Chapter 1
Zootopias Finest
Clear sunny skies was forecasted for the residents of Zootopia that Saturday afternoon. Mammals were leaving work hoping to beat the traffic. After all; depending on the time of day a simple 15 minute drive could turn into a 40 if you weren't careful. As the 4:00 rush began, a lone gerbil was scurrying back to his job after taking an extended lunch break. As he began sprinting he approached an intersection where a black and white police cruiser was parked off to the side. Out in the middle of the road guiding traffic was a small grey bunny in her standard police uniform. She had one paw in the air in a 'stop' position while the other was gesturing for the other cars to proceed.
As the gerbil approached the intersection he frantically glanced at his watch. 15 minutes late. His boss wouldn't care about the excuse of the line he had to wait for his lunch or traffic being backed up. Every second he was late would only further his chances of being replaced. The gerbil stood at the side of the street impatiently waiting for the cars to stop so he could cross. After tapping his foot for 30 seconds he turned his attention from the traffic to the bunny.
"Hey officer!" he shouted in his tiny voice. "I'm kinda in a hurry could you possibly hold this side for just a sec?!"
Unfortunately for the gerbil Judy had her headphones in on full blast. Traffic duty was unbearable for her enough as it was. The pop star Gazelle was her remedy to help make time go by faster. While this may have benefited the bunny, this only caused the gerbil to become frustrated.
"HELLO?! I SAID I NEED TO GET ACROSS!" he yelled now waving his paws in the air. Judy had finally caught sight of the frantic mammal in the corner of her eye causing her to jump slightly.
"Oh!" she reacted pulling the earbuds out. "Sorry! Sorry about that here hold on!" she said nervously signaling to halt the oncoming traffic. Her muzzle turned a bright pink from embarrassment. The gerbil shook his head and stomped across the street giving her a dirty glare.
"Bunny cop, you would think with those ears she could hear anything" he mumbled to himself as he reached the sidewalk.
Judys ears dropped hearing the comment the tiny mammal made and decided to put her earbuds away for the rest of the shift. "Get it together Judy only a little bit longer" she told herself. She couldn't help but feel a bit agitated being stuck directing traffic despite it almost being a full year in the force. Awhile ago she was recognized as not only the first bunny cop; but also one who solved a mystery case that the rest of her Precinct couldn't. Going from that back to directing traffic just didn't settle well.
Suddenly a voice projected from the parked police cruiser behind her.
"Oh officer Hopps, you in need of a break?" quipped the voice. Judy ignored the voice pretending she didn't hear. "Hope that poor gerbil wasn't late to wherever he was headed."
"Not listening to you" she muttered looking every direction but the cruiser. She was beginning to lose focus of which cars to stop and which to let through. Another screech came from the cruiser.
"Hopps, our shift has been over for 10 minutes now" announced the voice. Judy while feeling a sudden relieve that the day was nearly done still ignored him. One final screech came from the speaker of the large vehicle. "Fine, if you insist fluff".
The cruiser began to move forward towards the intersection where she was standing. Judys eyes widened as she finally noticed the large vehicle approaching while other traffic was still passing through. 'What is he doing?' she thought as she halted traffic from all sides. The cruiser pulled up beside her with the driver window slowly coming down. Inside revealed a red fox with aviator shades on with a mischievous grin.
"Our chariot awaits madam, hop in. Buffalo butt said 4:00. It's 4:13" Nick spoke pulling his shades down slightly.
"I'd rather walk" Judy hissed back at him turning her head to hide the small smile slightly forming on her face.
"Now you're just being dramatic" Nick mocking replied. A loud honk interrupted their talk.
"CAN YOU DO YOUR JOB I"M GONNA BE LATE FOR MY APPOINTMENT!" screamed a furious armadillo. This caused a chain reaction of more honks. Judys face had now turned beat red; not only from the slight annoyance of the second mammal that day now questioning her capability of doing her job; but also at the large grin felt coming from her partner.
"Clearly these mammals have somewhere to be. As do we." Nick quipped smugly. "Let's go our punishment is done here."
While Judy didn't want to give in to the foxs' request, she had enough of today. If one more mammal yelled at her she was going to lose it. She let out a brief sigh walking over to the passenger door hopping in. The ride back to Precinct 1 was in pure silence - at least until Nick decided he couldn't take it anymore.
"Well that was interesting huh?" he spoke up sarcastically.
