The Box

It was a nice sunny day in the city of Torence, Missouri. Birds were singing and bees were buzzing around as they searched for nectar and pollen to bring back to their hives.

Towards the outskirts of the town sat a 7-story tall red brick apartment complex. A large sign out front had the words "Sunrise Apartments" on it in bright orange lettering on a white background. On the third floor, in apartment 18, an 18-year-old boy could be seen working on a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Said boy had lightly tanned skin, bright blue eyes, blondish brown hair, and, when standing, was 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was wearing white socks, grey shorts, red sneakers with the logo PUMA on the side, a green shirt with a light green turtle on it, and a leather necklace with a fox and cat made of some sort of purple stone or gem as the centerpiece.

This boy was named Gavin Woodring.

"Annnnnd there! It's now complete," Gavin said happily as he put the last piece of the puzzle in place. The puzzle was of a jungle, with multiple jungle animals scattered around it. "Can't wait to post a picture of this to PuzzleLoversForLife." Said website was for puzzle enthusiasts and allowed said enthusiasts to post pictures of their completed puzzles.

As he pulled out his phone to take a photo of the puzzle, there was a knock on the door. "Oh, I wonder who that could be?" he said as he got up and walked over to the door. He opened the door, and saw that a mailman was standing there.

"Hi, I have a package for you," The man said, holding out a box the size of two basketballs.

"Alright," Gavin replied, taking the package from the man and found it to be rather heavy. 'This is a pretty big and heavy box.' "Do I need to sign anything?"

"No, you don't," The man said, already walking away. "Have a good day."

"You too!" Gavin called out as the man started heading down the stairs. He then shut the door with one hand and locked it, before heading back into his living room, which was painted light green and had a large couch, coffee table, TV, a small entertainment center, and brown carpet on the floor.

"I hope it's my new puzzle I ordered," He said as he set the box down and looked at the addresses on the top. Unfortunately, the box appeared to have been through some pretty rough stuff, as the sender's address was missing, having been torn off by something, and the recipient's address was extremely smudged, probably due to some liquid of some sort dripping on it. All he could see were the letter's a, I, and o. "I really do."

He then began to carefully tack off the paper, starting at the seams. Within a couple of minutes, he'd taken all the paper off, revealing a cardboard box with black duct tape sealing it up. He then grabbed a pair of scissors that were nearby and cut through the duct tape, before slowly opening the box, revealing that the inside was filled with packing peanuts. 'That's a bit odd,' He thought upon seeing the packing peanuts. 'I've never gotten a puzzle packaged with packing peanuts before.' He then slowly tipped the surprisingly heavy box on its side, causing the peanuts to start spilling out onto the coffee table and puzzle.

After several seconds had passed, there was a loud thunk! as the objects inside the box fell out onto the table, and Gavin's eyes went wide. 'That is NOT a puzzle!' He screamed in his mind as he stared at the objects.

The first object was a large skull the size of a big pumpkin that looked somewhat like that of a canine's. The skull had four horns on the top and sides of its head, and four eye sockets. The horns were black in color, ridged like goat horns, and curled around twice before ending in sharp points that aimed towards the rear of the skull in an upward sloping direction, while the teeth were all extremely sharp like shark's teeth, with four large fangs in the jaws, two of which were golden.

The second object, which landed on top of the skull and got hooked on one of its horns, was a gold necklace with a round pendant as the centerpiece. The pendant was gold in color, and was shaped like a pentagram, with a large red gem in the center of it.

Overall, it was a bit disturbing.

"Okay, what in the hell?!" Gavin said after a few seconds of stunned silence, setting the box down on the floor. "This isn't the puzzle I ordered."

He then sighed. "Dangit, he gave me the wrong package," He said as he shook his head. "Well, I better put these things back in the box and call the delivery service to let them know." He then reached out and grabbed the necklace to take it off the horn.

As soon as he touched the necklace, it began glowing a bright red. "What the..?" He trailed off as the light started getting brighter and brighter, causing him to let go of the necklace. "Why is it doing that?" Red tendrils of energy then began to emanate from the pendant, causing him to jump up and step back in surprise. "Okay, what's going on here?" He said as the tendrils began covering everything around them.

Suddenly, he heard a song start to play around him.

Livin' easy

Lovin' free

Season ticket on a one way ride

"What in the world?" He said, confused about the situation. 'Where's that music coming from? And why is this happening?'

Askin' nothin'

Leave me be

Takin' everything in my stride

Don't need reason

Don't need rhyme

Ain't nothin' I'd rather do

By this point, the tendrils had completely covered his kitchen, laundry room, and bedroom. Everything was becoming covered in red.

Goin' down

Party time

My friends are gonna be there too, yeah

I'm on the highway to hell

On the highway to hell

Highway to hell

I'm on the highway to hell

Upon hearing that, Gavin's eyes widened. "Aw helllll no!" He said as he got up and started running to the door. Well, more like stumbled, due to him covering his eyes from the bright red light. Unfortunately, when he reached the door, he found that it was locked tight, surprising him. "What the fuck?! Unlock dammit!" He growled as he tried to turn the lock, but it refused to budge.

No stop signs

Speed limit

Nobody's gonna slow me down

Like a wheel

Gonna spin it

Nobody's gonna mess me around

Hey Satan

Payin' my dues

Playin' in a rocking band

"Come on, please!" He begged as he pushed against the door, kicking it as he tried to get out. Unfortunately, the tendrils were lessening the strength of his blows, and had completely covered almost all of the apartment.

Hey momma

Look at me

I'm on my way to the Promised Land, ow

I'm on the highway to hell

Highway to hell

I'm on the highway to hell

Highway to hell

Mmm, don't stop me

Ehh, ehh, oww

"Help me!" Gavin screamed as he threw himself against the door, trying to break it down. The tendrils then covered the last bit of surface area in the apartment, minus Gavin, and were starting to glow bright

I'm on the highway to hell

On the highway to hell

I'm on the highway to hell

On the highway to...

Hell

Highway to hell (I'm on the highway to hell)

Highway to hell (Highway to hell)

Highway to hell (I'm on the highway to hell)

Highway to hell

And I'm goin' down

All the way, wow

On the highway to hell

"Help!" He cried once more as the tendrils were now glowing like coals in a roaring fire. And then with a bright flash, Gavin, the skull, the pendant, and everything else inside apartment 18 disappeared, leaving no trace someone had even been living in the apartment.

Well, this was an interesting beginning to a story!

Can't wait to write more!
