36: Familiar Faces
=Orario=
It's been a little over two days since Bell and his family had arrived in Orario and honestly… things were spiraling out of control in some areas. Firstly, what the hell is going on with the Loki familia? Wherever Bell goes, he feels like he's running into them.
Only the first day did he run into Finn, Raul and Ais once, but Riveria Twice! Let's not forget the day after that. Apparently, word got around that they were rebuilding the hearth mansion.
Yep, Bell blames his family for that one.
But because of it, there were people coming to lend a hand… too many hands. It was honestly kind of endearing, but it was getting on his nerves.
There is a point where help turns into hurt. All they are doing is slowing down their progress at this point. Like come on! They had been working on the same god damn door for an entire hour now! He could have done it in like five seconds!
Bell sighed out as he just wanted to kick everyone away and do everything himself with his family.
At least they had made progress. Not as much as it could have been, but progress nonetheless. In front of him, was basically a mirror replication of the front side of the hearth manor.
The fact that it had only taken a day to get this far had surprised people, and sent even more willing people to help.
Bell this close to bombing them with scourge that it wasn't even funny.
Well, on a more positive note, some of the hands were actually useful like some of the Ganesha familia members. Because of their roles in the city, they were actually pretty competent carpenters as they not only acted like the civil police in Orario, but also as it's fire brigade and reconstruction hands, though they did purchase all the supplies for it from construction Familias like the Vishwakarma familia… yeah, that's a mouthful.
"Hey! What are you doing!?" Bell called out as half the area froze, staring at him. The man in question went pale as he realized he was talking to him.
"That isn't suppo- HEY! WHY ARE HAMMERING A SCREW! IT'S A GODDAMN SCREW! SCREW IT, DON'T SMASH IT LIKE A MUSCLEBRAIN" Bell screamed as he saw a person trying to hammer a screw into a screwhole… like what?
Elora at the side sweatdropped from the absolute fear Bell was instilling in everyone around, as did the rest of the family.
Bell felt like smashing something, and in the corner of his eye, saw a person trying to saw a damn stone like it's wood…
He sighed as he heard Erebus' snicker from the side, begging the gods for mercy on his poor soul.
=Guild=
"Oy, Lil'Lilli!" Welf called out as Lili looked towards him before nodding. They had been planning on going into the dungeon today but their familias had gotten in their way so everyone was late.
"Anvil head, have you seen Haruhime or Mikoto-san anywhere? Lili has been looking all over" Welf shook his head as he looked around.
"No… I've actually been looking for them too. It's weird, it isn't like them to be late" Lili nodded in agreement as they sat down.
"So, Lili is curious, have you heard the rumors?" she asked as Welf looked as if she had stabbed him.
"Do you not know me well enough!? I always know the rumors!" He gasped out in mock hurt as Lili glared at him.
"You know what Lili is asking. The rumors about The Royal Executioner coming to Orario!" At that, Welf sobered up before nodding.
"Of course, who hasn't… The man is basically the talk of the entire city. But hey, get this. Apparently, they have purchased a very specific piece of land, and is rebuilding a very specific house" Lili's eyes widened at that.
"Wait… you don't mean…?" She trailed off as Welf nodded, his expression solemn as his gaze naturally turned to the direction of his old home.
"Yeah… our old home. I'm guessing Bell asked him to since he met him" At that, Lili nodded looking down, unable to refute it.
"But damn, they gotta get a better name than 'The Royal Executioner'. I mean, it's a mouthful you know" Welf complained as Lili frowned, opening her mouth.
"What's wrong with it? A royal executioner is an honorable title to have" The voice of Mikoto interrupted Lili's next words as Welf turned to the two new arrivals.
"About time you two got here, and sure, the name may be 'honourable', but it's still irritating to say and I can't even imagine calling him that casually" He deepened his voice, mocking Mikoto's choice of word on the manner before grinning.
Mikoto simply smiled and shook her head.
"I think it's good. Like a hero from the stories I read" Haruhime commented with a smile as Welf quirked an eyebrow alongside Lili.
"You and your stories… anyway, he needs a new name" Lili sighed at Welf's words before shaking her head.
"He does have a different name you know. Lili thinks it was…" She thought about it, having lost it for a second as the three listened, Welf taking a sip from his bottle of water "Oh, right. Apollyon!" Welf instantly stumbled and spat out the water in Lili's face.
"His name is WHAT!?" Welf's eyes were wide as saucers while Lili puffed out in disgust.
"Anvil-Head, You idiot!" Lili huffed out as Haruhime gave her a handkerchief which Lili quickly grabbed and washed up.
"You're not joking right, because this would be a VERY bad joke, Lil' Lili" Welf got out frantically, causing the prum to blink.
"Oh, you're from Rakia, right? That name must mean something to you" Mikoto said as she tilted her head. Welf who seemed like he was about to faint nodded.
"Yeah… well… it's just that he's now technically third in command of Rakia…" He said as Lili who finished cleaning herself up nodded.
"Yes, and Lili sees your concern. Apollyon not only has more pull in the Far East than all nobles there combined, but also has rights to command the Rakian Army. He also has basically every village on his side as well from his continued assistance" Lili frowned as Haruhime blinked.
"What's so wrong with that? It's only what a hero would do" She questioned as Lili sighed.
"Haruhime… If he has this much power… it means there is nothing anyone can do against him unless they want half the continent to be hostile towards them" Lili explained.
"It means if the dude one day decided to ever go crazy as the Rakian's did with magic swords…" Welf continued, shuddering at the prospect. Haruhime nodded, understanding their point.
"It's understandable, but as Haruhime-dono pointed out, he is considered a hero. With everything he has done, he does deserve the benefit of the doubt, don't you agree?" Mikoto threw back as Lili and Welf looked at each other before sighing.
