The weekend at the cabin for Jonathan and Jennifer was much needed and the two found themselves feeling refreshed and closer, as if that was even more possible for the Harts.
They spent time wrapped in each other's embrace, and savoring the passionate love making that ensued. Jonathan counted the weekend as a success as did his wife.
After breakfast, they decide to head home. It would be dinner time by the time they got home so Jonathan got them on the road.
The sky was still dark, as if the sky could let loose at any moment. The rain had been off and on during their quick weekend getaway, but it didn't make it any less enjoyable for the two.
They still found ways to occupy their time, even with the weather as awful as it was. They found plenty to do indoors.
They begin their journey and the roads are fairly clear so Jonathan easily zips right along.
" When I go back to the office tomorrow, I will see what I can find out about that Senator for you." Jonathan says before looking at his wife, " In the meantime, I don't want you or Carolyn muddying the waters."
Jennifer nods. " I don't think bringing his name up to the faculty or staff would be a great idea. Word travels fast."
" You don't have his son in your class do you?" Jonathan asks.
Jennifer shakes her head. " No. I don't"
" That's probably for the best." Jonathan replies, with his wife readily agreeing.
He wants to know more about what this man has up his sleeve and found it a bit ironic that he has a tie not only to the school his wife was now a faculty member at but potentially involved in a major scandal she was also reporting on and it didn't sit well with him.
…
After several hours in the car, the pair make it almost home before the sky begins to open up. The sky has gone from swirls of blue to dark and angry and the rain came down with a vengeance.
They take the road passing by the school and Jennifer sees a familiar figure standing near the bus stop, trying to find shelter from the rain.
" Darling, pull over. That's one of my students!" Jennifer exclaims.
Jonathan slows and pulls up to the curb.
Jennifer gets out of the car, the rain coming down harder now.
" Macy! Get in, we can give you a ride!" Jennifer motions to the car, trying to usher her over.
" No thanks Mrs. Hart!" She tries her best to duck back under the tree she was standing under, clutching her library books under her shirt so as to not ruin them.
" Please?" Jennifer begs as she pulls her jacket closer to her body.
Sighing and not seeing an easy way out, she takes her up on the offered ride.
Jennifer smiles lightly as she opens the back door to their car. Jennifer quickly gets in the front.
" Macy, this is my husband, Jonathan." Jennifer quickly gives them an introduction as she tries to find something for Macy to dry off with, not caring about herself at the moment.
Seeing nothing, Jonathan removes his jacket and turns to the backseat, offering his coat.
" Thank you." she says quietly, not quite making eye contact with Jonathan.
" It's a pleasure to meet you." Jonathan offers up his hand. Macy hesitantly takes it and shakes it, finally catching his gaze and seeing his friend and warm face smiling at her.
She offers up a small smile back at him.
Freeway Junior also jumps into the backseat off Jennifer's lap, sniffing out the newest occupant in the vehicle.
Macy is very leery of the dog until he gives her a lick on the back of the hand, causing her to giggle.
" That's Freeway." Jennifer grins, motioning to the pup.
" What an interesting name." Macy speaks softly as Freeway moves to sit in her lap now, eager for a rub behind the ears.
" Tell me where we can take you." Jonathan says, looking at her through his rearview mirror.
" Um…I live down by the old Bank that closed on 3rd Avenue." Macy was fidgeting with her fingers as she gave Jonathan vague directions.
Without questioning her he smiles and nods before pulling back onto the road, driving in the direction that Macy gave him.
" How has your weekend been?" Jennifer asks, turning to the brunette.
" Fine." she replies, as she pets Freeway. He's enjoying this new little companion and content being in her lap.
" Did you get some books at the library?" Jennifer pokes again, wanting to know more about this very guarded teenager.
Macy nods. She shows Jennifer the two books she had taken out.
Little Women and Pride and Prejudice were the well loved books she had in her grip.
" Excellent choices." Jennifer says with a smile.
The girl only nods, remaining rather quiet and stoic.
Jonathan could tell his wife was trying to break through to the girl but she remained stone faced and he couldn't read her.
The ride is quiet after Jennifer decides not to press her with any more questions, wanting to keep a great rapport with the girl so she studies the road ahead.
Before they knew it, the ride was nearly over as Jonathan was nearing the bank. Macy's eyes were darting between the buildings, trying to pick a place to walk into so they didn't see where she was really going.
" It's the blue building, there." Macy points to a small apartment building just a few stops ahead.
The rain was slowing down considerably and by the time Jonathan stops and puts his car in park next to the sidewalk, the rain was now at a more tolerable drizzle where the few steps up to the building wouldn't soak the child.
Just as Jonathan exits the car to go around and open Macy's door, Macy gets out, handing Jennifer the jacket as she's trying to also get out.
" Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Hart. See you Freeway." Macy quickly walks away, turning her back towards the older couple, before the two could get a word in or to even tell her a proper goodbye.
Freeway barks, wanting attention now that the warm lap he was in,was gone.
" Goodbye!" Jennifer calls to the young girl.
Macy doesn't turn around. She makes her way right up to the building and cuts behind some trees, hoping that she doesn't get in trouble for being on a property she didn't live at, and she wants to be out of sight from the Harts.
Jennifer takes in her surroundings as she gets back into the car.
It didn't seem like an awful neighborhood. She wonders what the girl's foster parents are like and what they do for a living.
Jonathan rubs his hand on the back of his neck, surveying around the area they were at and rather hastily joins his wife in the car.
" I don't think she was being truthful with us." Jonathan says as he looks his wife in the eyes.
Jennifer raises a brow. " You know darling, I had the same thought. I wonder why she doesn't want us to know where she lives?"
She bites her lip gently as she tries to piece together this situation in her mind, trying to make sense of it all.
" I don't know." Jonathan decides to pull his car forward, making them out of Macy's line of sight so they could get an idea of where she was going.
Jonathan spots her weaving in and out of the few people on the sidewalk heading East.
He follows her, keeping his distance as he does so.
He and Jennifer are both surprised when they see her running up the steps of St. Anne's Home for Girls.
Both Jonathan and Jennifer look at each other in surprise.
Jennifer grabs onto her husband's arm knowing that he has a tender heart when it comes to orphanages. After all, that's where little Jonathan Hart got his start in life.
He swallows when he thinks of the memories and Max coming to his rescue.
He squeezes Jennifer's hands and pulls it up to his lips, pressing a soft kiss into her knuckles, appreciating her just being there, beside him when he sometimes needs the encouragement the most.
" Well…at least we know she's safe." Jennifer tries to clear the silence once they take off back towards their home.
" At the very least." Jonathan replies, keeping his focus on the road.
