AN: Hey guys.
This fic will be low priority until i finish The Rebirth of the Dragons. After that, it will probaly become my main fic.
This will be a Magitech fic. I will try to do the impossible and explain magic with science; which probably means it will end up filled with inconsistencies, but i will try to keep the amount low.
This fic is inspired by the amazing: Back to the Beginning and its sequel Origins. By Burnable.
English is my second language so expect some errors.
Hope you guys enjoy this one.
Chapter 1
Troubles with Dementors and escaped convicts aside, the new school year started pretty well for Harry.
In his first lesson, the new defence professor Remus Lupin showed himself to be a vast improvement on the last two. Not that the bar was set that high, one was possessed by Voldemort, the other was a fraud that tried to wipe his memories.
Professor McGonagall said in her first class that this year they would finally start learning more intricate transfigurations. Something Harry was looking forward to.
Not even Wood waking him up at 4:30 in the morning on the second day of the school year for Quidditch practice was enough to dampen his good mood.
He was currently walking to charms class with Ron and Hermione. That was another class he was looking forward to; Professor Flitwick always made classes fun, and charms was his second best subject, behind defence, so he had high hopes for this year.
"What do you think Professor Flitwick will teach us this year?" Harry asked.
"This year will be a lot of charms that can be used in combat as well as an introduction to charms that are used in enchanting" Hermione responded. "Spells like the freezing spell, the full body-bind curse, the general counter-spell, the banishing charm and the unbreakable charm." She said in a voice that Harry was pretty sure meant she was quoting a book verbatim.
"I already know most of those." Harry complained.
"Even if you know then, it is always useful to revise and let the professors show you any mistakes you are making in casting." Hermione responded.
"Or, if you already know the spells, you could always use the class to take nap." Ron said, and immediately took a slap to the back of the head.
"You shouldn't sleep in class Ron. And if you do, i won't help you with essays." Hermione said.
They reached the door to the class and Harry and Hermione walked in, Ron coming behind them mumbling about annoying bookworms. Harry and Hermione looked at each other and shared a smile about their friend's antics.
They seated at a table in the middle of the class, a compromise between Ron who wanted to seat at the back of the class, and Hermione who wanted to seat at the front. This year they were sharing Charms class with the Hufflepuffs and they were approached by Megan Jones.
"Can i seat with you three today?" Megan asked.
"Sure" Hermione responded.
Megan sat on the chair to the left of Ron, Hermione was seated on his right and Harry sat to the right of Hermione. Harry tried to be polite to Megan by asking her about her summer; little did he know he was about to almost start a fight.
"It was great; my big sis Gwen took me to see a few of the Harpies training sessions, and i went to all of their games this summer. It was really fun." Megan said.
Ron turned to look at Megan so fast he almost hurt his neck.
"Gwen, Harpies. Gwenog Jones, captain of the Harpies is your sister?" Ron asked with a look of awe in his face.
"Yes. My big sis is pretty amazing, isn't she?" Megan responded.
Harry was pretty sure Ron's jaw would be hurting later because of how open his mouth was.
"Yeah, she is really good. You think she could play for the Cannons?" Ron asked with a hopeful voice.
"She is a league winning captain for the Harpies and she likes winning, why would she play for the cannons." Megan responded, so much confusion in her voice that Harry almost laughed.
Ron stood up from his seat and looked ready to start a rant when Professor Flitwick walked into the classroom.
"Settle down students. Mister Weasley, Miss Jones, you two can talk about Quidditch after the class." The professor said and then with a smirk he continued. "Besides, everyone knows the Tornados are going to win the league this year."
There was a lot of laughter in the classroom and quite a few students voicing their agreements, while others started talking in support of their own teams. Harry did not participated in the discussion, he didn't know much about the quidditch league; it wasn't like he could follow it while he was trapped with the Dursleys for the summer.
"Settle down, students." professor Flitwick said; once the noise died down he continued. "Now, this year you will be learning a lot of charms that you will certainly use, no matter your career in the future; enchanters will use the unbreakable charm, duellist, aurors and many other careers that deal with combat will use the full body-bind curse; and everyone will use the general counter-spell."