"Lili concedes that you have a point"
"Yeah, you do make some sense" The two said at the same time as Mikoto nodded with a proud smile as Haruhime nervously laughed.
"Anyway, are we going?" The redhead asked as he stood up, nodding towards the dungeon.
"Welf…" Lili muttered as the blacksmith blinked at her usage of his actual name.
"Yeah, Lili?"
"Lili thinks we should take a break for the day… I'd like to see our home again… not the rubble it was" She said quietly as the atmosphere quickly saddened. Welf took a deep sigh before nodding.
"Yeah… I want to see it too, though it's probably not complete" Haruhime looked down on the ground with lidded eyes at the two talking, remembering how happy they used to be.
Sure, they were happy now. Mikoto and her both had agreed on that manner but… they weren't the same.
Bell had been the centerpiece of their group from the start, the one that everyone united around. If it weren't for him, none of them would have met and… in all honesty, they had only managed to stick together and make it this far out of pure stubbornness to wait for him to return.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and she instantly knew it was Mikoto. She always was the one to come to her aid whenever she got in a mood.
Haruhime nodded slightly before silently taking a deep breath. She calmed down before looking straight again, just on time as Lili and Welf turned around.
"What about you two?" Welf asked as Haruhime nodded and Mikoto smiled.
"Of course, Bell-dono would never forgive us if we missed our precious home being rebuilt!" Mikoto exclaimed as the three chuckled at her manner of speaking.
"Yeah, he'd probably make a loud 'EHHH' followed by 'Why did you miss that! It's our home!'" Welf imitated Bell's voice as even Lili was unable to resist a snicker.
"Lili agrees. That does sound like Bell-sama" She smiled, approving of Welf's knowledge of the man… however outdated it is.
"Alright then, let's be off then!" Welf grinned as he began heading toward the former home of theirs.
=Hearth Mansion Ruins=
Bell stared at the building in front of him… or what was at least soon to be one. To his utter surprise, they had managed to rebuild half the entire building in a single day.
How? Bell had absolutely no clue. Even in Anfesera, building an entire structure would take him at least a week because of all the meticulous planning, carpeting and precise positioning. If one rushed it, it would only end in disaster.
But somehow, they'd managed to build half a mansion in a day, excluding the furniture of course, but Bell was going to just buy those. It's not like he's short on funds… After all, according to guild records, Loki familia's annual budget is estimated to be around 800 million valis… yeah, he was wayyy too rich.
"Amazing! Anvil head! They have already finished half of the building!" Bell blinked at the voice before an involuntary smile spread on his face.
He turned to the side, seeing four people walking forward… four very familiar people. They hadn't noticed him… somehow, so he took the opportunity to inspect them.
Welf
He'd grown taller, probably around his height, maybe a bit taller. His features had also mellowed out alongside his hair growing longer. It went down to his shoulders now in a messy manner that honestly suited him. His gear also looked a lot better now, he seemed to have really improved as a smith over the years, which comes with his growth to a level 4 adventurer.
Lili
She was still the same Lili in size, hair around the same length, face the same sharper… but her eyes. They looked like they held a lot more confidence in them. He had heard of her position in her familia and her achievements reaching to level 4. She had really come a long way from that lonely prum on the streets with no confidence in herself.
Mikoto
To describe her appearance in one word… exotic. She had filled out a lot over the years, and in all honesty, he'd be surprised if she didn't have a lot of prospective husbands. She had that sharp, confident look in her eyes. Her smile was honestly beautiful. Then there was the fact that she was a successful adventurer, having reached level 5. When he had heard it, he had honestly been filled with pride at her achievement. One of his best friends he had in his younger days had risen all the way to first class.
Bell smiled and shook his head before his eyes turned to the last of the bunch…
Haruhime
To be honest, he didn't even know where to begin. If he had thought she had been beautiful back when he was 14… then she was absolutely gorgeous now. Her hair was a brilliant color, matching the sun as it gleamed in the light, her smile could honestly melt the dirtiest hearts into pure gold and to top it off, she was the kindest person he had ever met, period. There wasn't an evil bone in her body.
Don't get him wrong, his family was amazing in about a billion different ways, but she made everyone including himself pale in comparison.
If one would ask the thing that had surprised him the most during his time away… was every time he heard that she had leveled up, each time more surprised than the last, and now sitting as a new level 4, having only achieved it a month ago.
Bell smiled at the thought of how far they had come and walked towards them. The four were so focused on the house, they didn't even hear his approach until he cleared his throat.
"Woah!"
""EEK!""
"My Lord!"
The four simultaneously jumped, letting out noises or words in surprise as Bell resisted the urge to laugh.
"Hey… it's been a long time" Bell said as the four blinked before smiling.
"It's you…" Welf whispered out as Bell tilted his head.
"Sure is, who else would it be? The Argonaut?" He snickered, practically seeing Haruhime's eyes light up.
"You know his tale?" She asked as Bell's smile widened, Vivid memories of a room in a brothel where he and Haruhime met played in his mind.
"Yeah, kind of hard not to know after having met your friend once" He joked as the four smiled.
"So… Lili is curious. Why are you rebuilding our old home?" She asked as Bell turned around, staring at it.
"Let's just say that a certain someone told me it was better for me to use it, than not being used at all. Only issue was… well, you can guess" Awkward chuckled escaped his mouth as the four snickered.
"That makes sense, and thanks for rebuilding it. It meant a lot to us back in the day, still does but we never could gather the funds to do anything about its state" Welf sadly explained as the other three frowned.
"Don't worry, I'm not really short on funds, being hailed as a national hero and all" Bell said unentusiastically, which didn't go unnoticed by a certain keen prum in the area.