"Mh Hm" Judy nodded looking out of the window. "Can't wait to do it again tomorrow and the next day...and the next day...and the ne-." Nick glanced over at his partner before letting out a defeated sigh.
"Alright fine, you win. I was wrong" Nick spoke focusing his sights on the road. That was music to her ears although she wasn't about to let it go that easily. After letting the silence settle in for another minute she responded.
"Try not to mouth off to Bogo anymore Nick, I'd rather not have to spend the rest of my week writing tickets and directing traffic." she spoke.
"Ahh he just needs a sense of humor that's all" Nick implied before noticing the death glare she gave him. "But ok...I got it. Just still getting used to this whole taking orders thing that's all. Living freelance for my whole life I'm not used to having a boss down my back."
"I know, just try a little harder to hold your tongue with him. He is our boss, and if one of us gets in trouble we both pay" she replied slightly softening her stern tone.
The two mammals pulled up to the station to finish the report on their day. A quite uneventful day after all. Clawhauser greeted them with a wave upon entering the main entrance. Nick spoke up before Judy could say anything.
"Say Claw, Chief still in today?"
"Yeah, he's up in his office right now. How did traffic duty go?"
"I need to talk to him...apologize for this morning" Nick said ignoring the rhetorical question. He glanced down at Judy for a brief moment. She looked back at him with a look of reassurance. Despite his attitude with Bogo he had come a long way in the few months of them being official partners.
"What? Need me to hold you paw slick?" Judy quipped punching him in the shoulder. "Go ahead up, I"m going to get the report done so I can finally go home."
"Yeah yeah" Nick replied approaching the stairs. Walking up he could hear Clawhauser and Judy making small talk. The last he could make out was one of them saying something along the lines of "hope chief has cooled down".
Nick knocked on the door and heard a deep burly voice respond instantly.
"Yes..?" the voice responded.
"Uh..chief it's Wilde, just wanted a word with you for a minute."
Nick waited what felt like an eternity for a reply before he heard "come in." As the door slowly opened there was the chief sitting in his chair with his hooves crossed. Strangely enough he had a grin on his face. The fox jumped into the seat from across his desk.
"How was traffic duty?" Bogo snarled even though he already knew the answer. Not a single officer liked traffic duty especially on an 90 degree day.
"Fabulous" Nick replied sarcastically trying to hold his tongue as his partner had urged him to. "Look I won't take up much of your time, I just came to apologize for my...antics in the bull pen earlier." The chief snickered at this. Perhaps he didn't feel the apology was genuine?
"Trying to make me look like a fool in front of my officers isn't something I take lightly Wilde" Bogo spoke. As if that wasn't obvious to Nick by now. "I accept your apology however."
Nick was quiet for a moment. Almost in shock at how easy it was. Too easy to be exact...
"Welp chief, I best be going to do that report now and te-"
"Not so fast, I have something to discuss. A bigger matter at hand" Bogo spoke abruptly. Nick knew he wasn't off the hook that easily. "You and Hopps despite being the smallest mammals on the force, have produced results that I can't ignore. There is a new case I will be speaking to you both about tomorrow morning. You're both relieved from traffic duty for the rest of the week." Bogo took a slight pause glancing at the paper in front of him. "This case has gone cold several times."
Nick looked up slightly intrigued but also nervous. "Several times eh?" he commented trying to sound unphased.
"Yes, i"m not sure if I should be assigning this but it's an opportunity that I am unsure will arise again anytime soon. This is far different from the Bellewether case; this mammal has been able to remain free as a fugitive for over 10 years. Perhaps having a cunning fox and overly driven bunny could be just what this case needs."
Nick smirked at the compliment. "You expecting us to bring him in in 48 hours boss?"
"How about 24?" Bogo answered with a chuckle. Nick looked back not knowing whether to laugh or be on guard. "No in all seriousness I don't expect you both to catch him that soon or at all even."
"Some faith you have in us chief" Nick replied folding his arms. "Looks like Judy and I will just have to-"
"Prove me wrong" Bogo spoke up. "I hope you do. Now get out and enjoy the rest of your day. I will see you two tomorrow bright and early."
Nick got up and walked towards the door. He turned back. "Hey chief"
Bogo rolled his eyes. Of course this fox couldn't let the conversation go without making a snide remark. "Yes Wilde"
"Good talk"
Nick then turned exiting the office.
Bogo shook his head turning his attention to the file on his desk. The name on the file read:
Donte Wilde