Harry looked to his side and saw Hermione already taking notes, despite fact that there was no real information given by the professor. Harry thought she was looking a bit different than usual; her hair was a little more untamed and he saw a hint of dark circles under her eyes. He had tried to talk her out of taking every single class, but Hermione wouldn't hear him; he would need to find a way to talk to her again and try to convince her to drop a few classes, if she was already looking that tired before the second week of school started, he didn't want to see what she would look like by the end of the year.
"Next lesson we will start on the freezing spell; but today we will have a revision of the spells you learned last year." He heard professor Flitwick say.
He turned his attention back towards the professor and focused on the class; even if it was just a revision, professor Flitwick still made the class fun; he focused on teaching them different ways of using the spells they learned last year or even first year; Harry particularly enjoyed the different ways he learned to use the slowing charm and the levitation charm. Professor Flitwick showed them how to use the levitation charm on specific parts of something or someone; it caused a funny moment when Harry used the levitation charm and then the slowing charm on Hermione's hair, causing it to rise and then start falling in slow motion.
At the end of the lesson the professor let them go without issuing an essay, something that was celebrated by all bar Hermione, leaving the class they all started walking towards the great hall for lunch, the hufflepuffs and gryffindors walking together; Ron and Megan still arguing about quidditch. Harry shook his head at his friend's obsession with the Cannons and then started a conversation with Hermione about the freezing spell; Harry knew he didn't add much to the conversation, he wasn't as smart as Hermione, even if he was smarter than his grades showed, after all, he didn't try too hard to get good grades. But he still enjoyed hearing her talk; she always explained difficult concepts in a way he could easily understand, and he liked how passionate she was about it, how her eyes sparkled every time she was talking about something they learned on their classes, or something they would still learn in the future.
They walked inside the great hall, still deep in conversation; by that point the topic had changed and they were talking about their next class, they had also been joined by Neville, Hannah and Susan. The gryffindor and hufflepuff tables were side by side with each other, so they were able to continue their conversation; they talked about what they expected from the next class; Harry and Hermione would have divination class, while Neville, Susan, Hannah and somehow also Hermione, would have muggle studies class. Hermione said it would be fascinating to learn how witches and wizards viewed muggles; Harry still didn't think that was a good enough reason to take the class, but he wasn't going to start that argument again. Neville and the hufflepuffs also didn't knew what to expect from the class, but they were looking forward to it. Harry also had no idea about what was going to happen in divination class; he knew they were going to use crystal balls sometime this year, but that was just because he heard Parvati and Lavender talking about it in the common room.
They keep talking while they ate, the conversation jumping topics all the time, until they got dragged into Ron's and Megan's conversation about quidditch, apparently both Susan and Megan wanted to play for their house team, but they didn't managed to get selected to it. They asked Harry if he had any tips that could help them with their flying, but Harry couldn't help them, flying was something he liked doing, but he really didn't knew any specific techniques, he usually just let his instincts guide him when he was flying.
By the end of lunchtime Harry knew a lot more about the three hufflepuff girls; he also realized that it probably was the most time he had ever spent talking with someone that was not from gryffindor; he found out that he enjoyed it; he had started to think that he was limiting himself a lot by just staying around Hermione or Ron, no one would replace his best friends, but he thought that maybe he could make a few more friends this year.
Harry sat in a comfortable chair near the fireplace in the gryffindor common room, trying to write his potions essay in a way that wouldn't have Snape giving him a D grade again; he was pretty sure his essays were being unfairly graded, but complaining about it wouldn't change anything, the older years had said so; Angelina said she had complained about it to professor McGonagall many times, but it didn't change anything.
He heard someone seat on the chair to his right and looked towards it, seeing Hermione with an annoyed look on her face.
"What's with the face?" He asked.
"The muggle studies class is completely useless; the professor hardly knows what a car is and i'm pretty sure when she says car she is talking about those old things from the 1910s, the only thing she knows about the Second World War is that Grindelwald was active in Germany at the same time; she also doesn't know anything about the moon landings. The only good information in that class was the bit about how electricity only has a problem with active magic, and even that wasn't something she knew herself, apparently it was your mother that told her and professor Flitwick." Hermione said, huffing at the end.
"My mother?" Harry asked, that was something he had never heard about her and he wanted to know more.