"You don't like it? Lili would think you would be happy for being called a hero" She frowned as Bell sighed.
"Well… when one title makes you seem like a heartless killer, and another an elven genocider, it does get some bad reception here and there. Don't get me wrong, it's improved over time but… sometimes people can go a little overboard" Bell sweatdropped as he remembered multiple instances where he was practically shover in between people who tried to get closer to him… mostly women for some reason… which he won't ever mention to Elora for the sake of their lives.
"Haha, yeah. I remember when Bell first became the 'Record holder'. He practically ran around the entirety of Orario to get away from the gods wanting him to transfer" Welf laughed as Lili snorted alongside Mikoto. Haruhime just looked at the three, letting out small confused 'Eh's' as she hadn't really been in the loop at the time.
Bell on the other hand almost blushed in embarrassment. He remembered that day, and to think that even Welf, who hadn't known him at the time knew about it. It felt like he was being chased by an angry mob the entire day. The next day, he had been a bed-rat, not leaving it in fear of being chased again.
"Is that so? Sounds like him, he is quite lively" Bell commented, remembering how he used to be.
"Yeah, that he is… by the way… I feel bad for asking again, but have you heard anything from him recently?" Welf asked, turning a little bashful under the gaze of the masked man.
"Oh, who knows. His return might not be as far away as you might think" Bell's hidden meaning behind the words fell on deaf ears as the four grinned, Mikoto nodding along as Haruhime seemed to be on the verge of tears.
"Really!?" Welf exclaimed before he was practically shoved to the side by Lili who shoved her tiny body over his.
"Bell-sama is returning!?" Bell's eyes went into panic mode as her voice carried and he quickly made a shushing motion as the prum smacked her hands on her mouth.
"I understand you're excited but have you forgotten the reason he was cast out in the first place?" He stepped aside as the two clearly intended targets looked to the side.
"Sorry… didn't mean to scream it" Lili apologized through her hands as Welf laughed awkwardly.
"Yeah… our bad… anyway, you really mean it" He tried to reaffirm the words he had heard.
"..." Bell hesitated as he desperately wanted to just tell them, his heart telling one thing and his brain telling another.
'I must wait, and get things ready…' Bell thought as he snapped he prepared his next words… lies, that hurt to utter to his friends in front of him.
"Ye-"
"Oh, there he is!" Bell blinked as he was interrupted. His gaze shifted behind him as Adrienne skipped towards him.
"Dad! Aren't you going to help us?" She asked as Bell noticed the others working on the house… alone this time as the sun had set… huh, when did that happen?
"Oh, Welf! It's been a long time" Adrienne grinned as she walked up to him, the Redhead returning it in full.
"It has, though I can't remember catching your name at the monsterphillia" Adrienne just shrugged as she gave him her hand.
"It's Adrienne Kalif. Just call me Adrienne" Her smile was infectious as Welf grasped the outstretched hand firmly and took note of her strength.
"Nice to meet you, Adrienne. This is Lil' Lilli, our resident supporter. Th-"
"Hey! Get my name right! It's Liliruca Arde!"
"-e girl with black hair is Mikoto, our main front liner and samurai. Lastly is our mage, Haruhime" He continued without batting an eye at the fuming prum. Adrienne just snickered at the two before her mind latched onto something.
"Supporter? I think Mom and dad mentioned something about that…" She squinted her eyes as she tried to recall.
"Lili's job is to support the party, helping out wherever needed, collecting magic stones and carrying the luggage so other's aren't hindered" She proudly said as Adrienne frowned.
"But… aren't you the smallest? Shouldn't the biggest carry the heavy stuff?" Adrienne asked as Bell put a hand on her shoulder.
"A party's setup is carefully picked, Adrienne. She probably has a skill that helps her, or at least some kind of development ability" Bell explained, trying to sound as if he's guessing.
Lili just looked at him, not wanting to give the answer but blinking at the fact that he had been correct on his first guess.
"Anyway, me and my daughter should help the others" Bell said as he led Adrienne towards the house.
"Oh, speaking of daughters, I should get back to mine" Welf huffed out as if he had just remembered a task he had forgotten.
"Isn't that a little bad to forget…" Lili awkwardly whispered as she felt bad for the newborn child.
"That's right, how are things with you and Hephaestus?" Mikoto asked as Welf grinned.
"Really good. She has gotten really lively ever since Sua came into our lives, she's been a lot calmer… well… at least towards me" He answered as flashes of her basically coddling the newborn to death went through his mind.
"Yep, I truly pity that kid" Lili huffed out as Welf gave her the stink eye.
"Anyway, I gotta go. Thanks for the time" He thanked them before taking his leave.
"Well, I also got paperwork. How about actually exploring the dungeon tomorrow?" She asked as the two Far Eastern girls looked at each other before smiling.
"Definitely" Haruhime smiled as Lili returned it.
"Alright, bye!" She quickly scurried off as Mikoto and Haruhime began heading home, Bell watching the three leave with a smile.
'I'm closer than you think' Bell thought, before turning back to his work.
=Three Days later=
"Ah! Finally!" Bache sighed out as she plopped herself down on the newly acquired sofa, everyone else doing something similar. Nearly Five days of non-stop work had taken its toll on everyone but it had been worth it.
The Mansion was officially complete, with a few tweaks here and there like the training room added in the basement, laced with Durandal in order to not break. The total cost of the entire place had put a sizable dent in Bell's funds, but the remaining amount was nothing to scoff at.
Meanwhile, Bell was the only one having difficulty relaxing at all as his eyes through the mask were glued out the window towards Babel tower.
He could feel her gaze, so much so he could almost sense her feelings through it. Freya was in a mixture of emotions, confusion, curiosity, anger and frustration.
