the class laughed along with him, throwing out more ideas. Unknownst to them, Aizawa Sensei had been standing outside the sliding door, quietly listening in. A relieved smile played on his lips, glad to hear the class returning to normalcy. "I knew they would work it out."
He blinked, pulling out his phone as it vibrated. He read the contents, grin broadening. "Oh, they're going to love this." He slid open the door, popping his head in.
"Hey class, just wanted to give you a heads up. I just got a text from Midnight. The girls will be here in about an hour."
"AN HOUR!?" The whole class screamed in unison, expressions horrified.
The teacher quickly slid the door shut, chuckling at the sounds of panicked feet scrambling up. He moved back just in time, as the door slid open, a stampede of students rushing out and pushing their way through the thin hallway to get to their various tasks. Iida ran out, pausing to briefly bow to Sensei and ask permission to use the courtyard for a party.
"If it's okay with the innkeepers, it's fine with me."
"Thank you!" Iida called out, using his quirk to speed down the hall.
Aizawa shook his head in awe. "There's only one force on this planet that could make a room of teenage boys have that much energy." He mused, once again thinking to himself how truly scary girls were.
Ember Sunblaze: So that is my reasoning for why Todoroki was not effected by Siren's quirk. It maybe kind of a let down for some people, but that reason was planned since the very beginning of this story. In fact, when doing research into the condition, I actually felt Todoroki could realistically be tone deaf. Studies have shown individual's who are tone deaf have a difficult time catching emotional subtexts in phrases since it's harder for them to detect sarcasm or different tones in a person's voice. Which, let's face it, Todoroki in the show isn't always great at!
I also thought it was a great joke to put in. My attempt at humor...Please Review!
