Chapter One: Desperation Requires a Sacrifice

天国的白雪公主

Toshiro Hitsugaya Voice Over:

Former Fifth Division Taicho, Sosuke Aizen, wishes to become the new king and rule us all. He has only to forge the key to enter the Royal Realm in order to begin his attack.

If I was anyone else, I'd just have to put my faith in the legendary Zero Division, and in the king himself.

But, see, I know someone. The Imperial Princess, the one who is to marry the king's son. Few know who she really is. Right now, she's my division's third seat. She remains human, and only Ichigo's hollow side, known as Kail, sustains her safely here.

How much longer can her identity remain a secret now that Aizen's attack is upon us?

天国的白雪公主

Sosuke Aizen smirked as he looked down to a bloodied Toshiro Hitsugaya. He would enjoy tearing this boy to pieces. He wondered if Momo Hinamori would recover enough to hear the news. He would love to see her lose the rest of her sanity.

天国的白雪公主

There had been enough time for Shirahime, a reincarnation of an elder god, to repeat the words over and over. Each time, she forced more of her spiritual power into them. Every round she felt herself break, part of herself fade away.

"Please forgive me, Yachiru," she asked to herself as she thought of her daughter. "My heart isn't strong enough to stay with you." Perhaps Yachiru would one day hear her words.

But Yachiru would grow up with those who love her. She would live on and never enter that place. Yachiru would never see those brothers and sisters of hers. She would never become a pawn in the insane plan now in place.

Truth be told, Sosuke Aizen was easier to deal with. He was a rational being. Power hungry and corrupt, but still held onto some rationality. In another time, another life, perhaps he would have been tolerable.

Another life. Now that was irony.

This was the last one. Was it so bad she liked it the most? Was a great sin she had for once in many lifetimes found peace and love?

That was why she could give it up now. Desperation like this required a sacrifice. Her life itself meant nothing. But this last one meant all.

"I don't regret coming here," she told herself. "I do regret not getting my other children back. But they won't be without me much longer now."

She felt the lock break.

Kosetsu's form rippled. She could see him look at her in her mind. He would know now it was time.

She supposed she regretted she'd most likely take him with her. She wanted to leave him here, but it could not be helped.

She was no longer a god in this life and needed any help she could get.

No longer a god, but not for much longer.

The blue flames raced across her skin. Her snow-white skin tone turned closer to the tan of her human self.

So, she would see herself one last time. She missed herself. Her glowing snow-white hair flickered to black. Her blue eyes changed to green.

The fire burned from her insides. It would purify not only her human self, but her mortal self with it.

It would take with it that fragment of Ichigo Kurosaki.

"Kail," she called to him. "It's time for you to go now."

The one people assumed to be Ichigo's hollow self fumed. He tried to hold on.

"I'm sorry, Kail. This part of you is not a god. You can't hold on anymore."

"My one," he hissed.

"I am merely a thing, my prince," she reminded him. "I was sold to emperor to belong to that house for every life."

"A life that's about to end!" he objected.

"Yes," she smiled. "My previous self finally did it. The end to my hell. But I guess she didn't do it. I did. I chose this incarnation. I am nearly all of me in this moment.

"One forgets their past life unless they are a god. The rules won't apply. This is a moment the rules of the heavens must bend or break."

Kail heaved as his spiritual body burned.

"You have another self, Prince Kail. I wonder how he would have been?" she asked. "All of the things you have done to and for me in the name of your supposed love, I wonder if he would have done the same?"

"I will take Ichigo's body and we can be together," he vowed.

"No."

"I will become the master."

"Let your wish go. You had more time with me. Wasn't that enough?"

"All of eternity could not be enough!"

"Too bad. The emperor left first. Now I must follow."

It was easier to touch him now, to control him.

She opened her eyes in an inner world and looked at that hollow. She now looked the same age she did when the prince first vowed to marry her in that past life.

Kail didn't deserve this. This form of Kail didn't deserve the honor. Yet still, she remembered the young prince's declaration.

"Let me go," she insisted.

"No. Never. Not in any lifetime."

"You can't hate me for Kenpachi? For Yumi? For whomever else I was with in another life?"

"I can hate them. I won't hate you. I love you, my princess."

She grabbed him and pressed her lips to his. He felt more real than hollow, more flesh than spirit.

She let him go.

"It should have been you, Kail. The emperor should have given me to you. I never betrayed my husband. I may have still loved Zangetsu the most, but we should have had our life together. Wouldn't it have been a good life?" she wondered.

"Yes," Kail answered.

"We can have that now," Ichigo and Kail said together.

Shirahime looked away to where the battle would be going on. Ichigo could hear her now.

She took Kail's hand.

"Ichigo, you're a boy. You have a chance to start over. You can be with Rukia, with anyone. Take this life and don't look back."

"He chooses you," Kail said.

"Your past life doesn't rule either of you," she said.

"We both choose you," Kail said.

She shook her head.

"I'll leave first," she said and faded back into the real world.