He guessed the latter two were from a certain encounter with an annoying feline, though he was not to blame, he could understand if she was a little mad at him for 'stomping' on her precious collection.
It was honestly the previous two that worried him. If she was confused, she would eventually come for answers, doubly so with her curiosity. He just had to remember not to look at her, but around her. His Liaris Freeze had been the reason he had been able to resist her before and he had a suspicion about something as well but he didn't feel confident enough to try it.
He sighed out as he tried to forcefully ignore the eyes watching him, failing miserably.
"Is everything alright B-" Elora began as he shook his head.
"Don't use my name, you know who might hear it" He sighed out before apologizing to her with his eyes for his tone.
Her smile told him everything he needed to know that she wasn't mad.
"Sorry, Apollyon. Is everything alright?" She asked again as he sighed out.
"Yeah, it's just that we should start to think about moving forward with our goal…" He said as the kids perked up alongside Erebus.
"Oh… so it's time to finally cause a huge ruckus?" the god asked as Bell sweatdropped.
"You can say that… though haven't we already done that?" Chuckled reverbated throughout the room at that.
"True, but you do realize that you will have to announce your level then. There will be a lot of questions" Bell's eyes hesitated for a second before reinvigorating his resolve.
"I know… but it has to be done" He said as he stood up and stretched "You're going to have to come with. The god does have to write down his name after all" This caused Erebus to sigh as he stood up, waving his hand half heartedly.
"Yeah, Yeah. Whatever you say" He sarcastically remarked as he walked towards the double door leading to the main hallway.
"Right… anyone else want to come with?" At the question, the kids just groaned and shook their heads.
"Sorry dad, but I don't think I can move my feet or arms at all" Adrienne complained as the twins looked like they fell asleep.
"That's fine. Bache? Elora?" The two shrugged before standing up.
"Eh, I'd probably regret missing that elf's reaction to writing our familia into their records" Bache chuckled as Elora nodded.
"Yeah, I agree with Bache. It'll be fun" Bell nodded before the three left the room, joining Erebus.
Shortly after, they left the mansion and headed towards the guild office, drawing a lot of attention their way.
Sometimes Bell wished the passive pressure from an adventurer of a high level was annoying. At least people could get used to it.
It didn't take them long to reach the office, the house being relatively close to it. The moment the group entered, Bell locked on to the elf he wanted to do the paperwork.
Eina was currently talking to another adventurer with an awkward smile on her face as she spoke. Anyone who wasn't blind could tell she wanted whatever conversation she was having to end.
He looked around for a moment, confirming that there wasn't anyone else in line for help. It was actually quite calm right now, maybe because it was the afternoon. Adventurers were in the climax of their exploration of the dungeon at the moment. It was probably a good idea to do this now and not later.
He nodded towards his three companions before walking forwards towards Eina, catching her attention as the man, who turned out to be an elf glared at him.
"What do you want?" He asked in a condescending rude tone. Bell just tilted his head to the side as he looked at him.
"I was going to ask if you were bothering her?" He honestly asked as the elf's eye twitched.
"Are you butting into my business. If you couldn't tell, me and Eina here were about to agree to a date" Bell almost snorted at the look on Eina's face as he said that. It was a clear 'Really? Weren't you listening' kind of face.
"Clearly not" was all Bell responded with as the elf almost growled like an animal.
"What the hell do you know!? Do you always act this arrogant? Maybe I should teach you some manners" The elf grinned at the last part as he put his hand on the hilt of his sword as Bell almost laughed. This man was a level 1. Even if he tried, he wouldn't be able to even scratch him.
"Wait! You can't win against him!" Eina frantically called out as her face had gone pale.
"Oh, my lovely Eina, I'll make quick work of this filth, then we can g-"
"Can you just shut up! The cheesiness of your words are hurting my head" Bell groaned as the man seemed to have enough and pulled the blade from the sheath and went in for a strike.
Bell simply grabbed his blade with his gloved hand and tilted his head.
"You do realize that I'm first class, right?" His face instantly went pale as Bell shook his head. He picked up on the snickers behind him, almost infecting him with them.
"Just go" He said as the elf scurried off, making Eina sigh.
"Thank you… he was… persistent" Eina looked beaten and irritated at the same time while Elora gave her a sympathetic look.
"I understand… Me and Bache here get a lot of gazes as well. Thankfully, Apollyon here seems to be a repelling force" The last part was clear teasing as Bell chuckled.
"Don't make me remind you of what happened back in Hylas village…" Bell snickered as Elora's face reddened.
"Oh? What did you do, Elora?" Bache teased as the elf went even redder.
"N-nothing!"
"Bullshit" Bell smiled at Bache beginning to interrogate her non-bloodrelated sister. He turned towards Eina after a second and smiled under the mask.
"We've actually come here to register our familia" He said evenly as the half-elf blinked.
"Eh? Register?" She asked as Bell nodded.
"Yes, we aren't really registered right now, so I'd like to get it done so we can enter the dungeon" Bell continued as it took Eina a moment to compute.
"R-right! One moment!" She awkwardly pulled out a piece of paper before walking around the counter.
"Let's sit down over there" She pointed towards an empty table where everyone could fit. They quickly sat down before Eina pushed the pen and paper towards Bell.
"Firstly, we will need you to write down the familia name and type" She instructed as Bell did so.
"Secondly, you should add the head god as well as the members and their levels" The three took their turns as they filled in all the information, starting with Bell in the 'Captain' position, Elora as Vice captain, Bache as Executive and their kids as members.
"Next, you just need to fill in residence as well as estimated funds" Bell quickly did so as he heard a snort from Bache as he glanced at her. She and Elora were clearly holding their laughter at that part.