"Yes, apparently your mother was trying to combine magic and technology; professor Flitwick might know more about it, professor Burbage said that your mother was professor Flitwick's favourite student." Hermione said; she seemed a little happier for some reason.
"Maybe i will ask him if he could tell me more about her. As for the muggle studies class, from what you told me i still think it is better than divination." Harry said, smiling a little.
Hermione huffed again and started ranting about the two classes, while she picked up her notes and started writing her own essays; Harry still wanted to know how Hermione could know what was happening in both classes, she was in divination class with him, so she couldn't have been in muggle studies; maybe she had some type of magical recording device that recorded the muggle studies class and then she watched it latter; she did disappeared after the class was over.
Once Hermione's rant died down, they started a more easy going conversation while they worked on their essays; they tried to get Ron involved in it, but he preferred to continued to play chess. While they talked and did their essays, Harry started to think about what Hermione had said; he always heard people talk about how smart his mother was, trying to combine magic and technology was something only a genius would be able to do; he felt a little ashamed, his mother probably wouldn't be proud of him for not trying to hard in his exams; he thought that maybe he should start trying again, the Dursleys wouldn't lock him into his cupboard again if he showed up with good grades in his report card like they did the first time; they wanted nothing to do with magic.
Harry decided right at that moment that he would start to put in effort in his studies again; he wanted to make his mother proud of him, the first thing he would do was drop divinations; he had enough people trying to kill him, he didn't need someone also predicting his death. He asked Hermione about her other classes and thought that ancient runes sounded fun, maybe he ask professor McGonagall if he could still enter that class.
While he helped Hermione with her Defence essay, the only class he was actually better than her; they started talking about what his mother might have been trying to do with her research, combining magic with technology sounded difficult but also amazing; they talked about how his mother might have been trying to make television and other muggle appliances work around magic, it sounded plausible based on the fact that his mother was muggle born; they also talked about more crazy ideas like trying to make cars run on magic, or trying to use magic as electricity, or even if it was possible to create a magical spaceship. A few hours later, after talking about magic and technology in equal amounts; they finished their essays, and Harry started to remember how he liked to do this kind of things when he was younger, before he realized that the Dursleys wouldn't treat him better if he did well in school.
They stayed talking for another hour, being joined by Lee Jordan; the friend of the twins was a half-blood and apparently a huge fan of comic books, neither Harry nor Hermione knew much about comic books, but Lee explained some of the concepts to them, that resulted in them talking about if it was possible for magic to create things like iron man's suit or if alchemy could be used to create kryptonite, they moved from comic books to movies and started talking about lightsabers or maybe replicators.
By the time he went to sleep, Harry's head was filled with ideas; he would talk with professor Flitwick when he had the chance and would ask him if his mother really had been working with magic and technology, and if she was, maybe he could try to do something like that as well, it would be nice to do something his mother wanted to do but didn't had the chance.
Charms class had just ended and Harry decided to stay behind to ask professor Flitwick about his mother; he had tried to talk to the diminutive charms master a few times during the weekend, but never had the chance.
"Professor, can i ask you a question?" Harry asked, approaching the professor after everyone but Hermione had left the classroom.
"Sure, Mr. Potter, do you have any doubts about the freezing spell?" Professor Flitwick responded.
"No Sir, i wanted to ask about my mother. I heard you knew her well, can you tell me a little about her?" Harry asked; he saw a look of pity cross the professor's face, he didn't like that, he never liked when anyone gave him that look; he was proud of the fact that his parents loved him enough to give their lives for him.
The professor agreed and then started to tell Harry stories about his mother, in the few minutes they talked Harry learned a lot about his mother; he learned that she was a brilliant student who also had a bit of a temper, something surprising to him was the fact that his mother was friends with Snape, they apparently grew up together and stayed friends in Hogwarts even with Snape in slytherin and his mother in gryffindor; apparently their friendship ended in their fifth year, when Snape called his mother a mudblood.
He also learned that his mother had a bit of a temper and didn't liked his father at first, until his sixth year his father was a bit of a prankster, and his pranks might have crossed the line into bullying a few times, so his mother, always willing to speak her mind, constanly fought with his father. He didn't like hearing that his father was a bully, but he still enjoyed learning more about them.
A few minutes later; Harry had to leave for his next class, the professor offered to talk to him again later and Harry accepted his offer, but before leaving he made one last question to the professor.
