"Chapter 10 - I'm Sorry"
Fire. Buildings Collapsing. My life is at stake. Everything is going down in Berlin. The allies have finally reached the capital, storming with all they have. Painting the German town red and burning the swastika of the Nazis. All this done in vengeance of what we had done to all those who rebelled against the Führer. And now, I too see their fury clearly. I feel what they feel. The hatred. The anger. The revenge for their fallen comrades. Every time I think about what my stupid brainwash has caused me…It rots me to my core. Now I really messed up. For my friends and my life. I am truly sorry.

"RUN! EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELF!", rants out a German officer, commanding every person escaping through the tunnel system. In between this multitude, you could find almost every single type of person in here. Men, women, children, soldiers, officers, husbands, elders, leaders, and Dustin himself. All these people were scared. Scared of losing their lives to the invaders. Scared of capture and being treated the same way they did to the Jews. But for Dustin, he was scared because he was afraid of reliving a nightmare once more. Relive another broken life with no meaning and complete despair. So in the end, here he was, running for his life and his head filled with thoughts of capture and torture. Hoping he would make it out. But just as families push one another to get to their salvation, an explosion is heard behind everyone. Then, flashes of bullets and lights begin blowing from the cloud of dust, hitting whoever was unlucky. As Dustin looks behind him to see the sight, he notices allied soldiers poking out of the cloud and hide quickly behind cover, all whilst taking fire at the crowd and Nazi soldiers. Waking Dustin immediately, a soldier slightly pushes him with a rifle, ordering him to participate in defending. But Dustin, with his spirit more broken than ever, just stares at the rifle hyperventilating, while the soldier keeps ordering him some more. Dustin decides to shake his head and continue running with the crowd, where the soldier calls him out by shouting "coward!", only to get shot in the head from allied soldiers. With all this commotion, every single person was running for their life. Many began toppling those who fell and pushed over those who weren't capable of continuing. The tunnels were filled with screams and cries of horror, the sound of pain could be heard on the other side of it. And as everyone ran, they got nearer to the light that was seen from afar. Everyone began running even harder, pushing whatever was in their way. Dustin saw this horror unravel, and had the feeling of guilt. Wishing he had never got into this kind of conflict. And as surviving Germans got close to the end of the tunnel, the allies got even closer to the fleeing group, shooting as many as they could. Luckily, Dustin and a few others got out of the tunnel to where they all went in different directions. For many, they went aboard a plane or grabbed one of the many cars sorted in the parking lot. Dustin, seeing the few options there was, grabbed a truck and began starting the car, to which it didn't comply at first. He kept on going and going until it turned on, so then he-"Wait, Don't GO!" As Dustin turns his head to view the rampage behind him, three German soldiers begin to hop on the truck and rapid shots begin to hit the back windshield of the truck, nearly hitting Dustin from the back. One of the soldiers starts slamming the side of the truck, giving Dustin the sign to go NOW! Dustin switches the gear shift from parked to drive and fiercely accelerates all the power the truck has and avoids any more incoming shots. And from this point, Dustin didn't know what he was doing at that point. Now instead of him running away, it is four of them running from whatever is going to hit them. With this, Dustin said only one thing to himself…"To Hell And Back".

"A Surrender?! So much for the great "Fatherland" of Deustchland," exclaims Karl, the egoistic, rather gentle Cocker Spaniel, towards another one of the soldiers scavenging through the woods.
"If I would've known this was the result, I wouldn't have signed up to begin with. Dumb Hitler and his false 'promises'," answers Hans, a creative but exploding Maltese dog, "What do you say about this, Dustin?"
But when questioned, Dustin ignored. He currently was in his abyss of thought, not having a clue what was going around him. He didn't give mind to question, conversation, nor action. "Dustin…DUSTIN!," the Maltese canine barked out louder, only to get interrupted by a worthy and calm German Spitz dog.
"Hans, leave the man alone. He's been through a lot," Walmund, the good dog, orders Hans briefly, signaling him to fetch more wood or find some valuables anywhere.
"Ja, whatever. Come on Karl, let us go find more wood," Hans replied as he emphasized the word "wood", proceeding to then leave the area. On the other hand, after the two soldiers left, Walmund turned to see Dustin and went on to walk over. As he got closer to him, he noticed that Dustin was observing a little object he held in his hand. His medal from WW2. He gazed at it with disgust, giving so much attention towards it, that he didn't even realize Walmund was behind him. That's when he snaps out of trance to hear someone near him question, "Is everything alright?"