"Lastly, we'll need the god's signature. Themis, if you would be so kind?" Eina asked as Erebus shrugged and filled in the signature.
"Alright, that should be it. Let me review it" Eina said, trying to prepare herself as her eyes began taking in the details of the document.

Eina dropped her pen as she finished, her eyes so wide one would think they were popping out of their sockets.
'EHH!? They are all third class or higher! And two level 7's to boot!? AND WHAT IS UP WITH THAT FINANCE!?' She internally screamed before she was snapped back from the snickers. She looked up, seeing Apollyon looking at her, his red eyes having clear mirth in them while the elf she figured was Elora and the one who was clearly Bache Kalif snickered at her.
"My apologies. I was just wondering if I was reading this correctly. Apollyon and Bache Kalif are level 7?" She asked as the two nodded.
"And Elora Carleen is level 6?" she continued as the elf smiled with her nodd.
"And you have 1.4 billion valis in finance?" The question made Bell chuckle as he opened his mouth.
"Well… it would be a lot higher if we hadn't built a durandal laced training area under our home" Eina's mouth dropped as she stared at him with fully disbelieving eyes.
"Gosh… why do I get the feeling that you're going to be full of surprises?" Eina asked as Bell chuckled as he remembered her asking a similar question at the beginning of his adventure in his younger days.
"I don't know, perhaps I will. Anyway, does that conclude our business?" Bell asked as his eye twitched.
'Why the hell is she still watching me!?' He was getting irritated with that damn goddess.
"O-of course" Eina shook as Bell realized that his skill was leaking. He quickly reigned it in before bowing.
"I apologize, I lost control for a second. It was not intentional" Elora and Bache looked at him for a second, as this hadn't happened in a very long time.
"It's quite alright. I'll get this document sorted with the others" Eina smiled before heading around the counter and disappearing around back.
"Alright, what's wrong?" Elora quickly pounced as Bell sighed.
"Just… the gaze of you know who won't go away. I could ignore it before when I wasn't as perceptive but now… it's honestly getting on my nerves. I'll probably head into the dungeon. If I go deep enough she won't be able to follow her gaze" Elora looked sceptical before Bache put her hand on her shoulder.
"Let him. It may have been a while but he knows what he's doing… and I know how frustrating it can be to be watched" Elora nodded as she knew what she was talking about. Bache hadn't really been free to do anything she really wanted to do under Kali. She always had eyes on her back.
"I'll be back by nightfall" Bell smiled as he walked off, Erebus nodding at him.
"You better…" he heard Erebus whisper before getting out on the street. As he walked, he tried to ignore the gaze as much as he could. Looking forward to whenever he could stop being on guard all the time.
It didn't take him long to get to the base of Babel, before quickly heading down, passing a few wary adventurers as he descended the stairs.
It had been a very long time since he had set foot on these very stairs leading towards a place that took lives every day. As the environment around him began to change, the atmosphere did the same. It became more and more eerie the closer he got.
'It only gets worse the deeper you go' Bell thought as his foot hit somewhat ragged rocks of the first floor ground.
If he remembered correctly, the fastest route towards the second floor was A-06. He quickly followed the path he had in his memory, his hand always at least an inch away from one of his swords.
'Strange, why are there no monsters?' Bell asked as his eyes darted to the side, only to see a goblin running away from him.
Huh? Why is it running away?
Bell blinked as he was slightly confused. Are they perhaps… scared of him? He slightly pouted at that thought. If they were afraid of him, what was he supposed to take out his frustration on? The dungeon walls? Not like that's going to do anything interesting, no matter how much he damaged it.
He sighed as he continued onwards, the stairs now in his sight. As he neared it, a figure walked out from the side pathway, blocking his path. Bell's eyes shot up at the man in front of him as he sighed.
"What is it, King?" Bell asked as Ottar stared down at him.
"I am here to issue a challenge" his words were hollow as Bell quirked an eyebrow.
"Are you challenging me? Why?" He asked as Ottar shook his head.
"Not me. Allen is" Bell blinked before chuckling escaped him.
"Huh? That cat did? What for?" He laughed out as Ottar glared down at him
"You put him underfoot. Even though I concede that he was in the wrong, he's still a member of my familia. If you do not accept his challenge, then I will challenge you" Bell instantly sighed out. He didn't exactly feel like fighting the only level 8 on the continent. Sure, it might get him to the next level if he wins but… from what he knows, Ottar isn't just his overwhelming power. He's actually an extremely capable and sturdy warrior with decades of built up experience to back him up.
Fighting him would almost guarantee his own defeat.
"Can I think about it?" Bell asked as Ottar nodded.
"That is of no issue. Milady expects an answer by midnight" The boaz said evenly before walking past him towards the surface.
'How the hell did he know I would be here?' Bell questioned the beastman, sweatdropping at his timing.
'Well, I still need to keep going' Bell thought before dashing forward, deciding to speed this up.
The environment blurring slightly from his speed, the occasional monster getting toppled over from the wind.
As the minutes passed and the floors went from one to the other, Bell relished in the feeling. He hadn't really been able to freely go as he pleased at full speed since he arrived in Orario.
There were too many people and his speed alone left footprints in the rock of the dungeon that healed within a few seconds of him making them.
On the surface, all he would accomplish is wreaking havoc on the city, breaking windows and sending everything to the side with the wind pressure and sonic booms.
Granted, he was still causing the sonic booms, but who was going to complain down here? The monsters?
Bell glanced around as he dashed another step, noticing the mist beginning to accumulate around him.
'Huh, I'm already down here… last time was when we killed the Demi-spirit' Bell thought as he flew passed the field that the battle had taken place on the 11th floor.