"Professor, i heard my mother was working on combining magic and muggle technology. Do you know anything about it?" Harry asked.
"Yes, Mr. Potter; i remember your mother was quite passionate about her research; may i ask where did you hear it?" Professor Flitwick responded.
"Hermione told me that Professor Burbage said something about my mother's research in her muggle studies class." Harry responded.
"I believe it was that fascinating lecture Lilly gave when she was pursuing a charms mastery; Charity was there that day." Professor Flitwick said, mostly to himself.
"Yes Mr. Potter; i know about your mother's research, in fact, i want you to have this." The professor said.
He opened a drawer in his desk and pulled something that looked like a journal, he proceeded to give it to Harry.
"Your mother gave this to me a few days before your parents went into hiding, it is one of her first work journals, filled with her experiments. I didn't managed to learn much from it, i believe it is because of a lack of muggle knowledge, but maybe you will have better luck Mr. Potter." Professor Flitwick said.
Harry looked at the journal now in his hands; that was only the second thing he ever held that belonged to his parents; before this, the only thing he owned that once belonged to his parents was his invisibility cloak; he felt his eyes starting to water.
"I... Thank you, professor." Harry said, trying to stop himself from crying.
"There is no need to thank me Mr. Potter; i am just passing a gift your mother once gave me. Now, i believe you have another class soon." Professor Flitwick said, smiling at him.
"Yes, professor; i have. Thank you, again." Harry said, shaking himself of his emotional state.
He walked out of the room, the journal held close to his chest; and saw that Hermione was outside of the door, waiting for him.
"How did it go?" She asked.
"It was great; he told me a lot about my mother and even a few things about my father." Harry responded.
"He also gave me this." Harry said, showing Hermione the journal.
"What is it?" She asked.
"It is one of my mother's work journals, apparently it has details about a few of her experiments." Harry responded, and immediately saw the hungry look on Hermione's eyes.
"Yes, Hermione; i will let you read it later." He responded before she even asked. "But now we have to go to defence class." He said.
Hermione jumped in shock and started running, realizing that they might end up late for class; Harry chuckled and ran after her.
"Your mother was a genius, Harry." Hermione said.
He and Hermione started reading his mother's journal together as soon as they were free of classes for the day. At first the journal was quite plain, his mother wrote about a few scientific laws and principles; Harry only knew a few of them, but Hermione knew them all and explained to him the ones he had trouble with. From there, his mother wrote about a few minor experiments; first she tried a few things to understand how magic interacted with various muggle objects technology, which was when she made her first discovery; magic only interfered with electricity, non electrical objects like, fire extinguishers, old style engines and even guns worked perfectly around magic.
Both Harry and Hermione almost kicked themselves for not realizing this before; the Hogwarts express was a steam train; basic thermodynamic cycles, while capable of generating electricity, didn't need any to work.
A few pages after her experiments with mechanical objects, his mother started to write about her experiments with limited electrical currents; she discovered that she could use magic on objects that had limited electrical current usage, she wrote about her experiments on a car, how the spells worked but the car started showing weird behaviour, almost like it was starting to gain consciousness or something similar. When they read this passage they both started to laugh, thinking of a Ford Anglia that now lived in the forbidden forest.
After that, came the section on more complex electronics; his mother had made a few experiments on televisions and washing machines and quickly discovered that transfiguration broke any electronics it was used on, another of her experiments caused a large explosion when she tried to use a colour changing charm on a washing machine that was still in use; she didn't had any more luck with using a sonorous charm on a television either, it broke down immediately and when she opened the TV, it was beyond repair. The first success she had was using the reparo charm on a broken and unplugged TV, the charm worked perfectly and when she turned the TV on it also worked. So she started to use charms on unplugged objects, at first she didn't to know why some charms worked and others not, but then she started to connect the dots and realized that the charms that were working were charms that had a immediate effect, instead of a prolonged effect.
That was about when the journal started to come to an end; his mother didn't wrote much more on it, only her musings about why some spells worked on complex electronics and others didn't, she theorized that magic might work somewhere in the electromagnetic spectrum, it would solve the problem of not all magic working on electronics if magic was like an EMP; the last thing she wrote on the journal was how she got access to a computer and would try to use magic on it.