Dustin looks up surprised and agitated, continuing to say the next thing, "Oh, hey Walmund, yes…everything is fine."
With such a shallow response, Walmund raised an eyebrow and felt the uncertainty of Dustin. "I know you are not being honest with me. You can tell me if something bothers your mind," he then whispers, "I will keep it a secret."
Dustin, feeling the trust of Walmund, speaks softly and looks back down, "Did you ever do something, I don't know, way back in the past that…you may regret doing?"
Walmund gets confused by such a response, then slightly chuckles and comments, "Many times in my life. I broke so many of my Father's paintings, broke up with the only love I had in my life, and…killed my brother who protested against the Nazi regime."
Dustin's ears perked up to such an answer, accompanied with a face of guilt and shock as he stared at Walmund, to which he then said, "I-I'm sorry. I…ugh didn't know. I didn't mean to-"
Walmund brushes it off with his hand, "Ahh, it doesn't matter. I would get my fair share of spanks, scolds, and even slaps on the back for being an asshole." They both laughed softly at such a vulgar comment, to which Walmund continued, "Yeah, but you see, to forget all that happened to me, you know what I did?" Dustin shakes his head, and Walmund proceeded, "Well, to forget my past, I look towards the future and my present. I think about the things that I will experience, and I laugh knowing that I will be alive at that time. I think about my friends of the now and about my "true" family that cares about me, and gives me everything I need. Like attention, sympathy, and love."
In return, Dustin only stared at Walmund, wondering what he just told him. He felt like all this time, he never gave a real chance to listen to other people. Finally, Walmund said one more thing, "Dustin, if you ever feel broken or depressed, try to remember these words: Yesterday is now forgotten, and tomorrow is unknown. But what truly matters is that we live the present, for it is a gift. Live the present, for it is a gift. Never forget that."
To this, Dustin nodded his head, and Walmund returned it. Then, their silence was broken by the shouts of a familiar voice.
"Walmund! Dustin! We brought more sticks!" Screamed out the annoying Karl, carrying a bunch of logs and sticks to start a fire. Following along, came Hans with even more sticks and a few leaves to spark something. Dustin and Walmund got up and went to help with starting the fire, as nightfall began painting the sky.
I repeated these words nowadays. Never forgetting what Walmund told me back then. And sadly, I needed these words more than ever in this new world I live in. All the new things I've seen. Now, I truly thank Walmund for what he did. I thank all of them for trying their best. But alas, even the best of relationships, have their downfalls.

The bitter cold is driving the dogs mad. The noises of rustling leaves have the men 24 hours always watching. And as they scavenge through the woods, they look for any sort of valuable resource, mainly food and water. They check every bottom of rock, hole in tree, leaf in bush, they look everywhere. Just as the men look in every nook and cranny, two voices begin barking at each other, throwing words at each other. This catches Dustin and Walmund's attention, to which they come to inspect the show going on. After a brief moment of running, they find Karl and Hans verbally fighting each other and roaring hate at each other.
Hans shouted at Karl, "Oh is that so, well then why join the Reich, IN THE FIRST PLACE?!"
Karl contradicted, "It was to make my Mother proud and hide from capture, YOU EMOTIONLESS BIT-"
"HEY, CUT IT OUT!" Walmund came barking, asking the following, "Why are you all screaming about?"
Hans answered quickly, "This bastard here. Is. A. JEW!" Once said, everyone looked in his direction, confused by the revelation they have now learned. They all were surprised by this new knowledge, unsure of how to react to such a surprise. That is when Karl snaps, filling his face with anger, frustration, and…tears?
"Ja, I joined the Reich being the Jew I am. So what? I can't make my family proud by turning into a soldier, no matter what the country is? I can't fulfill my promise of being a good son for my Mutter? Can't I get a break from all these wars in life?"
As Karl begins to break down crying and crouches into a ball on the floor, Hans begins to feel guilt for what he said against him. While Walmund only watches what's happening, Dustin gets closer to say a few words to Karl.
"You really meant your promise, huh? Well, I never had much of good parents, but yet I still…miss them. I always wished I had someone to look over me. Someone who would do anything for me, and I would return the favor. And you see, I got so many people in my life that did anything for me, no matter if they knew me or not. So in return, I promised them to do the same with others I'd meet later in life."