'Hm… what should I take my frustration out on? Maybe some minotaurs… no, I need something stronger. Oh, please tell me the goliath has spawned' Bell grinned at the thought. He needed an outlet, even though he had to go deeper after it in order to lose Freya's stare.
"KIIII!?" Bell blinked as his face was filled with white fur out of nowhere, breaking him out of his thoughts.
He tried to stop, but was a split second too late before he smacked face first into a wall, going through it before landing on the ground with his legs up against the wall.
It was almost comical how it looked as Bell slowly peeled the mysterious furball off his mask before glaring at it.
He had apparently run straight into an Almiraj… and it was still alive, though completely out of it.
Bell chuckled at the Irony of him of all people running straight into an Almiraj like that. He quickly flicked it to the side, hard enough for it to impact the wall and break its back, killing it instantaneously.
He dusted himself off before stretching. At least it had distracted him from Freya… and now he was thinking of it again. Damn it.
He shook his head and prepared to dash off again before a loud roar was heard… well, not that loud to Bell as it came down below, at least by a few floors.
Only one monster made that sound…
Bell grinned as he dashed off, heading straight for the origin of the sound.
It didn't take him long after reaching a little deeper into the middle floors as he used the holes in the floors naturally placed around to quickly traverse the environment, smacking a few Hellhounds and Lygerfangs like ants before moving on to the minotaurs, breaking their necks with punched and kicks.
As Bell got closer to his destination, he began hearing a bunch of voices mixed together in panic while one was trying to regain order.
"Oy! Get back in formation! Mage's, begin chanting. Half of you use healing spells, the rest use your strongest magic!" He somewhat recognized the voice of Bors, the 'unofficial' mayor of Rivira, mainly because he was the strongest there.
'Guess they are trying to take care of the Goliath to make travel safer…' Bell summarized before using scourge, speeding up considerably before heading straight down to the 17th floor.
The moment he landed, he almost sweatdropped at how chaotic the area looked. There were at least fifty adventurers here… how were they doing this badly?
Well… most of them were level 2 so that explains most of it. He kind of felt bad for Bord who was the only one at level 4.
The second Bell took to inspect everything was all the Goliath needed in order to detect his presence and somewhat turn to him.
'Perfect… I'm kind of wondering how strong I am' Bell grinned before pushing his scourge to the maximum, focusing everything onto the monster rex before slamming his foot against the ground, shooting off like a bullet.
'Huh… isn't that a little too fast?' Bell wondered as he threw his fist back before using all of his strength straight into the side of the monsters gut.
The flesh of the Goliath caved before it was ripped off in slow motion for Bell, before he shot past it, landing with his feet on the wall before pushing himself back toward the ground.
The moment his feet touched the floor-
*BOOM*
Bell flinched in surprise at the sound before he heard a lot of confused screams. He looked behind him before blinking in disbelief.
The entire right side of the monster's torso, its right arm and half the right leg were completely gone… as in nothing there.
The monster Rex seemed to want to scream, but didn't have any power in its body anymore as it fell to the ground, face first before exploding into a cloud of dust.
The entire area was gawking before one by one, everyone turned towards Bell who was still in disbelief.
'Isn't this a little too much?' He thought… what would happen if he stacked a fully charged Argonaut with that…? He honestly didn't even want to know.
It was at this point that he noticed the stares that clearly weren't Freya aimed towards him.
"Are you kidding me?"
"Who the hell is that guy? He has to be as strong as the king!"
"Yeah, that was unbelievable!" The whispers began to intensify as Bell sweatdropped. It was clear something was wrong when people were saying you are as strong as a level 8 when still at level 7…
Bell quickly turned around and disappeared from the adventurer's views before they had a chance to say another word.
'Why do I get the feeling that this is going to spread… and fast?' He sweatdropped as he stopped by a cliffside on the 18th floor before looking out across the beautiful scenery.
The forest was laid before him with ponds and a village in view. The massive tree added to the beauty that melted against one's eye.
Bell couldn't help but smile as he drank it all in, remembering a time he had seen a similar spectacle with Ais standing beside him.
His smile dropped slightly at the thought of the swordswoman. He honestly was at a loss for what was going on with her. He had thought she had hated him but every time he had run into her in the last 5 days, she had seemed… sad whenever he was mentioned.
Not sad as in the 'I'm still sad that he disappointed me', but the 'I regret everything' kind of sad.
The fact that he still had the tiny detail of her mother possibly being the great wind spirit, Aria wasn't helping his confusion at all.
He had had that specific piece of information for 11 years now and still hadn't wrapped his mind around that. How could she be her daughter if she hadn't been seen in over one thousand years? If she was her daughter, then doesn't that make Ais that age too? But then how the hell does a spirit have a daughter!?
Bell groaned as he gave up. Any scenario he comes up with only gives him more questions than answers.
Sometimes he really wished he could just… wind down without his mask on like he's used too.
Bell blinked as he realized something. He did have just that… here… in the dungeon.
His face snapped towards the center of the floor where the entrance to the 19th floor lies.
'The Xenos…' He slowly smiled as he realized how close he was to Wiene… oh, god, how had he forgotten about visiting Wiene!?
He quickly jumped down the cliff before running off towards the tree, reaching it in record time before descending down.
'I wonder how everyone is doing…' Bell could already picture it. Wiene laughing alongside Rei as they joked around like a mother and daughter would, Gros sitting in a corner with a humph while Lyd acted the part of Emissary and leader of the Xenos.
It didn't take him long to reach a familiar piece of crystal in a very familia pathway on the 21st floor. He grinned as he put his hand against it before pushing forward roughly, the crystal collapsing into tiny shards at the sudden rapid force.