"Do you think we could find the next journal?" Hermione asked.
"I don't think so; Professor Flitwick, told me she gave him this journal only a few days before they went into hiding, maybe her next journal was in the house and got destroyed." Harry responded.
"Have you ever been there, in the place they died?" Hermione asked in a low voice, almost like she didn't want to do it.
"No, never; i never visited their graves either." Harry responded also in a low voice; he never thought about it, but he really should visit his parents' graves, at least to say thanks for their sacrifice.
"Harry, i think we should try to continue this, it seems like your mother put a lot of time in her research; we should try to continue it, to honour her." Hermione said smiling at him.
"You're right, Hermione; we should. But we will need to know a lot more about science; it seems my mother used a lot of scientific principles in her research." Harry responded also smiling; he liked Hermione's idea, it was a nice way to honour his mother, and her research sounded fascinating.
"I will ask my parents to send a few books; mostly on engineering since it seems like that is what we will use the most." Hermione said, writing down on a piece of parchment what she would ask from her parents.
"We will also need to find a place we can use; i can ask my parents for one or two portable radios, but if we turn them on here in Hogwarts they will immediately fry." Hermione said.
"I will try to find a place we can use; maybe i will ask the twins, they seem to know everything about the castle." Harry said in a pensive tone; he could probably get the twins to tell him something, maybe some secret passage that lead to outside the castle; they had to know one, with the amount of things they always had that could only be bought outside of the castle.
Harry and Hermione spent hours talking; their homework completely forgotten as they planned what to do with the information on his mother's journal. Hermione had to explain a lot of things to Harry; there were a lot of things he didn't understand in his mother's research, he had some basic knowledge from his science classes before Hogwarts, but that wasn't nearly enough to understand most of the concepts his mother wrote about in her journal. He could understand EMPs easily enough; even if he thought he only understood the basics of it, but some kind of energy pulse that destroyed electronics wasn't that difficult to understand, it was somewhat intuitive after all.
From there, Hermione started to explain to him what little she knew about how to deal with EMPs; she did knew that silver one of the best metals to insulate against electromagnetic interference, so maybe it could be used to negate an EMP.
While talking about magic interference; Harry had an idea and when he told it to Hermione she thought it was a good one. His idea was that maybe magic itself could be used to negate magic, some kind of enchanted object that sucked out all the ambient magic of a place; Hermione thought it could be done since a lot of enchantments and runic arrays already powered themselves using ambient magic, they would just need to create some kind of overcharged enchantment or runic array; difficult, but certainly not impossible.
Harry was now glad that he was able to talk to professor McGonagall and change his classes; he had dropped out of divination and started ancient runes, it was already paying off before he even had attended his first class; it seemed they would be using runes a lot in the future.
Hermione also had an idea; trying to get in contact with the people behind the wizard wireless, it seemed to be just an adaptation of a radio, it didn't work in the same way, but it used a lot of the same concepts. If they could learn more about how it operated, it would be a major help in their research.
They were so distracted by the conversation that they only realized how late it was when Percy Weasley told them it was already curfew time; they knew somewhere in their minds that it was getting late when Ron stopped trying to distract them. It was quite funny when earlier in the evening Ron tried follow their conversation, but ended up completely lost trying to understand what they were talking about.
Harry said goodbye to Hermione and climbed the stairs that led to his dorm room; his mind flying between many ideas while doing so. Once inside the dorm room and seeing that most of his dorm mates were already sleeping; Harry took a quick shower and prepared himself to sleep. Lying on his bed he felt something he hadn't felt for a long time, not since the Dursleys had punished him because he got better grades than Dudley; the desire to learn more, the desire to improve himself. Maybe this time, without the Dursleys around; he would be able to keep that desire going.
AN2: I will be triyng to explain more about the fic in various AN.
This will be a long fic, possible without an end. I will be setting it up in a way that will allow me to do many crossovers within the same universe.
It will also be a harem fic, but Hermione will be the driving force behind it; she will be a bit of a perv in this fic.
While the fic itself might possible be without an end, every arch will have an end. The first being the Harry Potter arch, the first crossover will be Elder Scrolls.
I will tell you guys more in the next Chapter's AN.
See you guys in the next one.