After the emotional talk of Dustin, Karl looks up with red eyes, staring deeply into Dustin's eyes. Karl feels enlightened, responding with a smile and one nod. But before Karl could say thanks, two bullets are heard from a distance, to where an impact hits a tree, while the other hits Hans. Right through the stomach. Hans drops down in pain, screaming hard and bleeding a big amount of blood. The other three look up to see their attacker, which to their surprise are two dogs with bolt-action rifles, both taking turns in firing their shots. Seeing this, Dustin grabs Hans and lifts him over the back, signaling the others to start running as fast as they can. This ensues a chase for the Polish hunters, to which they go along and start running as well. At first, the three dogs were fast and volatile in escaping, but the problem was-
"AUGH! IT HURTS!" The screaming of Hans kept alerting the hunters and led them to their location. So no matter where they went, Hans' screaming would just grab attention. It continued to go on like this with the hunters being so close to the stowaways. One yard away from the other. That was until Hans stopped yelling. Not a single word came out of him, and weirdly enough, not even a single breath escaped. Luckily during this moment of silence, Dustin found a cave, big enough for the three but not too noticeable to the hunters. As the three hide in it, the hunters take the bait and give chase in another direction. Once gone, the men release their breaths and finally get some rest. On the other hand, Dustin begins to laugh, getting the feeling of ecstasy.
He then says, "Woah, that was one good run, was it not Hans?"
But sadly, he didn't get a response, which grabbed the attention of Karl and Walmund. Dustin gets closer to inspect the body, only to find one conclusion. No breathing, no blood spoiling, and not a single movement. He is dead. The three survivors begin to let out tears, knowing they have just lost a good comrade of theirs. Exploding in temper, but a good heart. And now, he is gone. Once the men let out their tears, Dustin got up and brushed himself off, to where he then whispered to himself, "The show must go on." He shook his head to the left, letting the other two know that it was time to leave. Karl and Walmund left the cave pretty soon, but Dustin took one more moment to view the corpse of Hans. But that is when he noticed a shiny object in Hans' pocket. He goes over to inspect the item and finds a surprise. It was a dog tag from WW1. A bit blurred and rusty, but could make out one word, or rather name.
"Dus-tin," read the curious dog, slowly then surprised at the name. His own name. Imprinted on the silver, brown-covered tag with rust and dirt covering it. As he holds it firmly in his hand, he turns to Hans and smiles. Internally thanking him for keeping such an object. Afterwards, he tucks the tag away and leaves the establishment.
As I saw the tag he had saved, I once again remembered the quote of my generals. To honor a fallen comrade, survive and live. I would never forget this, not even in times of near-death. And I did exactly that…The day everything changed. New life, here I come!

"Now guys, do you remember the plan?" Questions Dustin, pointing at the farm across them. Karl and Walmund nod and scream out in unison, "Yes, sir."
Dustin concludes, "Well then, let us execute." The three began to crouch silently towards the farm, avoiding any type of noise possible. Although Walmund and Karl were pretty sure of this decision, Dustin had once again the bad feeling of something happening. But for once, he uses conscience and thinks about not himself…but his friends. He knows that they must seek food from this farm because they are in desperate need of food. So as they carried on with the plan, they got closer and closer to their objective, and were ready to carry on the second phase: Find Food. They opened the door lock with a swiss knife, and carefully peaked through the door crack. Resulting clear, the three canines move in and quietly look around the farm for either food or visible threats. Dustin orders the two to split up and look in different directions, to which they obey. As Dustin, Karl, and Walmund seek every perspective of the farm, they find no sign of threats and a plentiful supply of eggs, livestock, and chopped wood. Gathering as much as they can, Dustin grabs many eggs and tries his best not to drop any. Unfortunately, he stops and turns his head slowly to find the door open and a familiar man standing right in front of it. The same man who killed Hans with his rifle. The two stare at each other, unaware of what to do next. That was until the Polish dog quickly brought his eyes to one of the haystacks. On top of it, the rifle itself. Dustin sees it and rapidly gets up to run at the rifle, causing the man to do the same thing. Luckily, Dustin grabs it first and swishes the firearm right into the face of man, causing him to fall. Then punches him again with it to knock him out immediately. Standing upright and breathing heavily, his thoughts become blurry and doesn't know what to do next. Then, he hears another voice scream out. Triggered, he runs outside with the rifle and leaves the dog unconscious on the floor. Karl, on the other hand, was having complete trouble. He was encountered by the other man and ensued a brawl against him. The two fought back to back, both taking the opportunity to punch the other. Walmund then barges in through the door and tries to grab the attacking man from the back. Sadly, the man was strong and didn't get off easily. But once he was pushed back, the angered canine swiftly pulled out a revolver and aimed it at Walmund. The man fired, and missed Walmund, as the clever dog jumped out of the way to avoid the bullet. Yet there was…impact? As the three men in the room look at the noise of impact, they see none other than Dustin. He was standing with his rifle in his hands and now, a bullet wound spilling blood from his heart. Literally through the heart. As he begins to shake his hands and feel lightheaded, he looks up one more time and admires his friends. Knowing this will be the last time he sees them. Finally, he drops down to the ground and shoots the rifle, hitting the angry man in the head. An instant kill. He also heard one shout. A shout from Walmund. That was…of his name.