'It's still here' He smiled as he noticed the lit torches to the side.
He began heading forward, excitement building up as he noticed that Freya's stare didn't reach this deep.
What did surprise him though was the massive influx of huts that came out of nowhere as the pathway expanded.
He could somewhat understand. They had probably expanded during the last 15 years. He could see some Xenos walking around, talking to each other as Bell smiled.
"INTRUDER!" Bell blinked at the scream before looking up, seeing red hair and bright red feathers flapping in the air, heading back towards the village.
"Fear…" Bell whispered out the name of the Xenos as he recognized her.
Bell stopped in his tracks as a multitude of monsters ran up to him with swords, spears, axes and other weapons aimed towards him.
Bell glanced around as he noticed a few familiar faces like Laura and Let. Apart from those two, there were surprisingly few that he actually knew.
"Excuse me, but could I speak to Lyd?" Bell asked as he noticed the surprised look in their faces of the ones he knew and glances from the others.
"Unfortunately, that is impossible" One of the Xenos responded as Bell blinked. Impossible? Why?
"I don't understand, where is Lyd?" He asked as he waited for an answer.
"Let me through!" Bell froze as his head snapped towards the voice. Where he expected a short dragongirl with adorable features to come out, a fully grown woman with two wings, beautiful waist length hair and sharp eyes stood, staring at him as she pressed herself past a Lygerfang Xenos.
Not only did she seem to grow physically, but her strength seemed to match too. 'Level 5 maybe 6?' Bell thought
"Who are you and what is your business with us?" Wiene asked as Bell let out a shaky laugh as he stared at the fully grown image of the girl he had rescued and taken care of… the girl he had honestly loved like a daughter.
"Wiene…" He whispered out her name as the Vouivre took a step back, blinking.
"How do you know my name?" She asked, concerned as Bell took a step forward, inciting a few Xenos to growl at him.
Bell's eye glanced down to his cheek, remembering the mask he had on as he quickly reached for it, grabbing it as the attention of every Xenos was on him.
A few gasps were heard as he took the mask off, his features revealed as his hair reverted back to a snow white color.
Wiene's eyes were wide, her body frozen at what she was seeing. It took a few seconds before it began shaking, her eyes watering as recognition was filled in her eyes. Her hand reached out softly as she slowly closed the gap between them until her fingers grazed his cheeks.
"Bell…?" She asked shakily as if he would disappear any second like a familiar hallucination.
Bell laughed out as he smiled, tears forming in his eyes as he nodded.
"Yeah… It's me" He smiled as the next second, she slammed her body against his, hugging him tightly as sobs escaped him.
"Bell… BELL!" She screamed out as she lost the strength in her legs, Bell getting down on one knee as he hugged her back, enjoying the moment as he ignored the confused glances from the other Xenos.
"Impossible… the boy was banished…" Laura breathed out Fear had landed and just gaped at the scene before her.
"Oh, Rei is going to freak out!" She laughed out after a second, wondering where the harpy was.
The scene went on for a few minutes, sobs from Wiene slowly decreasing in frequency before they turned to sniffles.
"Bell… how?" She asked as he looked at her with the smile she had missed for so long.
"I returned. Sorry it took so long" He responded as she nodded.
"We missed you, you know… all of us" Bell couldn't help but widen his smile at that before nodding.
"Missed you too… though I wish-"
"Bell…?" Bell looked up as he saw Rei, tears in her eyes as he already knew where this was going.
"Hey Rei… long time no see" was his words before he stood up alongside Wiene. He began walking towards her as she took a step back in disbelief.
"Hey… Rei… it's me" He said as she reached out for her.
"No… this… this is not real" The words confused him as he looked at her.
"Hey… Rei, look at me" He reached out, grabbing her shoulder before holding her in place, looking her in the eye as she had hers closed.
"Look at me" Her eyes opened, revealing a brilliant blue "It's me. I'm here" It took her all but a moment before her feathers enveloped his back before she hugged him.
"Hahaha… that's more like the Rei I know" Bell laughed as she did the same.
"Where have you been!?" She asked quickly, shoving him at arm's length before looking him in the eyes.
"Well… I've been a little here and there. Do you want every location or just the general idea of it all?" He asked as Rei seemed to think about it.
"All of it!" Wiene smiled as she poked herself between them.
"Right, right. Well, I've been to Telskyura southeast of here. There is the far east where a few really good friends are at the moment, Rakia where some allies are, Anfesera where I built myself a home, Agris, Zolingham, Beol Mountains, Seolo forest, Meilstora, Santorio Vega, Melen, Wishe Forest, Sharm, Preblica. Karu-"
"Woah, woah… I think you're losing everyone there" Fear joked as she walked up to them, Laura and Let beside her.
"That is correct, Bell-san! It's great to see you once again!" The goblin greeted with enthusiasm as he grinned.
"It's good to see you too, Let, Laura, Fear" Bell smiled "Though I'd say blame Wiene here. She wanted me to say every place I've been to" Bell teased as Wiene pouted.
"I didn't know it would be that many!" She complained as he laughed, patting her head which was still considerably shorter than he was.
"I understand, but there are still some places I haven't been like the Empire" He said as Wiene frowned.
"I don't like how they sound… from the information Fel's provide us from guild records, they sound like horrible people" She said as Bell blinked.
"Yes… speaking of the skeleton. Where is Lyd? He was always the one meeting him" Bell asked. The atmosphere instantly dipped between the Xenos around Bell.
"Lyd is…" Wiene got out before she snapped her head to the side, squeezing her eyes shut as if forcing back tears.
"Wiene?" Bell asked as he got a bad feeling.
The air in the area became heavy, Bell was strong but the looks on the Xenos, made him feel like everyone here was going to suffocate. Bell even began to feel like he would as well.
"Guys… where is Lyd?" Bell pressed.
"Lyd… Lyd died, Gros and a few others too. They were killed about 14 years ago, just shortly after you left" Rei spoke up.
Bell stumbled back and Fear and Laura reached out as if to catch him. Wiene even called out for him. The air began to become heavy again, but not from sorrow and sadness, it came from Bell, his scourge flowing from him. It did not take long for everyone to realize what was happening.
"Bell!" Rei and Wiene called out, this seemed to snap him out of it. Fear had gotten him a drink to try and help.
"Thank you…" He said broadly to everyone.
"Who?" Bell asked, a portion of malice oozing off his question.
"Pardon?" Rei asked.
Wiene realized what he was asking. Her eyes wide as saucers and red from tears. She remembered vividly who it was, the entire scene had transpired in front of her. Seeing Lyd die, her sorrow driving her to the brink of insanity.
Wiene's breath was starting to become ragged, and she was stuttering "Sorry" or "I'm sorry" over and over until she felt a hand placed on her shoulder.
It was Bell, whose' eyes were filled with an all too familiar sadness, but his face held firm… fatherly even.
"It's ok Wiene, I understand what you're feeling. When traveling, I met this young girl named Adrienne…" Bell began. His words telling the story of a young girl who gave him hope in some of his lowest times, joy in his saddest moments, and peace of mind as if his world was thrown to the wind to be torn asunder. He told them of their time together, most were intrigued by the story simply because it was the outside world. Though the smiles and laughter would soon come to an end.
"I held her in my arms after I had rescued her, and as her short life slipped from her" Bell's eyes pouring tears at this moment. "I could only remember what she said about people who pass on":
'People we love and care about may leave for long times, but they will always leave us a part of them behind, and it's our job to keep that part alive'
This seemed to be a revelation to most of the older Xenos, and even the more refrained members seemed to begin to cry at this, they've been doing this all their lives, but to hear someone reaffirm their beliefs meant the world to them.
"But, I still would like to know who did it" Bell inquired a second time.
Wiene, with renewed strength nodded "It-it was a person with animal ears and a spear, he wore all black, and his face seemed to be stuck in a scowl" Wiene barely finished when Bell sighed and stood up. He placed his hands on his hips as he looked up at the roof.
"Now I have a reason to fight him… I'm coming Allen" Fury strode through the air as he spoke, "Don't worry guys I know who did it, and it just so happens he really wants to fight me" Bell said now smiling, "And as much as I would like to take an eye for an eye, I can't kill him" the Xenos began to stir, some mad and the others unsure what an 'eye for an eye' meant.
"But I can do one better, imagine what would happen if I embarrassed him in front of everyone he wants to impress?" Bell asked but only Rei and Fear seemed to see where he was going.
"A fate worse than death?" Fear spoke out as Bell grinned maniacally.
"Exactly" He said
=Top of Babel Tower=
Freya was sitting at the top of Babel, watching the divine mirror in front of her with extreme patience. That man… Apollyon had surprised her again and again. Firstly, he not only strolls into Orario out of nowhere, creates havoc in the balance of power, stomps down on Allen then demolishes a Goliath.
'I want him' She thought as she smiled, still waiting for him to return up to the 18th, the mirror watching the entrance to the 19th. It was the deepest she could safely watch before… unwanted attention would fall on her. She didn't want to make 'Them' mad.
So she opted to wait and reign in her curiosity. There was one thing to ponder about while she waited… and that was about the man's soul. It was… bizarre to say the least. While others had varying colors and contrasts depicting their personalities and natures, his was just… blank, distorted in a way. It showed no color… but every single one all at once.
It was an impossibility, within a possibility. Something that contradicted a fundamental part of reality as she knew it. It was strange, and it was infuringly tickling her curiosity.
What was this man like? What made him tick? What were his likes and dislikes? Things normal women would wonder that she never got to feel as her innate ability to see into the soul gave every question away at a glance.
For example, she often asked about a person's name like she had the sword princess' once, but nothing else. She already knew she had a dark past. She already knew she was practically obsessed with Jagumarukun. Her soul said it all, but to have one she can't read was an experience she had never had before.
It was almost like her Bell-kun all over again, but laced by another layer of mystery.
She snapped herself out of her thoughts as the man appeared, walking calmly up the floor. She quickly began following him with the mirror with great interest.
It didn't take long for things to get interesting as he stopped all of a sudden and looked over his shoulder… straight at the mirror with his red eyes.
"Freya… I accept the challenge" Was all he said before turning back and began walking, the divine mirror not following as Freya was too stumped to even do so.
He knew? Oh this made things so much more interesting. It's just like Bell-kun! Oh, things couldn't be more perfect… wait… he accepted? As in the challenge?
She turned to her side where Ottar stood as if to confirm her suspicion. He merely nodded, understanding her silent question making her grin.
"Oh… this is going to get very interesting" Was all she said as she took a sip with a wide grin, excitement filling her entire being upon what would soon go down.
That's chapter 36! I hope you all enjoyed it. Now, we did get some bitter reviews (who we won't mention) that either complained without reading the story or just negatively tried to push lore onto the story. I believe we have said this before, but this is a fanfiction. We get to change things here and there in order to build our own story. Just because something is the Lore in the official Danmachi universe, doesn't mean it is in this story. So please, refrain from saying that something doesn't work like that since chances are, we are already aware and just decided to change it.
Now, we only have one review to answer here with some added information under it as well since we get so many questions. Firstly, we are going to give the status of all the 'Main Characters' as in the ones that are the most important right now alongside other information that might be important. As for Alias', if anyone remains the same it's because the god's didn't bother to change them.