Dustin lies down once again. Knowing he will repeat another life once more. Then he wakes up, quickly sitting upright on the bench he was on. He felt his breath heavy, his head numb, and his purpose still meaningless. He looked at his hands, remembering all the countless lives lost from his cause. All the countless families left with either no father, no mother, no child, nothing. He looked out to see a sunset gazing right back at him. A sunset colored honey and gold, with bright orange surrounding it. He looked deeply, and made a psychotic face. The face of a man who had enough. A man who would repeat his nightmare one mor-
"NO! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! I have HAD it with these shenanigans! I'm tired, I'm beaten, I am LOST! Please, no more! I don't want to lose anymore people! PLEASE!"
Dustin pleaded at the sky, ripping pieces of hair from his head and screaming out at the top of his lungs. He truly meant what he said. From the top of a single hair of his head, to the bottom of the tired toe of his foot. He truly was tired. But what can he do? The Spirit won't forgive him, no matter what he said or did to justify his actions. So all he could do now…was sit on the bench and sob. Sob for the friends he has lost. Sob for the lives he had killed. Sob for what he said in the past. Nothing he could do now would fix what he did back then. He sat all by himself on the bench, with his face dug deep into the palms of his hands. He wanted peace and quiet for once, until…
"Are you okay, sir?" A quiet voice spoke to him. Gentle and kind. Dustin responded crying, "No…I am not fine. I have lost everything. My friends, my family, my own life. I have no purpose."
The small voice continued, "Oh, I see. I'm very sorry that happened. You must feel-"
"Broken. I feel broken and miserable," Dustin interrupts. But the voice said something else.
"I was going to say, alone." This sparks Dustin's curiosity, and looks up to see who it is. It was nothing more than a little pup girl. Colored light blue, blue and dark blue. Not very tall, but not very short. Looked not older than 8 years old. This surprises Dustin, wearing a face of confusion filled with tears. The girl then adds on, "Y'know, I found this medal this morning. I asked my mother what it was, and she told me that it is a badge given to those who are brave, strong, and honest. Like…warriors. But then she told me that it was also given to regular people. People who suffer through many things like losing their families or losing their friends. People who get up in the morning and push on with their lives, no matter what hits them."
The girl then handed Dustin the medal and put it in his hand, lightly closing it and tapping his fingers. "I wanna give it to you. I can see that you got hurt so many times by…well, whoever it may be." Dustin felt a feeling like nothing before. The true feeling of glee, joy, and happiness. The true emotion of happiness. He then responded back, "Thank you." The little girl only smiled back at Dustin, wagging her tail in joy and ears all perked up. Then another voice is heard from afar, "Bluey! Time to go!"
"Oh, that's my Mum. Bye mister!" The girl said as she went running back and waving at Dustin. Now gone, Dustin was left alone. Not just him, but a small gift from a little girl of a big heart. Dustin only looked, and realized what Death had meant the whole time. It doesn't matter if you go through the worse in life, or go through the worse in battle. But what matters is that you carry out the rest of the plan as always. That you carry on your life just the way you want to. Do everything your way, and never forget to wear a smile across your face. As Dustin thinks about this, he stares off into the distance. Viewing the great sunset that painted the sky. Then, a voice is heard right next to Dustin. A familiar voice.
"Are you now satisfied with your life?"
Dustin keeps on gazing with a smile, and finally answers…
"Yes, I am satisfied with my life."
